ON ATLAS´ SHOULDERS
ON ATLAS´ SHOULDERS
A Brotherhood in Arms Epic Heavy Metal appears as the protagonist in the following report that Conexion Rock Radio has for all of you on this occasion, and we invite you to take a seat and join us to enjoy the past, present and interesting future of these musicians who have attracted our attention of many around the world. This time we settled in Frankfurt, Germany, and we talked there with Marius Bönisch, Vocalist of the band On Atlas' Shoulders, who presented to all of you their second album called Hyperion, which was officially released on June 18 both in digital platform as on CD. On Atlas' Shoulders was formed in 2018, and after several live performances they would enter the recording studio in 2020 to record their first album Invictus, which was very well received by fans and critics despite not having concerts and festivals as a consequence. From the Covid 19 pandemic, the band continues to show signs of life, resulting in Hyperion this year. The band currently are conformed by Benjamin Chadwick- Bass and Vocals, Björn Anders- Guitars and Vocals, Marius Bönisch- Vocals, and Leonard Pick- Drums. Completely invited to know the interesting details that the band offers with Hyperion, their point of view of how the pandemic affected them in full recording in the studio, their origins, and of course, the ambitious plans that this brotherhood in arms prepares a once everything is back to normal. Conexión Rock Radio: Marius, greetings from Honduras, Central America, I send my best wishes to you and your bandmates with this emergency there in Germany, and it´s an honor in talk with you in this day for our audience in Latin America and others continents who wants to know about the history and upcoming news that On Atlas' Shoulders have in 2020, welcome!
Marius: Hi there Johonny, thanks for having me and glad to be here! CR: Start this report with you to know how they have felt as a band in dealing with this situation that since 2020 has affected the world resulting in tours and concerts being canceled until further notice. Marius: It sure wasn’t a walk in the park. But we made good use of the lockdown time and produced our second full-length record HYPERION, that just got released in June. Now, we are moving on to the third because gigs will remain scarce. Nevertheless, we hope that by an increasing number of vaccinated people, events can take place again, soon. We are watching out for that to not miss an opportunity to perform live. CR: Inside all the bad there is good news.
The band last June released their second album called HYPERION, and Age of Fire was their first single. What expectations does the band have in releasing this new material in times of a pandemic? Marius: That is good news, indeed, haha. HYPERION was released on 16th of June 2021. All four singles Age of Fire, 5 Billion Years, Ruins and The Executioner (including their music videos) can be watched on YouTube. The entire album is on there as well and all other streaming platforms by now, including Spotify, etc. We still sell the physical version via Ebay, currently, because we don’t have our own shop yet. We hope that will change, when we start making a name for ourselves via live performances. CR: How do you feel about releasing this work in these strange circumstances? Marius: The situation actually became kind of a blessing in hindsight because we realized that time is very limited in general and if we had been touring or doing live performances the last one or two years, we wouldn’t have been able to produce so much material and the second album wouldn’t have been finished now. Also, we realized during rehearsals, that we still need to practice a lot to ensure a good live performance quality. So, the additional time we get through the lockdown periods, were beneficial in that regard. CR: How has been for the band the general reception that critics and fans have given to Invictus, by the way a debut that has been described as one of the best releases in 2020.
We want to know if the band had the chance to present this album to the public before the world emergency was decreed? Marius: First of all, thank you for the compliment, haha. Appreciate it. We are of course grateful for all the responses and reactions and the feedback we received. We were also very pleasantly surprised by the positive review rating of Metal Archives. It still feels abit surreal to me, though and intangible. That is probably due to the fact, that we did not experience live gigs yet. Let’s hope that that changes, soon. As a consequence, we were also not able to play INVICTUS material live before the pandemic hit us. CR: For this new album the band was in charge of the production process or did you have a producer to make this project possible?
