SORCERER
In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross.
CR: La banda lanzó recientemente su primer sencillo: The Hammer of Witches.
SORCERER
A Dance With The Devil Heading For The Path To Perdition Conexion Rock Radio in its international interviews brings to lovers of Epic Doom Metal a interesting band that is back with a new work under their arms, which seeks to exceed expectations with their fans in various parts of the world, who consider that this will be a time honored classic in his ascending career. Our stop this time is in Stockholm, Sweden, and there we talked with Kristian Niemann, Guitarist of SORCERER, who will provide interesting details of the band's new album, the third in its history called Lamenting of the Innocent, which will come to light in late May via Metal Blade Records. The current lineup of Sorcerer is conformed by of Anders Engberg- Vocals, Richard Evensand- Drums, Kristian Niemann and Peter Hallgren- Guitars, and the new addition is represented by Justin Biggs- Bass. Below we offer you this interesting report: Conexión Rock Radio: Kristian, greetings from Honduras, we send you our best wishes that you are well at home with your families and bandmates with this global emergency, and in this special report we will take advantage of talking with you and sharing with our audience and readers of the next news Sorcerer has for his fans this year, welcome! Kristian Niemann: Hi Johonny, thanks for having me here, and it will be a pleasure to share with you and your audience what the band has for everyone soon! CR: Start this interview with you in congratulating the band for the release of their new album called Lamenting of the Innocent, which will be released in late May through Metal Blade Records. If The Crowning of the Fire King was a great album with this new one it is a fierce contender in their discography
What expectations do you have in this new and interesting chapter of your story? KN: We have many plans to present this new album to our audience, and we consider this final result as the best and most satisfying in our career, as we wanted to expand the sound in various directions, there will be times when the songs sounded heavier, where you will notice parts that are more melodic, some quieter and some that will be slow and fast, as everyone knows we cannot play live for now, so once the album comes out it will be a good option for those who are locked in their houses because our main intention is that this new album be liked by all. CR: The band has been active from 1988 to 1992 and is reactivated in 2010 to release In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross. Many believe that you and the rest of the lineup have given Sorcerer a second youth in his career. How do you feel about being part of this band that returns to action after many years? KN: I was not in the early days of the band, so I joined them when the band was being reformed in 2010, they did not record anything in the past except for some demos that would later appear in compilations, and it seems fair to me that the band be given a second chance, to restart their career at that point. And it is an honor to be part of a band that has been part of an interesting movement in Doom Metal and that many years later we are writing our history, this is fantastic for us. CR: With the band you have been his guitarist since 2010, and we know about your career in bands like Therion, Demonoid and Snowy Shaw
How was your entrance to Sorcerer? KN: With Anders (Band Vocalist) we were bandmates on Therion, he was touring vocalist from 2000-2001, and we have a good friendship with him from years ago, and Johnny Hagel (Bassist) was also briefly on Therion, so with the passing of days I was able to meet the rest of Sorcerer. Over the years the intention was given to reform the band, and they suggested to Hagel to look for new musicians, so he would speak to Anders, to which he replied that it would be good, but we do not know musicians who may have a good performance with us, guitarists or drummers. They approached me, and asked if I would be interested in working on the new Sorcerer lineup, and also invited Ola Englund, who is an excellent guitarist, and who manages his own guitar line, so we recorded these albums, although they have There have been changes over the years, we are all friends today. CR: A quick parenthesis.
We know that you and your brother Johan played for several years in Therion, leaving fantastic works such as Deggial, Sirus B, Lemuria or Secret of the Runes. Many want to know why they left Therion? This question I don´t seek to make controversies, on the contrary it is the point of view of many who have known how to appreciate your work during all that time. Was this a decision of Christofer Johnsson? KN: It´s not controversial, and I will answer you without problems. I considered that my cycle with the band was ending when we released Gothic Kabbalah, and I consider that this album is very diverse in sound, and that caused some people to like the album and others did not. Works like Secret of the Runes, Sirus B, and Lemuria have been great in the band's history, and Gothic Kabbalah was more modern and progressive, Christofer really didn't want to go in that direction anymore, he wanted to go with more folk and sound elements retro of the bands of the 70's, and all that would derive in what later was Sitra Ahra. At that time I already commented to him that the best thing was to separate, because he would not be happy with us in the band, and neither with the direction that was being taken, and it was a logical decision, despite the fact that Therion had a great training in which I played for almost 10 years, and with him we are friends and when they called me to be part of Sorcerer we knew that for both of them it was a decision that everyone won in their own way. CR: We want to know what is the concept behind Lamenting
Many consider in this album that the band maintains your essence and injects fresh and modern air into their sound. Everything indicates on the cover that they have stories related to the inquisition, what details can you share with us? KN: That's right, it is not a Queensrÿche-style chronological story with Operation: Mindcrime, we are not the ones who make an album have a story from start to finish, all the lyrics speak precisely of the Inquisition, you can take any of the lyrics to put the songs in a different order, we're going to be passionate about writing about it, you know, and it was a gratifying feeling that albums like In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross or The Crowning of the Fire King came out, and doing different things It takes us away from using the concept story formula, and we're proud of what we've done so far. CR: The band recently released their first single: The Hammer of Witches.
