Michael Feighan

This time we talk with Michael Feighan and Benny Ramos, both Drums and Bass from the band Whitecross who recently visited Honduras as part of their tour called Someone Prayed, the name of their most recent EP and which marks the beginning of an interesting career as a soloist and In addition to the promotion of this material, they offered music clinics in several countries that shared this adventure where musicians and the attending public enjoyed their talent and especially the message that seeks to build the spirit and be people of change in the world. We invite you to learn more about his project, the recording experience and what Michael offers his audience on this occasion, current affairs with Whitecross, Benny's alternate projects, curiosities in the band's discography and the invitation made by this talented drummer in a downcast and convulsed world where in The Darkest Hour... Someone Prayed Conexión Rock Radio: Michael, Benny, welcome to our country and thank you for the time you both give us in this report, which we will share with our readers around the world about the interesting news they have on this tour and especially with the Whitecross news.
Michael Feighan: Thank you very much and I love your name, I would like to have that name Johonny González (laughs) it's a good name, thanks Johonny for your interest in us. Benny Ramos: It´s a pleasure to be in Honduras again and thank you very much for the welcome, Johonny. CR: I start my interview with you both in know how do you feel as musicians to go back on tour again after many months due to the pandemic and enjoy the concerts with the fans. MF: I think it's horrible (laughs), you know what I mean, any musician would be crazy to say this in the conditions we lived in a long time ago, but thank God we are back and we can do what we love, and that It really is a great blessing for us. BR: Everything has been favorable for music in general, we are very happy to take a bus or a plane and start playing for people again, and we know that in several countries they will wait for us to receive us, all this is gratifying to resume plans and pending tours. CR: Let's talk about Someone Prayed, a four-song EP that was released in 2021, Michael, what reactions have you had from critics and in particular from people towards this material already on this new page in your musical life?
MF: Actually this project came out of nowhere, it wasn't something I was thinking about for many years. God gave me this opportunity along the way, I am very happy to be here and to have Benny for this project where we always seek to exalt praise through our shows and play for as many people as possible. With God's blessing we can go much further with what we have and we seek the best as musicians and as people in these new life experiences. CR: Currently, together with Benny, you are touring various countries in Central and Latin America promoting this EP and offering both drum and bass clinics. We know that Benny has previously played in Honduras, but in your case it is your first time visiting us.
What expectations do you have of this promotion that you do in Honduras as part of this trip? MF: My expectations especially in the region are very high because every time we come on tour with Whitecross people have been very receptive to our music, and now that we are in Honduras it will be more exciting to play in countries that we know for the first time. CR: About the clinics that both of you have been giving on this tour, will people ask what kind of music will you play? Rock? Jazz? Metal? Or are you looking to do something different in the setlists you are presenting, such as songs by Whitecross or your alternate projects? BR: I think we're looking to play different things on the clinic side, we have various styles of music that me and Michael grew up on, not just rock and metal, but different genres. Despite being recognized musicians within the Whitecross universe, we seek to teach the public different techniques that go beyond rock and metal, it is not only jazz or putting rhythm and groove to things. The general idea is to include everything in the clinics to give variety to the people who will accompany us in that part, alternating with the tours. CR: Benny, we know that over the years, in addition to being part of Whitecross, you have participated in several projects, and you have also appeared as a special guest with other artists. You recently have a project called Concept, what details can you share with people about it?
BR: It´s a family project where I work with my sister and my son, the idea was born between 2014 and 2015 and we have an EP where we play R&B. we are currently in Chicago, and in the time that the project has been active to date it has been a fun experience for everyone. CR: With Concept are there ideas in the works or for a new material coming soon? BR: Although the band is active, we all have separate paths, for example, with my son we have been working on new material, my sister was the vocalist and she has decided to do other things, so we have several ideas and we hope to show the band soon. people new things. CR: Thanks for bringing us up to date Benny, Michael about this EP we know that people will really like your proposal, we want to know if you are looking to release an album by the end of the year or early 2023, or are you looking to release your material through EP could be a better option for you in the studio?
MF: Absolutely, I'm looking forward to preparing new ideas and polishing new material. You know, whenever I can, I just ask God for direction and opportunities, but yeah, I definitely want to keep doing this. CR: For Someone Prayed, what does Michael offer us in his lyrics?
Personal or life experiences? What details can you share with us about this? MF: This is the first time I have released an EP and I have been in charge of writing the lyrics for these four songs. I have kept them years ago and in them I reflect some things that have happened in my life such as the adoption of my daughter Tatyana and sharing many joys with people when listening to the music and especially what I talk about in the songs, one of those examples is with Joy Of Life It is the reflection of many moments of joy, but also of difficult moments, especially with my wife because we did not know what would happen next, but thank God she is in better health, and at the time I was producing these songs they only told me: leave heart in this project, from that moment I decided that this material was from my personal experiences. CR: People are wondering if with the release of this material you are looking to do something permanent or is this temporary on a par with Whitecross? MF: I think that at this point there would be no problem if one project interferes with the other's plans, so we can agree several things together. With Whitecross there are plans to do new things soon, and I can do more things solo without problems. CR: In recent years Whitecross has had changes in its line-up.
