SONATA ARTICA
A Fun Acoustic Revisitation If you are a lover of daring experiments with interesting results, you are cordially invited to enjoy this interview by Conexión Rock Radio, and especially for Sonata Arctica fans, who in 2022 return to action with interesting projects, mainly from their new release. which was a project that they had pending to carry out years ago, and that now they can see it already carried out and fulfilled. Our guest on this occasion, Tony Kakko, tells us about the great reception that this curious work called Acoustic Adventures - Volume One has had, which was released last January 21 through Atomic Fire Records where they do a tour of their nearly 25-year career, taking several of their classics to the acoustic field, and at the same time rescuing songs that they rarely play live. Tony shares everything related to this project that was conceived in the midst of a pandemic, and that far from being a difficult process, it was a fun experience to experience new sounds, thus leaving the expectation that people can enjoy these songs on the tour that is coming soon. will start in several Latin American countries. Sonata Arctica, in addition to Kakko on vocals, is complemented by Tommy Portimo- Drums, Henrik Klingenberg- Keyboards, Elias Viljanen- Guitars, and Pasi Kauppinen- Bass. In this interview you will learn various curiosities that surround this new album, the plans for its 25th anniversary, the reasons for making this interesting section and the future plans that these pioneers of Power Metal have for all their fans around the world in this One Fun Acoustic Revisitation. Conexión Rock Radio: Tony, greetings from Honduras, a pleasure talking to you on this day and I wish the band a successful 2022, that everyone is well back home, and an honor to do this report to share with our readers the news that has Sonata Arctica in this year, welcome!
Tony Kakko: Hello Johonny, good afternoon from Finland, I also extend my good wishes to our fans in Central and Latin America, and here I am ready to chat with you! CR: How have things been in recent months there in Finland, Tony, have things improved or are the restrictions still active to hold concerts in small venues and venues? TK: Here the situation escalated it's much worse than it's been so far we have restrictions and maybe probably more from now on but anyway like before Christmas we had less than 1,000 infected per day and now we're about ten thousand or even more, the maximum amount according to what I have read is that it is around 15,000, which is a lot, we are a nation of 5.5 million people, so that is a lot, and it is a situation where there are many recidivism Now with the new variants. Sadly, with all this, the panorama has worsened in several continents around the world, luckily I have not gotten sick and I have been constantly working here at home. I have all my vaccinations up to date, and I am lucky because without them I think I would be dead, I remember when I was a child we were given polio vaccines, and now against this pandemic I am happy, and we have faith that the situation is gradually improving because those are good signs that we can pick up our stuff again. Since all this started for us and literally involved us not having contact with anyone and being locked up at home for so long it has affected us on a personal level, but on the other hand it was a perfect opportunity to work on various things here at home writing songs, despite being a long time it was very good for the band, I have been making arrangements and taking up ideas of songs from Sonata that need to be revisited, so that has been normal between a process of touring and resting at home, although all are going on vacation, except for me (laughs) because of being the composer you know, and this lockdown far from being a difficult situation was the perfect excuse to have a more extended rest at home, and now we are preparing to celebrate the 25 years of the band, and it's a special occasion where we're all ready, and we're very anxious to get back out there and for things to get better, and I don't know if this is really good for me on bed Having to be locked up at home, anyway, it's time to pick things up and I feel lucky like the rest of the band to prepare and live this special experience. CR: 2022 is a marked year for Sonata, new album, new changes and new label. You released Acoustic Adventures - Volume One at the end of January and it marks the beginning of a team work with the Atomic Fire Records label, how have you felt with the tremendous reception that fans and critics have given to this new album Tony?
TK: We were overwhelmed by the great reception that we have received through social networks, and nobody is exempt from making an acoustic album and people reacting in a surprised way that it is not a metal album (laughs), there is always someone who's going to do that sort of thing, but if you do, most people have loved what we've got here. With the acoustic format we look at things from another perspective, and this has brought new parameters for metal in general, and it is very sure that many metalheads will look at Sonata Arctica, and especially with these new songs many reasons that can generate that interest. towards them and this has been a very normal reaction, since many of us fell in love with metal and there have been many bands that are a reference in the world and that have experimented with joining metal with acoustic, there are many Sonata ballads where we put those two universes, so have bands like Iron Maiden or Metallica to mention a few examples. And many people have said that we have molded more of that style in our music. On the one hand, they comment that our music has a lighter side, and on the other hand, that it is very accessible that it reaches many more people. CR: As the title says this is the first of several releases that Sonata will do acoustically, for lifelong fans they will see this album as a way to give a fresher touch to many of their classic songs, on the other hand For new fans, this album will represent an introduction to their history.
