SATAN

SATAN
Ascendancy… from Hell… to Earth Old school British Metal returns to action in the international interviews of Conexión Rock Radio, and we recommend that you listen to their new material, which in addition to being a recommendation for a future classic, the band that appears in this report returns with energy renewed… ready to open a breach from hell to earth. On our tour we arrived in Newcastle and talked with Steve Ramsey, Guitar and one of the founders of the band SATAN, who will return in 2022 with their new album called Earth Infernal, by the way, the sixth in their discography, and which was released on last April 1st through Metal Blade Records. Steve shares with us the process that the band has gone through in recent months with the production of this new album, the concept that these talented musicians offer us, Satan being a band that has maintained a very stable formation through the years. , and that currently, in addition to Ramsey on Guitars, is complemented by Russ Tippins- Guitars, Graeme English- Bass, Sean Taylor- Drums, and Brian Ross- Vocals. Sit back and enjoy this conversation with Steve about Satan's plans for the future in this unusual situation, where these pioneers of British metal live a moment of ascendancy in their history. Conexion Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Steve, an honor to speak with you again, hoping that all is well at home, and here we are ready for a pleasant interview and share with our readers the important news that Satan has in 2022, welcome! Steve Ramsey: Hi Johonny, nice to talk to you again after so many years, thanks for the well wishes, and we hope things are going well over there for everyone. CR: Thanks Steve, how have things been for the band in recent months, have you been able to perform in some places there in London or are the restrictions still strict to be able to do concerts? SR: All the tour plans we had since 2020 were cancelled, sadly we wanted to play in the United States in April of that year and we had several presentations there. When we were preparing to leave, the only thing we had pending was to process our Visas, for that reason we had to do an interview with the people from the Consulate. Once everything was ready, unfortunately, the pandemic caught up with us and we all had to lock ourselves up at home, seeing what was happening in the world, we decided to postpone everything until further notice, and in December 2021 we went back to play a few shows here in London. It has been a very difficult situation for us not being able to tour for a long time. CR: It will be a matter of waiting for everything to return to normal Steve, but let's talk about good news, the band released Earth Infernal on April 1, their new album and which comes out through Metal Blade Records, what reactions have they had from of critics and fans towards this album that is undoubtedly a candidate to be one of the best releases of 2022?
SR: Thank you very much for your words, I'm glad to know that you liked the album. In these last days in our rounds of interviews we have received very good ovations towards this release. The good thing about all this pandemic and lockdown is that we make the most of all this time to write and compose something new. Despite the weeks and months for this process, in the end we are all proud of Earth Infernal and seeing all these comments from around the world are giving us the signal that we did something very well. CR: That's right, we believe that many people will like the album, both old fans and new ones, by the way, the band experienced another important moment in its career such as Cruel Magic in 2018, how have you felt in getting a good album like Infernal in this atypical situation where we don't have concerts or tours
SR: It was definitely a shame not to finish the tour portion of Cruel Magic and then go into the studio. Now that we are seeing that many shows are being canceled around the world, it makes us sit down to think whether or not this is really the right time to make plans. We still have to reschedule the dates in the United States since the emergency began when the visas were processed, so they were worthless and we must do the paperwork again and see if it is possible to do something with the promoters, although they have stated that they are concerned about everything that has happened since the beginning of 2020 until now. We are doing everything possible to recover some dates that for the reasons that we all know some have been postponed and others have been cancelled. The panorama is not yet clear to us, if it were not for October of this year, it is most possible that everything will be for the beginning of 2023. CR: You're absolutely right on that point Steve, these have been difficult times for you, and speaking of all these situations regarding the production and recording process of the new album, has it been easy or complicated not to see each other and rehearse to improve ideas? SR: From the beginning it was difficult because we were experiencing a situation of canceling tours and trying to rescue as many dates as possible for ourselves. The best thing in that sense, far from feeling sad, angry or frustrated, was directing all that energy in the studio. The plan to record the new album was contemplated for October 2020 and we all contributed ideas by exchanging files during this confinement. Although we had the studio nearby, Dave Curle, who is our engineer with whom we have worked years ago, and is the person who has mixed the last 3 albums in his studio, fell ill, and that caused us a delay to be able to meet and be able to record some songs. Between September and October I contracted Covid, resulting in the process stopping while I fully recovered, so in this case, Johonny, my experience recording this new album was good, but very stressful (laughs). CR: Dave gave a very special touch to the production that has been one of the strong points of the release, as well as the contribution of Dario Mollo in the studio.
