SPIRIT ADRIFT

SPIRIT ADRIFT
A Band That Forges A Brilliant Future New interview in the month of our XII Anniversary on Conexión Rock Radio, and we bring lovers of Thrash and Doom Metal to an interesting band that will seek to conquer you with their sound, and here you will learn about their history and of course their future plans. Our contact on this occasion is to the United States, precisely between Arizona and Texas, and we spoke with Marcus Bryant, Drummer of the band Spirit Adrift who return to action with their new EP called Forge Your Future, which will be released worldwide next October 19, 2021 through Century Media Records, and at the discretion of our guest this will be the preamble to what will be his next album that will see the light at some point in 2021, and in which Spirit has managed to overcome the crisis generated by the global pandemic of Covid 19 with releases well received by fans and critics such as Enlightened in Eternity and their EP Angel & Abyss Redux. Spirit Adrift was formed in 2015 by the hand of Nate Garrett, who at the beginning assumed the tasks of multi-instrumentalist, and who is currently the Vocalist and Guitar along with Brayant who shares this adventure from 2017 to date, and who count on his credit with four releases, three EPs and a Split. We invite you to get a drink or your snacks, make yourself comfortable and be part of the bright future that Spirit seeks to do from now on with this new adventure in his career. Conexión Rock Radio: Marcus, how are you, greetings from Honduras, I hope everything back home is fine, and it is an honor to do this special report with our readers about the important news. that a great band like Spirit Adrift will have in 2021, welcome!
Marcus Bryant: Thank you Johonny for your interest in us, and it is a pleasure to be able to chat with you this afternoon. CR: Thanks again, Brayan, and how has it been for you as a band to face all this situation that has affected many bands since 2020? MB: For many people including us all of this has been strange so far. So we've been busy and doing things back and forth, and we played in December 2019, that was our last concert before the pandemic started. We participated in the Decibels Beer and Metal Fest in Los Angeles. After finishing all the process related to our album Enlightened in Eternity, and we decided to release it in 2020. Despite having come to light in the middle of the pandemic it was our decision, and despite not having tours or live concerts it is a situation that is currently difficult, but with patience we will wait to do live performances again, we are dying to do that and if you ask me we're ready to start over and go back to touring (laughs) CR: In all the bad things that affect the world with this situation, the band has good news.
Spirit Adrift will release thier new EP called Forge Your Future through Century Media Records on October 19. And definitely with these songs the band is literally forging its future! What expectations do you have in releasing this new material in these strange circumstances? MB: Thank you very much for the comment, we are glad that you liked this material, because this was all an initiative of Nate (Guitar and Voice of the band) and we recorded several demos at his house outside of Austin, Texas. This EP as you said it comes out is our first release through Century Media globally and we are really excited about everything that has happened since Enlightened, and we are not the ones to sit around and wait for things to happen, we just like it keep the ball rolling and keep things moving so Nate is always writing and working on new ideas. During this confinement we did a lot of demos and we ended up selecting 3 songs that were our favorites, so we started to improve them and at the end of the process we were very excited, and we don't expect it to be release day so we can share them with everyone both on digital platforms and in physical format. CR: In this new EP have you worked again with Ryan Bram, Howie Weinberg and Will Borza?
If so, everything indicates that we have a winning formula in the band's sound. MB: That's right, all the work was commissioned by Ryan Bram, and we recorded again at Homewrecker Studios, we have had good experience working with him, and I must tell you that it is gratifying to be able to count on his experience again for this EP, and when listening to him we were surprised for the result, we were super happy, and we are proud to have Ryan in our team, since for us the sound and the recording quality is a very important point as a band. CR: With these 3 songs, everything indicates that the band possibly by 2022 will offer us a new album, any details that you can share with us about it?
