MUNICIPAL WASTE
A Powerful Shock That Will Blow Your Brain Lovers of Thrash Metal and Crossover… This interview is for you! One of the pioneering bands of the genre returns with a new album, in which its members seek to meet the expectations of their fans around the world and make this new page in their history memorable in the midst of a pandemic, in addition to repeating that principle that “poison in a few doses is effective”, is undoubtedly a candidate for the best releases in the second half of 2022. Conexión Rock Radio makes contact to the United States, where we talk with Richard Ryan Joy, better known as Ryan Waste, Guitar and Founder of the band Municipal Waste, where we talk about the details, release and reception of Electrified Brain, the band's new album which was released on July 1 through Nuclear Blast Records, and which represents his return to concerts and tours, which were suspended since 2020 as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic. In addition to Ryan on Guitars and Vocals, the band is complemented by Tony Foresta- Vocals, Land Phil- Bass and Vocals, Dave Witte- Drums, and Nick Poulos- Guitars. Get some beers, sandwiches and put on music in your living room, be careful not to turn it into a demolition zone, and enjoy the present and future that Municipal Waste has for all of you in this new episode that will seek to blow up your brain through of a powerful shock. Conexión Rock Radio: Hello Ryan, greetings from Honduras, it´s an honor to do this interview for all Municipal Waste fans around the world, and thank you for the time you give us to talk with you today, welcome! Ryan Waste: Good afternoon here at home, Johonny, an honor to talk to you and your readers here. We are very happy to share with everyone the new album and the surprises that we will offer very soon on tours. CR: Thanks Ryan, we start talking about Electrified Brain, the new album that Municipal Waste released on July 1st through Nuclear Blast Records.
By the way, congratulations, here we have another album that fans will enjoy from start to finish. How do you felt with the general reception that you have given to the album and especially with the start of tours that you are having in various cities in the United States? RW: Since we released the album everyone has welcomed it with open arms, they love it, and of course I've only heard good things, maybe they think I'd kick their ass if they said something bad (laughs) but that hasn't happened. Regarding tours, we already have several presentations ready for August and we will be sharing the road with At The Gates in some cities in the West, we will be presenting in Dallas playing a couple of shows at midnight, and we are very excited in present the new material to the people, and at first glance everyone is liking it. CR: It's a good sign that people are liking the album, and this could possibly be a good year for Municipal, by the way, Ryan, five years have passed since the release of Slime and Punishment and three since The Last Rager EP and then dropped on a two-year hiatus without touring or concerts.
How has the pandemic influenced the writing and composition process of the new album? RW: Actually, we had this record ready like a year and a half ago, we just had to wait to be able to release it last year, but this was all moving very slowly because of the situation that was going on back then, so the label convinced us to wait, and we're all glad we did this, because now everyone is out and doing gigs and tours, and for the band it's a perfect opportunity to make up for the time we lost in lockdown despite that we use those months in the best possible way to make a perfect creative process to be able to adapt it quickly to our tour schedule. All of that depended on the way we worked on the songs, and that is shown now on this new record. CR: Here we have great moments like Electrified Brain, Last Crawl, High Speed Steel, Barreled Rage and Paranormal Janitor. Despite lasting 34 minutes, it lends itself to being repeated and enjoyed as many times as necessary!
What the band offers us with Electrified Brain RW: We try to pack a lot of stuff into 34 minutes if you know our style of course, even though we're not really into playing fast stuff I think with this album we tried to do some different dynamics and tempos that we haven't really done on the album. past, and we've always liked to do speed and thrash metal, fast, restless and wild. It's like that in our sound and it's great because we throw in heavy metal elements thanks to our guitarist Nick Poulos who does a lot of great songs there. I did one or two, but you have to find out what they are (laughs) CR: This time you have special guests on the album: Blaine Cook (vocalist for Denial Fiend, Toe Tag and The Accüsed A.D.) who participates in the song The Bite and Mark "Barney" Greenway from Napalm Death for the song Putting on Errors. What impressions do you have of his involvement with these two songs?
RW: From the moment I wrote The Bite I thought it would be perfect for Blaine, because The Accused are one of the biggest influences on the Municipal Waste sound, and especially the sound of the guitars and especially the vocals that has always been there. He has been able to experiment a lot and for those who are his influence we have loved those elements. Blaine is a great friend of the band, and we have had the opportunity to share the stage with another of my bands like Bat, and we have always liked playing with The Accused in New York, and he is a great guy, and he appears in that song because he is a legend, and for us we look at it as a decision that in its own right should not be questioned. From the moment we mixed the vocals we didn't want just one person to sing them, as you know Phil sings his parts too, and we thought it would be great to have some guests, and that was our final decision. With Barney, we've toured with Napalm Death about 3 or 4 times, he's another character that we've become really close with, and that Ptting Errors was one of the faster songs, so we thought it would be nice to adapt the vocal score and that was perfect for the song. That's why we have Barney giving his personal touch there. CR: With Electrified Brain it is the first album produced by Arthur Rizk with the band, how was the contact between you and Arthur to work in the studio?
