MORGAN REID

MORGAN REID
The Birth Of A Formless Icon Conexión Rock Radio presents a new and avant-garde proposal that is dedicated to those who love Technical Death Metal with touches of progression and speed, seeks to attract the attention of locals and strangers, and at the same time present its proposal to all corners of the world where it seeks build a gigantic fan base that from there would appreciate his talent. From Germany we contacted the Canadian-born guitarist Morgan Reid, who presents us with his solo release called Terran, which was the product of several months of confinement after the pandemic that hit the world in 2020, and which through the support of dedicated government institutions to the support of culture and art in its different expressions, all this is now a reality. In addition to offering this interesting work, Morgan also alternates with another interesting band such as Bloodshot Dawn, who are from the United Kingdom, and according to our guest's words, his proposal does not affect the plans of his main band. We invite you to learn about its history, how this album was conceived in the midst of the pandemic, the concept it presents to us, and the immediate future that this talented guitarist has for the world, and that through its sound invites us to be part of the birth of a formless icon. Conexión Rock Radio: Morgan, good afternoon from Honduras. Thank you for the time you dedicate to us in this interview back home where we will share with our readers the interesting news that you have this year with your solo proposal, welcome! Morgan Reid: Thank you for inviting me Johonny, it's great to talk with someone from far away and very happy to share a lot of news with your readers there in Central and Latin America. CR: Two and a half years of absence, is what the music industry experienced worldwide as a result of this pandemic that took us by surprise since 2020, how do you feel about returning to action with concerts and tours there in Germany?
MR: It's an interesting question. The truth has felt great to return to concerts after a long time of absence. A few days ago I participated in the Faces Of Death tour with my friends from Allegaeon, and I was delighted to see many people who have been able to enjoy the music of the bands that recently performed. On the other hand, with my band we have been finishing our new album, and we have been very focused on wanting to do things right at this moment. We are sure that many people want to be part of the shows again with more peace of mind, and we have made the most of all this time to write new music, in the same way with my album that came out a few days ago. All this has been a very slow process, but it was worth it to be able to launch this surprise for people all over the world. CR: Among those interesting surprises we have one and it's called Terran, this is your first LP that was released on November 25, and for fans of guitar and technical shred this must be essential in their collections.
How did you feel about the general reception the album has been given in these last days? MR: My main priority with this release is to reach as many people as possible and in this way I can exceed expectations, so many in various countries around the world can enjoy my music, and being this a first release it will be difficult to find the target audience so that they can listen to this proposal, now that it is available both on CD and on the platform I have had enough time to be able to publish my album, in the same way I am preparing several videos that will appear on my YouTube channel, and currently for the promotion from this debut there are four singles with their respective videos. Something that is gratifying for a musician is that people buy the CD from you, it is something very positive that people do to support the artists. On my website there is a store where I will put this material for sale despite the fact that hardly anyone uses CDs due to the digital modernity that you listen to everything on the platform or compress it on a device. In my case I'm more of a person who uses these trends, but I always look to support musicians, I don't use Spotify due to the fact that it's not too friendly with artists, although the only positive thing is that you find an infinite amount of music and through the platform you seek to reach many people around the world. Something that I liked is the album cover and the internal art is incredible, since all this is combined with the production and the mix, since everything involved a lot of time in preparing a work of this caliber, and both elements, both covers and music are a complement within an artistic proposal. Probably I would have also chosen to release it on Vinyl, because the format has become popular again in recent years, but as you know it is very expensive and it would be necessary to see if it is possible to make a special edition later for the fans who have asked me to do it. in this format. Many people have told me that the cover does it justice for a vinyl, if the CD art is fantastic can you imagine this on a bigger scale, for that reason I continue to release things and there is my store and my social networks for people to I want to buy them, and I hope very soon that this album will also come out on vinyl, I hope so. CR: We know that you currently play with Bloodshot Dawn and your first album with the band was Reanimation in 2018, what motivated you to pursue a solo career?
