Nuestro último trabajo fue nuestro EP llamado The Eyes of Horror.
¡Stay brutal!
Possessed A Brutal Return With Many Revelations Exclusive for Central and Latin America
A Legend rises from the dead or hell itself to reclaim its place on earth, and for many of its fans their prayers were heard ... 33 years of waiting were worth it (curiously the age of Jesus) for this return was a reality with lineup and new album, which send a message to the world: Come back to stay!
Conexion Rock Radio talks with the vocalist and founder of the Death / Thrash Metal band: POSSESSED, Jeff Becerra, who welcomes us into his home to share in this interesting interview that the band has with the launch of their first album in 33 years called Revelations Of Oblivion, which will be released in the first days of May 2019 via Nuclear Blast Records worldwide, and to mark a new and interesting chapter in its history.
Possessed besides Becerra in the Vocals is complemented with Emilio Marquez- Drums, Daniel Gonzalez and Claudeous Creamer- Guitarras, and Robert Cardenas in Bass.
We invite you to this interesting interview where we deal with some aspects of Possessed's career from the point of view of our guest, the changes of formation, the accident that would leave him confined to a wheelchair and the struggle of a band that through over the years he has kept the flame alive, and that now as prophets he announces a brutal return with many revelations!
Conexion Rock Radio: Jeff thanks for the time you give us in this special interview for Conexion Rock Radio and especially the headbangers that follow us in Latin America and other continents worldwide. A great honor to have you here and welcome!! Jeff Becerra: Johonny! The pleasure is all mine Brother. Thank you for reaching out.
CR: Start the interview with great news for Possessed fans: the band is back, and it comes to reclaim its place in the metal world-wide sonic map. Firstly, we know that the band is part of the great family of artists for Nuclear Blast Records, can you share how was the contact between the band and the label? JB: Yes, for sure it feels excellent being back touring and creating new material. And for sure, Nuclear Blast is a great label and allows us the artist freedoms that are necessary for a band like Possessed. Originally, the idea was to simply write and create some brand-new songs to play while out on the road/touring. We have been back together and touring since 2007 and while the old material is great and fun to tour, as artists we needed more. We ended up putting together a new demo as this is part of our process and so we can each have recordings of new songs to practice with before setting off on tour. Since the demo came out so well, we decided to shop it around and see if any record companies were interested. Right away we received several offers from various labels. Of course, in the end Nuclear Blast offer was above and beyond the rest. And since Nuclear Blast is the apex predator of metal labels, we decided to seek contract. Blast has been extremely understanding and a great experience to work with. Like a 2nd family really.
CR: Many believe that this is a moment of justice for the band that for some they considered it already forgotten or literally ... dead, what I would like to know is that it happened in the years that the band had a contract with Combat Records, only recorded two albums: Seven Churches and Beyond The Gates, we have seen in their discography that they have several compilations, bootlegs, live bootleg concerts and some live videos. Anyone would think that the band at this point would have five or seven albums, tell us what situation the band had with Combat in those years? JB: Back in the early 80s we were lucky enough to land a contract with Combat Records. Back then Possessed were the top selling band on Combat. Our first offering, called Seven Churches went Gold. Our second album, called Beyond the Gates was the top selling album that year on Combat. Our last offering was our EP Called, The Eyes of Horror. By the time we hit the studio for Eyes of Horror we were barely even on speaking terms. The Mikes had both grown quite bitter and understandably Larry Lalonde began looking for greener pastures. Larry & I had been very good friends since childhood and had started our musical careers together with our first band called, Marauder (1979) which later we changed our name to, Blizzard. In many important respects Possessed was in large part a continuation of Blizzard. Larry was playing all of the rhythm guitar parts as well as all of his solos on the recordings. More and more Larry was writing and became quite an important part of Possessed. At the same time, the Mikes both grew impatient with life on the road and started being more vocal about, “Wanting to live normal lives”. As you might expect, playing and touring in a Satanic Death Metal band isn’t meant for everybody. And if you want to “be normal” it just doesn’t work. Of course, I still love all the first members as brothers and respect each of their decisions to move on and live normal lives. Of course, for me, I am always wanting to keep on playing and making Possessed into a better band.
After Larry quit Possessed to join Blind Illusion which later morphed into Primus. And the Mikes both quit to live normal lives. I fully intended on putting Possessed back together again. Unfortunately, I was shot (twice) in an armed robbery and the prospects of reforming had to be put indefinitely on hold. So my getting shot twice coupled with the fact that the “Mikes” no longer wanted to play brought our Combat contract to an abrupt ending. It took me 17.5 years just to get my life back in order and get to the point where reforming my band made sense. And every second, every minute & every hour I have thought of bringing Possessed back into the light.
