NAKED SOLDIER

NAKED SOLDIER
A Band That Embraces Chaos Conexión Rock Radio we present to you a new proposal and that with its powerful sound seeks worldwide recognition and at the same time that many people look at their music to learn about their interesting origins and the promising future they have on the national and international scene. From Zurich, Switzerland, the band Naked Soldier arrives in our international spaces, a project that was recently reformed, and that currently presents us with its self-titled release, which was released in August of this year through the Sixteentimes Music record label. Our guest on this occasion is Oliver Corrodi, guitarist and one of the founders of the band, who shares the experience lived together with his colleagues to produce this album in the midst of a pandemic and how they had to learn on their own from everything related. both in production and audio mastering, resulting in a total of 9 songs that will soon be presented to the public through an extensive tour of various points in the Swiss territory. Naked Soldier, in addition to Corrodi on the six strings, is complemented by Janick Sidler- Drums, Noé Burger- Bass, Patrik Schmid- Vocals, and Jonas Nann- Guitars. The band was previously known as Mantra, and after their name change they released their EP called Mirrorspeak in 2021, which has served as their letter of introduction to the world and from the moment they released their material many people from other countries around the world. world liked their sound to the point of having a strong international fan base. Sit back, grab some sandwiches and play some music from this band, find out more about their history and ambitious future plans, and witness Una Banda Que Embracing Chaos Conexión Rock Radio: Hello Oliver, greetings from Honduras and thank you for accepting our invitation to speak in this space about Naked Soldier, and how it has been for you to appear again at festivals and play in various places after these two and a half years later of this forced break in 2020?
Oliver Corrodi: Hi Johonny, on the contrary, thanks for your interest in coming from Honduras to Switzerland on this day. During all this time there were many reasons to regroup as a band and do a new project, and that our history has been going on for several years since we have had fun times, and it all started in late 2019 and early 2020 when covid was declared a pandemic in around the world, we played our shows under the name of Mantra, and our vocalist considered that due to the potential that we all had collectively, the best thing was to change the name to Naked Soldier, we kept that strong essence in our music, and give more meaning to what we projected through our lyrics, here the irony that our music, despite being good, did not have the due exposure on platforms. Once with the changes already made, we decided that from there it was the real beginning of our band with several concerts prepared, many have known us for years, but others will know us for the first time, that is where the expectation will generate an impact listening to our proposal. CR: Let's talk about the self-titled album that the band released a few weeks ago, and that they are currently promoting their proposal at various concerts and festivals.
How have you felt with the reception towards this new material? OC: The launch on platforms was on August 26, it was a crazy experience that we lived when we launched the presentation campaign through Spotify, in the same way a channel on YouTube had the honor of doing a pre-listening around the world, We had comments from people from Serbia and even from Latin America saying that they were very impressed with the material, in Japan we have received a considerable number of reviews. Although we are new to the international scene, it is a fact that we must have more promotion, because in Switzerland there are some doors that have helped us expand our sound, and another challenge is to make our way among a large number of bands that are appearing in several countries around Europe and that has saturated the market. We have had the experience of recording the album ourselves, in the same way with the mixing, mastering and cover designs, we are very active, and in hopes of looking for a record label that supports us at this time. In the next few days we will be announcing when the physical formats will be available. We are contemplating doing a vinyl edition, but we know that there is a lot of demand in the factories and we are waiting for the turn to be able to have them ready, it will be a pleasant surprise for the fans since the vinyl will be a very limited edition, and it will be interesting when the October 21 to start with a tour of various places, which will be announced on our networks. CR: The experience in the stuidio was complicated, did you have more ideas or did you feel comfortable in the process?
OC: As a producer I have had experience with many bands in the last years, and in the same way I have worked for different record labels, on the other hand, producing my own stuff has become a bit more complicated (laughs), when I sit down in I'm a perfectionist in the studio, and I could say to myself: ok, that's fine, as a musician you want to bring life and sound to your records, especially with the guitars. Though if I had a conformist mindset I would say first take it stays there with no need to enhance, repeat or edit but as a person looking for the best sound for my band I would hate that kind of stuff to death so we all had to learn to manage their own recording studios in our homes and be able to send each one their parts, and here in my house I would be in charge of giving the songs a more dignified and polished sound. The experience and the recording process for everyone was easy in a certain part, since all the instruments were recorded in two weeks, the fastest part was the drums and the vocals, in terms of mixing and mastering everything was really great, like I told you before the album was made in my room where I had my computers and other things to make all that possible, and being locked up I felt comfortable and focused on being able to finish the production of the album, for some people they might notice at first listen that the album It may sound over produced, but for us as a band we consider that we achieved something interesting here and we feel proud to have done this with our own hands. CR: In 2018 you released the EP Mirrorspeak, do you consider that there has been an evolution in the sound of the band in these 4 years from that EP to this new album?