MR: With Bloodshot I have been playing since 2015 and I have been playing the role of guitarist and now also supporting vocals. The band has been in constant activity since 2003, and are currently based in the UK. So during this period I have had the opportunity to combine with Josh McMorran (Guitar and Vocals) to make new ideas in terms of composition, and in the end we managed to release an album full of very good songs, and there has been an interesting chemistry. at the time of entering the studio. When I decided to release a solo album that didn't stop my commitments with Bloodshot, since most of the ideas were complete, and now that many things have changed in my life since I am now a father I was looking to do a solo project for two reasons: the first because I do not seek to depend on anyone else. I seek to create my vision in the creative aspect of music, develop my learning of how to record and produce things, since I represent this album as an evolution to be able to fulfill myself as a professional musician, leaving my personal touch in each of the songs that I have composed, so everything arose naturally. In my life I have ventured into participating in guitar contests, and people have responded well to my music, for that reason one of those most important moments was appearing on Guitar Idol where I was able to compete with other very talented musicians, that way. In this way I was able to play in several places for a large number of people, and they will always be there interested in the proposals that come to light continuously. The other reason is that I write music for myself, and that can to some extent make me uncomfortable with the fact that I was focused on doing various things with the band I'm currently working in, I carry a lot of ideas with my guitar, and now With this project I have formed 12 songs that present a strong character within my music, some of them as an interlude, I consider that with this album I have shown the best that I have been able to do, and I only hope that people can enjoy it once. have physically in their homes or wherever they go through the platforms. CR: In this very atypical case, how has the pandemic influenced the writing of this debut album?
Did this situation at home affect you or did you patiently wait for the right moment to prepare this new proposal for people all over the world? MR: In my case, having a Shred or Guitar Hero mentality could be fun for me, because I spend a lot of activity time at home to get really good on your instrument, which means many hours of rehearsal to perfect your techniques, and what? what does it take to be perfect? You need to spend a lot of time repeating the same notes over and over again. My life during all these months has been normal, since I have been in my basement rehearsing and writing music, and not practicing for a long time would make me feel like a fish out of water, and at home I have everything I need, I have a wife and a daughter, I consider myself lucky enough to be able to spend a lot of time working on my music. For many years I have studied as an artist and have been able to set up my life to be able to do the best I can in that aspect of how to generate enough income to keep my cost of living low, and those are things that an artist typically has to do. to do so that he can enjoy his life in a decent way. I have had the opportunity to stream live with various guitarists around the world, and the pandemic has allowed me to connect with more people, so for me this has been a learning experience where I have been able to get a lot of energy and benefit from making this album for the pandemic, and being stuck at home and being able to play the guitar meant that my sanity didn't end up disrupted and recording this album made all my energy channeled so that my creative force gave shape to these songs. CR: The important thing is that all this was achieved and that you were not mentally affected by this challenge.
The album cover is very eye-catching with a futuristic concept, who is the cover artist of Terran? Was it your idea or did the person you worked with have the design in their catalogue? MR: It's very interesting that you mentioned the word futuristic in the visual aspect of the cover. I've done different artwork for the singles I've previously released with the album, additional work has been done on the book of the record. It all started a year and a half ago, a friend who is an architect helped me with the designs and even with the logo, all this effort was made by both of us to shape the arts that would come later and that would only be from the album. We seek to visually represent the music within the futuristic aspect with many aspects and elements of science fiction where energy converges within a post apocalyptic universe. Many of these ideas began to take shape in my last trips and especially when we used artificial intelligence as a resource for the design of the cover and interior arts, since that caught my attention and I decided to give it a try to see what design and ideas could come from there. All this is generated from an art, I come from a family of artists, my father and my sister are painters and sculptors. Seeing the final result of the art was a great impression when seeing the incredible details and references that shaped the concept, I have been amazed at how artificial intelligence can generate an image, and this can be subject to various interpretations, especially after what the world experienced in these years, and I thought if a tree and some effects could bring something to life, and by mixing everything with artificial intelligence the cover will give the world a message at first sight. CR: The sound of the record indicates that the production met the standards so that the songs would literally sound perfect. What experiences did you have in the studio with Sacha Laskow on the production and the collaboration with Florian Schwalbe on drums?