CR: Now let's talk about the new lineup that the band has, we know that the band has been active periodically, especially since 2007 to date. The first to work with you was Emilio Marquez on drums, then joined Daniel Gonzalez on guitars, and Robert Cardenas on bass. What experience has left you in working with this new lineup? JB: Back in 2007 Emilio Marquez and I started working together. Initially, the guys from Sadistic Intent were backing for me and Possessed. This is how I met Emilio who was truly the stand out talent in that band. Emilio and I became inseparable both in music and as friends. While the others back then were wanting to be in Possessed for more selfish reasons (i.e. Promote other bands, fame, recognition) Emilio was very quick to inform me of his loyalty both to me personally and to Possessed as a cause. Emilio was exactly what I had been looking for and became both confidante & ally in the beginnings of our search for the perfect Possessed lineup. We went through a few lineup changes. But this band was put together brick by brick. We held open tryouts and I scheduled several guitarists to come out to the Possessed practice room (Emilio’s garage) and jam out with us.. Most of the people trying out for guitar while very good, were just not even coming close to the extraordinary goals we had in mind. Luckily, I had a friend named Lindsey who I met on Facebook. Lindsey mentioned that her boyfriend (Daniel) was a great guitarist and she told me he would be a perfect fit for Possessed. As a sort of favor to Lindsey we flew Daniel out and from the very first note that Daniel played in Possessed he played our songs better than any other guitarist before. Daniel is fucking amazing. Our first bassist was Tony Campos (Static X, Asesino) But then Tony was taken on as a regular bassist with Soulfly. We then got Robert Cardenas to step in as permanent Possessed bassist. Robert is 100% solid and a professional and a veteran of metal. After a couple of guitarists we finally found Claudeous Creamer. The way that I found Claudeous (aka Scooby) was by sending out a sort of call to arms on my social media & emails. I asked everybody I could reach out, “Who is the best guitarist you know that would fit in Possessed?” And Claudeous’ name came back over 100 times. I called Claudeous up and he said he wanted to come to tryout and he nailed the auditions. In fact, both Claudeous and Daniel are so impressive and complimentary to each other’s styles. A match made in Hell.
CR: A little history for the fans that we know of years and of course for the new ones that are starting to know them, what memories you can share from the first days of Possessed. JB: The first days of Possessed were great. We were tight as friends and bandmates and practiced and played our fucking asses off. Back then, we played for food & beer. We bought an old Chevy van (blue) and that is what we toured in. We took out all the back seats and laid down sleeping bags on the floor and just all piled in and went touring all over the USA. We did one tour in Europe with Voi Vod & Deathrow which was fantastic. And we made 2 full length albums which went cult status. And even though we only stayed together a few short years, I will always remember those times as being truly hardcore and heavy as fuck. We were revolutionaries together and did big things for being so young. We lived, ate, breathed and slept Death Metal and that was our cause.
Before Possessed formed you played bass in a band called Blizzard, by the beginning of 83 you decide to join forces with Mike Torrao, Mike Sus and briefly Brian Montana. According to the story the name of the band was Torrao idea to sound "more evil" in which they were inspired for the name of the band? It would sound like they spent a weekend watching exorcism movies (laughs)
Mike was very cool and had a lot of strong ideas right from the start. Of course, they came to my high school to recruit me on bass/vocals. And the timing was perfect as I was also wanting to go “heavy”. Mike & Mike both had a lot of great ideas back in the day. We all did. We all put in 666%. Possessed became Possessed once I joined and me, Mike & Larry wrote all the old songs/titles for the first 2 albums. But for sure, by the time I hooked up with the Mikes I was already way into Venom, Mercyful Fate, Motorhead, Exodus etc. I was looking to move up and go heavier and the Mikes gave me the perfect platform We all had ideas back in the day. Like I say, these were revolutionary times for music.
CR: We know that bands like Black Sabbath or Motorhead are part of your influences, especially by the singing form of Ozzy and Lemmy. What motivated you to make a change in the voice to sing? JB: Honestly, we couldn’t find a singer, so they asked me to do it. I remember thinking that by becoming both bassist and vocalist I would have more power and worth. And, I had a lot to say and write about and that was the perfect platform. As an artist, it made sense.
CR: Many consider the band as the godparents of Death Metal because of the fact that a demo is called Death Metal. Works like Seven Churches and Beyond The Gates are jewels that are kept alive to this day. What is your opinion about the fans' appreciation of Possessed’ s music? JB: Possessed were the creators of Death Metal. We had to fight to get “Death Metal” recognized as an artform and for a long time Possessed were the only death metal band out there. We took a leap forward from “happy thrash” into the darker artforms of death metal. Of course, our fans & supporters mean everything to me. They are why I do what I do and without them I’m not even sure I would be alive.
