MARES OF THRACE

MARES OF THRACE
A New Adventure… In All Her Glory New interview dedicated to our section The Woman Rocks in Conexión Rock Radio Previously we offered interesting reports with girls who are standing out in the scene as in the case of Maldita and GGGOLDDD. On the map appears a duo of talented musicians who return through the front door and who break a silence of absence, ready to reclaim the place that by law and right corresponds to them. Mares Of Thrace arrive from Canada, and this time we talk with Thérèse Lanz, Guitar and Vocals of the band who shares impressions about their new release, the third in their career called The Exile, which came out on March 25 via Sonic Unyon Records and marks a triumphant 10-year comeback after 2012's release of The Pilgrimage. This new page in their history complements the lineup Casey Rogers on Drums and Bass, and according to our guest, this new album is a safe bet that will put them back on the map, and that in the midst of a global crisis that the world is beginning to recover they will seek to play in as many places as possible to conquer new audiences. Sit back, grab a coffee, drinks or snacks, and enjoy this read dedicated to a mighty Canadian sonic assault, and jump right into a new adventure that Mares Of Thrace offers everyone and marching like soldiers into a war for return victorious… In All Her Glory. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras to Canada Thérèse, for us it is an honor to talk with you and share in this report the news that Mares Of Thrace will offer to its fans around the world in this 2022, welcome!
Thérèse Lanz: Hi Johonny, good afternoon from Calgary, Alberta and thanks for coming to us, here ready for your questions and a joy to talk to someone there in Central America. CR: On the contrary, thanks to you for granting part of your agenda in this conversation, and how things have been in recent weeks back home, have you been able to present yourself despite the restrictions? TL: During the last few months we couldn't play live or practice due to distance issues, since me and the drummer live in different cities, but the good thing about all this is that the places are starting to open up again now, we are working on organizing the tours and it will be a matter of time to return to the stage again. CR: Let's talk about The Exile, the band's new album, the third in discography (we also mention the single Dead French Mathematicians that was released in 2014) which was released last March 25 via Sonic Unyon, congratulations by the way, this album promises to be one of the releases in 2022, how have you felt with the reception that everyone has given to The Exile?
TL: First of all, thanks for appreciating our album Johnny, we are glad to know that you liked it. Regarding the reactions of the people, everyone has been really very excited and grateful and the truth has surprised us a lot after presenting something new after 10 years, we thought it would be a half reaction, but the reception to the new album was very strong, we are happy and excited about it to the point that we get excited by the comments of people on the verge of tears (laughs) CR: Now that you mention it Thérèse, curiously, The Exile comes to break a silence of 10 years since The Pilgrimage, many wonder what happened to the band during this long time of absence?
TL: One of the main reasons was for my work, moving from city to city without having a fixed address was not really fun, and that generated a long pause since 2010, already with a stable place where I lived without problems I decided to make material new, and everything was ready to be processed in 2020, but when the pandemic happened the best thing was to wait for the right moment to launch something new, and that wait took us 2 more years. CR: For The Exile there are new changes, Casey Rogers is the new drummer, and he also plays bass. On the one hand, how have you felt with the contributions that Casey has given in the study, and on the other hand we want to know if they had collaborations this time?
TL: I consider that the changes are favorable, I previously worked with Stef, for work reasons she could not continue in the project anymore. Currently she is a nurse and has been working very hard since the pandemic started, for that reason Casey is the new drummer in the band and a friend of many years (interestingly both she and Casey played in another band called Exit Strategy) By the way, he has been in charge of the production and mixing of the album and has contributed very good things, since it was a joint effort, in addition the project was financed by FACTOR, the Government of Canada and the private radio stations of Canada , and that was very helpful for us. Regarding collaborations, we have the participation of Amanda Bourdon on vocals for the Offerings Of Hand And Tongue track, and we wanted to show the world that this was all an effort of two people looking to demonstrate something new. CR: As you mentioned before, you had everything ready in 2020, but the pandemic put a stop to everything. Was it easy or difficult for you and Casey to record the new album with the limitations that the world lived at that time? TL: The truth was very easy since we take care of the whole process from our recording studios in our homes, so taking advantage of the lockdown time was very productive and stress-free. CR: Here we come across strong points like Onward Ever Onward, Mortal Quarry, or The Thread That Will Unravel You, we know that fans who have been following you for many years will enjoy a good repertoire, but new fans will look at you as a interesting proposal. What impressions do you have on having new fans in the Mares Of Thrace camp?