What has motivated you to revisit all this material and give it a fresher and more elegant approach? TK: Well, the whole idea started 8 years ago, Mary Lou was our first experimentation in that format in the early 2000s, and I thought it might be cool to be able to do work like that, and we had a lot of stuff that we've stored in these last 20 years (laughs) so that took a long time to really happen for the process of this new album. In 2014 we participated in several festivals and we decided to take the acoustic format to those places precisely because they are summer festivals in Finland. Seeing that all this would work very well, we decided to take the idea to the management of the label so that they would approve everything and be able to record a new album so that they would give us the green light in the end. In this way, the project began in 2019, and the process would last approximately a year and a half, seeing the large amount of material that we have, we thought that the best thing was to do the project in two parts, the first that came to light in January, and Volume II will be out in November, since due to the pandemic we couldn't tour since the beginning of 2020, and it was best to wait for things to improve. But it is a joy for all that the material has already been released, we will have the opportunity to organize a new list of songs for the tour that we will start in a few weeks and that will mark the starting point of the promotion of this new album. One thing is for sure, we liked the way everything came out and the formula that we have applied in each of the songs, especially because of the approach to which it is directed, perhaps some thought that this is something risky and unnecessary, but for us is an interesting pattern that we have in our career as a band. CR: Interestingly, for this compilation they rescued the track The Rest of the Sun Belongs to Me, and it appears on the Winterheart's Guild album but its version for Japan and Korea.
Regarding the selection of these songs, has it been easy or difficult to make a perfect compilation? Or for some reason some track was left out of this project or do you have in mind to make a special edition? TK: Not really, we don't have any bonus tracks for this album and we believe that everyone should have it just as it was recorded, that way people will have the opportunity on the one hand to enjoy it at home, and on the other put an expectation In the concerts of which songs we are going to play, we want to see the impressions that people have of these new arrangements that they knew years ago and that were a meteorite for them, but now we are going to present them in a lighter approach, leaving the feeling that we have given new life or that even those songs that have existed for 20 years with these versions seem like they were made now, because it gives you a special experience in its sound. It would have been easier to put more songs with bonus material for a little more money and that would be more profit for us. About the track The Rest of the Sun Belongs to Me, we decided to rescue it literally from oblivion since it was a song that did not have enough attention in those days, in the same way we rescued For the Sake of Revenge that appears in Unia, and that in my opinion It's a pretty dark song, but with the treatment we gave it, it was one of the singles we released recently and people have been able to receive it very well, and in the end people will be satisfied with everything we've achieved so far. CR: Something that has attracted attention is the arrangements, when we met them in their original versions they were powerful and fast, with these new versions as you said they give a different face but I would not imagine seeing those acoustic versions at full speed, Wolf and Raven is one of those examples (laughs), you would think at first impression Sonata Arctica would be perfect for an MTV Unplugged (laughs)
TK: That song when we played it in the recording sessions was a lot of fun, it's a very happy song in my opinion, although at the beginning it was super difficult to adapt it to the speed of Elias's guitars and Henrik's keyboards that in the end we gave him a more vintage atmosphere with the piano and that combined perfectly with the sound of the guitar. We had a lot of work to put all that together to leave people who are going to enjoy these songs for the first time with a good taste in their mouths, it was a very arduous process but we had fun in the studio to get the most out of the repertoire that we will offer soon . I wouldn't imagine playing that song and people moshpit (laughs), I would think that people in Latin America could do that, even though the songs are a little softer because of the format, anything can happen there (laughs) CR: As we mentioned at the beginning, 2022 marks a time of change, and with this acoustic section the band debuts with Atomic Fire Records, how do you feel about starting a new page in your history with a new label? TK: The truth is that we live in a new moment with people who are important to us, despite the fact that the label we currently work for is another. From the moment that Markus Staiger left Nuclear Blast to start his own label he invited us to be part of his catalog of artists we gladly accepted the offer, and it is gratifying to see him and his co-workers who have supported us during many years to start a new adventure with a completely new company, so we moved with them as we wanted to work with the same people and that is of great value to us now being part of Atomic Fire. CR: From Tomny Kakko's perspective with 11 albums released (12 if you include the 15 years of Ecliptica), and many tours, it's already a long story for Sonata.
How do you feel about traveling this long road that you started in the mid-90's until today? TK: I think I should be very grateful and at the same time blessed with everything that has happened since this adventure began until this day. We have changed a lot over the years, our music has evolved and we are a benchmark for Power Metal both in Europe and in the rest of the world, and thanks to that we have had many fans who have followed us throughout this time, and thanks to them they have boosted our careers and with it the encounter with fame. Despite the changes new fans arrived and this together with the old fans have made this trip incredible for the number of years we have been active, and we always give our best when we record a new album it is like a drink that with over the years it gets old but it has exquisite taste, and that's where you realize that your work is highly valued to this day. CR: Already now that Volume 1 is released, and with plans for a Volume 2 at the end of the year, many are waiting for Talviyö's successor.