RW: I initially contacted Arthur, I like his way of working with bands, he is very professional and skilled at what he does. It helps you create an environment where you don't feel stressed when recording, because in most cases the recording process is stressful, but in Arthur's case things are handled in a calmer way, he is very open to conversations about music, so the time inside the studio was very long conversations. For the band it has been a pleasure to have his experience, in the same way I record something with Bat. If I was asked which producer you feel comfortable working with in the studio, I would say without hesitation that Arthur is the man for the job. CR: Something that caught the attention is the cover, I found it interesting and funny how all the elements fit in with the music, whose idea was it in this case? RW: First of all I'm glad you think it's funny because it was my idea (laughs) I had an idea and to have this character get electrocuted and literally blow up, that's going to be up to the interpretation that the viewer decides on this one, and making him more superhuman with strength, but I had the idea and I gave it to James Bousema, person who did the cover and obviously there's my guitar going through his head and if you look on the back cover there's a grim reaper turning the volume all the way up on the marshall amp so we wanted to be very close to what we actually use it's actually my guitar, they're the marshals we use both in the studio and live, and I think it looks very old school and we've had a lot of great feedback, and James is the pro. James took every little detail and brought it to life. I think it's probably one of our coolest covers we've ever had as far as covers go. It is one of those albums where you tell yourself this is the reflection of what they manifest in their sound, it is the same case when you look at an Iron Maiden cover, it causes that same effect. CR: This is the band's third album with Nuclear Blast since their debut with The Fatal Feast in 2012, how does it feel to be a part of a major label like this in Municipal Waste's history?
RW: We love working with Nuclear Blast, we've signed with them since 2010, so they've spent 12 years working shoulder to shoulder with their team, and what I like about them is that they give us complete creative freedom, they'll never try to telling you that they should do this or that, it's always up to the band alone and that's the only way Municipal Waste has worked as well as it has done so far. We're very hands on with our music and production artwork to begin with, so it's a great and healthy relationship, and like I said we re-signed with them for this record, we could have gone somewhere else, but ultimately we decided to stay with them. CR: Very interesting that the band and the label stay very close to do more releases in the future Ryan.
Municipal Waste is considered part of the new wave of Thrash Metal/Crossover bands that have contributed interesting things since the year 2000, an example of this are albums like Hazardous Mutation and The Art of Partying considered cult, and there is even a band in El Salvador called Hazardous Mutation, how do you feel that other bands see you as an influence? RW: It is an honor that we humbly accept, although at first you never think about how your work can affect or influence other people, we are musicians and we always try to be honest people, what strikes me the most is knowing that a band from your region has the name of one of our albums, that's great for us, and we're very, very honored in that. CR: One of the most bizarre and controversial moments that the band experienced in recent years was the launch of a t-shirt with the image of Donald Trump blowing his brains out with a gun.
Many saw this as an act of courage and expression against a very unpopular figure in the world. I don't know if you had problems with censorship or threats for making an article that is highly demanded by fans to this day? RW: So far nobody has come forward to do anything against me or the rest of the band. As in most cases many people consider that we are on the correct side of doing or expressing things that are not correct, the right word for that point is The Liberal Side, for all of us it was a difficult moment because thanks to the decisions of that person affected millions who live in Mexico, Central and South America, many of them are fans of the band, due to the fact that a wall was being built and that these people did not enter at all costs. Regardless of where they come from, they are people too and have the right to seek better living conditions. So we made a statement that we were against all of that and stood up for those people by initially throwing that shirt at various concerts in Los Angeles. At first I didn't think it was going to be a big deal, but suddenly it became a viral phenomenon, and many people identified with that image, and even the President didn't know who those musicians were who did such an action. Everyone was fed up with him, while he expressed himself in his speeches, the bad image of him increased, and in this way the bush lit up and the effect was not against us, but against them. CR: Who would say that with that image they set a precedent, it is part of the expression of a people if a president has the approval of his people or not, I think that that remains for the history Ryan, among other things do you have plans to celebrate in 2023 the 20 years of Waste 'Em All?
Here the serious question: Tour to revisit the album live, or special edition with extras, what do you think about it? RW: Yeah, we actually plan to re-release Waste 'Em All and we've talked about that in the band, but as you know it would be perfect if our drummer Brandon Ferrell was with us (he was the band's drummer from 2002-2004 and passed away from a overdose in 2016), unfortunately that would be difficult, since the work on a large part of that album, so doing a tour without it I see as complicated, but the most possible thing at hand is to make a reissue of the album with interesting things of the time, so it would be to look for things in the trunk and prepare a special project for the fans. CR: With this new album out on the Ryan streets, does Municipal have plans to perform in Europe or is there a chance to see them in Latin America soon? There are many fans who want to see you in our countries RW: We want to go visit them, that's the idea for the next tour. We had an opportunity to do something in 2010, precisely in Colombia and in other places, but due to issues related to promoters things got complicated, and we have negotiated the best options to play in several Latin American countries, we have made 3 attempts, and we hope that in 2023 everything can improve the whole picture. We just have to wait for the right moment, so our Latin American fans just ask for your patience. One thing is for sure: in 2023 hopefully we will play for all of you. CR: At the end of this interview Ryan, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this interview, and thanks again for the time you have given us to talk on Conexión Rock Radio
RW: Thanks to you, Johonny, your English is very good in conversation, for our fans in Latin America and the rest of the world, thank you for supporting us, this album is for you, and be patient, we are working with our agents to make many concerts possible in your cities, take care and stay informed when that moment passes. Special thanks to Tim Nottorf of the Nuclear Blast press and promotion team for his assistance with this report, and to Ryan Waste for his time on this occasion.