We believe that of all the special memories that Possessed has in their existence were of the tours that they did with Slayer and Venom, and then in Europe with Voivod and Deathrow. How has it been for you to see how the band's music started breaking frontiers in several countries?
Well, of course, on top of doing all these listed we had a ton of smaller club shows around the Bay Area and all over the US. We played a lot of fucking shows back in those days and had a lot of stage experience. Seems like every weekend we were playing somewhere. And of course we did the two Slayer tours which were the Show No Mercy/Seven Churches then later the Haunting The Chapel/Beyond The Gates US Tours which were fucking amazing. Slayer were great guys and those fucking tours kicked much ass. Touring Europe with Voivod/Deathrow was also amazing. We had so many really great shows and it was the greatest experience of my young life. I was only 16 whenever we recorded Seven Churches so whenever all that fame came it felt right and good and like my universe was in line. Of course, being that young I was bound to make some mistakes. But in the end, no regrets because at that time I was doing exactly what I wanted to be doing.
CR: An event that has left us scared in the history of the band was your near experience with death, the result was not good as we all know you were confined to a wheelchair product of a shooting. We want to know if who provokes you this is in jail or you think karma will have taken care of it? Please can you share with us how it has been for you especially to face this hard experience? JB: Well, the whole thing about “Karma” is that if real, we are already living where we are meant to be. I don’t hate the two guys that shot me. In fact, I feel bad for them as they didn’t have all the advantages that most of us have in life. I was lucky enough to grow up with a good family that treated me well and taught me the value of life. Not everybody has that in their lives. In truth, life is not fair, not for any of us. Honestly, I hold no ill will or malice towards the two guys that shot me. They were sentenced and last I checked have served their time. I have lost track of them sense. We all have our struggles and as far as I’m concerned I’m only doing the same as anybody else would do in my situation. Which is, trying to live life to the fullest and enjoy what time I have left. For me, that means playing in a Satanic Death Metal band. Ave!
CR: Another big problem for bands and that no doubt Possessed has faced is censorship, we know that there are several ways to make life impossible to bands: bad publicity, religious campaigns, attempts to provoke religious fanatics and even prohibitions to enter some Countries by their lyrics. Tell me they have had some problem of that type and which has been the one that has caused more problems in the history of the band? JB: We have had some crazy fanatics shoot at us before. Although, mostly what I get is young girls trying to “convert” me. Or people trying to tell me about “God’s plan” or whatever. I grew up Catholic and am not for or against any type of religious belief. Although, personally, my religious preferences tend to run towards the darkness.
CR: Let's get away from the bad problems!! Let's talk about good things now! Now with Nuclear Blast are preparing new material, who would say 30 years later and we are witnessing a new chapter for Possessed, what details can you share about it? Are there changes in the sound of the band? Will this work be heavier than the previous two? Is there a possible release date for the release of the new album? JB: Our full-length brand new album is almost an hour long. 10 brand-new songs all which are very solid and I am extremely proud of this next offering. May 10th Revelations Of Oblivion will be released worldwide. Our new album can also be preordered at Nuclear Blast online now.
We worked very hard and put all of our blood, sweat & blackened hearts into this new one. Personally, I think it is some of our very best work yet. We made sure to keep our vibe and the Possessed sound while at the same time moving Possessed into 2019. The new songs sound much less dated. And for sure, I’m really hopefully that people will enjoy it.
CR: Many bands around the world look at Possessed an influence, and the message these bands send to you is: Thank you for existing and making good music that has marked our lives for good! What do you think of that kind of comment? JB: I love hearing this. Music is what our lives are about and whenever any of us hear that there are people out there really enjoying our stuff. Well that just validates what we are doing. Our reason to exist is to make killer music for our fans & supporters and of course our musical peers.
CR: Jeff who will offer us Possessed in the future. Will there be the possibility of being able to see the band on a Latin American upcoming tour? JB: Possessed have always loved touring in Latin America and I will be coming back just as soon as possible. Currently, I have our European Tour “Devils Over Europe 2019” this June which may actually have some LA dates. After that, looking at possible American Tours around Fall. Basically, it’s all about timing & scheduling. For sure, there is no doubt in my mind that Possessed will come back to Latin America just as soon as our schedules allow.
CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read us in this special interview with you? JB: Most of all, I’m hoping that all Latin American Possessed fans will enjoy our brand-new album, Revelations Of Oblivion. This one is for you. Also, I want to thank all of you that have stayed true to Possessed as fans and supporters. And for waiting so long. I’m back and much more coming your way!!
