RITUAL DICATES
Given In To Despair, via Artoffact Records
DICATES RITUAL
An Obsolete Instinct For the Extinction A new band returns to action after many years of absence, and debuts through the front door with an album that seeks to be received by many with open arms, making it one of the most anticipated releases in 2020. Ladies and gentlemen ... we present to you in this report to RITUAL DICTATES. A band that was born in 2014 from the hand of Justin Hagberg- Voice and Guitars, and Ash Pearson- Drums, (both previously played in 3 Inches Of Blood) and that we will discuss the details that are presented with the release of their debut called Give In To Despair, which goes on sale on April 3 via Artoffact Records. Next, we share with you this interesting interview: Conexion Rock Radio: Justin, greetings from Honduras, Central America, an honor to have you here for our audience in this region who wants to know about the next news that your band has, in this case Ritual Dictates this year, welcome! Justin Hagberg: First of all thank you for your interest in approaching the band! We have recently released the album on digital platforms, and due to this emergency that is happening in it with the COVID-19 we do not know for sure if the CDs arrived on time, hopefully this does not affect fans who previously made reservations, and it only remains to hope that somehow or other it will be resolved. CR: Start my report with you in knowing what are the expectations that Ritual Dictates has with the reléase of their debut called Given In To Despair, via Artoffact Records
How do you feel about starting a new story with this band? JH: Let me tell you, it's the most exciting part of starting a new band, it's that you don't know where you're going, basically we have everything for a completely fresh project, it's a feeling that at the end of a whole process you are very surprised, and I think That is one of the things that I'm really excited about. This represents one more step in life as a musician, and especially in having participated with 3 Inches Of Blood, during the time I was with them it has been a great process, especially recording and writing songs. Now with this new project I am looking to practically start things from scratch. CR: Many bands usually make concept albums or separate stories in their works. What details can we share about this debut? JH: This album comes with a lot of attitude towards the Death Metal sound, if there is not a solid concept, here the composition and production process to shape this work took a few years, so there are some changes of direction musical, and this is what will catch your attention once you hear it and appreciate the final product. Some challenging songs came out in the studio, where the old school Death Metal sound predominates, but there are also some rock and roll elements, and that was the result of writing several songs in a long time. Over the years we know that we were influenced by music, and it is definitely a bit obvious when you listen to the album, it has moments when there are complex structures, you would be impressed to say "wow, that is the most difficult thing I can playing in my life ”, so in the end we are very happy with the whole process for the album, and I love the variety that we include in all the tracks, for now we are going to enjoy what we have with this debut album, and new ones will come ideas for a new work later. CR: Personal comments on the singles: I must tell you that with Extinct it is pure art to see the version (censored and uncensored of course), with Terror of Time it is a track that many would like at first listen, with Given to Despair , the lyric video version is very good and fun at the same time watching a frog, a dog and a turkey playing the guitar in karaoke mode, but in the end when you say: Time to bend to no hope… prepare for the plague, and I thought: wait ... yes they did this before the emergency, this is prophetic!
What reactions do you have from the fans with the first singles? JH: About Given To Despair it was one of the newest songs we had written for that album, it was one of the last songs we wrote, and when we recorded it we thought: "Let's try this and see if it works", you know, especially with the classic rock elements in there, like acoustic guitars, and then there are clean vocals. There are several songs that we talk about lyrical content especially with the phrase prepare for the plague. It seemed ironic but impeccable at the same time that names such as Terror of Time, Given to Despair or Extinction appeared, it may be that at the time or first impression it sounds somewhat silly for the titles that directly or indirectly relate you to this global emergency, but thinking about it with cold head is the closest thing we have to reality. I think these three songs are really good, they are a perfect cover letter for the band, and each song in the whole album has different influences, from Death Metal with melodic atmospheres, there are passages of Thrash Metal, and moments where you will hear clean voices. So, these three songs have different points, but keeping a collective form, we always seek to explore this in our sound and this is just the beginning, we have 11 songs on the album, and it will be very interesting to know different reactions once you hear it. CR: What experiences do you have having worked with Jesse Gander on mixing and Jason Corbett on mastering throughout this process?
JH: Jason is a very good friend of mine, I've known him for a couple of years, and it was a wise decision to get him involved in the process, he did a phenomenal job of mastering the album. With Jesse we have worked together on various projects in the past. He is a person of great reference in Vancouver, it is always a good experience to work with him, he has produced works for Danko Jones, and we have a close relationship with everyone who participated in the recording process, for us it was a delightful experience. CR: An interesting point in this debut is the guests: Danko Jones, Shawn Haché and Shane Clark (formerly from Bison and 3 Inches of Blood). What comments do you have to share the talent of these musicians on the album? JH: We are all mutual friends, and when we were recording in the studio, it's nice to have new projects and hang out in the process, and that's how it all happened. Shane is one of my best friends and, obviously, and it seems that we relived those days in 3 Inches Of Blood when we were recording, having the time and the advantages for it, we processed the acoustic parts, same chemistry happened with Shawn, he was very direct and I practice when I contribute the parts during the recording sessions. And Danko Jones has provided his voice in a song, which incidentally was one of the first I wrote years ago. He has a very dominant presence and is a great musician and singer.
