Controversia, Devoción y Exaltación al Paganismo en Pro Xristou Conexión Rock Radio en sus entrevistas internacionales les ofrece una interesante conversación con una banda que en los últimos años su nombre ha estado atado a la controversia, censura y critica de miles de antagonistas que no desean verlos tocar en sus países, pero al mismo tiempo respetada por una infinita legión de fans que el mencionar su nombre es sinónimo de una carrera hecha con esfuerzo y dedicación. De esa manera establecemos contacto hasta Grecia para hablar con Sakis Tolis, voz, guitarra y mente maestra detrás de la banda Rotting Christ quienes nos ofrecen en 2024 su nueva producción discográfica la cual lleva por nombre Pro Xristou, misma que vio la luz el 24 de mayo a través de Season Of Mist, y que marca precisamente el 35 aniversario de la banda, cuyos planes se destacan en una gira a nivel mundial celebrando este importante momento con sus fans. La banda griega, liderada por los hermanos Sakis y Themis Tolis, ha estado a la vanguardia del black metal desde su formación en 1987. Con un historial de discos que desafían las convenciones y una reputación de presentaciones en vivo electrizantes, Rotting Christ continúa sorprendiendo a sus seguidores, y con Pro Xristou, no es la excepción, agregando a ello la participación de Kostas Heliotis en el bajo y coros, y de Kostis Foukarakis en guitarra y coros. Sakis comparte en esta entrevista sobre la inspiración y el proceso detrás de Pro Xristou desde su título hasta su contenido lírico, del impacto que ha derivado a la larga un considerable debate en la comunidad metalera acerca de su evolución la cual ha sido criticada por algunos pero ovacionada por otros, dejando claro su postura que la banda esta buscando la forma final en cuanto a sonido y calidad se refiere, y que ahora en un regreso post pandemia buscan llegar con su música a los rincones más lejanos del mundo. Ponte cómodo, y se parte de una épica travesía en el crepúsculo del paganismo y de cómo estos griegos hacen una lección de historia teniendo al cristianismo como un relato hecho poesía, y que la poesía a los puritanos oídos de muchos es una controversia mezclada con devoción y exaltación al paganismo al inicio de una nueva era en este Pro Xristou que con el tiempo se ganara su lugar en la historia de una banda llamada Rotting Christ… Conexión Rock Radio: Buenos días desde Honduras Sakis, gracias por aceptar nuestra invitación, ya esta es nuestra 2da en conversar contigo y es un honor hacer eco y compartir con la gente en todo el mundo sobre las novedades que tiene Rotting Christ en este año, ¡Bienvenido nuevamente a tu casa mi querido amigo!
Sakis Tolis: Encantado de verte después de muchos años Johonny, un saludo a todos nuestros fans en Latinoamérica y en especial en Honduras donde nunca hemos tocado ahí, pero esperamos poder hacer eso muy pronto. 
CR: Esperamos poderlos tener por acá y ser parte de una comunión y ser parte de su historia. Iniciamos nuestra entrevista con buenas noticias, la banda lanzo el pasado 24 de mayo Pro Xristou, disco número catorce en su discografía y que lanzado via Season Of Mist.
Felicidades por un grandioso álbum que es candidato para lo mejor del año. Que impresiones haz tenido de los críticos y de los fans haciendo una ovación a este nuevo álbum Sakis ST: Así es, este es nuestro disco número 14, a mi opinión este álbum quizás sea de los más melódicos, aunque podrían notar menor calidad en él. Aquí nos inspiramos en el paganismo antiguo, en especial de su historia y conocimiento. Si me lo preguntan este es uno de nuestros mejores discos a pesar de las quejas de la gente y de los comentarios que hemos estado viendo en las redes. Es mi visión de como deseo ver a la banda en este tiempo con este nuevo material, después de 35 años he preferido que esa parte de mi vida mejore dignamente, y como banda hemos logrado ese objetivo. Rotting Christ vive una evolución y en cada álbum presentamos una cara diferente musicalmente hablando, con este nuevo álbum a pesar de no ser el mejor podría destacar la calidad en producción como un aspecto notable y Pro Xristou ganara su lugar en el tiempo. Nosotros no queremos cambiar más el mundo, lo que queremos es experimentar más dentro de nuestra música que por cierto ya tenemos un sonido muy bien establecido dentro de nuestra evolución como artistas, razón por la cual decidimos trabajar en nuevas ideas y lanzar este nuevo disco. 
