SPACE CHASER
(risas)

SPACE CHASER
The Immortals Who Seek to Give Us Life Young Thrash Metal, but with the spirit of the old school A combination of Science Fiction, dystopian elements, aliens. These are the elements that appear in this new report that Conexion Rock Radio offers to all of you in terms of releases for the second half of 2021, and this is our recommendation so that you listen and learn about its interesting history, and especially its music. We moved to Berlin, Germany, and that is where we make this special report with Matthias Scheuerer, Drummer of the band Space Chaser, who spend an important moment in their career with the release of their album number 4 in their career called Give Us Life, which came to light on July 16 and begins a working relationship with the label Metal Blade Records. Space Chaser was formed in 2011, they would be released with a demo a year later, and later with their EP Decapitron, which would generate everyone's attention towards the band, resulting in the release in 2014 of their first album Watch the Skies! From there an interesting adventure would begin for these young musicians where they lived experiences on the road, and their name appeared in several important festivals around Europe. They are currently conformed by: Sebastian Kerlikowski- Bass and Vocals, Matthias Scheuerer- Drums, Martin Hochsattel and Leo Schacht- Guitars, and Siegfried Rudzynski- Vocals. You will know all the details related to their new album, the experience lived in the studio sharing work with important musicians of the scene, the concept behind Give Us Life, the thought of the band in the face of the pandemic, without leaving out the plans that these Germans are looking to achieve soon, and do not hesitate, this band comes with a firm commitment to conquer several continents, because in the midst of an apocalyptic and uncertain future, these immortals will seek to give us life Conexión Rock Radio: Hi Matthias, how are you, I hope everything is fine at home with this emergency and I thank you for the time you gave me to do this interview for the fans of the band around the world, and especially the new fans in Latin America to share the news that Space Chaser has in 2021, welcome!
Matthias Scheuerer: Hello Johonny, thank you very much, I will tell you that here in Germany it is starting to rain, and of course the same wishes for all your readers to stay safe with this pandemic, although it has been a very difficult situation we are waiting that all this is normalized. CR: That's good to know Mathias. I start this day's interview (afternoon in Germany) with you to know how they have felt as a band to face this problem that since 2020 has left us without concerts, festivals, and tours MS: We are punished with this situation. Among the bad things, the time has been taken advantage of for bands in general, in our case we decided to focus on recording the new album, preparing videos and doing the proper promotion with the media to do interviews. We are looking forward to playing again very soon, and for that reason we hope that this problem doesn´t extend any longer. CR: Now let's talk about the Good News.
The band released their new album on July 16, the fourth in their history called Give Us Life, through Metal Blade Records, and for many this album will join the list of the best of this year. How do you feel about publishing this work in these strange circumstances? MS: Thank you for your words, it is very pleasant that from the other side of the world you have liked what we have done. We are very happy, one to launch a new album, and two to now have a new label like Metal Blade. For our fans all this has represented an important change and they are waiting for us to return again to do concerts. In our case, we already have an agenda scheduled for March 2022, although this implies seeing if some festivals are canceled or will continue to stand. So we are taking the opportunity to make a great promotion with this new work and we only have to wait for the time to play again for the fans. CR: 5 years have passed since the release of Dead Sun Rising and for many who will meet and hear the band for the first time it will be an interesting discovery, this is one of the best releases of the second half of 2021, and those who are lovers of Thrash from the new school it is a fact that you will gain new fans in other continents, and many will say that there is a lot of influence from bands like Agent Steel, Overkill, Anthrax or Gamma Bomb
How has it been for you to see all this evolution that you have had from the first 2 jobs to this new one? MS: When we started as a band we were very young, we wanted to have fun and make good music, but as the years went by we decided to take this very seriously. As you mentioned, all this was an evolution, and in these last 5 years they have been learning and maturity both in composition, lyrics and arrangements. We consider that all this time was favorable as a collective and one of the main reasons in this new album is that it is more brutal than the first two, and at the end of all that process we are satisfied with what we obtained, and coming back with something new is gratifying. , and we hope that many around the world will like what we have in store. CR: Give Us Life is guaranteed to be enjoyed in a moshpit at home, festivals, or even in space! (laughs)
Tracks like Remnants of Technology, Juggernaut, The Immortals, Burn Them All and the title track already have the merit of being classics. What is the concept behind this new album? MS: The cover was made by Mario López (originally from Guatemala) and he has done several works for us before, in the same way with Evil Invader, Skeletal Remains, Them, among others. We told him to take the creative freedom to make the cover based on our music, and he decided to make a story that reflected the fight that humanity has against cyborgs that have artificial intelligence and that seek to annihilate them. So in our lyrics many dystopian and science fiction elements are reflected, and the message is that humanity fights for time so that it gives us life. All this speaks of the cycle that has intertwined life and death in a universal and scientific context, and when Mario presented the cover we decided that it was the ideal one for this new album. CR: Is there any influence on the lyrics and themes that the band addresses in their albums? books? movies or video games? MS: That's right, we have many references in movies and series, for example, Netflix's Altered Carbon is our vocalist's favorite series, that's where the lyrics for Cryoshock were influenced, also from classic movies like Stanley Kubrick's Space Odyssey 2001, and Astrologer Carl Sagan's books, especially Blue Dot, so we have a lot to offer in our lyrics. CR: We know that the great Dan Swanö worked with you on the mastering for the new album. What experiences did the band leave in working with Dan for this occasion? MS: Working with Dan was an excellent experience for all of us. He has already had working with many bands and it was an honor that he accepted to do the mixing and mastering of this material. CR: With Give Us Life the band debuts with Metal Blade Records
How does Space Chaser feel in being part of one of the biggest record companies in the world? MS: We are very excited to be a part of a label that has influenced many bands around the world. Seeing the two crossed axes was part of my growth as a music lover and that over the years I have bought records from that label, and now all this is part of a dream that we realize and that we are proud to be part of their family. CR: Seeing the success that this new album will have, everyone thinks that Give Us will be the most personal of his career and that it could set a sonic pattern for more future works, what do you think about this? MS: I consider this to be our best work at the production level. We have read several reviews that have highlighted that point, especially the structures of each of the songs, and it is gratifying to know that how people have appreciated our work up to this point, especially those who have been impressed at the first listen. The point is that we have given the best of each one of us in shaping this work, and with this we define our sound and what we intend to do within the Thrash Metal scene worldwide. CR: Space Chaser is part of an interesting wave of young Thrash Metal bands that have caught the attention of locals and strangers.
