MICHAEL SHENKER
Michael Shenker
The Eternal Universal Ambassador Old school Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, but with a sleek, modern twist. This is what we have for all of you in this interesting interview that Conexión Rock Radio has in its international interviews with the aim of offering you the history and current affairs of bands and artists in various parts of the world. On this occasion we established communication to the United Kingdom, precisely in London, and that is where we spoke with guitarist Michael Shenker, the mastermind behind MSG or better known as Michael Schenker Group, who in 2022 presents us with his new record release called Universal, which came out at the end of May through the Atomic Fire Records label. MSG's current lineup besides of Shenker are complemented by Steve Mann- Keyboards and Guitars, Bodo Schopf- Drums, Barend Courbois- Bass and Ronnie Romero- Vocals. In this report we will talk about the reception that the public has given to his new installment, which coincides with the celebration of his 50 years of artistic career, the Universal recording process, the guests that appear on this new album, the changes in his line-up and an interesting retrospective on his career where we all give a standing ovation to this guitarist who has influenced several generations and who consider him the eternal Universal Ambassador. Conexion Rock Radio: Hello Michael, good morning from Honduras, a joy to talk with you, and I hope that everything is fine back home, to be able to share with our readers what MSG has this year. Michael Shenker: Good afternoon from London, Johonny, thanks for the good wishes and an honor to chat with someone from far away, and here ready to attend the interview for your followers there in Central and Latin America. CR: Thanks Michael, we want to know how you felt with the great reception that people have given Universal and that was released last May 27 via Atomic Fire Records and that coincides with the celebrations of your 50th career anniversary.
MS: That's right, wow! 50 years is a long time, and I am very grateful to all the people around the world for such great support, the new album has entered the top of the sales charts in several countries. We are very happy with the release of the new album and soon we will start a series of tours through various festivals where we will celebrate with all the fans the good times the band is experiencing. CR: Taking advantage of all the great moment that MSG lives in its history, and in particular of your career, how do you feel about playing for people again after this time that the world has suffered with the pandemic? MS: Coming back again and doing these celebrations is like reliving my 15 years and especially remembering my beginnings with Scorpions when we recorded Lonesome Crow and then moving on to play with UFO. I see in this part of my life a celebration that I have lived for music between tours and the recording studio, and in retrospect for me it has been a long journey that I have happily traveled so far. CR: As you know the pandemic has left us with a general hiatus of more than two years so far, in 2021 the band released Immortal, for this tour do you plan to present this album within the set, or are you looking to focus on Universal?
MS: Not really. Having everything on par with Michael Shenker Fest, I decided that it was time to record new material in the middle of the pandemic, which would later be Immortal, because having a new album, the idea was to organize the tours again and we had the opportunity to participate in the Metal Cruise from Florida at the beginning of 2020, but with a global emergency situation already declared, being exposed anywhere was dangerous, so it was best to postpone everything and work on new ideas, but nobody knew how long this problem would last. The best thing was to prepare a strategy together with the label for a marketing program that would last 6 months, and the band would also implement one on their own. That way both sides would have a strong promotion for the release of the new album that would be implemented between 2020 and 2021. The idea was to avoid postponing the things we had planned, especially when we were still under lockdown, it was a crazy and difficult situation for everyone (laughs), as you know I'm an artist, I like to create things, and the best thing at that time was to create a new album that would later become Universal, and by the end of 2021 things started to take a different direction and that's where where we started with a strong campaign and managed to make this possible in May. Hopefully the other countries will recover from this strong blow that we have all suffered. Currently with the new album we have several places where we are going to play for October in some cities in the UK, soon we will play Hellfest in France and Graspop in Belgium, we have many shows on a continuous basis, and then we will be focusing on organizing dates. for the United States and Japan from September to November, and it is likely that we will add more dates to our itinerary since we have high expectations to reach as many people as possible.
In the same way there are offers for South America and Australia, we hope to be able to complete these routes as soon as possible having Robin McAuley as vocalist, since Ronnie Romero would not be available for those dates, but once putting together the presentations for several European countries Ronnie would already be with us full time to play the full set including the songs from the new album, but as we move forward in our plans with all the dates already announced the next plan is once December arrives we will see which will be our next countries to visit in 2023, meanwhile we will hold our presentations in the places I mentioned above. CR: If you had the opportunity to record or collaborate with an artist, living or deceased, which one would have been perfect for you, for example?
MS: Of all the people on earth I would have preferred to record something with Ronnie James Dio, he has always been for me a person in whom I have admired and respected his legacy in his lifetime. It would have been interesting to be able to do some collaboration in other circumstances, I think that something very good would have come out of two people who seek to join talents and do new things. CR: For Universal you have had a great list of musicians who have given their special touch to the songs they appear on.