CR: Como tú sabes la pandemia detuvo todo, y aprovechaste en lanzar tu primer disco como solista.
¿Como te sientes tú y Themis en volver con un material nuevo después de cinco años de silencio? ST: Así es fueron cinco largos años, pero eso fue una decisión, quiero decir, no queríamos lanzar nada durante la pandemia ya que como todos saben no se podían hacer giras ni material que pudiera apoyar esos momentos que el mundo vivía en ese entonces. Así que la pandemia fue un periodo muy deprimente para mí. Lejos de que mi motivación cayera lo mejor era hacer nueva música, eso marco un progreso para mí, ya que de esa inspiración salió mi primer disco como solista, y lo veo como un hijo que fue concebido en una mala época. Así que entre la depresión y el encierro he hecho mucha música, la cual decidí lanzarla de manera independiente. Para los que no tienen dinero les invito a que puedan descargar desde mis canales este material que está disponible de manera gratuita. CR: Hablemos de Pro Xristou que significa Antes de Cristo, sabemos que la banda en sus letras ha atacado las religiones, pero También la banda nos regala una lección épica de historia al final del paganismo, muchos consideran este disco como un soundtack cinemático. The Apostate, Like Father, Like Son Quorthon estaria orgulloso con esta canción, The Farewell y Pretty World, Pretty Dies son ejemplos de grandes canciones.
Pero, ¿Que nos ofrece Rotting en este nuevo disco? ST: Mucha gente podría relacionar el disco como una colección de poemas cantados y recitados, como todos saben venimos de un país con una rica historia. Veo en las Iglesias y pienso que están construidas sobre monumentos antiguos. Me di cuenta y despertó esa curiosidad de instigar que había debajo. Con el paso del tiempo me enteré que con la llegada del cristianismo se perdió mucho conocimiento antiguo, y miré en ello como una perfecta influencia en tomar la guitarra y componer algo sobre eso. Considero que esto es como un tipo de resistencia. Con el paso de los años no soy de las personas que busca crear problemas con búsquedas incendiarias sobre expresar mis pensamientos de una manera magistral. Solo puedo decir que el cristianismo fue el culpable de la destrucción de muchas cosas históricas en todo el mundo. No solo Europa, También en América vivieron ese problema de como destruyeron conocimientos y tradiciones del pasado. Considere que al final eso fue una Buena idea, una Buena influencia para tomar mi guitarra para dar forma a estas canciones. 
CR: Es muy interesante tu punto de vista de cómo la banda ha atacado a las religiones de una manera llamémosla elegante, los tiempos han cambiado y la gente ha madurado sobre esos tiempos en los cuales muchos hemos vivido en todos estos años.
¿Antes de todo, por favor corrígeme si estoy equivocado son treinta y siete o cuarenta que la banda está celebrando actualmente? ¿Con este disco junto con un set especial tienen contemplado hacer una celebración con los fans de todo el mundo? ST: Actualmente estamos celebrando nuestro 35 aniversario, el punto aquí es organizar una gira mundial y deseamos que Honduras aparezca por primera vez en nuestro camino. Estamos trabajando con varios agentes y poder tocar en la mayor cantidad de países posibles. En el pasado hemos tocado por varios países, pero no masivamente en Centroamérica, pero tenemos algunos lugares como México, Sudamérica, Oceanía e inclusive Estados Unidos y Europa donde queremos visitar nuevas ciudades. Estamos haciendo nuestro mejor esfuerzo para poder presentarnos no solo con el nuevo disco, sino que con el material clásico de la banda, porque nosotros apreciamos a los fans de varias partes del mundo que nos sigan en la Carretera, pero los centroamericanos en particular han deseado tener en sus países un show de Rotting Christ ahi, y por eso se está luchando para eso pueda ser una realidad. Nosotros no cobramos por Meet and Greet, queremos pasar un buen tiempo con la gente que se tomen fotos, que disfruten de nuestras canciones y que podamos estrechar las manos en persona, es ahí donde decimos que el espíritu underground esta fuerte, y creo que bandas como nosotros nos hacen más famosos en ese entorno, cosa que vemos ahí como un punto interesante al estar en giras. CR: Actualmente en estas giras cuentan con la ayuda de Kostas Heliotis y Kostis Foukarakis, existe la posibilidad de que ellos sean ya parte de la banda ¿o consideras que tú y Themis sean la configuración que Rotting Christ debe de tener ahora? ST: Ambos nos apoyan, como todos saben cada quien aporta un porcentaje en cuanto a ejecución musical se refiere. O sea, en vivo cada quien sirve en un 25% en su habilidad, entonces al ser 4 Rotting Christ es una banda completa. El hecho de que sea el compositor principal sea un factor que ha determinado el peso y la historia de la banda desde el primer día, Rotting Christ desde el primer minuto de acción en el escenario hacen un poco de locuras o verán cuatro chicos tontos haciendo música y dando lo mejor de nosotros, su esfuerzo en esta nueva encarnación de la banda es apreciada, y el estar en directo hace que nuestra energía sea más directa para que la gente disfrute en los conciertos. 
