PESTILENCE

PESTILENCE
The Victorious Return From A Global Extinction One of the cult bands of Thrash and Progressive Death Metal is back, and this time with an album that will undoubtedly be one of the best releases in this 2021, and Conexion Rock Radio we offer all of you an interesting interview where we address important points in their history, and of the bright future that they seek to achieve once global conditions improve after the Covid 19 pandemic. This time, we establish communication to the Netherlands, where Patrick Mameli, Founder, Guitar and Voice of Pestilence receives us at his home to share with all his followers the great moment that the band lives and that they are back in action with their new album. called Exitivm, which was released on June 25 through the Agonia Records label, and for fans and critics they have already considered this new release as another consecrated classic in their career. Along with the release, Mameli comes with a strong and renewed line-up, which is complemented by Joost van der Graaf- Bass, Rutger van Noordenburg- Guitars, and Michiel van der Plicht- Drums. In this report we will talk about the concept that the band offers with Exitivm, the new line-up, their position in the face of the pandemic that has paralyzed their plans, curious things about their history and of course, the important plans that these talented musicians have prepared for all of you in this glorious episode where you have fought from extinction ... to a victorious return. Conexión Rock Radio: Hello Patrick, greetings from Honduras, Central America, I hope everything is fine over there and for us as a media outlet it´s a great honor to make this report with you where Pestilence fans will know about interesting things that the band has in this year. Patrick Mameli: Thank you Johonny, it is a joy to talk with you on this day and share with our followers in your region and on other continents what we are doing, in the same way we return our good wishes for you, we know that things are not right there all good, and we wish you all well out of this pandemic. CR: Thanks Patrick! I start this day's interview with you to know how things are there in the Netherlands with the issue of the pandemic and in the same way the position of the band before the cancellation of plans and tours due to this problem PM: Well, you know, for us it is not very often that this type of thing happens, the only thing we had to face was this confinement and therefore we could not tour outside the home, so when we recorded the album in Countries Basses we had no problems during the process, and once it was released we had good responses, especially from the North American Billboard charts where we had a privileged position. And for now we are hungry to do shows again, but that will depend on the direction that the pandemic is taking around the world, for now we are all waiting for what may happen later. CR: This is Patrick, it takes time and patience to see how everything unfolds.
Among all the bad we have good things, precisely from the band's new album called Exitivm, which is number 9 in Pestilence's career, and which came out at the end of June via Agonia Records, and here we have a great candidate for the best of 2021, and by the way congratulations on the recognition that Billboard has given to the album. How have the reactions of fans and critics been from the moment Exitivm was released? PM: After a long process I am very happy that the album has been well received around the world, and as a band it was a difficult test that we had to overcome in relation to making an excellent release not only for the fans, but for the we as musicians who have committed ourselves and decided to give our best in the studio. From the moment it came out everyone commented that this work was of a very high standard. Raising that standard, creating new music all the time was to make sure that we have to make a combination to make the best album, and I think that with this time of confinement we really did it very well as you said we are positioned in several charts internationally, and we've had very positive feedback to the point of being hailed as one of the best Works of our career. So I am happy with all the results obtained so far. CR: Many look at this new work as the younger brother of classics like Testimony of the Ancients and Spheres, to the point of saying that there is a magic between the classic and the new of Pestilence, what do you think about it?
PM: I am very happy and at the same time very blessed that people are comparing this new album with my other works without having to be compared to any other band, so that means that we have created and improved our own style over the years. All this is focused on making our sound a kind of real entity. This is the proof that I have bet on all my albums and all the knowledge that I have acquired in all these years, and perhaps, at first impression, they would hear sounds that remind us of Consuming or Testimony. For that reason, Exitivm exists as a project that was born some time ago and is now a success, and as I told you, I feel very blessed. that people compare this new project with my previous ones, and that's why it makes all this much more enjoyable without comparing the work of other bands. CR: We want to know if you have received comments on the band's social networks seeing the success and the very good reception that Exitivm has had, many will say that Pestilence is enjoying a second youth, what do you think about this? PM: Well, I think in every album that I make, I'm trying to make the best album of all time, but this time I think that what really makes the difference was having a lineup made up of only Dutch, which gives me the opportunity. working with these people are closer, and have a good musical relationship and share flight and road hours. Seeing the difficult times that we live with the pandemic we all live in Holland, it makes things easier to talk about music and interact from person to person. Also as a band we are in a single harmony with what we want to do and we have no language barrier and no mentality, due to the fact that we are all from the same country, and this over the years makes this new lineup more stable in all the senses in relation to the previous ones.
