SIENA ROOT
Coincidence and Fate: A Revelation Seeking to Conquer the World Lovers of the classic rock school of the 60's and 70's, Conexión Rock Radio offers an interesting proposal for all of you, and that the band that appears in this space offers their fans around the globe a new chapter in their a story that seeks to keep the flame alive in those who have followed them since their early days, and for those who know their sound for the first time, it is a letter of invitation to join in this revelation that has known how to unite the paths of many people. through music. From Stockholm, Sweden we present Siena Root, a band that has been active on both the national and international scene since 1997, and that in 2023 presents us with their new record release called Revelation, which came out at the beginning of February through from Atomic Fire Records, and that critics have been able to welcome this new album with open arms, to the point of considering this new work as an absolute winner in their discography. We talked with Sam Riffer, Bassist and one of the Founders of the band, who shares with all of you everything related to the production process of this new effort, which was conceived during the pandemic, the concept that the band offers to its fans. , an interesting retrospective in their history, of the lineup changes they have had over the years and of the plans they seek to achieve in the coming months of 2023 with several tours around the world. Siena Root, in addition to Riffer, are currently made up of Love Forsberg- Drums, Zubaida Solid- Voice and Organ, and Johan Borgström- Guitars. Get comfortable, play music from this band on the playlist, take out your sandwiches, and enjoy a pleasant conversation where we are presented with A Revelation That Seeks To Conquer The World Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Sam, we send you our best wishes that you are well at home, and it is an honor to be able to conduct this interview with our readers in Latin America and the rest of the world where we will share about the next news that Siena Root has this year, welcome!
Sam Riffer: Good afternoon from Stockholm Johonny, nice to know that someone from far away is interested in us, and here ready to answer your questions in this interview, thank you very much for your interest in the band. CR: Thanks to you in advance for the time Sam, I start my conversation with you to know how do you feel as a band to return to action after almost 3 years of this situation that took us by surprise at the beginning of 2020? SR: It really feels good to get back on the road and perform again in various places, we were very lucky during the pandemic since on the one hand we survived those hard days even though we met musicians who are our friends who unfortunately couldn't play In our case, we were able to make some presentations sporadically there and there, we were able to play 10 shows a year, not to mention the obstacles that arose due to the strong restrictions that occurred in those days, but as the months went by, seeing that things were back to normal, the concerts were once again part of the entertainment agenda, and currently people have responded to the call without being afraid or distancing themselves, for us this in the end was very good for the band and for the fans. CR: The band presents its eighth album called Revelation via Atomic Fire Records, which was released on February 2, here I must say that classic never goes out of style!
What reactions have you had from critics and fans towards this album that is a candidate to be one of the favorite albums for the first months of 2023? SR: We are grateful to everyone, fans and journalists who have given due importance to this album and we have had a great response with the advances weeks ago and now that Revelation is in physical and digital circulation we can only say that we are happy with this great result. CR: We know that in 2020 you released Secret Of Our Time, and the pandemic caused the band to suspend touring while they continued promoting that album.
Many think that with this new album the band will do a double presentation of both the previous work and this new one. Do you have any plans to combine the best songs from the last two albums in a setlist for the tours that will be announced later? SR: That's a sure thing that will happen at our next shows. About the previous release, as you mentioned, Secret Of Our Time came out in March 2020, we had plans to tour on those dates, but we lived through the situation that the world experienced at that time. We had to cancel everything and wait for all this to pass to see what decisions we would make later. Now with the new album we have been planning carefully where we would go, if the conditions were right. We were always in contact with our agents and promoters to find out the routes through which we were going to play, fortunately we have a strong schedule in the coming weeks and the most interesting thing here is that no date has been cancelled. One of the first points where we are going to present ourselves is in Denmark, since on the one hand it is a close country, at first we were very afraid that some date would be canceled at the last minute or that they would call us on the road and tell us that the show could not be performed due to immigration issues, but so far nothing negative has happened. For a presentation and with eight released albums we must make a balanced setlist taking out the best songs from those releases, so that is not easy, or at least rescue one song from each album and focus more on the last two, so it will be safe. that we will play most of the songs from Revelation and Secret, and we hope that people will enjoy the surprises that we have prepared for the concerts. CR: Along with Revelation, the band offered the premiere of Wheels Of Revelation. What details can you share with us? At first glance, people may think it's a documentary.