MR: Thank you very much for the comment. I will tell you that the recording process was quite interesting, since I exposed the ideas we knew that we should direct the sound of the music towards the futuristic theme. I am a technological person, I really like to use technology as a work tool, use the recording interface, use headphones and speakers and find the perfect sound that fits my guitar. I commonly use computers and Neural DSP amps, and from the moment I was able to find the right sound for the album it gave me satisfaction and it is a fact that I would use this same method for future albums later on. The mixing and mastering process at the end of the process meant that I had more work with my guitar to tell new and unique ways to express my proposal. It reminds me of when I started playing the guitar years ago, really looking for how to get my own sound and style, being that the strongest points of my learning, in the same way detecting weaknesses when playing and recording the guitars. During these years they have helped me a lot to be able to learn to record professionally and to be able to manage the tracks in the left and right channels and make everything sound at the correct frequencies. After that we proceed with the drums, and I try to find a rhythm that fits perfectly with the guitar notes. I have also developed a drum writing style for my band, so that the drummer can learn his parts, we have used that technique through the MIDI format and through the EzDrummer, I consider that everything used in this project has turned out very well, and as I told you before I will continue using these tools for future releases. We are very good friends with Florian, his work on this album was amazing, and we agreed on many ideas from the recording of the drums via MIDI and the other patterns that the other instruments should follow. The person who worked on the cover art has collaborated on the recordings and who will appear in the video that gives the album its title, and he has made the most of the rehearsal sessions and we improvised new ideas, he contributed parts where the riffs of guitar allowed it and we all had a perception of time, of how the metrics of the songs went sometimes between ¾ and 4/4, and we wanted to sound different from various perspectives. We wanted the sound to be as organic as possible without abusing the facilities offered by computer software. In the studio we seemed like we were giving life to a Frankenstein and there was a lot of complexity at the time of mixing and mastering, these were details that we took into account especially with the drums and as musicians we will seek to perfect that from now on. CR: What impressions do people in various countries around the world have when they hear about your proposal?
MR: I must tell you, Johonny, that internationally, the promotion of the album and the reactions of the people have been more positive. I have been looking for ways to increase my fan base in recent years and I have been measuring the statistics on my networks and platforms, it is definitely an international audience that values my music. Probably most of the CDs would be sold in Japan, for example, but the shipping costs there would be very expensive (laughs), but it's been great to get feedback from people you know, giving reactions to the songs that the album is featuring. , of the different nuances in the composition. I consider that with this solo work I expose my preferences both in heavy music and other rhythms to people, I seek to make the songs have a very important meaning when people listen to them, of how the riffs and structures are made that are developed between the tracks, the concepts and the stories that they present in their background. I guess all those aspects make people know me more as a guitarist and someone who plays fast notes. I can only say that the solos don't overshadow the riffs, and I've had a lot of feedback about it, and I think people will enjoy the music once they hit play, and notice that all the elements in there are real and not synthetic or artificial. CR: Seeing the good acceptance that people have had, many will wonder if your project is something temporary or are you looking to compose and release more albums in the future? MR: Yes, definitely. I think that in this experience I have had too much fun and I think this project will offer more surprises in the coming years, although I must confess that I will focus more on releasing singles, the advantage that here you can offer better production and sound, but also the facilities to be able to launch a music video, that way you can take advantage of creativity to be able to make a good interpretation through the video, since it is a visual expression of art. On the other hand, we know that people seek with these singles to generate expectations of how an album could sound when it is time to release, and I seek to keep this project alive for a long time, also I would not leave out the idea of releasing an EP later, there are many options and paths to follow in order to develop my style and the sound of my guitar that can easily be adapted with my band. Although for now I'm working on a new project with musicians with an instrumental Death Metal proposal very similar to what the band Conquering Dystopia does, so it will be a matter of time when the lineup is revealed and we start offering our music to the whole world. CR: With the heavy promotion of the album, what's next for Morgan Reid in the remainder of 2022?
MR: I believe that despite having a good reception, the album cannot be toured for now, since first I need to form a band, I have many friends who could play this type of genre, and a perfect line-up for this project could even come out. , it could be the perfect opportunity to present it to the public, but I think there won't be enough expectations since the album was just released. People are getting to know me for the first time and I'm really grateful to get this kind of support in the midst of a growing scene where there are some pretty cool bands out there that can play such a segregated genre. If the opportunity presents itself the idea is to be able to do a joint tour with another band, and if a promoter came up to me and said they love my stuff and if I could do something about it I could 100% do something but no I would present nothing at this moment since everything for me is something new, and I want to give time for the album to cement itself in the taste of the people and see what is the perfect moment to do concerts. CR: At the end of this interview Morgan, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this interview, and thank you for the time at home for this conversation.
MR: First of all I want to thank you Johonny for this very good interview, thanks to all the people who have listened to my album both physically and digitally, I hope you continue to enjoy what has been prepared for all of you, and I hope see them soon when the opportunity to do concerts presents itself, I will be happy that many can contemplate what I have with my music. Without your support all this would not be possible, and honestly releasing this album is a special moment in my career, a hug to everyone and enjoy wherever you are with Terran. Special thanks to Davide Pulito of The Metallist for his help in conducting this interview, and to Morgan Reid for the time granted on this occasion.