CR: Cual es tu punto de vista de que los críticos digan que el disco está copiando ideas anteriores de Rituals y de The Herectics al punto de decir que Rotting hizo este disco en piloto automático.
Debo de decirte que este álbum refleja la forma final de la banda. ¿Buscas romper algo establecido en la música o ir mas allá de la evolución como compositor Sakis? ST: De joven crecí escuchando bandas como Motorhead, Iron Maiden, y soy fan de todas esas bandas que tocan y son fieles a su propio estilo. Eso es muy normal que la gente diga que son parecidas unas con otras. Así que desde el momento que forme una banda y decidí a escribir música busque en establecer mi propio sonido sin necesidad de copiar cosas del pasado. No olvidemos que la banda ha cambiado al menos cuatro veces su dirección musical en toda su Carrera. No somos la banda que habitualmente toca lo mismo, pero para este nuevo disco ha sido un paso experimental más en lo que hemos hecho en estos más de 30 años de carrera. Así que no necesitas experimentar, solamente grabar discos con canciones que sean muy buenas y que tengan varios elementos en su propuesta, sin dejar por fuera el aspecto de escritura y composición. En mi vida he compuesto más de doscientas canciones y tú te preguntas ¿cómo puedes esperar que algo no suene igual? En mi opinión he visto tantas cosas en mi vida que no tienen personalidad musical por decirlo así. Todos por igual hemos probado cosas, y en mi caso he decidido escribir solamente Buenos albumes y no experimentar más. Todo está bien dentro de lo establecido hasta ahora con el sonido de Rotting Christ. CR: Con varios discos que son clásicos, giras en todo el mundo, cambios en alineación, pero lo más importante aquí es que ustedes continúan brindando buena música en estos 35 años
¿Cuál es el secreto de la longevidad de una gran banda como Rotting Christ desde la perspectiva de Sakis Tolis? SK: La verdad no tengo ningún secreto, solamente me expreso. Soy una persona que busca cosas nuevas en esta vida. Siempre vivo en una constante evolución, todo lo que oyes lo captas y haces algo solamente para ti. Así que no hay ningún plan establecido. Tampoco soy de la opinión de hacer un álbum comercial solo por el hecho de vender más. No haría eso por meras convicciones, todo lo que se ha hecho en todos estos años es el reflejo que Rotting Christ ha hecho en su vida, la música es su alma, y eso es lo que conmueve y toca a la gente. Para mí eso es lo más importante en todo. Con la música busco hacer algo honesto, amo a la gente y ellos aman lo que escribe, en esto existe un vínculo en común y es que compartimos esa pasión por la música. El ver a varias personas felices es una ganancia, eso me da fuerzas para seguir Adelante, y eso es lo que busco expresar del legado de la banda a través de los años. 