OC: It is a good point that you speak. As a band that we had started from scratch, recording those songs and capturing them on the EP was our first step, but evolving our sound and recording a long duration was what made a big difference in our way of composing and making music, we suffered many changes in both sound and members, we played in an experimental and more rock-oriented way, and it was a struggle for all these years to establish a stable and lasting lineup and at the same time have a sound that we can identify with, we even had a female vocalist who was briefly singing with us, many told us we were going for a stronger and more evil approach in our sound, to the point that when we were in a presentation she did not arrive and someone from the public appeared who came up to sing with us, that was a funny and surreal experience. For that reason we decided to do auditions and we were able to find the right singer, and for the rest it was the wisest choice for him to join working with the band. CR: It´s interesting to see how you as a band have grown in so few years, and what is the line of thought that the band exposes through its lyrics?
That is an interesting question, we all contribute ideas both in lyrics and in music to address different problems in our songs, with that we do not mean that we are a band with themes that speak only of politics, as everyone knows in recent years the world has experienced situations where the protests have been the protagonists, in the same way the conflicts between countries, now that we are fighting the pandemic the world has experienced convulsive moments, for that reason we seek to reflect all those problems and be able to solve these things that affect us all . People could interpret that we go out and protest against the governments to solve something at the moment, but we seek to reflect life stories, since in the band our average age ranges from 30-40 years and we seek to make songs that reflect the way we currently live. CR: As you mentioned before you were known as Mantra, but why the change to Naked Soldier? Was it just a matter of copyrights or were you looking to do something new and innovative in your sound?
OC: Actually, it was from both points, from the moment we were known as Mantra, in those days we had a good fan base and our sound was the Stoner, but seeing that we could generate confusion because of the name since several bands carry the name of Mantra or similar variants the best thing for everyone was to change our name and call us Naked Soldier, although people already know us from time ago. About the name of Naked Soldier it was the idea of Patrik our vocalist, curiously it refers to one of our songs, seeing that it was a striking name we decided to keep it that way and it all goes back to a crazy and funny situation that happened long ago , John was drafted into the army and in his spare time he ended up dancing naked at the bar doing a striptease show (laughs), he was literally a naked soldier doing that, and that way without looking for fancy names we decided to call our band that, and we wanted our sound to be more accelerated, it was like going in a car at high speed and your mind going crazy, now with a new identity we want to move on, even though we have our debut album playing everywhere we have many ideas that they are stored in the studio to be able to make a second release later on, one thing is for sure, we will seek to experience new things, improve our capabilities as musicians and composers for a period of two years, and that will be the challenge where we will make new songs and conquer audiences from other parts of the world since we have digital platforms as a fundamental tool to promote our proposal. CR: During all these years of activity at the local circuit level in Zurich, has the band kept its line-up or have there been changes in recent years?
OC: Most of the band has been stable in the last 4 years, and in the pandemic we suffered the departure of our previous guitarist, at first we were testing if everything worked with a guitar, but it didn't work, but the best thing was to give more presence in our sound both in the studio and live, for that reason the new addition as guitarist is Jonas Nann, and we hope that this present incarnation can last as many years as possible. CR: Since the name change and before the pandemic left us locked up, did you have the opportunity to play outside of Switzerland?
Unfortunately we haven't been able to travel outside our country, but we want to have experience in other places, but for the Swiss things can be difficult, but for other bands from Europe they can come to play here because of the value of our currency because of the fact of them earn more, and we are looking for an agent to be able to organize tours in countries like Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and France, we must have an agent who knows how to understand our music and who can open doors in various places, now with a album under our arms we have a great reason to present ourselves away from home and that people can value our work. CR: Currently the band works with Sixteentimes Music, how was the contact between you and the label? OC: The rapprochement was between both parties, the label is made up of people who understand the local bands here in Switzerland and are interested in providing support because they seek to project various proposals internationally, they are a great label and we seek to finalize many projects with them in the next years. CR: The band released the album on CD, do you plan to do any extra surprises for the fans later on?
OC: If we did a vinyl release the track listing would be the same. At first we had contemplated doing a limited edition on vinyl, but due to cost issues the first option at hand was to release it on CD, but if we do something in the old school format where we seek to capture the attention of the listener and that people can enjoy the interior art design, which will be based on a merely conceptual setting, it only remains to tell you to keep an eye on our social networks that this and other surprises will be revealed in due course. CR: Currently, with the album already on the platform and soon to be released physically, do you have a ready agenda or will you seek to focus on promoting it before hitting the road? We are currently about to start a promotion cycle for the new album, and we are working to prepare a concert schedule that can cover from October to December of this year, on the other hand we seek to organize more presentations for 2023, but we must analyze what dates they would be. the perfect ones, especially in summer when there are vacations, back to school and the reactivation of work in general. So the best thing is to look at the calendar for the perfect moment, work with the people in the places where we want to present ourselves, and be able to announce all this in our tour calendar for this last quarter of 2022, and see what surprises we can offer in 2023. CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and I want to thank you for the time you have given us there in your house on this day
OC: Thank you, Johonny, for your time and interest in the band, and we thank the people who have supported us, those who continue to support us, and those who will meet us for the first time, we hope that our music is to your liking, and we hope later to offer new material that we are working on, and if the opportunity allows it to play for you in your countries later on. Special thanks to Davide Pulito from The Metalist for his help in carrying out this interview, as well as to Oliver Corrodi for the time granted back home.
