Power Paladin
The Perfect Balance Of An Adventure If you like bands like Rhapsody of Fire, Freedom Call, Twilight Force, and a bit of Iron Maiden's harmonious guitars, we invite you to enjoy this interesting band that Conexión Rock Radio offers to all of you in our international contacts. Our new stop is in Iceland, precisely in Reykjavík, the place of origin of the band Power Paladin, who in 2022 debut in style with their release With the Magic of Windfyre Steel, which was released at the beginning of January via Atomic Fire Records, and for lovers of Power Metal this album is clearly shaping up to be not only one of the best releases of this year, but also one of the most innovative debuts of this decade. This time we talk with his drummer Einar Karl Júlíusson, and he shares with us the first impressions of how fans and critics have given a warm welcome to this work that has managed to place itself worthily at the top of the international charts, and of how how these young musicians achieved this important project that would last 2 years to see the light in the midst of a pandemic. The history of Power Paladin dates back to 2017 when they were simply called Paladin, but they decided to change their name to Power Paladin in 2020. Currently the band is made up of Kristleifur Þorsteinsson- Bass, Einar Karl Júlíusson- Drums, Bjarni Þór Jóhannsson and Ingi Þórisson- Guitars, Bjarni Egill Ögmundsson- Keyboards, and Atli Guðlaugsson- Vocals. Make yourselves comfortable, and get to know first-hand the plans that Power Paladin has in 2022, because what they have for the world is The Perfect Balance Of An Adventure Conexion Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Kalli, we send you our best wishes from Honduras that everything is well back home and it is an honor to share with our readers in Latin America and the rest of the world the important news that Power Paladin has in 2022! Welcome!
Einar Júlíusson: Good afternoon from Iceland Johonny, the weather is cool here and thanks for your interest in approaching us, and he sent a greeting to all the people in Latin America who will read this interview. CR: Currently as things are there in Reykjavík, are there concerts or are there still restrictions to be able to do concerts? EJ: In recent weeks we have had more restrictions and the concerts can only reach a certain number of people for the capacity. So at times there are no concerts and we are seeing what happens later. We are very eager to be able to play and do what we like. We know that even the health system is in an emergency due to Covid and other variants, but we hope to see the light at the end of the tunnel soon to show what we have for the fans. CR: That's right Einar, it's a matter of waiting for everything to return to normal over there, we know that little by little several countries are lifting restrictions and that's a good sign, but let's talk about good news, the band debuts with its album With the Magic of Windfyre Steel, which came out at the beginning of January via Atomic Fire Records, by the way, congratulations, we know why the album has been well received by both fans and critics, especially in the European Charts.
How do you feel about taking this first step in your career? EJ: I really didn't expect such a good and overwhelming reaction towards the album, I remember when we started this whole process in 2018 we had big breaks to be able to complete the whole process at the end of 2020 and the album was ready to be released in February 2021 , but because of everything that has happened to this day we had to wait to decide the right moment to release this work. I had contemplated recording a solo album to a certain extent but the best thing was to focus only on the band, so we decided to release it on Spotify and know the reactions that people had about the material, which is why the people of Atomic Fire Records noticed us, and the rest is history. CR: Was it easy or difficult for the band to record the album while they were stuck at home, especially releasing it in an unusual situation like the one we have now?
EJ: At first it was difficult due to the fact that we had to finish the album as I told you before, everything started in 2018 and went quite slowly until 2020, although the positive thing about all this is that we all learned how to handle editing programs and audio recording in our homes, which is why we saved a lot to go to a professional studio and invest an album in one of those places, everything was easy because the album was conceived at home and now you know the reason why it took us so long time to do it. CR: On this occasion you had the assistance of Haukur Hannes in the mix and Frank de Jong in the mastering, what impressions do you have of the work they contributed so that Wyndfire came to light? EJ: Hakur is our sound engineer when we go on tour, and we considered him to be the right person for that job, Frank is a friend of Hakur and lives in the Netherlands, he suggested that the album be mastered there, and we blindly trusted Hakur, in the end what we sent as a mixed recording to Frank he sent us a true masterpiece home, so we all left happy with the final result. CR: We have surprises on the album, and one of them is the participation of Óskar Rúnarsson from the band Blood Feud, who appears as a guest on Righteous Fury and Dark Crystal. How did you come into contact with Óskar for this collaboration?
