MEKONG DELTA
Temas como A Colony of Liar Men, The Hollow Men y When All Hope Is Gone serán himnos que deberán estar en sus setlist para sus próximos conciertos.
The Music of Erich Zann".
MEKONG DELTA
Music Turned into Landscapes of Great Memories Conexión Rock Radio in its international interviews offers this time to a band that for its career has earned the respect of many around the world for its great contribution to music with interesting albums that through the years are considered by merit own classics, and that in 2020 they return again with a new and interesting page in their history. Our next stop is in Germany, and it is there where we talk with Ralph Hubert, Bassist and the mastermind behind MEKONG DELTA, who shares in this report of the details and good reception that his most recent album called Tales of a Future Past has had. , and which was released in early May through the Butler Records label. This work is number 12 in his career, and that after breaking a 6-year silence with In a Mirror Darkly, the band returns with renewed energy and inspiration, having as a novelty the return of guitarist Peter Sjöberg, who in the opinion of our guest has known to keep faithful the sound and the legacy of Mekong where he states that this album will not leave anyone indifferent and that they seek for their fans worldwide to offer the best expectations. Mekong Delta was formed in 1985, and its current line-up consists of Ralph "Ralf" Hubert- Bass, Peter Sjöberg and Erik Adam H. Grösch- Guitars, Alex Landenburg- Drums, and Martin LeMar- Vocals. Below, we offer Mekong fans this interesting interview: Conexión Rock Radio: Ralf, I am Johonny Gonzalez of Conexion Rock Radio from Honduras, Central America, I send you my best wishes for you, your family and bandmates who are well at home with this worldwide emergency, and it is an honor to talk with you on this day for our readers about the history and upcoming news that Mekong Delta has for its fans in 2020, welcome! Ralph Hubert: Greetings from Germany Johonny, a pleasure to talk from so far with you, and thank you for your time and interest with fans around the world. CR: I start the interview with you in congratulating the band for their new album called Tales of a Future Past, which was released in early May via Butler Records, and many fans consider this to be the work that enshrines the band's career.
How do you feel about writing another great album in your story? RH: That is a interesting question. To tell the truth, after 4 years of daily work on the album, I for my part feel empty. It takes quite a while to get enough distance to that what you have done and to see and analyze possible mistakes which have been made. Before this process is not finished, I am really unable to give a knowledgeable statement. CR: If in a Mirror Darkly was a very acclaimed album by critics and fans, with this new work the band seeks to excel in all aspects, especially the production is one of the highlights. We know that you have been in charge of the production for Tales to the point of achieving a delicious balance between the voice and the other instruments, what experiences has the band left in recording this new work? RH: Oh, nothing really special, or to use the famous words "Same procedure as on every album". Two years for creating the compositions by me, another year for elaboration and basic arrangements, the rest of time was used to record and complete the orchestral arrangements, whereby the latter took a lot of time. CR: A personal comment: this album is perfect for those who meet Mekong for the first time, and who arouse the interest of knowing the rest of the discography of the band, here Martin LeMar shines with his voice! Tracks like A Colony of Liar Men, The Hollow Men, and When All Hope Is Gone will be hymns that should be on the setlist for their upcoming concerts. We want to know what is the concept behind Tales of a Future Past? RH: Yes, it's a concept album. The basic idea - the concept - of the album is as follows: Researchers find the remains of an unknown (past) civilization, discover records (texts) of a person (of our violinist), who describe the problems that led to their downfall finally. And the current problems we have (at the time the texts were written, CoVid 19 was not yet acute) come pretty close to the pictured ones. The cover, painted by the artist David Demaret, was originally for the H.P. Lovecraft story "Mountains of Madness". I discovered it by accident, namely when looking for a special, illustrated book edition of the mentioned story on the net. Caught me directly fascinated, 'cause I immediately had to think of the basic idea of the album, which the painting actually quite well represented. CR: Here we find the Landscape Suite that is divided into 4 parts, Pleasant Ground has caught my attention, although we know that originally between the lines it is called Seville and you include the Spanish Suite.
We know that the band in all their works maintain passages of classical music and in this new album is no exception. What motivated you to include some of the Spanish culture in this album, do you like Flamenco or have you heard classical guitarists from that country? RH: For that you must know that in the age of 12 - I already played a bit bass - I was confronted with a real (!) flamenco guitar player, what impressed me deeply. Finally that was the reason why I started learning classical guitar. A decision which changed my life drastically, 'cause I took rehearsing guitar seriously and played up to10 hours a day. You are right, "Landscape 4" is originally a composition by Isaac Albeniz - "Sevilla" from his "Suite Espanol". With the idea of adapting this song for group I have been pregnant for an eternity, especially since "Sevilla" belongs to my all time favorites on Classical guitar and has been played by me since my youth. If I remember correctly, there was already an ready arrangement for group at the time we recorded the album "Wanderer ..." but that did not fit because of the interludes. Because on “Tales ...” the instrumental titles split the album, so it was I like the title as a conclusion - in the old Mekong tradition of classical adaptations - very well. CR: This album marks the return of Peter Sjöberg as a guitarist who left in 2008 and who returned to the band 10 years later.