TL: We are very excited to play again for the people who have followed us on the road for years, but as you say for those who will meet us at our concerts, it will be an experience where we will offer interesting things, and that will be where we will see their reactions. CR: In addition to the music, which is the point we are talking about, another thing that will attract attention is the cover, perhaps people will think that it is something related to Homer's The Odyssey, or is there something different that Mares Of Thrace offers us with The Exile ? TL: There is a bit of concept in this work, it talks about how one is forced to leave their home and wander forever, and living that experience is an exile. It reflects a lot of what I experienced before moving from one place to another reflecting various stories and current events in the lyrics, and listening to the album in its entirety gives you the feeling that you are living a journey through the songs. CR: For those who know the band for the first time as a curiosity, does the name refer to something historical or mythological?
TL: Actually, yes. The name refers to the Mares of Thrace or the Mares of Diomedes in Greek mythology, which are four mares that breathe fire and eat human flesh, and that was fascinating to me, and I decided to call the band that. CR: With The Exile it is the second release you do with Sonic Unyon Records
How have you felt that a label like this gives you a lot of national and international support? TL: We love the label (laughs), they are very good friends and we have good relationships with their PR and distribution staff. We always look forward to our projects, and he's also given a lot of support to various Canadian artists over the last few years, and that's been a very positive point in the scene. Also, it is the place where we work with other bands that are very good friends of ours like Voivod and Danko Jones, in short, we are proud to be part of Sonic Unyon, and especially with this new album. CR: Three albums, an adventure that you started in 2009 with several changes that contributed a lot to the history of Mares Of Thrace in which you were a witness through the years. What is your point of view of how they have evolved musically to this day? TL: It has been a point that I have been mentally focused for all these years, the last album for me is the best personally speaking, although I could be a little biased about how it sounds, I consider it to be more melodic and with less evil load than in our previous releases, but that doesn't detract from the fact that it is already part of the history we are writing and that we seek to do more things in the coming years, either with more albums and many tours. CR: If you were told that The Exile is the album that defines a before and after in the band's career, what would you think of that? TL: I don't know if you could tell us that this is our most mature work (laughs) I wouldn't want to fit into that image, nor would it be an experimental release. We just decided to follow our instinct as artists and make a different sound and direction in the proposal that we are presenting. CR: Despite the fact that the pandemic has subsided over time and despite the fact that there are variants that can be controlled, what do you think about this whole situation that people have experienced in these two years, especially with the fear of going to a concert and get sick again?
TL: I have a lot of things and very strong opinions about it. But I want to be very clear in expressing my good wishes to the people who have managed to put up with this problem all this time, the people who have lost jobs, especially in the entertainment industry, we all suffer equally, especially those who have lost loved ones. Everyone must know that pandemics will not last forever, and that we must return to things in a normal way. This has taught us to take everything with more caution, to the rhythm of time and circumstances. Let's just hope that the worst is over and be prepared when something similar happens in the future. The experience lived in these two years will give us the guideline to face future threats like this one. CR: That's right, people are gradually regaining confidence in moving forward despite the restrictions in several countries, some of them have already lifted all kinds of measures and everything has returned to normal. Currently the album was released on CD, do you have plans for an LP format release? TL: We love the format, and yes, we have plans to release it later once we start doing our first tours. They have also asked us to release the album on Cassete. We want to make sure to see if that's possible, we love being able to release such a classic format like that, even though I don't have a tape player at home in my childhood we listened to music on tape, and if there was a chance to do something like that it would be great for all. CR: Seeing the very good reception that the album has had since its release, are you preparing tours or are there any plans to focus more on promotion, videos for example? TL: We are organizing a touring plan and we are looking to play in as many places as possible, but with the problem of cancellations and sudden date changes, the best thing for all of us is to prepare everything for the fall. CR: At the end of the interview, what message do you want to send to those who have enjoyed this interview, and thank you for the time granted in this conversation for Conexión Rock Radio
TL: Thanks for the interest in the band Johonny, I thank the people who have supported us with the release of the new album and I invite those who know us for the first time to enjoy our proposal, and we hope in the future to be able to play in their countries. A hug for everyone from Canada. We thank Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey for their help in making this interview possible, and Thérèse Lanz for her time on this report.