MB: We always work with Natan on demos and other ideas and there is always material in the works. So we are working ahead, that's what I can say about the next album. In reference to the EP, we decided it was kind of a continuation of what we did with In Eternity, and it doesn't necessarily reflect how it might or might not sound in the future, so ideas are taking shape for what will be the new album of the band. CR: We want to know if these 3 songs will appear on the next album or if this material is merely exclusive for the occasion. MB: This is all exclusive material for this EP only, and these songs will only appear here. For the new album we will have new songs to offer for all of you, and for that reason new ideas are being prepared. CR: This is the band's second work with the Record label Century Media (taking into account that in the band's history they released 4 albums and 4 EPs), with Enlightened in Eternity being the beginning of a new page. How do you guys feel about working with a major record company like this?
MB: It has been incredible. I remember growing up listening to Century Media bands. Working with them is really cool. Right after the Aftershock Festival that we played in California at the end of 2019, we have been talking with them and especially with their representatives in Europe. The conversations with the label were satisfying, it's like the stars almost aligned, and they were very interested in us having a working relationship, and with our friends at 20 Buck Spin we've had good times with them. Now with Century Media they have been a great support from the moment we started working with them, and for me they are a great support, and what they have achieved so far has been incredible. CR: Your debut with the band was for the album Curse of Conception of 2017, what is your point of view in working with Nate Garrett, and the interesting musical evolution that Spirit has had in recent years, everyone comments that they have a discography very interesting and no underrated albums
MB: Thank you very much for valuing our career in that way. Working with Nate has been a pleasant experience all these years. When he recorded his first EP (Behind - Beyond in 2016) seeing the good reaction that people had months later, he would enter the studio to record his first full-length Chained to Oblivion, and he literally took care of everything, the production and the instruments. At the end of that year we sat down to talk and he told me that he was looking for members to reinforce the Spirit Adrift lineup, since he had all the ideas for what would be the band's new album called Curse of Conception. So without thinking I got on board, and we actually had to split up some of the drumming duties, as we both played and we had to define our roles on the recording (laughs), but it was great to get to work with him, and one of those things is that you had the feeling of having played for a long time and doing many shows together. When we heard the first album and started touring I thought, this is the person anyone would want to play and work with in a band, and who seeks to share different approaches to songwriting within heavy metal in general. It's something I want to be a part of and for both of us it becomes a necessity since we both love so much music, we like to listen and play all the sub-genres were in heavy metal or outside of it, be it southern rock, classic rock, country music, electronic music, even soul music. Clearly Nate is a person who has a ton of different influences, and it's not a matter of whether you know a couple of bands. He has been great, we talk all the time, we always work on songs and ideas from one place to another, and he asks me if you heard this album, and he shares curious things to meet bands and comment on them. I believe that working with Nate, in addition to a commitment that involves time, also implies fun, and I think that is important in the health of a band. CR: Currently the band is made up of two members, once conditions improve, do you want to work with musicians for their live shows? or Spirit is exclusively a band that records exclusively in studio?
MB: I can tell you that Spirit is a band that lends itself more to a live show. Currently we are joined by Preston Brayan on Guitar, who by the way is my Brother, and he has collaborated on the keyboards since the launch of Curse of Conception until today, and we also have the help of Sonny DeCarlo as Bassist. So we have a full band, and we are ready to give everyone a good heavy metal show as it should be (laughs) CR: It's good to know that the band have support, and as you say, people are waiting to see you live. As you know, since 2020 we are all suffering "forced vacations" and it is not known when the tide will turn for the music scene. What is your point of view on these forced changes that both bands and labels have had to deal with since then?