CR: Exitivm also marks important changes in the history of Pestilence with a new line-up: Joost van der Graaf, bass, Rutger van Noordenburg, guitars and Michiel van der Plicht, drums. What impressions do you have of working with them in the studio? PM: Of course these guys are very well trained musicians so they are not like strangers because I always try to work with the best and they are some of the best I could find in the Netherlands. It was much easier when you have one person who knows the other and who knows what the other person is, and everyone knows each other in a country as big as this. For example, Rutger, the second guitarist I met with his band Bleeding Gods, and the opportunities I have had to see him in concert has left me impressed by his technique, energy and stage presence, and I thought, he is perfect for Pestilence. So later add a new Bassist and Drummer. Seeing everything that has happened since the entry of all of them in the band the chemistry has been more than favorable, and I look at this lineup and include myself as a big happy family. CR: very interesting this Patrick, seeing the good comments you have from the rest of the band, during the process in the studio they gave you ideas for music or lyrics, or did you have everything previously defined? Because definitely the chemistry is latent in the execution of the songs
PM: No, this is something that I have done all these years with my music since I am in charge of doing the general composition of the songs, and sometimes I have the help of very talented people. For example, Joost, my bassist, has written some lyrics for the songs and I have no problem, but musically I am the main composer within the core of Pestilence, for that reason people get familiar with the sound of the band and say “this What sounds is Pestilence ”, so if there are different ideas that are presented to me first I analyze them and put them elsewhere and I would say that this could fit in another project and not necessarily in the band, and why all this is simple: Pestilence It is my project and I make sure to write the best music for the band so that people can recognize it directly and this is just a distraction for me to compose and have a music that is specialized and at the same time appropriate within its sound. CR: I must tell you that this album will be enjoyed by many people from beginning to end, songs like Morbvs Propagationem, Pericvlvm Externvm, Sempiternvs, Mortifervm, Dominatvi Svbmissa, among others are highlights of Exitivm. How does the band feel about releasing a great work like this in these strange circumstances, with no tours, no concerts? PM: Thanks for the compliments to the album, we know that many like you regard it as a favorite. As I mentioned before, every time I try to write an album I try to write the best music possible, but while we were recording this album I knew that the chemistry with the rest of the members was very stable, and it really was something magical. They all brought their talent in the execution of their songs, I give them the music, but they express themselves by putting their own style, and I thought this was going to be a huge album and, as I said, the musical sphere within the band is constant and changes with Over time. For that reason each album seeks to deliver quality to the fans, and that is what I have been doing for all these years with Pestilence. CR: The cover art is amazing, courtesy of Michał "Xaay" Loranc and this is his second work with the band since Hadeon.
Does Pestilence tell us that the world is facing extinction with this pandemic? Patrick, what is the concept behind this new album? PM: The main point in the music of Pestilence is that we reflect the problems through the lyrics. We want to write lyrics that are really realistic and have some kind of value, and we're not really interested in trying to sing about Satan, zombies and stupid things. More than taking things from television, we want to put a message in our music to tell people that it has always been the same, do not let yourself be indoctrinated by the external and that you listen to your inner voice, because when you question something there is a small voice in your brain that talks to you and tells you that this is the truth, and that little voice tells all your secrets correctly because you are right, people are trying to put garbage and crap on social networks and in the media, and you know not It is true, it is my duty as Pestilence to sing about these problems in the world. Problems that speak of religion, poverty, discontent with politics, problems that we face against greed and hatred, and other factors that have accumulated over the years such as kneeling before the powers, and for all that no brings positive results. So I want to make sure that people realize that Pestilence is not only serious music, but also has a serious message to think about for yourself so as not to be influenced by the external and by the media because you can make your own decisions and that nobody can control your life. CR: What you say is very interesting, and that's why many fans look at Pestilence's proposal and especially its lyrics as something special because it talks about real issues that people face every day without the need to use fictitious situations or stories. MP: That's right. I have been doing this for over 30 years, and when you get a little older you start to think about life in a different way and I hope we can reach a lot of people who can take things in from a wise point of view. I'm sure they get the message and therefore there have sometimes been times when people want to fool me, for example they want to call me paranoid or I do conspiracy theories, you know, or I have something against vaccines, when in fact I am against all these political aspects that affect many and benefit a few. At this point I just want to make sure that people have their minds and eyes open to absorb all the information that is out there and that they can make their own point of view with real things. CR: Something that draws attention are the titles in Latin, we know that there are titles like Mallevs Maleficarvm or Consvming Impvlse for example.