We know that Dave Roberts is the new vocalist who replaces Scott Wenzel. How have you felt with the contribution that Dave has given in these years, do you plan to record something new with him? BR: That's right, we are now in the process of writing new songs, Rex is contributing ideas to shape the new material, since it will be a surprise for the fans, so they must have a little patience since with the recordings we're looking to take the best possible time to release a new CD with Dave now on vocals. So far things have gone very well with him, he is from Dallas Texas, and besides being part of the band he is a great brother and a great person. MF: I think at this point there are probably eight songs completed, so Rex wants maybe two or three more and then the next step would be recording. CR: Is there a possibility of making a version of this material sung in Spanish for Latin American fans?
MF: That is very interesting what you ask me. Seven months ago I made a visit to a friend of mine who lives in Tijuana, Mexico and has a position there along with other people in that place and he told me that they could teach me in Spanish so that I could sing and be able to do the translations of my lyrics in that language, and I told them yes, that I was very interested in learning. CR: Whitecross is a band that will celebrate four decades of existence in the next few years.
How have you felt being part of this journey that began in 1985, and at the same time that you released several albums that are considered classic and influential for other bands, but at the same time that with your proposal you changed the lives of many people around the world, what do you think of all that you have done during all this time? BR: I think it's encouraging for us to know that we have touched a lot of people with our albums in being able to help with some difficult moments in their lives, and that with our songs they have been able to overcome those tests in all these years, it is very gratifying to be able to contribute positive things to them. MF: I agree with Benny's opinion, there are many bands that we listen to and admire especially for the influence and message they express, one of them is Stryper, they have changed my life when I was young and all that was a great impact when listening to their songs and especially the humble posture that their musicians have towards their fans, and I am surprised at how God has chosen me to spread his message and generate changes in the lives of other people, and I continue to do so to this day. CR: Many people around the world consider them as a band that has influenced several generations in all these years, I remember with Hermann Naira when he had his TV show called Metal Mission, there were no DVDs, everything was through VHS. He put in the map very interesting bands like Petra, Stryper, Tourniquet, Deliverance, and many knew you for their classic In The Kingdom, what do you think when someone tells you “thanks to this album or the music you make I follow in your footsteps with my own band ”
MF: They have been great and impressive experiences in all these years. I met a person at a band presentation, and I was talking to him when he asked me to sign a drumstick for him, but I didn't have any more on hand since we had a tour and we had to move the next day and he asked me to sign it a sign with a symbol. I pass the time at 15 years after that night that person contacted me on Facebook and told me that he was the one who signed a symbol on a poster of that concert. He told me that after that he turned away from God, and seeing that poster made him reconsider to go back to church again, and he became a Youth Pastor. When I found out about this change, I was very moved and I just said: that's what God does on the road. BR: There are many people who appreciate us quite a lot, one of those places is Guatemala. There was one person in particular who approached us and told us that he was a bass player and at the same time a fan of the band, and that motivated us to help him personally, spiritually and musically speaking and all that was mutual help, and the factor that let's be an influence on a lyrical level makes us have the challenge of being better musicians and inspiring people to change and look towards God so that they have a better turn in their lives, and by doing that we could say that as people we fulfill a goal. CR: In the history of the band one of its albums in 2022 will celebrate its 30 years of existence, we refer to High Gear, who remembers songs like Dancin' In Heaven, High Gear, Coming Home, I'm Askin' You Today, or I Shout to mention a few examples.
With this new lineup that Whitecross has, will it be possible for people to enjoy revisiting the album on tour? MF: That will definitely be possible, because there is material that in previous years we have not played live, with this new formation Rex has been rescuing many things from the trunk and we know that people will like us to change the setlist in our next tours. In Europe in previous years we included several High Gear songs and we had a good reaction from the fans, I believe that we will have the same impact with slight changes in the setlist or extending some extra things in a tour of the United States and Latin America, but it will be great idea to be able to do that. CR: After this appointment in Honduras, do you have more agendas in other countries, or do you end everything here?
BR: That's right, here we finish the date, although we are working on preparing new shows soon, in the United States for now we have three dates scheduled, but due to Covid there are some places that remain on alert due to restrictions, but now things are beginning to change and several places are reopening their doors to the public, which is positive for the music industry in general. Taking advantage of the fact that the situation continues to be latent in the United States, most of our presentations are in other countries or continents, so for now there is nothing certain in the United States except for the dates that will be announced soon. Once the new album comes out, we could do something together with the United States and Latin America to be able to organize a route for concerts. We are confirmed for a festival in Ohio where we will share the stage with great bands like Saint, Barren Cross, Sacred Warrior, and also people will see a special performance of Petra in their classic incarnation. It will be a pleasant experience to share the stage with them. CR: At the end of this interview, what message do you want to send to those who have enjoyed this report, and thank you both for the time granted to Conexión Rock Radio, it was a great honor to be able to talk with you during this visit to our country.
MF: Thank you very much for this interview, Johonny, and I just want to tell all the people of Honduras that we love you, thank you again for accepting us here this time and we hope to see you again very soon. BR: I want to thank the people of Honduras very much, they are very, very kind and that they have been able to welcome us on this tour with open arms, I have been here twice and I hope to come here another 20 times (laughs) many blessings to all! Special thanks to Hermann Naira of Metal Mission Honduras for his help in this interview, as well as to Rony Gálvez, Michael and Benny for their time on this report.
