RIVERS OF NIHIL
RIVERS OF NIHIL
The Perfect Vision Of A Work A perfect play on words that fairly define the band that appears in this special report for Conexion Rock Radio, and what these talented musicians bring up is a mere declaration of intentions to keep their sound current, and at the same time experience new things. for his fans in different parts of the world. This time our contact is to the United States, precisely in Pennsylvania, and we had the opportunity to speak with Brody Uttley, Guitarist of the band Rivers Of Nihil, who in 2021 return to action with their new record production called The Work, which came out released on September 24th through Metal Blade Records, and this is the fourth album in his career. Brody shares with all of you how this new album was formed in the midst of the global pandemic caused by Covid 19, and that far from waiting for things to improve in recent months, it was best to enter the studio to shape the ideas that later embodied in The Work. Rivers Of Nihil was formed in 2009, and currently consists of Adam Biggs- Bass and Vocals, Brody Uttley- Guitars and Keyboards, Jake Dieffenbach- Vocals, Jon Topore- Guitars, and Jared Klein- Drums and Vocals. We will know about the concept and themes that the band offers us with their new album, the favorable evolution they have had internationally with their acclaimed Where Owls Know My Name, the guests, the reception that fans and critics have had towards The Work, of the current events that the band has with tours reactivated in some cities of the United States and the future plans that Rivers in an invitation to be part of The Perfect Vision Of A Work Conexion Rock Radio: Brody, greetings from Honduras! Thank you for the opportunity to chat with you and we send you from here we send you our good wishes that everyone is well at home, and it is an honor to speak with you and share with our readers about the next news that a great band like Rivers Of Nihil have for your fans this year, welcome! Brody Uttley: Thank you Johonny for your interest in having me here and greetings to our fans and readers of your media both in your country and in the rest of Latin America. CR: I start this interview by congratulating the band on the release of their recent album called The Work that came out on September 24th through Metal Blade Records.
By the way, album number four in its history. What reactions have you had from fans and critics once you heard the album on both digital and physical platforms? (CD and LP) BU: We are very excited about the first reactions to this new album, since one thing is certain, this will attract new fans and those who have followed us for years to our concerts, we are very much looking forward to when the restrictions are lifted to be able to offer to them big gigs on the tour that we are planning for the next few months. CR: How have you seen the evolution you have had from that acclaimed Where Owls Know My Name to this new album? We know that Owls is the album with which many have met the band
BU: It has been interesting, this new step as musicians and as people. It's been three years since we released Where Owls Know My Name and a lot has probably changed in the last five years, we've gotten better at songwriting and lyrics, and probably Owls was our best effort back then. So, with the passage of time we are all a little older and have a greater perspective on the world, and for that reason this new album is a reflection of the changes that we have experienced since then, both as individuals and collectively. And in general terms as musicians the change has been more than favorable until today. CR: As you know since 2020, the world has been confined due to the Covid 19 pandemic, and that this crisis has caused everything to literally stop.
No tours ... no live shows How do you guys feel about releasing an album in these strange circumstances? BU: In spite of all the bad that has happened in recent months, we are back on the road and sharing the stage with our friends from Black Dahlia Murder, and the truth is a very pleasant and normal feeling for everyone to go back to touring again, because of the situation in which we live if it is a strange moment, but let's hope that people receive this album with open arms, and that they see it as part of their soundtrack, so they can't even leave the house to play it all volume and forget about all these bad problems for a long time. With some luck and time, we will all meet again at a concert. CR: For many, they see two elements in this new album: the strength and the progression of its sound. There are relaxing and turbulent moments that last for more than an hour. Tracks like Dreaming Black Clockwork, Focus, Clean, The Void from Which No Sound Escapes, Wait and More? They are the highlights that people want to hear at their concerts. What does the band offer us with The Work? BU: In my case, I do most of the composition of the music. I think this record is open to interpretation in many ways, and we really wanted to create an album like that. He stood his ground on his own and we were looking to give him a shape while we were in this confinement, and from the moment we entered the studio we were looking for something that could go into people with a sound with a lot of density, and I think we achieved that at the end of the process. And it's good to know that people have started to like it once they listen to the entire album on physical and platform. CR: Curiously at the end of the album the fourth part of Terrestria appears.
