P: ¡¡¡Somos Neofelis Nebulosa y tocamos Rock'N'Roll !!! On this occasion we spoke with Philippe, Voice and Guitar who provides interesting details about the origins of Neofelis, the experience lived in the process of recording these songs, the situation that the world is going through with Covid-19 and the ambitious plans that he together with Clement- Guitars, Damien- Bass, and Thomas- Drums and seek to realize the history of A Band That Drive Wild in a Crazy World Conexión Rock Radio: Philippe, Johonny Gonzalez of Conexion Rock Radio from Honduras, Central America, greets to you in this day.
We send to you my best wishes for you and your bandmates that are well there in in home, and it's an honor in talk with you and share in this special report with our readers about your history and upcoming news that Neofelis Nebulosa have in 2021, welcome! Philippe: Hi and firstly, many thanks for this interview, it's always a pleasure to be able to have a discussion and to share our music with the people who could appreciate it :) CR: Start the interview of this day in know how it has been for the band in face this situation that affects you as artists there in France? P: The situation in France for an artist is a nightmare. No one can play live, and it's really difficult to go to the studio for rehearsal, etc... This is the reason why we also created a no-profit association, firstly for our band to be able to go back to the studio as only professionals can go to a studio and also allow other bands who will join us to be able to prepare their future gigs. On the other side, you know the situation is also quite funny for us, we create the band in September 2019, we worked hard on our set and we were able to make our first gigs on... March 2020 just when it started to be impossible to play live in France. So when we think about this it always makes us smile :) More, as we are a full DIY band and as our drummer is also the sound engineer we were able to continue recording, mixing, and mastering. So as if the weariness of the lockdown impact us as it's quite difficult to be always motivated with this situation, we continue this work to be able to finish the recording of our first album. CR: Let's put the bad things aside and talk about the release of their debut EP called “EP 1”.
How do you feel about releasing these songs in these strange circumstances, and your expectations with this first step in the history of the band? P: Well, our first concern was to prepare our set altogether, to improve the songs firstly made by Philippe (singer, rhythm guitarist, and founder of the band), and once we were sure about the achievement of our songs we started the recording. So this first set of songs is only the beginning and many songs will come soon (we have a set of 10 songs finished and we already begin to work on a new album ;)). Our expectation? Well, finding our audience and be able to play live because it's really what we love the most. So that's the most frustrating part about releasing our songs actually, the impossibility to share a live moment with people because we think that's the most important and funny part in the life of a band. But well, one day it will be possible again and this time we will be READY :) CR: What experiences has the band allowed to record these songs in the recording studio?
P: As previously said, we are a full DIY band so all our recording, music video, etc are produced only by the member of the band. It's really important to us to share something personal! So it's quite long to provide songs but it also allows us to be more flexible, to present our songs to a limited audience, and then to rework on these if we have some productive feedback. For example, our song Virtual World isn't yet released on the streaming platform but it's still on our youtube channel but following some feedback we have, we decided to rework this song and we record it again (so be prepared for our second EP in the next few months !) CR: Was the EP produced by you or did you have a producer to help you in the process? P: Fully and proudly entirely produced by Neofelis Nebulosa :) CR: I must tell you that the EP is profiled as one of the most interesting debuts this year, the three songs on this EP have their completely different character, and that makes their proposal attractive to young and contemporary audiences, to the point that it can be played on radios.
What reactions have you had from people when listening to your songs on digital platforms? P: Wow, firstly many thanks for this great feedback! It really touches us! Actually, we are really happy because we have some positive feedback from people with very different profiles. Metal people AND rock people seem to appreciate our songs and it was something important to us. Indeed, we don't define our music as a specific type of music but as our roots are mainly rock, punk, grunge, and metal due to our influences, we are really happy to be able to touch so many different music profiles. And you know, the best feedback we had was, "we can't define your music but it's cool, we can hear you enjoy what you do and it sounds little like the Foo Fighters but you don't copy them". It was our expectation and it seems we aimed it :) CR: For those who know your music for first time, what are proposal that the band, and what do you talk about in your songs
P: Well, we want to deliver a real message for each of our songs. We are not political in our songs meaning we don't defend any political opinion, our message is upon all of that. Our songs mainly talk about individualism, the actual way of life which can be really difficult for many people on the economical and human aspect, we also talk about addiction problem to alcohol or drugs, friendship, violence in our society, animal cruelty, depression, etc So our message is more societal. So it could be related to some grunge roots, but we also always try to be positive. Indeed, we think we all have the solution to our problem inside us and only we could change this, nothing is written in the stone! And more, we want our music to be enjoyable and powerful in a concert because we want to see our audience happy once our live is done! CR: Let's talk about the origins of the band, curiously the name refers to the clouded leopard whose name is Neofelis Nebulosa.