What motivated you to be curious about Exitivm? PM: The titles are in Latin because we think that drawing the attention of the fans is to discover the reason and why of the title in its meaning so that people inquire about what we are talking about in the lyrics that they involve in an album that instead of simply describing a title and not knowing what you are describing. It is important that many analyze the titles and the context they carry, so that people will know at first impression what you express through an encrypted language. That is why we look in all our albums that our fans are interested in our music as a band. CR: This is your debut album with Agonia Records
How does it feel to be a part of this label that now supports this part of the band's history? PM: Well, if everything were different, we would be on a much bigger label like Nuclear Blast or Season Of Mist to give you some examples. But I have preferred to work with a smaller label that will seriously bet on Pestilence both on a promotional and professional level, and we have a mentality of being a great band within the label. When we were signed by Agonia Records we knew that we had to put the greatest possible effort into this project, and that this group of people in the same way the band focused on making Exitivm a reality. CR: That is a point of view on the changes in the industry. Many bands seek to work with major labels as you mentioned a while ago, but from the experience lived through the years you seek to make a difference with a label and show that with little you do a lot, and people will think that the result of launching Exitivm With Agonia Records it was currently the best option the band has ever had in their career, and everyone hopes that this working relationship will bring out more record releases. PM: You are absolutely right there, I had to learn from my mistakes back when the band was signed by Roadrunner and Roadracer. Even after almost 30 years they owe us royalties, which I can directly consider as a financial fiasco. They demanded that I record more albums, but the best thing was to ask for the freedom letter, so now when the band works in a label we will try not to make a contract for a large number of albums, we collectively seek enough creative freedom and to do what we want with our music. Something is certain, with Exitivm and seeing the good reception that we have had in Agonia Records, we seek in the future to maintain a cordial and fresh relationship with them to decide what our future will be there and if possible, to make another album with them. CR: Being the mastermind behind the band, what is your point of view of the musical evolution that the band has had from Mallevs to this new one. Do you have any comment from the fans if this evolution has been favorable or not in the sound of Pestilence?
PM: I think that musical taste influences a lot both the fans who have followed us since the early days and the new ones who in recent years have joined along the way. This is like loving or not loving a color for example red, or that you like the color blue, how are you going to argue if the color red is better than blue? Sometimes comparisons and discussions in music are based directly on that. An example is when people listen to Consvming they will say that this is their favorite album because you grew up with it among other reasons. There will also be others who have heard Testimony or Spheres and will have that same effect. As for the younger people, they will look for the most recent material. While older people stick with the first four albums and literally many are stuck in time, and it's understandable because it's classic stuff, it should also be added that all of those albums came out at a time when there were a lot of good bands. Pestilence over the years has changed their lineups on each album keeping a fresh focus on our sound so that it is accessible to people. As a musician I try to be at the level of my bandmates in terms of execution, as well as collaborations in each work and making a high quality product. Now things have changed after 30 years, everything is easier, you can make your own video yourself. When we started the recording process of Testimony of the Ancients we felt that we were not all at the level we wanted, and each work represents a moment in our history and how we live those days, when you have the records in your hands it is like opening one. window in time and you look at photos from 1980, another from 1990 and one from 2000, things change but you are still the same person, and that's when you realize that a combination of the people you work with and how influences it. the album came out in those days, for that reason many albums, including ours are very special. CR: One point that you have touched on is the fans who have known how to value the band's music over the years, we know that many look at the first four albums as classics, and in recent years many young people have known them for the new material but that suddenly for their interest seek to investigate the past of Pestilence. What impressions do you have about the valuation of the band's music currently with a new album released?