EJ: Óskar is a great friend of ours, and we have had the opportunity to share several concerts with both Blood Feud and Nexion, which is his side project. When we started working on the promotion of the album, especially with the videos, we invited him to participate in Kraven The Hunter in the role of the creature, and we had a great time filming, so we are grateful to him for his collaboration. CR: Here we come across strong points of this album, and that for the fans will already be classics that will be playing on their tours like Kraven The Hunter, Evermore, Ride the Distant Storm, Creatures Of The Night, Righteous Fury and There Can Be Only One.
From the cover, which is a work by James Child, will people think at first glance if we have several stories, or is it something conceptual? EJ: At first we wanted something epic taking into account the context that the band has in its sound, we also left the door open so that people can have an interpretation of what we have in our hands, although there are direct references to the cover in the track Evermore which is an exact description that James Child made in his art. He has worked with us on the cover design for the Kraven The Hunter single, and from the moment he submitted several ideas we said this is the person we are looking for. CR: Here people will say: watch out for Dragonforce, Powerglove, Twilight Force and Powerwolf... here we have a new contender on the map!
For those who listened to the band for the first time, how did the idea of forming Power Paladin come about and what is the inspiration that you have in your proposal? Books? Films? EJ: We have a lot of influence in bands that we have followed during our youth and that have inspired us to follow in their footsteps such as Rhapsody, Symphony X, Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, Iron Maiden of course Helloween, and all those bands are influence for the current one and for the next generations that will follow in their footsteps, that is something sure that Power Metal will be in force for a while. CR: As we mentioned at the beginning, the album comes out through Atomic Fire Records, how was the contact between you and the label to start this interesting teamwork? EJ: It all started with a friend of ours called Vincent who proposed to try his luck with some stamps to see if there was a reaction and so we could get closer. Years ago when we participated in the battle of Wacken he had talked to a friend, and that person was Markus Wosgien who currently runs Atomic Fire and previously worked with Nuclear Blast Records. He contacted us to propose something and we accepted, and now we are part of his catalog of artists. CR: Despite having vaccines and that the restrictions in some countries have eased, fear is still present in people who want to go to a concert or a tour for fear of being reinfected by the new variants. What do you think of this current situation with the pandemic Einar?
EJ: I understand people's fear, but I think the best thing is to wait for all this to get better and finally return to our lives in a normal way. The main idea of a post-pandemic situation is that the public seeks to have fun and have a good time, and for the bands the objective is to resume tours, play in Europe, the United States, Latin America in general, and as I said at the beginning, we have to wait for the panorama to improve later. CR: Taking advantage of this situation Einar, has the band had the opportunity to participate in online festivals? Or do Paladins prefer a real face-to-face experience with people?
EJ: We played an online event in March 2021, and it was broadcast through Facebook, I mean, we are open to participate in this kind of thing, and that the people who organize these activities with the bands are also open to it, but there is always a factor that something can go wrong and it is quite scary that something can go wrong while we are playing, and the last experiences have gone too well, so people if they miss the live can see them in delayed without any problem . As a band we always need the energy of the people when you play live shows, although lately everything is done by streaming a very small number of people are accepted in a place, 50 to be exact, and everyone was there sitting and enjoying of the event, although many people would like to go massively to these places, but the restrictions for now prevent that. CR: Currently with the 3 videos published, do you have plans to reinforce more the promotion of the album? EJ: Currently we have released 'Dark Crystal' as a lyric video. We are open to making new ideas to make another video just like we experienced with Kraven The Hunter, it's just a matter of gathering ideas and selecting the track to work on the concept. CR: Already with the album circulating in the streets, do you plan to do dates in various parts of Iceland or neighboring European countries, or will you focus more on local promotion?
EJ: For now we don't have anything concrete, although we would like to be able to present the album in a venue and invite many people to enjoy it, so it could be early May that we can do this activity, and for now it's time to be patient and see what happens later, and hope if we can get several dates in Europe, but that would depend on the current circumstances if everything is fixed or we would have to adapt to constant changes of dates. CR: At the end of this interview Einar, what message do you want to send to the people who have read and enjoyed this special report on Conexión Rock Radio, and thank you for the time you gave us on this occasion, and we hope to speak with you again in the future EJ: Thank you very much Johnny for inviting me, we hope that people in Latin America like the album, and you can get it on CD and Vinyl from Atomic Fire's online store, you will surely love it, and we hope to be able to play some concerts there and that everyone loves it. can enjoy, because all the fans and all the bands around the world love music. A greeting and a hug to all from Iceland. Special thanks to Markus Wosgien of Atomic Fire Records for his help in making this interview possible, and to Einar Júlíusson for spending time at home.