Will we have the conclusion of this quadrology here or will there be more sequels in the future? BU: I can't say for sure (laughs), but I want to say that the Terrestria Series was an intentional thing made for all these releases that we have made so far, it's like comparing the four seasons, for example, for spring, summer, fall and Winter, so I guess this is probably the end, or maybe not, it's up to time to determine what comes next. CR: For The Work you have special guests: Zach Strouse on Saxophone, Grant McFarland on Cello and James Dorton on Voice.
What impressions does the band have of the contributions they made in the studio? BU: Zach has participated in Where Owls Know My Name, and we felt it was only fair that he appeared with us again. In the studio Zach played his Sax lines for The Work in a completely different way than the previous album. And all of us present gave him the freedom to leave his personal stamp on the songs, so everything was natural, it was not premeditated. As for James Dorton, he's the frontman for Black Crown Initiate, he's obviously an old friend of ours and a very killer vocalist and he was in town for a wedding so we invited him to the studio and he records and sings for us in Terrestria and on Episode, and then we have Grant on the cello and he's one of the engineers for the album at the same time. He participated in The Void from Which No Sound Escapes, and we have been very comfortable with the guests that we have brought in this time, and each one shone in each of the songs that appeared as guests. CR: This is your fourth album with Metal Blade Records, even though your first two EPs were released independently.
What comments do you have of being part of one of the most important labels in the world? BU: I have to tell you that working with them is great as they trust what we do. They do not interfere and believe in us. We know that your entire staff works to make a lot of high-quality products, so if they ask us for something, we just do it. One of the points that we liked about this new experience is that we worked together for the artistic design of the album in all its formats and particularly of the special editions, and we have all said that this has worked very well, and as a band we feel very honored to be part of their rooster where they have very recognized artists from the world scene. CR: What is your point of view of how Progressive Death Metal in the last 10 years has gained traction around the world and that RON is part of that movement, how do you feel about being part of a new generation of bands that still hold the flag high? BU: It's great to be a part of this. And we're just doing what we want to do with our music. For many who have known us for many years, they know that we are part of something great, of a movement that has expanded very well, we have had very positive comments about our evolution and the point where we have reached. We have added many interesting elements to our music, we call this a progression within the Rivers Of Nihil sound, and like many bands that experience extreme metal and progressive do and that many will notice them and can appreciate their talents. CR: Have you had any comments from fans if the band would release as a sort of Owls sequel to The Work? From your point of view, do you consider that this new album has been favorable or not for RON's sound?
BU: We really didn't want to do Owls part II, to be frank with everyone Where The Owls Know My Name was a unique moment that we lived as a band, and we considered that that would be possibly our best version as people and as musicians. We could have done something different at that time perhaps, but we consider that we are a band that does not seek to repeat things or get stuck in a specific sound. Our thing is to keep moving forward, and we seek to make albums that sound different from each other, and that is why many people expected at some point that we would release as a kind of anthology or trilogy with these releases, and our progression is merely receptive both in lyrics. As in music, possibly for some it may even seem repetitive, but we seek to try new things and I look at Owls as a cycle that we gloriously close, and I have nothing against the fans but they look at Owls for our best work, and I agree. I agree with them that good and fun things appear, but as I mentioned before we seek to do different things for them. CR: As you mentioned at the beginning, the band is currently on tour.
Do you have plans to present it in streaming later? BU: Until now, with the restrictions and permits, people have known how to behave in a good way and enjoy our shows, and we hope that people attend in masse without distancing, fears and other things that have left us almost two years without activities. Regarding streaming, we had planned to do something if the situation continued, and offer something for people who live in other cities or continents if for some reason they could not attend our dates in person. We have several things scheduled, so based on the panorama that develops with the pandemic, we will see if streaming could help in those cases. CR: Brody, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for taking the time to do this special report on Conexion Rock Radio. BU: First of all, thanks to you Johonny for your interest in talking about this new album, we also thank our fans in Latin America for supporting us for many years, and we hope that The Work will be liked by everyone in their homes, take care of yourselves and We hope to see you soon on a tour of your countries. CR: Brody, thanks for your time! All the best to you and your bandmates with this new album, and we also thank our friends at Metal Blade for their help in making this conversation possible with you. We hope to speak again to talk about another interesting chapter in the history of Rivers Of Nihil. Have a perfect day at home and take care of yourself! BU: Same for you and thanks again!!