PM: I always see it that way when you grow up and age as a person. You look back at the moments in life that you enjoy the most, and these are the moments in which you keep talking to other people, especially those who have lived those years, and who have valued everything that came to light in those days. , and many look at music as a value that is treasured. For example, to value things that many bands like Testament, Death, Morbid Angel and Possessed made the 80's and 90's were decades that people lived and enjoyed to the fullest, and in the midst of all that Pestilence released in those years those four albums that to this day are classics. From an analytical point of view, if I evaluated the music of Pestilence, it improved over time, as did the musicians who contributed to each of those works and my vocal capacity. All this framed in a sonic spectrum that adding the other albums that came out in later years made it more enjoyable. Exitvim by far I consider it as my best work with the band to this day. CR: Thirty-five years of career, 9 studio albums ... it's quite a story
Are you satisfied with everything you have achieved to date? Looking to experience new sounds in the universe of Pestilence? Everything indicates that Exitivm is the album that will define a pattern for future releases PM: Yes, all of this was definitely the result of working with the current lineup. To be at this same level we must measure our musical abilities, since they are high-level musicians, to give you an idea two of them teach classes with their respective instruments, and we try to have fresh ideas. We have an open mind to hear new things. I am proud of the work that all of us have done equally and I can speak for myself that these musicians are of high level because they are able to understand and translate my music. CR: For many, Pestilence is a cult band both in their career and discography that have enshrined them during all these years. Is there a formula for these albums to be considered gems by the entire metal community around the world? PM: This is my goal that I always strive to be the best person I can be at any given time, I have always sought to make and formulate the melody inside my head and build songs for the new album. But for now, my focus is on promoting Exitivm, and we are preparing a special project for the 30 years of celebration for the Ancients tour where we will combine the new album and some extra surprises, the process by then will represent a new challenge already. Once I advance, but I have confidence in the current members because I believe that they can take a step forward, and that is my goal when that moment comes, to compose, do new work and deliver high quality music to fans that they can enjoy. CR: Speaking of Testimony of the Ancients in 2021 it celebrates its 30th anniversary, in the same way Doctrine celebrates 10 years.
Seeing all these ambitious plans to celebrate this classic as Ancients with a tour, do you have any plans to do an anniversary edition with extra material or content? PM: I must mention to you that in the discography of the band their albums are not all equally popular, you mentioned Doctrine who is 10 years old, maybe people will not like to talk about that album for now. It is very understandable that each fan has an album that sees him as his favorite. The intention of the anniversary is to show respect for both the songs that Testimony represents, and the cult that many people have to this day. We have been lucky to be one of the few bands that have survived through time as well as other famous names like Obituary, Deicide and Morbid Angel. I look at Testimony as a very special piece of work in our career, and we want to play the album from start to finish, and for people to enjoy what many consider to be the most iconic point in Pestilence's history. I'm honestly almost 55 years old, so I'm not young. But, anyway, I search and find the energy to continue doing what I like, and I do it for the love of Death Metal and for the fans, nothing more. CR: During this time of confinement many people have been left without work and with little money, the digital platforms at a certain point helped the bands while people resumed their jobs and so that they could buy CDS and Vinyl.
Piracy in recent months has been in great demand, and unfortunately for those who cannot buy material, they see this as their "cheapest option" What do you think of this situation that has affected bands and labels? PM: In itself it is not only the pandemic, but when the Internet became the most powerful format you know and today everything is difficult for record companies and bands alike. All that reminds me of when Metallica had its conflict with Napster years ago, and unfortunately for the industry this game only implies one result: losing. Here the only way we can survive against this problem is to live on tours and sell our merchandising in the places where we are going to play, and for us as musicians all this has been very difficult, since for fans to enjoy our music or A concert is relaxing and getting out of stressful reality, so I don't blame people for trying to find a cheaper way to have music in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. Sometimes many have to suffer for not being able to buy the material your favorite band in the physical format, for that reason there have been festivals where access has been free. We know that everyone is going through a difficult time right now and to be honest I don't think governments really care about the people and more about us culturally in relation to festivals and live shows. Sadly I must say it like this: they don't care about us. CR: Despite all the bad things we have experienced during all these months, many bands have risked recording and releasing their albums, this gave as against all the prognosis and the faith of the people that many albums would have a positive impact in the midst of The pandemic and Pestilence is also part of that effect, and with patience everyone is waiting for things to normalize for the sake of the scene, the concerts and the tours.