How does the band feel about having Peter again? RH: Personally, I nowadays believe that every Mekong album itself is looking for its own musicians. Sounds strange, I know, but the last three albums, especially if you look at the guitarplayers, were not really consciously brought about by changes I made. It simply happened and were positive for the albums afterwards. The same effect can be seen on "Tales ..." also. Erik didn't had enough time to deal intensively withthe riffs, so I asked Peter and the riffs seemed literally written for his kind of guitar playing. In addition Martin as a singer in top form, Alex towering on the drums. And then this bass player :) ...... CR: Mekong Delta for many connoisseurs (and myself included) has been considered an underrated band, but at the same time cult with very important albums such as their self-titled debut of 1987, The Music of Erich Zann, Dances of Death (And Other Walking Shadows), Lurking Fear to mention some examples, we know that the band was not supported enough by labels and this generated that it did not have enough exposure worldwide, but to this day you continue to stand offering your fans and a whole community in worldwide high quality albums.
What makes a band like Mekong Delta special in these circumstances? RH: The cause is probably to be found in the music I grew up with. In the orchestral area the Expressionists (e.g. Prokoview, Schostakovich), twelve tone music (Schönberg, Webern, Berg), as well as contemporary music (Ligeti, Penderecki, Reiman etc.). Additional to that my early penchant for modern composers on the concert guitar (Walton, Britten, Brouwer, Rawsthorne). That leaves traces, you feel and think music differently. In my opinion this could be the reason why Mekong Delta sounds unique. And what is enough attention worldwide ? "Dances of Death" and "The Music of Erich Zann" have, if you count all (legal) album downloads and CDs together, 150,000 sold albums meanwhile significantly exceeded. Some others albums are aspirants for this number. Think that's pretty neat and already speaks for a relatively high level of awareness and recognition. CR: Ralf, in these 35 years of the band's existence with many albums and line-up changes, are you proud of everything you've done to this day? Looking to experience new things in the Mekong sound in the future?
RH: Think that proud is a to big word to use, in my opinion I simply made several things right. From the start Mekong Delta was and is music in progress, a journey, starting with the first album. The foundations for all others were laid on this album. Each subsequent album was a step forward and, at the timeof its creation, represents the status on which we stood in terms of playing, technique and composition. Ultimately, a "Music of E.Zann" without the experience of "Mekong 1st" is not possible, a "Principle of Doubt" without "Music of E.Zann" unthinkable and a "Dances of Death" without knowing how to target the instruments in terms of composition would have been simply impossible. You can take this as a fundamental rule for all albums and I hope to continue that on following works. CR: Dances of Death (And Other Walking Shadows) this year turns 30, do you consider that once the world emergency arises the band looks to make some special celebration for this album or some anniversary edition?
RH: Nothing really special. The only thing is that "Dances of Death" will be re - released as digibook, as already done with the "Mekong 1st" and "The Music of Erich Zann." Guess that we also will print t shirts, 'cause the cover is still very superb. CR: Once the Covid-19 emergency ends, do you have any plans to tour by the end of the year or the beginning of 2021 or do you see that everything is uncertain at the moment?
RH: Basically, we always like live shows. The problem is rather to coordinate the whole countries from which we have requests for a tour. Individual shows are – except big festivals - for us always a extreme logistical problem, all musicians first have to have time. Concerning festivals you usually know this a year before, but at a single show which shall take place 4 months later this is impossible to coordinate. The "funny" thing is that this time several shows in Europe for the first time actually had been coordinated that way, that all of them took place within a month as I requested and not scattered over half a year. Well, this little piece of DNA has now changed our live plans. We will see whether we can organize this one more time for 2021. At the moment I really don't know. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read this interview, and thank you for answering our questions in this special report for Conexion Rock Radio.
RH: As part of Mekong Delta I would like to thank all fans supporting us over the years. Thanx, without you every group would be nothing. And for the future : there are still so many musical things to discover, so many technical boundaries to exceed and share with old and new fans ...... CR: Ralf, thanks for your time, and again our best wishes that the band can overcome this quarantine crisis, the best for you with this new album, and we hope to talk again in the future to continue the legend that Mekong Delta write with good music! RH: Thanks to you Johonny, and the best for you there too, greetings to your readers!