MB: I must tell you that this pandemic has obviously been incredibly difficult in both the entertainment industry and the music industry, and much tougher for so many, many more people than us, as if we were in a privileged position, but with that being said , it has been very difficult not to see live music and not to play live music, you know, the industry is trying to move forward with more releases and more streaming shows so you know we released in 2020 an EP called Angel & Abyss Redux, which are acoustic songs, and as artists we felt the need to launch something as a response to the pandemic to say that we are alive and we are active in one way or another on the map. With these conditions still in force, we are close to releasing our new EP after closing a cycle with a full-length album, and we are only hoping that we can go out again and, we ask everyone to take care, since things are not going good at this time. It would be great if people were to wear masks and get vaccinated so the industry can survive because the recruiting agents, the promoters, the bands have been using all of this, people are not making money and people love to watch live music. I mean that they have to do what they can and try to be responsible in order to save this industry, save lives and other important aspects of this business and it is our obligation as artists to ask them to take action at shows, to take care of themselves and enjoy themselves what the bands offer them at that time. CR: Speaking of all this deployment that in recent months many bands have made to get closer to their fans like you know the experiences of the concerts in streaming or transmitted on platforms or communities either by ticket or free, we want to know if the band has done this kind of thing previously or do you prefer to wait for everything to normalize to play face to face with the fans?
MB: I think that everything that bands do today is great, it is a good initiative for artists to bring their music to light in all possible ways and for people to want to see them perform. We did a couple of streaming shows, and for us we look at this as a benefit, it is always strange to interact with a camera and not with real people. What was done to make our presentation possible was to record our parts each at home. Hopefully all this changes later, it is necessary to play for the people, since many bands live off the energy in a concert and it makes that experience a pleasant one for everyone involved. CR: Currently the band has concerts scheduled for 2022, or for now everything is uncertain until the situation improves with the vaccines? MB: We have scheduled three shows reserved for this year and shows in October, we are doing October 18 here in Phoenix and then we are doing two shows in New York and that is October 20 and 21 and we will be sharing the stage with our friends from Disrhythmia. So for now we have these shows ready and scheduled, even though things outside are latent with the delta variant, the idea is to come back again when all this improves and we definitely want to hit the road again, we are dying to come back or that. It's what we do, that's why we do this and, like you said, it's about those live, exchanging energy with the fans, you know, and that's what we're all missing, that's what the world is crying out for. screams, and we want to play again and see some bands live. And for us this whole process is a test. CR: We know that it is very premature to ask this question in the conditions we currently live in. I don't know if the fans have proposed to make a live album in the future? How would you see Spirit Adrift do a post pandemic project?
MB: It's hard to say what we are going to do in the future because we just try to follow what is the natural path in the life of the band, so like I said, nature always defines a pattern, and we are always growing as musicians. and composers in a collective environment, and that as part of that collective we seek to pressure ourselves to be able to make records or as projects like the one you are mentioning. This is a somewhat vague answer, but you can expect growth, that the future will define things within a band no matter what genre you play with, you will always be there playing from a traditional line to a more extreme point, and it is only a matter time to define what is next for us. CR: Marcus, at the end of this conversation, what message do you want to send to the people who have read and enjoyed this special report for Conexion Rock Radio?
MB: First of all, thanks to you Johonny for the opportunity to address your readers both in Centro and in Latin America, the only thing I can say is that we thank all those who support us with our music, that we all keep this scene alive as well. than radio shows, podcast interviews, and places where we can perform later. We do all of this for those who love music, those of us who work in the industry, and we are proud to be part of a beautiful community and I consider the stage as my favorite place to be interacting with everyone and working with many people in road. We are honored to be a part of the whole scene, we are honored to be able to know, to drop our contribution in this gigantic world like heavy metal, you know, we are delighted to be able to contribute. And again thank you all for keeping the music alive and something is certain, sooner or later whatever, we will all meet again and enjoy a concert without fear or restrictions. A hug to all and thanks again for your support! CR: Marcus, thank you very much for your time, and we thank our friends at Looters for giving us the opportunity to talk with you on this day, we hope to talk again in the future about another interesting chapter in the history of a good band like Spirit Adrift. Have a great afternoon at home! MB: Thank you very much Johonny for doing the interview, and also have a good afternoon at home, and stay safe. Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey at Looters for making this interview possible, and to Marcus Brayant for the time allotted on this report.
