Spectral Realm
A Journey to a Dark Ocean Conexion Rock Radio continues its journey around the world offering you bands that seek to expand their sound and proposal to other continents, and for that reason we make that approach between the bands and their fans so that they know their music and their plans for the future. Johannesburg, South Africa is our new stop, and there we talked with Ryno Rabe, Guitar of the band Spectral Realm, who will share in this special report of that country everything related to its history and the good reception of its first album called Voyage to Spectral Realm, and currently Spectral Realm prepares us interesting surprises soon. Conexion Rock Radio: Ryno, it's an honor to have you here for our audience and readers in Central and Latin America that wants to know the history and upcoming news that Spectral Realm have in this year for their fans, welcome! Ryno Rabe: Hi, it's a pleasure to be here talking to you and the South American Metalheads out there! CR: Start this special report with the band we want to know if Spectral has contemplated in 2019 or 2020 record a new album?
What details can you share about it? RR: Well originally, we planned to release our forthcoming album, “The spectral witch of the Hexriver” in 2019 but due to some personal reasons, we had to postpone it to a bit later until we can be 100 percent back on track with all the final pieces that need to be completed. It's a concept album about a South African legend. The legend is about a beautiful young woman who is constantly bothered by young men who want her hand in marriage. She refuses them all but one day she sends her one true love on a quest to find her a very rare flower in the mountains. If he can bring her the flower she will accept his request. The man finally reaches the top of the mountain and falls to his death. This brings the young woman to madness and this is where we add our own spectral touch to the story. CR: How was the reception that critics and fans have given to the band's debut album called Voyage to Spectral Realm, released in 2015.
How do you feel in taking an important step in your career as a band? RR: Our first album “Voyage to Spectral Realm” was received quite well by our fans locally and we've had good reviews from our fans overseas. It was definitely a big step forward for us as band knowing that we have worked very hard on it since 2011. It's always a grueling process to complete something that has to be exactly the way you want it, so it was a great success for us releasing that album. CR: In your own words how would you define Voyage for the people who know for first time the band, it´s conceptual or will we have different stories? RR: For me the style and sound of this album was very much inspired by the second wave of black metal bands such as: Emperor, Satyricon, Dissection, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth etc. But there's quite a lot of differences in the album which we refer to as the spectral sound. For instance our music has a lot of solos and thrash riffs and is definitely a metal album with atmosphere and melodies. CR: What are the Lyrical themes that speak in your songs?
RR: We have always had the theme of the spectral realm which is a spiritual world between the living and the dead. Also our vocalist Septic Sceptre uses a lot of phrases which incorporates the universe, mythology, and our personal outlook on the world. So it really has a diverse spectrum of themes. CR: Let's talk a little about the history of the band.
Spectral Realm was formed in 2010 in Johannesburg, after of many shows and recognition in the local scene released Voyage To Spectral Realm. How was the idea in make an interesting band like this why the name? RR: Originally the band was created by me as a solo project. Only after my brother, Septic Sceptre convinced me to form a full band to play live, it took the shape of a real band. At the time there were a few local bands who played this kind of style but we wanted to add more ideas the style of music. The name definitely was something different to what people have heard of so it was easy for us to choose it. We went through quite a lot of different members in the early stages to get the right people on board. Only in 2011 we played our first live show at a local club. CR: Currently the lineup is complemented with Neville in Keyboards, Estiaan on Guitars, your Brother Theo on Vocals, Andrew in Guitars, and Leon on Drums. What experiences do you have of working with them for the recording of their first album and everything that have you done so far? RR: A lot of the recording was done by myself, Septic Sceptre and Leon. Estiaan did a solo on the song Abysmal development. It is a pleasure working with very talented and committed musicians as these guys. After all that’s the reason why they were chosen to be part of this band hehe! Neville was the last member to have joined the band. We knew him for a very long time before he joined so to have him on board was just like putting together the missing puzzle piece. CR: What is your point of view that the band currently has in the local scene in Johannesburg, has it been easy or difficult for Spectral to be able to stand out among many bands seeking international recognition?
RR: Personally being in the scene for about 10 years, it has had a lot of ups and downs and I'm sure it was the same before I started going to gigs. But in our time we were always welcomed by the scene and we felt like we brought something different. Of course it is very difficult getting tours outside our country because first of all, it's all organized independently. So finances will always play a big role. CR: Currently the band is looking for a label that supports you, or do you see that the independent way is the best option for now? RR: We are always open to find a label that can help distribute our music world wide so that our music can reach as many people as possible. We have fans from Europe, South America, India and parts of the US that we would love to visit one day but for now getting our albums to every corner of the planet is our main goal. CR: In recent years, has the band participated in being an opening act for international bands or touring other countries?
RR: We were fortunate enough to open up for the Italian Death Metal band, Fleshgod Apocalypse in 2012 which was a mindblowing experience. In 2015 we opened up for the brutal Aborted from Belgium and have played alongside bands such as Nervo Chaos (Brazil), Pulvis et Umbra (Italy). These were all stepping stones for us as a band growing each time we have the privilege playing alongside international artists. CR: What are the next plans that the band will make soon for those who want to be aware of you?
RR: Our goal in the near future will be to release our second full length album and play a lot of shows promoting our new music. We will plan some shows across our borders hopefully in Botswana and Mozambique seeing that they have such passionate fans there. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us on this day, and thanks for answering our questions at Conexion Rock Radio. RR: We would like to thank Conexion Rock Radio for your support and reaching out to us here in South Africa! It is a great privilege for us to know there's metalheads out there in South America supporting what we do. All the best and cheers from South Africa \m/ Special thanks to Ewa Martinez for her help in making this interview possible, and Ryno Rabe for her time granted in this interview.