How was the idea for the name of the band and how did you meet Clement, Damien and Thomas to join this adventure? P: Well the origin of the name has three signification. Firstly we wanted a Latin name to be understanding by everyone around the earth. Second, as we are all animal lovers in the band so we wanted an animal name. And finally, Philippe is attached to Taïwan (his wife is from this country and Philippe really likes this country and how these people are attached to their country and the defense of their freedom) and the Clouded Leopard is mainly seen in this country so we had the perfect mix (on our point of view ;)). How the band met? Well, Philippe created this band as a one-man band first. He didn't want to create a new band following a bad experience with his previous bands. But the desire to play live was stronger than this and so Philippe decided to call an old friend, Damien to play bass in the band. Then Damien and Philippe decided to search for musician on the Internet and, maybe it could appear weird but when we met Clement and Thomas, respectively lead guitar and drummer/sound engineering, it was like evidence we were made to play all together as if our influences are totally different. Indeed, Philippe and Damien share their passion for grunge, post-grunge era and also enjoy some metal bands, Clement is more metal/prog metal and Thomas really likes jazz music. But we think our differences create our wealth! And our bounds became really strong as we are not only a band but also real friends. Indeed, the human aspect was really important for Damien and Philippe and we are all sure, after more than one year playing together, have a party all together that our bounds are really strong and we don't want to play with some other people! CR: Are you currently looking for a record label to support you, or do you see that working independently is the best option as a band?
P: Well actually, we are fully independent and that really suits us. We really can express our creativity freely, we can take the time we want to be happy about our music, we have no pressure so no - we don't look for a label actually and if one could be interested in our music it would be really important for us to keep this freedom and to avoid any pressure. Indeed, music for us is really a passion and we want to continue making music with this state of mind. CR: With this worldwide emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as release delays.
Being you part of the band, are you aware that this emergency may affect you economically due to the possible drop in salesif the situation continues as it is until now? P: On our side, the situation won't have any economic impact. Indeed, music is our passion but we all have good work besides that because we are aware that living thanks to our music could be really difficult. The only negative impact we see was the brutal stop in our creative process and our projects. Indeed, as mentioned earlier, we were ready to play live but it stops, releasing music isn't a problem for us as we are all able to record on our side and as then the mix is done by Thomas but it's more the stress and the weariness due to this situation which slows down our productivity but we continue working! More, as already mentioned, we are animal lovers and we want to make an association with an animal protection association to share our potential revenue with them but due to the situation, it's not possible actually... CR: What is your point of view on how the pandemic has generated severe changes in the entertainment industry worldwide, seeing as there are no concerts and tours, do you plan to prepare new material this year?
P: Well, on our point of view, this situation has some positive aspects. Indeed, many bands and musicians play music just hoping to make the buzz and to be able to live thanks to their music. But most of them don't realize music must be a real passion first. Creating music, finding his audience, feel confident on stage is really a long and hard work and it's really difficult to live thanks to our art. So this situation made the sorting between real artists who play music as a passion and the others. As mentioned earlier, indeed most bands have to think differently but on our side, we only play music for the love of music so we are still working despite the situation. We also think about making a live stream gig but it's quite difficult to be able to have a really good sound. More, having an audience, making a promotion is quite tricky, mainly for a quite unknown band. So we work on the possibility to play with many other bands to create a fest for unknown bands to mutualize the resource and to be able to attract a good audience. On the other side, we also work on an acoustic set. We think a public park will be the first place to reopen and to play live and find an audience. Once again, we only love to play all together, we don't care about earning money or anything so we are confident about the future :) CR: Many consider that virtual concerts will be an option to stay current on the map with this confinement.
Are you for or against the band doing virtual concerts or will you wait for things to improve to meet the fans face to face? P: We are OK with the virtual concert but we are against asking for money with that. Indeed, for us, it's quite indecent to ask for money for a simple video. If people are happy to see a band, it's the job of the band to give the desire for his audience to buy his merch or to buy a signed CD, on our point of view, buying merch is the best solution to help bands. We think bands must reinvent themselves and take into consideration their success is mostly due to the love of their listeners so bands must be grateful about that and must love their audience!!! So on our point of view, as mentioned earlier we would be OK to make like a fest with some other bands to be able to be discovered but it's not a solution. We really enjoy the contact with our audience, it's the most important moment between a band and his audience and nothing could replace the emotion of a real live!!! CR: Does the band currently have dates that they are rescheduling or will you focus exclusively on the studio with new ideas? P: We really focus on the studio, finishing our first album, we will see later for dates ;) But, we forgot, we have dates, all the public parks in Paris!!! CR: what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview I also want to thank you for the time you have taken to answer our questions on Conexión Rock Radio
P: We are Neofelis Nebulosa and we play Rock'N'Roll !!! CR: Philippe, thanks for your time! The best luck for you and your bandmates with this debut album, our radio station from now have total support for the band in playing your songs in our live streamings, In same way to our friend Davide Pulito from The Metallist PR for make possible this talk with you, and we looking forward in talk again the future with you!