PM: I think that with the pandemic and the forced confinements in our homes we have all missed something and it´s our freedom. That freedom that you feel when you go to a concert and that you can interact with people and with other bands to have a good time on the road or in a concert hall makes everything a good experience. When the pandemic arrived, that freedom was uprooted, and with it our experience of living a concert, and that is where you express yourself with your mind that all this must return as it was before where freedom was breathed and without the need to feel fear. Unfortunately, under the conditions we currently live in, it is very difficult for a promoter, for example in Latin America, to organize a concert tour, since now governments will demand more rigorous controls in shows, such as that people who want to enter must be vaccinated, and For many this can be an outrage on their right to express themselves freely, and bands, fans and promoters have a long way to go to make everything as it was before, the pandemic has forced us all to pay a high price , but people may never think about it, and many must realize that not everything is free, including your freedom. It is for this reason that the entire metal community around the world must unite against such political thoughts, because thanks to that a few around the world control everything. CR: Speaking of tours, a few years ago you and Sinister were performing in various countries, here there was a strong expectation to see you, but for reasons beyond the control of tour managers that was not possible. We know that Sinister were passing through Honduras to continue their tour, I imagine you have had questions from many people when that problem occurred PM: In Honduras there was a logistics problem and especially with the local promoter. There were many people who have been waiting for us in your country and I am very grateful that they have written in our networks and that they have insisted that we play there. But sometimes when you go to places where you play for the first time you may or may not trust a promoter, unfortunately things did not go as expected, but we hope to be able to play later for the fans of Honduras and that they can enjoy the new album and if it´s. possible of the anniversary celebration. Unfortunately the bands when they go through these things face the feeling that the dates are played in a casino, or in the worst case a Russian roulette is lived (laughs) but that's the way things are on tour. CR: Many bands around the world see Pestilence as an influence
What is your point of view of this generational change where many bands mention you. PM: I am honored by comments like this. But to be honest my advice to all bands around the world is not to listen to bands that look at them as their favorites and try to invent their own sound. We know that many people over the years have listened to bands and have grown up with them. In order not to go too far, music is like Pizza, they all have their ingredients that can differentiate one flavor from the other, although in reality they all taste the same (laughs) so when I prepare something for the fans I make sure it is 100% Pestilence. Young bands can follow our sound, but don't be totally influenced by it, and when they do different things many will say "this sounds very original and not like Pestilence" CR: Has the band been contemplated soon as part of the promotion of the new album to present it in a streaming concert? Or you are of the opinion that the best thing is to wait for everything to normalize and play everything in a concert in person with the fans. Comments ...
PM: We have tried to do a live broadcast, and we really didn't like the feeling of doing this kind of experiment. When you do that you try to give your best songs and your best but in front of a camera, from there you don't hear applause and you don't have the energy of the people, and that is a very strange feeling. We as a band look for the energy and the screams of the people in a live concert, seeing them enjoy the songs and being face to face with them makes a big difference, and it only remains to wait for the rooms to open and to be able to do good concerts. for fans. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans to tour Europe, the United States or Latin America for 2022, or is everything uncertain for the band for now? PM: To be honest there is nothing planned for now while the pandemic is still latent around the world, so for now in addition to promoting the new album is preparing the anniversary tour of Testimony of the Ancients. As you know, this process of returning to normal again will be slow, and if we do tours in Latin America it will be a bit more complicated seeing that in several countries the incidence of infections is very high, and also they would not accept people who come from Europe or other neighboring countries, so in both points, if plans were to materialize, it would imply a high risk of cancellation or contagion either in staff or in musicians. So a tour for now would not see it possible in the near future, and the truth is no one is a fortune teller to know when everything will happen or when the pandemic will be controlled. We are all waiting for things to change, and especially with new vaccines that can control new variants such as Delta for example. So for now we will focus on Exitivm and future plans for Testimony. CR: Patrick, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for taking the time to do this special report on Conexion Rock Radio. PM: I just want to tell the fans to keep the faith, make sure to follow the band on their social media and stay tuned for our news. We will try once things are normalized to make the best effort to visit their countries, be it Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras or Peru. We do not know with certainty if 2022 or 2023 will be the ideal times to travel, but we definitely want to visit countries where we have not played before, but let everyone in Latin America and the rest of the world know that something is certain: when Pestilence returns to the road, let's hope for you in the places we are going to play, from the fans we expect their love and devotion for the band. Stay healthy, safe and be patient as we hope all of this changes in the coming months. CR: Patrick, thanks for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! In the same way, to my dear Friends of Agonia Records for making possible this talk with you back to the Netherlands, and that this is the first, but not the last interview that we have with you to follow up on what Pestilence will do in the future. Take care, and have a perfect day at home! PM: Thanks to you Johonny, take care of yourself and we hope to be able to talk on a tour, and hopefully that will happen very soon, trust that everything will go well, a hug for you and your readers in Honduras and in other countries around the world! Special thanks to Bartek and the entire Agonia Records Press and Promotion Team for making this interview possible, and to Patrick Mameli for the time allotted for this report.