I must confess that when I saw the video it reminded me of Cathedral with Hopkins (The Witchfinder General). How have you felt about receiving the video on digital platforms? KN: People have been able to respond very well with the single, at first we were nervous if that was a good or bad option to release it, perhaps some people like the video, as well as those who end up hating it. In itself, The Hammer Of Witches is not really the most representative of the entire album because it is the fastest song or the first to be promoted, it is a slow, heavy and atmospheric Doom song, and we are very happy with the response of the people, and it only remains to hope that the rest of the album will appeal to everyone. CR: This is your third album in your history with Metal Blade Records.
How do you feel about being part of a label that is considered to be the cradle of several legendary bands from all over the world? KN: It´s an honor for us to be part of your family, we love it, you know that we know a lot of boys and girls who work there and we met them several times, and it is wonderful that people are so happy to be on the label. As everyone knows Therion belonged to another important label such as Nuclear Blast, but in the case of MB it was they who brought Metallica to light, and other important icons worldwide, for now this third contract represents the last one with the label, but we are looking forward to continuing with them and re-signing for future work. CR: We know that the current lineup is the same members until your reunion in 2010, except for Justin Biggs who is joining in 2019 as bassplayer, in fact this is your first studio album with him in the band. How do you feel that Justin is playing now with the band?
KN: Justin has brought new blood to the band. He is one of the people who have grown up on the Death Metal scene, although he has varied influences such as Pink Floyd, Sabbath, and Maiden. In this album he contributed the composition in two songs, and we consider that he has a lot of talent writing the lyrics, especially for Hammer Of Witches. Johnny Hagel continues to be an active member within the band, despite being one of the main songwriters he is also in charge of the decisions regarding the creative aspect, despite the fact that we are six members in total, he is behind us leaning on what is needed. CR: In a way he has been as the spiritual advisor for the band then ... KN: That's right (laughs), absolutely CR: Sorcerer's music has brought lifelong fans and young fans that have come together along the way in recent years.
What impressions do you have of this generational relay that the band experiences in their live shows? KN: I think when we play live, especially at festivals, I think most people are older, but there is a mix of young people listening to and appreciating old material, although there is no denying the popularity of the band in this As you listen to the Sorcerer material, we are not as popular as Metallica for example, so I think more people are enjoying new things, but we also really enjoy revisiting the old material. CR: Many Heavy and Doom Metal bands around the world see Sorcerer as an influence, what do you think about it? KN: It is a great honor, you know, I mean, it is incredible, I mean that you would never expect that when you start playing the guitar in your room when you are not 16 or 17 years old, and that someday someone will tell me that thanks to I have learned to play guitar or that I have influenced other bands, my answer is just saying thank you for it. CR: The band in all its history has released excellent works, in your point of view, is there any formula for Sorcerer to have an interesting discography with albums that are not underrated?
KN: I mean you at least know where we are, I guess we still have some good ideas, I hope we can only pitch to a very high level for ourselves, we don't leave anything that we think maybe this isn't great, you know, we never left make that happen on an album, we always want to give our best, what we think is the best, of course, it's different for the times, I mean some people would think that this album maybe has some really cracked moments that's how it is for us , what we should be true to ourselves, you know, everyone says you have to be honest with yourself and release it, but you think it is the best thing you can do at that point, that is what we do and these people think that we are extremely happy with that, you know who we have put a lot of effort into making these albums. CR: Do you think that this point in the history of the band will release a live album with the success that Lamenting will have?
KN: Sure, I mean I would, I would be absolutely willing to release a live DVD, but the thing is that if you want to make a live album and it's really good, you have to have a lot of shows to be able to offer interesting things in content, recording a festival for example, but we don't want to do that, we want it to be an incredible show and that we can play many shows, so we feel that everything is like looking for something that is perfect, and that it must be so, hopefully that moment, but we don't know when and where precisely we will record something interesting live. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have any plans to tour in the final months of 2020 or 2021? If they came on tour in Latin America, it is sure that many fans will wait for them here KN: We are working on that right now with our agent who coordinates the dates. I think everyone in the band is looking for an idea to come up with a concept or find something that can bring our live performances back, for now we are expecting some official confirmations in May and June, but they would probably be canceled. I guess you are trying to find things that will work for the fall, and for now we have no concrete plans at the moment, so we will be on the safe track. And about the fans in your region or in Latin America in general, we would love to tour in those countries, it´s incredible, and I have lived with Therion years ago. If we could get to those countries, we would be there in the blink of an eye, and now it's just a matter of preparing dates, logistics and budgets, and it will be a matter of waiting when dates are announced and we can see many fans out there. CR: What message would you like to send to those who read us in this report and thank you for answering our questions on Conexión Rock Radio?
KN: Thank you for inviting me, I am truly honored. We are really grateful for all the support they have given us to this day, we hope you like this new album we made it for you, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. CR: Kristian, thank you very much for your time! The best for you and your bandmates back home with this emergency, please stay safe, as well as our friends at Metal Blade Records for their help in this interview, and we look forward to speaking again in the future to continue the story of an iconic band like Sorcerer! KN: Thank you for having me here for your readers, Johonny, it was an honor and take care of yourself friends! Greetings from all Sorcerer for all Latin America and the rest of the world! A hug! Thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey from the Metal Blade Records Promotion and Press team for their help in this interview, to Kristian Niemann for the time given in this report, thank you very much!