CR: With the face of angel… In flirt with sin… His voice in eternity… Non Serviam Este álbum cumple treinta en 2024, precisamente en Octubre ¿Hay planes de revisitarlo en vivo? ST: Ahora que lo mencionas estamos trabajando en esa idea. La verdad es que no sabemos si tendremos suficiente tiempo por el aspecto de hacer muchos ensayos, y a veces el tiempo es un factor que se pone en contra de nosotros. Al punto de verlo como muy estricto, por otro lado, témenos planes para tocar en varios países próximamente y la idea es poder rescatar algunas canciones del Non Serviam. Al recordarlo lo veo como un álbum lleno de riffs, lleno de atmosfera y es a la vez muy espontaneo, lo cual es muy importante para nosotros. La historia lo ha valorado como un gran clásico, pero posiblemente junto con el nuevo disco podamos ofrecer la opción de un set clásico y ofrecer una celebración especial para Serviam. 
CR: Tocara esperar si hay oportunidad de que el álbum se pueda celebrar en Latinoamérica.
Cuáles son tus pensamientos acerca de la inteligencia artificial, como tú sabes este tipo de recurso muchas bandas la usan para crear portadas, letras, e inclusive música. ¿Es Bueno o malo para la industria de que los artistas dependan de esto? Comentarios… ST: Digamos que esto es evolución. Así va el mundo con la tecnología actual, pero la verdad no soy partidario de este tipo de cosas, me imagino escribir usando IA para mí eso sería un desastre. Por otro lado, el uso de estas cosas haría que las bandas no fueran rentables para la industria, no venderían discos por el hecho que los artistas no usaran el cerebro, lo cual es importante en la composición de ideas en este caso canciones, y para los músicos el usar el cerebro es un recurso básico para sobrevivir. Por lo tanto, Johonny la creación artística en cualquier expresión es de importancia para que la humanidad siga adelante, si tenemos todo preparado seremos unos jodidos hombres que no dependeremos de una máquina para que haga lo necesario con solo presionar un botón, al final seriamos inútiles si dependiéramos de ello. No existiría la creatividad, y todo ello nos llevaría a un desastre. Pero eso dependerá de cómo el futuro ponga las cosas en su lugar. Con esto no estoy en oposición a que las nuevas generaciones usen este tipo de cosas, pero nosotros nos mantendremos a la vieja usanza grabando a nuestra manera nuestra música. 
CR: En toda tu carrera la banda ha trabajado con la discográfica Season Of Mist
Cuáles son tus pensamientos sobre esta interesante relación de amistad entre la banda y el sello SK: Mas que amistad veo en esto como una hermandad. Ellos han sido parte importante de nuestra carrera al editar muchos discos con ellos, y eso también marco una parte significativa del cambio. Soy de las personas que buscan quedarse con los buenos amigos, de la gente que colabora. Todo esto se parece como el tener una familia y vivir con tus hijos, con la discográfica todo ha encajado muy bien y seguiremos trabajando con ellos, porque no deseo cambiar las cosas en la vida de una banda, y si tienes un sello no lo cambies. 
CR: Sakis, al final de esta entrevista, que mensaje deseas enviar a la gente que ha disfrutado de este reporte, y gracias por el tiempo que nos haz concedido allá en Grecia, solamente te deseamos a ti y al resto de la banda lo mejor con Pro Xristou ya en las calles.
ST: Antes de todo gracias por tu apoyo en esta entrevista, me alegra saber que el disco haya sido de tu agrado, invito a los fans de todo el mundo a que apoyen Pro Xristou comprándolo en sus diferentes formatos, y que valoren, disfruten y apoyen a la banda. Sakis Tolis: Nice to see you after many years Johonny, greetings to all our fans in Latin America and especially in Honduras where we have never played there, but we hope to be able to do that very soon. 
CR: We hope to be able to have you here and be part of a communion and be part of your history. We begin our interview with good news, the band released Pro Xristou on May 24, album number fourteen in their discography and released via Season Of Mist.
Congratulations on a great album that is a candidate for the best of the year. What impressions have you had of the critics and fans giving this new album a standing ovation, Sakis? ST: That's right, this is our 14th album, in my opinion this album may be one of the most melodic, although you might notice less quality in it. Here we are inspired by ancient paganism, especially its history and knowledge. If you ask me, this is one of our best albums despite people's complaints and the comments we have been seeing on the networks. It is my vision of how I want to see the band at this time with this new material, after 35 years I have preferred that that part of my life improve with dignity, and as a band we have achieved that goal. Rotting Christ is going through an evolution and in each album, we present a different side musically speaking, with this new album, despite not being the best, the production quality could be highlighted as a notable aspect and Pro Xristou will earn its place in time. We don't want to change the world anymore, what we want is to experiment more within our music, which by the way we already have a very well-established sound within our evolution as artists, which is why we decided to work on new ideas and release this new album. 