Here we have some very notable tracks like Ascendancy, Burning Portrait, Mercury's Shadow, Luciferic, The Blood Ran Deep and the epic Earth We Bequeath. How do you feel as a band in conquering new audiences around the world with your sound? SR: We are very happy that you send us good comments like this, in the same way that young fans know us through this album and from there they inquire about our history, and we must also thank the fans around the world who have given us support in recent years, and especially in these moments that have been a challenge for everyone but that we achieved, based on a collective effort, an album that is one of the most remarkable points in our present history. CR: Currently with the promotion of the new album you released two videos: Burning Portrait and The Blood Ran Deep. Do you have plans to launch any other? I ask you this question because all the songs on the album have the merit that another audiovisual section can be made SR: Not currently. Maybe later because selecting another song for a new video is a difficult decision, as you mentioned, all songs are valid for it, but to say that we are looking for a song for a next video and that we can coincide all at once is the point to treat CR: The cover is done by the great Eliran Kantor, who has been working with the band since the 2013 album Life Sentence. How do you feel to have Eliran's participation again for Infernal Earth?
SR: He does a great job with the covers, he knows the kind of ideas we put into him. As you mentioned, he has been with us since 2013 and I remember that when we told him about the name of the Atom by Atom album from 2015, he perfectly handled the concept of the judge as a reference to the previous album, and we have received his contribution to the band very well. CR: With Infernal this is your second album with Metal Blade Records.
What are your impressions of Satan being part of an important label like this? SR: We have been through great labels in all these years, some of them recognized worldwide, and we have loved working with different people through our discography. Metal Blade has been one of those places that has been able to believe in what we have done and we consider as a band that this has been a movement that has ensured the course of our history to this day. CR: Speaking of history, what is your point of view on this journey that you and your companions have started, which by the way Satan is one of the bands that have remained stable over the years in terms of members, and of course you have also done other projects like, Blind Fury, Pariah and Skyclad SR: It's just been a fantastic life experience, Johnny. I'm very fortunate to be able to see Satan reformed in its early days and having Brian's support made the things we had to face as a band in the industry challenging. We were overcoming them, we had to understand and understand how that worked in terms of business in order to finish what was once incomplete, and thanks to that to this day we continue to stand firm as a band. CR: What do you think of this confinement that has caused stress and on the other hand the fear of people with this pandemic and its variants
SR: Recently in Germany we played in a venue that was at 50% capacity, and we know that many people, although they want to see the bands at a full house, have those restrictions in front, we know about the fear of re-infection, but the best thing is that now we have the vaccines and the body can recognize the signs when you are dealing with the disease, I have already had that experience before in the study, especially with the flu that can cause discomfort in your health, realistically the pandemic and its variants will be circulating around the world but over the years and with medical treatments all this will be reduced to a flu that can be controlled. CR: There are several events that the band will celebrate soon, for example, in 2023 they will be 40 years old, in the same way Court in the Act will be 30
Do you have plans to share these celebrations with fans anytime soon? SR: It's very possible that we can do some special shows celebrating playing Court from start to finish, or add a special set for the occasion and make this all a memorable moment by capturing the magic of the 80's, and do it in Newcastle, with something hopefully we could have guests or former members who want to participate in the occasion, but for that we would have to sit down and discuss how we could make this possible, and also if we can re-release the album as an anniversary edition, it will be a time of talks and negotiations as that we would have for the 40th anniversary of the band. CR: Steve, with Infernal on the streets, what are the plans now for Satan? Tours or focus more on promotion? SR: We plan to tour Europe at the end of October, and we hope that all the dates go by without problems, and we are crossing our fingers so that the shows are guaranteed and that people can see us without problems and without fear. CR: Hopefully everything is for the good of the band Steve, at the end of this report, what is the message you want to send to Satan fans around the world and to those who read this interview, thank you for your time as well there at home
SR: Thank you very much for the interview, Johonny, and we invite the fans to enjoy the new album and the new songs, and if everything were possible, we hope to see each other very soon at some shows, thank you for your support of Satan and sent you a hug from Newcastle. Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey of the Metal Blade Records Press and Promotion Team for making this interview possible and to Steve Ramsey for his time on this opportunity.