We got in touch with him and invited him to record the vocals for the album, and sure enough, everything worked and played the parts exactly as we were seeing in our brains, so we were all excited, not only did we have everything planned, but the changes They were amazing in the shots that we decided to stay there, it was fantastic! CR: We know that the Ritual story is not new, you and Ash both played 3 years ago with 3 Inches Of Blood, and are currently playing in Revocation.
What motivated you to make Dictates a full-time band despite many projects you currently have like Dead Quiet, Worse, Allfather and Klandestīn, for example? JH: Well I want to tell you that Ritual started out as a project that was just for fun, and basically a side project to 3 Inches of Blood, and it was incredibly busy touring the whole time. I never had time for anything, for that reason we decided to put the band on hold because our priority in those days was focused on 3 inches, we all didn't have free hours, Ash was back with Revocation, and the matter was time Complete, everything put us in a waiting situation. When Ash told me that he had more time, we decided to reactivate Ritual, and so we would start everything from the beginning with the ideas we had previously, but giving them a different form than our first album would be. CR: Many would think you would follow the 3-inch line, but you decided to take a more extreme path musically speaking, what makes Ritual special in these circumstances? Ritual Dictates is my idea, and I do not intend to remove anything from what I contributed in 3 Inches, because I loved every moment I spent with them, they were incredible years and I am very proud of what I did in that band and the songs with the which contribution, but the best thing was to start from scratch, and this new band was made by me and Ash, and we decided the pattern of how this band should sound, so 3 Inches Of Blood provided many things to do this project. As I told you I like 3 Inches, and I am very passionate about this band, but I am not a founder, they already had their formula, and they already had everything established in those years. I am very passionate about this project in music, and for that reason we started from scratch without continuing with other bands or things like that, that's why we are forging our own way from now on. CR: Currently how are you a piece of two looking to complement the lineup with new musicians or will you have collaborators for your live shows?
JH: Definitely, we are going to have a band with permanent members and we will play live shows. I love two-piece bands. I just know I don't think we can really play the music that just the two of us do. I mean there is only one Geddy Lee in the world who can play three instruments at once, (laughs) so we will definitely need additional hands for the band to be complete. CR: How was the contact between the band and Artoffact Records to make this project a reality? JH: Jason Corbett was really helpful in introducing our music to Artoffact executives. When we had everything ready in the studio, he sent some songs to the label, likewise we had a Public Relations Officer who was in charge of sending them the material. That was an almost immediate reaction, they called us and we are happy to be part of the label. CR: What is your vision with the band, many will think that Ritual is a project that will not last long with an album, or are you looking to record more in the future?
JH: I tell you that I already have ideas for the next album, I am immersed in it, and I want to say that we are not going to jump out of bed in the truck and travel around the country, relentlessly you know that we want to play as many shows as possible , but everything implies in matter of times and projects that do not affect the plans of the band. We have plans to make now and we will not wait another seven years for us to return. You know, many people think that we will only release this album and it ends everything, and we would not like to go back in time like what happened in 2014, so we are just waiting for the time to go on tours and write new ideas for what would be a new album in the future. I love writing music, for me it is always a challenge and that is something that I am passionate about, so I plan to write and with Ash we are going to make everything work independently. CR: Once this global emergency has passed due to the coronavirus, will the band seek to go as far as possible with their sound? We had a schedule ready for the tour, obviously it was canceled, but thanks to those who follow us on the Internet it helps us keep everyone updated with our music, and we will try to let them know that we have been discussing various plans in the next days like for example a live broadcast, and we want people to know more about us and our music, so we will do whatever it takes. CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and thank you for answering our questions for Conexión Rock Radio. JH: We are really grateful for all the support we have received so far, and we want to thank everyone for it, those who appreciate and share our music with their friends, and also spread it. We are really excited about that and again very grateful to everyone! CR: Justin, thanks for your time, our online radio has open doors to support you, as well as our friends in Looters who gave us the opportunity to speak with you this day, and we hope in the future to continue the story of a interesting band like Ritual Dictates! JH: Thank you very much for the interview, it was great to talk to you, and we hope that this moment of conversation will come again, and we send you from Ritual Dictates an invitation to follow us on our social networks, and a greeting for your readers in Latin America and the rest of the world!