CR: As you know, the pandemic stopped everything, and you took advantage of it to release your first album as a solo artist.
How do you and Themis feel about returning with new material after five years of silence? ST: That's right, it was five long years, but that was a decision, I mean, we didn't want to release anything during the pandemic since, as everyone knows, you couldn't do tours or material that could support those moments that the world was experiencing at that time. So the pandemic was a very depressing period for me. Far from my motivation falling, the best thing was to make new music, that marked progress for me, since from that inspiration came my first album as a soloist, and I see it as a son who was conceived in a bad time. So between depression and confinement I have made a lot of music, which I decided to release independently. For those who do not have money, I invite you to download this material that is available for free from my channels. CR: Let's talk about Pro Xristou which means Before Christ, we know that the band has attacked religions in its lyrics, but the band also gives us an epic history lesson at the end of paganism, many consider this album as a cinematic soundtack. The Apostate, Like Father, Like Son Quorthon would be proud with this song, The Farewell and Pretty World, Pretty Dies are examples of greatest songs.
But, what does Rotting offer us on this new album? ST: Many people could relate the album as a collection of poems sung and recited, as everyone knows we come from a country with a rich history. I look at Churches and think that they are built on ancient monuments. I realized and awakened that instigating curiosity underneath. As time went by I learned that with the arrival of Christianity a lot of ancient knowledge was lost, and I looked at that as a perfect influence on picking up the guitar and composing something about it. I consider this to be a type of resistance. As the years go by, I am not one of those people who seeks to create problems with incendiary searches to express my thoughts in a masterful way. I can only say that Christianity was to blame for the destruction of many historical things around the world. Not only Europe, but also in America they experienced this problem of how they destroyed knowledge and traditions of the past. Consider that in the end that was a good idea, a good influence to take my guitar to shape these songs. 
CR: Your point of view of how the band has attacked religions in a let's call it elegant way is very interesting, times have changed and people have matured about those times in which many of us have lived in all these years.
First of all, please correct me if I'm wrong. Is it thirty-seven or forty that the band is currently celebrating? With this album along with a special set, are you planning to celebrate with fans from all over the world? ST: We are currently celebrating our 35th anniversary, the point here is to organize a world tour and we wish that Honduras appears for the first time on our path. We are working with several agents and to be able to play in as many countries as possible. In the past we have played in several countries, but not massively in Central America, but we have some places like Mexico, South America, Oceania and even the United States and Europe where we want to visit new cities. We are doing our best to be able to present ourselves not only with the new album, but also with the band's classic material, because we appreciate fans from various parts of the world who follow us on the road, but Central Americans in particular have wanted to have a Rotting Christ show there in their countries, and that is why they are fighting to make it a reality. We do not charge for Meet and Greet, we want to have a good time with people who take photos, enjoy our songs and we can shake hands in person, that is where we say that the underground spirit is strong, and I believe that bands How we become more famous in that environment, which we see as an interesting point when being on tour. CR: Currently on these tours you have the help of Kostas Heliotis and Kostis Foukarakis, there is the possibility that they are already part of the band, or do you consider that you and Themis are the configuration that Rotting Christ should have now? ST: They both support us, as everyone knows, each person contributes a percentage in terms of musical performance. That is, live each person serves 25% of their ability, so being 4 Rotting Christ it is a complete band. The fact that he is the main composer is a factor that has determined the weight and history of the band since day one, Rotting Christ from the first minute of action on stage they do a little crazy or you will see four dumb guys making music and giving our best, their effort in this new incarnation of the band is appreciated, and being live makes our energy more direct so that people enjoy the concerts. 
CR: What is your point of view that critics say that the album is copying previous ideas from Rituals and The Herectics to the point of saying that Rotting made this album on autopilot.