SR: In itself it is a combination of a road movie with the story of how the album has been recorded because it is precisely about leaving the city (by mere reference to the track Leaving The City) to be able to work in an environment surrounded by nature. That's how we left Stockholm to be able to complete the whole process in a country area. The development of the album was handled from two different recording studios, and all of that was documented on video, so we will present this as a film with a psychedelic focus that tells how the album was conceived between the road and the studio, that's why we call it The Wheels Of Revelation. CR: For Revelation, did the band produce the album or did they look for a producer to make this project a reality? SR: We have decided to handle the production, mixing and mastering ourselves, and we have done this since the fourth album, since we have our own studio and that makes things easier for us, but we are not closing the door so that an external producer can work with us. It will be interesting to see the vision he offers for us and how the band can be guided by that idea, good things might come out of it, but everything would be completely unpredictable (laughs). CR: It´s very interesting to know that band can broaden the vision with other people who can contribute ideas for future releases Sam. Here we come across outstanding songs such as No Peace, Coincidence and Fate, Winter Solstice, Little Burden, Madhukauns in which we can listen to the execution of a Sitar, and Professional Procastrinator
The instruments have a delicious balance in the songs and Zubaida's voice makes each song addictive, if the band released this album in the 70s they would put Led Zeppelin in trouble, what Siena Root offers on this new album, are there stories or is conceptual? SR: There are several things that make this album special and at the same time different from the previous ones. When we started to write the ideas for the songs, the concept was going to be aimed at being a completely acoustic work, for example I can mention Winter Solstice, A Little Burden and Leaving The City. There the acoustic presence is very noticeable for those who listen to those songs. During the process we tried doing everything with acoustic instruments, but then we changed some things to add the electric parts and they ended up being heavy songs that we all liked from the moment they took shape in the studio. From then on the real challenge was to balance those elements in the mix and mastering and be able to make a good album, in the end we managed to make an electric and acoustic album at the same time, and we were all very happy to hear the final mix. , and this is what we have and present to people. Regarding the concept, it is an invitation for people to leave the city to explore an adventure through nature through our music, and that is what we expose to the public with Revelation. CR: With Revelation the band begins a working relationship with Atomic Fire Records, what impressions do you have of the treatment that this record label has in this part of the history of Siena Root? SR: We are very happy to work with the people of Atomic Fire, they have been doing a great job, and we have maintained a fluid communication, and I think they understand the vision of the band, because one of the difficult things within the recording industry it is that the labels understand the bands in the way they express themselves and how they seek to guide their sound. In this case it´s a joint effort because we seek to reach as many people as possible through our proposal, and for us that is an advantage, despite the fact that in other labels, whether small or independent, the band literally takes care of everything. they seek to limit creative and artistic freedom, and that is very difficult for a band to work in that way. Although there are labels that work with a lot of enthusiasm and are committed to spreading music all over the world, but now being part of Atomic Fire things are very positive, since they let us do what we want and do not interfere in your creative process. It´s a good combination that we have achieved now, and we are very excited to continue with them in the coming years. CR: We know that this is the second album with Zubaida and Johan. How do you and Love feel to witness the good times the band has had in these 26 years, and despite the constant changes in their line-up, many consider this new version of the band to be the perfect one in their history?
SR: I agree with people's comments, we are very happy with the result of having Zubaida and Johan with us, about the changes through the years, I can tell you that since the recording of the first album the main idea was to keep that first stable lineup, but suddenly the vocalist no longer wanted to continue with us, and from then on the process of evolution was natural with arrivals and departures of members who at times approached us again to collaborate on several tours, but We considered that this was not good for us, we wanted to focus on Jazz, and we looked to the band for its creative core to be intact but at the same time counting on the participation of guests both in the studio and live who could contribute to the songs that we were launching at that time and we decided to work in that modality for a while, but in the end that didn't work, and we saw that in the rock scene there were many people who I was extremely conservative and they wanted to know who was going to sing with us that night, who was playing this or that, we definitely couldn't function on a commercial level, but we had enough musical inspiration to be able to work with other musicians so we could move forward on different time lines. Looking back at a life project turning 25-26 years old would make anyone throw in the towel or look for other options, but with the new members they have brought new energy and creativity to the band. In my way of seeing things, the changes have been great, and on a commercial level the band has taken things to a higher level, and as every artist we live ups and downs throughout our career, I think we're going through a bad streak there, but now we are all in harmony and both creatively and musically we have a perfect balance, and that has been fantastic. CR: Speaking of live records, the band released Root Jam in 2011, have you already contemplated with this new album recording material on these next tours, and offering a live recording later for the fans?
SR: It's very interesting that you mention that, because in the first place Root Jam has been out of print in physical format for a long time, so the good news is that it will soon be reissued again, and we think that with the new album logically the possible name It may be Root Jam II, but we are following up on various ideas once the tours start and we can take our recording equipment to the places where we are going to play. Possibly it will be a double live album, we are in conversation about that, but Johnny is sure of one thing, that would be the next step, and we consider that it could happen later. CR: What's next for Siena Root with Revelation on the streets, do you have dates announced, or will you focus on promoting the album more? SR: We will do both things in these next few weeks, we have focused a lot on promotion, recently we did the album launch party and the film screening, as well as organizing time in various places for people to buy the material and to we can sign him, and then we'll start our tour with several shows in Sweden, and in a few weeks we'll go to Germany and perform on various TV channels, which will be a perfect opportunity to record our songs, and then between April and May we'll be playing to various countries throughout Europe, and possibly we will appear at some festivals in Summer. So we will have a lot of work for now, but the idea is to stay active both in promotion and on tour. CR: At the end of this interview Sam, what message do you want to send to all the Siena Root fans around the world, who have followed you for years, and who now come together to appreciate their story, and I want to thank you in the same way. for the time you have given us for the readers of Conexión Rock Radio
SR: Thank you very much Johonny for this interview, and to the people who have been supporting us since we started the band, we promise that we will do the best for our fans all over the world, and we would like to reach where you are especially in North and Latin America, if you know of any local promoter who is interested in us, please contact us through our networks, it will be a great honor to cross the Atlantic and be able to play for all of you, since we have never been there, so that we hope soon to be able to visit your countries and have a great time with everyone gathered there in a concert. Thanks to Barbara Francone of Atomic Fire Records for helping make this interview possible, and to Sam Riff for spending time on this conversation.