Marius: For HYPERION, we produced everything ourselves again like it was the case with INVICTUS. We also continue to do so with the upcoming third album. No external people are involved. CR: We know the band plays epic heavy metal
For this new work will you have something conceptual, or will we have different stories around the tracks? Marius: It will still fit the genre epic heavy metal and the record HYPERION is also still pretty diverse and has experimental elements in it. However, it is a more refined package now and we incorporated a lot of feedback we received from INVICTUS. Production quality has increased tremendously. Björn, who is teaching himself all this mixing stuff on his own, had (and still has) a very steep learning curve when it comes to that. So, the mixing quality is probably the biggest change of all. We also cut down the length to 10 songs and the songs themselves are a bit easier to access for the listener. That doesn’t mean that the record is less creative, though. On the contrary: I believe we make better decisions in terms of songwriting now, than before. As a result, everything is more coherent. CR: For those who hear and know the band for first time, we want to know about the origins of On Atlas' Shoulders, how was the idea in make a interesting band like this?
Marius: On Atlas’ Shoulders formed in November 2018, when Ben and I met for the first time after we got in contact on a musician’s matching platform. Very soon after that, Björn applied also and a while later, Leo joined us. We all had the goal of being a metal band and had a rough idea on where to go in terms of style. That being said, after the second record, we still haven’t quite found our perfect tune, yet. That is supposed to change on the third album. The name On Atlas’ Shoulders comes from a saying in science and philosophy, which is called “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants”. It means that progress is being made on the basis of groundbreaking theories of giant people like Albert Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton. We coined this theme onto the music realm and carry on the legacy of our musical giants and idols, such as Dream Theater or Judas Priest, for example. CR: What are the influences that the band have in their proposal?
Marius: As mentioned, there are Dream Theater and Judas Priest. But there are also bands like Breaking Benjamin, Lamb of God, Avantasia, Accept, Iron Maiden and many more that influence our style. CR: In the history of On Atlas it begins in 2018 releasing singles, to later record and release Invictus and now in this year release Hyperion.
How do you feel when you see that the band goes far with their music to conquer new fans? Many will say that the current line-up is perfect, comments ... Marius: It is awesome to see how the band and its fanbase is growing of course! It’s a good feeling to see your music out there in the world and people listening to it from all around the globe. At the same time however, it is still a bit surreal, like I said. I hope the effect can truly kick in when we start with live performances and actually get to see people in front of the stage and not only through a computer or smartphone screen. CR: In recent years, have you the chance to play at major festivals or in several places inside or outside of Germany?
Marius: We had the opportunity to perform two streaming gigs in Bonn during a band contest. The third one is coming up now on 4th September (again at the RPZ in Bonn, Germany) and this time it will be a live show. We are very excited about that! Is the band currently looking for a label to support you? Or do you see that working independently is the best option? Marius: For now, we will stick to working independently. We are saving a lot of money and the results that our guitarist Björn produces are getting better and better. Also, our way of working and recording, fits this independent style perfectly since we can record our own parts individually from home and just send it over to Björn for mixing. No need to make appointments with anyone and we were able to keep our distance from each other during Corona lockdowns. This approach has served us very well so far. CR: With this global emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, in the same way this has forced several bands to delay their releases. As you are the voice and part of the band, are you aware that this emergency could affect you financially due to the possible drop in sales for physical formats?
Marius: Thanks for thinking that we sell enough to be affected by it when it drops, haha. The truth is however, since we started out in lockdown times, we do not have any values to compare it with sales in non-Corona times. So, I actually don’t know if sales have dropped in genreal, haha. We sure don’t sell any tickets, that is true. However, it doesn’t affect us on an existential level since we are all working full-time anyway and the band is still a side-project in our lives that is being financed by our main jobs. We hope, it will grow into something bigger, though. We’ll see. CR: Once the emergency is over, do you have plans to tour in the next few months, or is there nothing finalized for now?
Marius: We want to get touring as soon as we can. We actually reserved two week of vacation at the same time to be prepared for touring this year but since Corona persisted, we couldn’t realize that plan. We certainly want to do all of that as soon as travelling and performing is doable again without any kind of hindrance or restriction. We don’t have concrete dates yet, though because that is still too uncertain. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this interview? In the same way, thank you for the time you have given us on this day for our readers on Conexión Rock Radio Marius: Thank you all so much for supporting and being interested in our story. Feel free to check us out on our website or on all streaming & social media platforms such as YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Instagram, Facebook, etc.. And a big thank you again to Conexión Rock Radio for having me! CR: Marius, thanks for your time!