How do you feel about maintaining that tradition that has been in force for more than four decades? MS: In fact, it's almost 40 years (laughs) and many bands have followed in those people's footsteps in those days. For those of us who love Thrash Metal, many will be there, feel the music, and it is interesting how young people start listening to metal thanks to that genre, it is like you fall in love for the first time, and that is why this music will always be special for us, and we hope we can live up to those bands of the 80's and as you say, being part of it we keep the flame alive. CR: As part of the promotion of the new album, the band is planning to make an online presentation with this new material or will they wait for all this to normalize and play in a face-to-face concert? MS: We had an experience of doing a broadcast last year when several clubs in Berlin organized an event together this in order to stay afloat monetarily speaking and people turned to support them through donations, and that helped to maintain the things a bit in the strongest months of the pandemic, if you ask me now it might not work, we have tried to do this ourselves and it is best to wait, if there is an opportunity to do a transmission with good logistics and offer something of quality we could participate in it. For now we have offers so we are waiting for the moment to be able to do something out there. CR: As you know Matthias, the pandemic in its strongest months caused the closure of companies and therefore many people lost their jobs, generating as a consequence that we did not have access to buy a CD, vinyl or other merchandise because nobody had money.
The platforms helped in a way to fill the void in homes around the world for as long as everything was normalized. But piracy would come making this the most accessible and cheapest option to have that material What's your point of view on how this affected bands and labels the most in this emergency? MS: Well, I think we all know that it costs a lot of money to make records and being a musician makes things not easy, I have seen people who download our musical and then when they have money they buy the album (laughs), although piracy has done that everything is difficult in these times there will be people who will buy the physical formats. Even since we were young, we have practiced piracy in recording our things on tapes and we gave them to a friend or exchanged music, so that phenomenon will always be there (laughs) CR: Seeing the excellent promotion they have had with the album, and especially with the video of Remnants of Technology, by the way, a video that has been very well received by the fans and that has its funny moments, they have plans to do more videos or are you selecting what is possibly the next single?
MS: We have a new video that will complement the promotion of the album, if you asked me what could be my favorite video track it would be Cryoshock, but it has already been decided that the next video will be for The Immortals. So we will see what other surprises we will prepare later. CR: One of the attractive points in the band is the voice, for those who know Space Chaser they will say that Siegfried Rudzynski is a mixture of Bruce Dickinson and Bobby Blitz at the time of singing. What comments has the band had on this type of reaction?
MS: That's right, we've gotten a lot of compliments towards Siegfried who has Bruce's charisma and melodic, and Bobby's aggression and we're really happy that people see him every time he performs and that they compare him to those two big names. He is a perfect mix of both the Maiden and Overkill groups in our sound. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have a scheduled tour schedule or is the outlook for now uncertain in 2021?
MS: We have been preparing things, the main idea of all this is to start a tour between March and April 2022 to be able to be present in various countries for festivals, and it will be an extensive tour if all that can be done. It will be a matter of crossing your fingers that it happens, but seeing the current conditions we are in uncertainty, but we are confident that 2022 will be a year that will be of positive things for the band. CR: Matthias, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview? I want to thank you for taking the time to do this special report for Conexion Rock Radio. MS: Thank you very much Johonny for the time to listen to our album, to comment on your points of view, it was a great honor to have your work and support, and to the fans in Latin America we tell you that at some point we hope to be able to play for you in a live show that that would be our next step now, and we are happy to know that our sound is heard and appreciated a lot in those countries. CR: Matthias !, thanks for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! In the same way we thank our Friends of Metal Blade for making this talk possible, and we are looking forward to speaking with you again in the future and talking about a new page in the history of a great band like Space Chaser. Have a perfect day at home! MS: Thanks Johonny, and greetings to all your readers, take care and stay healthy! Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey at Looters and Metal Blade Records for the opportunity in make possible this interview, and to Matthias Scheuerer for his time in this conversation.