I must tell you that this album reflects the final form of the band. Are you looking to break something established in music or go beyond Sakis' evolution as a composer? ST: When I was young, I grew up listening to bands like Motorhead, Iron Maiden, and I'm a fan of all those bands that play and are true to their own style. That's very normal for people to say that they are similar to each other. So from the moment I formed a band and decided to write music I looked to establish my own sound without needing to copy things from the past. Let's not forget that the band has changed its musical direction at least four times in its entire career. We are not the band that usually plays the same thing, but for this new album it has been one more experimental step in what we have done in these more than 30 years of career. So you don't need to experiment, just record albums with songs that are very good and have several elements in their proposal, without leaving out the writing and composition aspect. In my life I have composed more than two hundred songs and you wonder how can you expect something to not sound the same? In my opinion I have seen so many things in my life that have no musical personality so to speak. We have all tried things equally, and in my case I have decided to only write good albums and not experiment anymore. Everything is well within what has been established so far with the Rotting Christ sound. CR: With several albums that are classics, tours around the world, changes in their lineup, but the most important thing here is that you continue to provide good music in these 35 years
What is the secret to the longevity of a great band like Rotting Christ from Sakis Tolis' perspective? SK: The truth is I don't have any secrets; I just express myself. I am a person who looks for new things in this life. I always live in constant evolution, everything you hear you capture and do something just for yourself. So there is no set plan. I'm also not of the opinion of making a commercial album just for the sake of selling more. I wouldn't do that out of mere convictions, everything that has been done in all these years is the reflection that Rotting Christ has made in his life, music is his soul, and that is what moves and touches people. For me that is the most important thing in everything. With music I seek to do something honest, I love people and they love what they write, in this there is a common bond and that is that we share that passion for music. Seeing several people happy is a gain, that gives me strength to continue moving forward, and that is what I seek to express about the band's legacy over the years. 
CR: With the face of angel… In flirt with sin… His voice in eternity… Non Serviam This album turns thirty in 2024, precisely in October Are there plans to revisit it live? ST: Now that you mention it, we are working on that idea. The truth is that we don't know if we will have enough time because of the many rehearsals, and sometimes time is a factor that works against us. To the point of seeing it as very strict, on the other hand, we have plans to play in several countries soon and the idea is to be able to rescue some songs from Non Serviam. Looking back on it I see it as an album full of riffs, full of atmosphere and it is at the same time very spontaneous, which is very important for us. History has valued it as a great classic, but possibly together with the new album we can offer the option of a classic set and offer a special celebration for Serviam. 
CR: We will have to wait if there is a chance for the album to be celebrated in Latin America.
What are your thoughts about artificial intelligence? As you know, many bands use this type of resource to create covers, lyrics, and even music. Is it good or bad for the industry that artists depend on this? Comments… ST: Let's say this is evolution. This is how the world goes with current technology, but the truth is I'm not a fan of this type of thing, I imagine writing using AI would be a disaster for me. On the other hand, the use of these things would make the bands unprofitable for the industry, they would not sell records due to the fact that the artists did not use their brain, which is important in the composition of ideas in this case songs, and for For musicians, using their brain is a basic resource to survive. Therefore, Johonny, artistic creation in any expression is important for humanity to move forward, if we have everything prepared we will be fucking men who will not depend on a machine to do what is necessary with the push of a button, in the end we would be useless if we depended on it. There would be no creativity, and all of this would lead to disaster. But that will depend on how the future puts things in place. With this I am not opposed to new generations using this type of things, but we will stick to the old style recording our music in our own way. 
CR: Throughout your career the band has worked with Season Of Mist.
What are your thoughts on this interesting friendship between the band and the label? SK: More than friendship I see this as a brotherhood. They have been an important part of our career by releasing many albums with them, and that also marked a significant part of the change. I am one of the people who seeks to stay with good friends, of people who collaborate. All this seems like having a family and living with your children, with the record company everything has fit together very well and we will continue working with them, because I do not want to change things in the life of a band, and if you have a label do not change it. 
CR: Sakis, at the end of this interview, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this report, and thank you for the time you have given us there in Greece, we only wish you and the rest of the band the best with Pro Xristou now on the streets. ST: First of all, thank you for your support in this interview, I am glad to know that you liked the album, I invite fans from all over the world to support Pro Xristou by buying it in its different formats, and to value, enjoy and support the band. We hope that for the tour we will do later we can include Honduras on our route and celebrate our 35th anniversary celebration with all of you.