Are these the plans that the band has contemplated in its 25th anniversary celebration for 2024? TK: As you mentioned, first we will present Volume 1 on tour and then we finish everything related to Volume 2, for that reason we decided to take advantage of the whole process to get as much material as possible from there, but as everyone knows Due to the Covid we had a lot of delays and maybe we would have launched all this before. In relation to the possible album number 11, there is nothing defined on the table because we want to go on tour first, and we will start precisely in Latin America, although we had everything prepared for two years but with the pandemic dates were postponed again and again, but now and if there are no problems we will play in several countries in the coming weeks, hopefully things go very well, and all that remains is to cross our fingers to get to each of those places and play for as many people as possible. CR: Many want to know what you think when someone tells you, why don't you go back to the more classic sound and Power of the first albums?
TK: I think it's a good idea. We try that every album we release we can present something fresh and different to the fans, despite all the changes we have experienced people want us to return to the sound of the first albums. For us, Power Metal is one of those genres that you have to be detailed not only with the sound, but also with the proposal. There are many Power Metal bands around the world that sound different than Sonata Arctica, including new ones that surpass in performance capabilities and virtuosity, we are very metal lovers, and we would still like to go back to the roots of our early days, especially from the Winterheart's album. Guild where we were very fast and with a very happy sound that made many people's heads fly, although the comments are good towards us, we must consider whether to return to that or continue to evolve for the future. CR: Fans have speculated that there are sagas in the Sonata songs that are linked like a story, for example Caleb's saga (The End Of This Chapter, Don't Say a Word, Caleb, Juliet and Till Death's Donate Us Apart) What do you think of this curious point in the band's discography, and if you have in mind to make a saga for future releases? TK: I would very much love to continue doing these types of sagas because as you said, Johnny, they are intertwined stories that you cannot see either in an album or separate works in the Sonata Arctica discography, I have always liked writing and composing stories. If we go back in history there are great songs that need to be brought to the forefront such as White Pearl, Black Oceans, it could be the beginning of a new chapter to bring new protagonists to life. At this point everything is very possible, and something could happen later. CR: What memories do you have of the visit that the band made in May 2017 in Tegucigalpa, I remember your expression of surprise when giving you a wooden carving, how do you feel with the treatment and affection of the people of Honduras that day?
TK: I have it here in my living room. Despite not going out, I wanted to get to know the city or visit other parts of your country in my free time, Johonny, we had a rest day there at the hotel, and the weather was perfect for us, the people there are wonderful and we would like to return to play again for Honduran fans if the opportunity arose again to perform there. The fans behaved wonderfully with us, they gave us moments of great joy with various gifts, but the woodcarving one stood out a lot there, and the band was super comfortable with the weather, nothing to do with what we have here at home . (laughs) We have many beautiful memories of Honduras and we hope to return again to do a tour later on. CR: What is your point of view about people's fear of reinfecting themselves despite the fact that we already have vaccines against Covid and the Tony variants?
TK: I understand that people's position regarding what is currently happening, many prefer to go to a show with the greatest care and that is not part of the statistics of people who contract the disease in a very serious way, or who in the family circle there are relatives who have suffered this unpleasant experience. What I consider necessary above all is that the family and the people feel safe, but that they need to get rid of their fear and go back out on the streets and to other places before this problem happened. Now is the time for all of us to get up, since with the vaccines the risk is now minimal to get sick again and that everything works in a safe way so that the bands and the fans enjoy a show without fear or distancing. CR: That's right Tony, it only remains to hope that everything improves later and that everything returns to normal, people need to get up from this pandemic and bands like you will seek to make a change in the lives of many people. What message do you want to send to those who enjoyed this interview, and thank you for your time that you gave us at home in Finland
TK: Kiitos Johonny! My good wishes to everyone in Honduras and Latin America is to take care of yourselves at home, especially your families, because we are very anxious to see you again on these upcoming tours that we will have with the new album. We have had very difficult times and from the fans of your region they have always sent us messages of support, and we hope that when we are face to face after these two years of confinement they will live a powerful experience with our music, we know that there are young fans who want to go to our concerts we only ask that you take care of yourselves, as we all have a responsibility to take care of each other and make sure everything returns to normal in the best possible way. We will see each other very soon on tour, and we send a hug from Finland to all of you! Special thanks to Markus Wosgien for his help in this interview and to Tony Kakko for his time at home.