Names like Michael Kiske (Helloween), Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), Steve Mann (Lionheart), Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who), Brian Tichy (Whitesnake and Foreigner), Bobby Rondinelli, Bob Daisley (Black Sabbath), Barry Sparks and Tony Carey What impressions do you have of the contribution they have left in the study? MS: It has been a great experience working with all of them, and I see them as part of a family. In the case of Kiske it was recommended by my friend Markus Staiger (founder of the Nuclear Blast record label) and when he heard some songs in the initial process of the album he suggested that I work with Michael Kiske from Helloween, and I said ok, let's talk and let's work on the ideas for the song, and the result was A King Has Gone which I consider to be our personal tribute to Dio. With the rest of the musicians that you have mentioned I have had the honor of working with them in the past through my different projects, especially with Simon Phillips who has collaborated on several albums years ago, Barry Sparks who was my bassist during the decade of the 90´s, not to mention Brian Tichy who has worked with several Temple Of Rock albums where I had the participation of Doogie White as a vocalist and Chris Glen with Michael Shenker Fest, I must make a special mention of Ted McKenna (deceased in 2019 ) and that I have many memories of his contribution in previous years, especially with The Party Boys. I don't see all of them as strangers, I see them as part of a family as I told you before, we also have the participation of Ralf Sheepers, and I liked his contribution for this new release, and Ronnie Romero did an excellent job with his voice on all songs. Also to be admired is the effort that Bobby Rondinelli, Bob Daisley, and Tony Carey, all of them from the band Rainbow in the Dio era. All of us involved have had a great past in various bands and projects, and for me it has been an honor that with all of them we have written another page in our history as musicians. CR: Michael Voss for Universal is the producer, and he has previously worked on Michael Schenker Fest and Michael Schenker Temple of Rock, what are your impressions of working with Voss again in the studio?
MS: Michael Voss is the Co-Producer, and we have teamed up together since 2012, especially since the time when Michael Shenker Fest was active, Voss has been able to understand my way of working, contributing his ideas both in the lyrics and in the composition of the songs in the studio, and over the years and with the subsequent release of several albums, things improved, and I see in Voss, in addition to a bandmate, a great producer and composer. I can only say that I am fortunate to work with him and make a great duo that has generated a winning formula and I seek to continue with him in that line for future albums. CR: Michael Shenker in a spaceship with his Flying V playing loud throughout the universe... Many will think that music is the universal language par excellence.
What does Michael offer us on this new album? MS: First of all, thank you for your words in your comparison with the ideas that appear on the album cover. That's right, I look at music as a language that seeks to break many barriers, in the lyrics it can be interpreted in various ways and what is sought in this case is that people understand what those lyrics are talking about. Universal has a special meaning for me due to the fact that it has several references on the cover that reveal important moments in my life such as a spaceship that refers to UFO, or my beginnings in Scorpions at 17 years old and what I express in this album is music that goes beyond borders. CR: By the way, Universal is the second album with Ronnie Romero on vocals and Barend Courbois on bass. How was the contact between you and Ronnie for him to be the band's vocalist?
MS: The story begins when Ronnie invited him to participate in Michael Shenker Fest, precisely for the Revelation album, and we were working on the recording of the track We Are the Voice and it was a fast song that marked an interesting experience for all the vocalists. who got involved in Michael Shenker Fest, and Michael Voss told me that he had a great voice that would fit perfectly in the band, and he told me that this person was working with Ritchie Blackmore on the current incarnation of Rainbow, and told me to give him the song as a kind of test for him, and for me it was a fantastic surprise because we recorded the song we wrote and recorded it in one day (referring to We Are The Voice), and from that moment I decided to keep in touch with Ronnie , and I invited him again for Immortal in 2021 to prepare everything for several international tours, especially in Japan replacing Graham Bonnet and people were impressed by him potential that he has on stage, and after that Ronnie became much more involved with the band. When the pandemic was starting to wind down and I decided that it was best to put all Michael Shenker Fest activities on hold to make this present incarnation a more stable and compact band that has only one vocalist, and the option of Ronnie being the voice for this new version of the band it was the most successful by far to add guests that would give variety to the songs among other special characteristics of the sound of Michael Shenker Group so that this band is the main project which I am leading the reins some years ago and with Universal bringing in guest musicians and vocalists like Kiske and Sheepers made the album a delight for the fan to savor from start to finish. CR: Michael, we know that you have a busy schedule with other interviews within the promotional program for this new album, what words do you have for the people who have enjoyed this report, and infinite thanks for the time granted in this opportunity for Conexion Rock Radio
MS: Thanks to all the people who follow us from various parts of the world, we are very grateful that Universal is on the popularity charts, we hope to be able to visit your countries later and enjoy various concerts without fear, now that the pandemic is slowly little is disappearing, and thanks to you, Johonny, for the interest and the conversation from your country. A hug to all and enjoy this album that is for all of you!
