MARC URSELLI´S STEPPENDOOM

MARC URSELLI´S STEPPENDOOM
The Beginning Of A Mystical Adventure Conexión Rock Radio presents a new interview for all those who seek to learn about new proposals which seek to be projected as far as possible so that people from all over the world appreciate their work and proposal, resulting in the emergence of new fans in various countries around the globe. The band that appears in the report seeks to reach the ears of locals and strangers with their Drone/Doom Metal sound. Ladies and Gentlemen, with you: Marc Urselli's SteppenDoom. A project born from the creative mind of Marc Urselli, our guest on this occasion, and we talked about the origins of this interesting band, and especially their first studio album called SteppenDoom, which was released at the end of 2022. , whose prominence falls mainly on the traditional songs of Mongolia, reflecting in their songs the richness of both tradition and history of that country. Urselli shares everything related to this project, the guests that include musicians from different nations, the concept that he offers us with this debut and the challenges involved in staging a concert, but far from being discouraged by these challenges, he comments that the band will focus more on studio production, thus offering their fans a continuity in their stories. We invite you to make yourself comfortable and enjoy an imaginary journey through the beautiful landscapes of Mongolia where SteppenDoom shows the whole world the beginning of his mystical adventure. Conexión Rock Radio: Good morning there to New York Marc, thanks for agreeing to our invitation where we will talk with our readers around the world about the news that your interesting project has for this year, it is an honor to talk with you and welcome! Marc Urselli: Hello Johonny, thanks for your interest in talking about my project and here ready to share interesting details that we have with the band in the coming months. CR: Thanks Marc, I start my interview by asking how do you feel about going back to concerts and tours after these almost 3 years of forced stoppage that the world experienced in 2020?
MU: Here in New York things have been back to normal for a long time, so we go to a lot of concerts, dinners, and everything is normal here in the city, and this has brought an air of tranquility to people and they like how Things are now, in my personal case I didn't like to stay at home, so I'm happy that this is over and that the artists appear again doing shows for the people. CR: The important thing is that everything is returning to normal and that will help the art industry to recover. Let's talk about your record debut called SteppenDoom which was released on November 18, 2022 through Magnetic Eye Records.
CR: I want to know if you are one of the people who seeks to meet people's expectations, or do you expect to receive the reactions around the world from those who hear about your proposal both on a digital and physical platform? MU: I think I'm very happy with the way the album release turned out. I have had positive reviews and very good analysis from those who took the time to listen to it and comment on it in different places around the world, the most important thing for me is that many have liked the album, in the same way I am grateful to the people who has worked with me on this project, especially those in charge of the album art. The label has launched a special edition where the person can find the album in CD and 12-inch vinyl format, to which we add another 7-inch vinyl, a book and a poster. Magnetic Eye has done an excellent job for this edition.
I should mention that there is a bonus track on the CD called A-dkar Theg Pa that lasts approximately 34 minutes, and on the vinyl edition it appears in an edited form with a duration of 6 minutes. All of that material appears only in the box, but also people can buy things separately like the book with the CD or the CD alone, so there are several options for people to access the material that we are offering. CR: With all the positive things that are happening with the band, have you considered organizing tours in the next few days or are you currently preparing an agenda to be able to offer all this live to the public? MU: The truth is that we don't have plans to tour for SteppenDoom, perhaps in the future, the main reason is that the musicians that make up this project are from various parts of the world, the throat singers are from Mongolia and Siberia, while the guitarists They are from the United States and the United Kingdom, due to the distance factor, things are complicated for everyone and that is why we have not been able to present our proposal live. I recently presented the album which was produced at East Side Sound where I worked on the recording and mixing and we had a party for the release of the album. Several recording industry executives and musicians who were with us at the time were present, and we decided to include headphone stations so people could listen to the songs in different places at the same time. So it was a lot of fun when people came with us to be able to look at the material. CR: It is very curious and at the same time interesting that a Swiss musician is fascinated by the culture and history of a country like Mongolia, many people know about The Hu's proposal for example, what motivated you to do a combination of Drone/Doom Metal with traditional throat songs from a nation with such an ancient language?
MU: I have been very fascinated with throat singing since I was a child and even more so when I was young. I grew up in Italy (precisely in Grottaglie, Apulia) and there a form of singing called El Canto A Tenore has developed, which is traditional on the island of Sardinia, the first time I heard that it sounded very curious to me, and that awakened my fascination in knowing more about it, for that reason I decided to study more the Mongolian singing and the instruments that are used, I thought if this could fit perfectly into metal, but nobody decided to do it and with SteppenDoom you have the result there. CR: We know that your project was formed in 2012 and it took you 10 years to release this album, what caused this long period of time? Besides being a multi instrumentalist, were you considering looking for the right musicians or were you waiting for the right time to release this album?
MU: The main intention was not to wait any longer, but let me explain why it has taken a long time for this album to see the light. I'm a producer for other artists, and also a studio engineer, having a lot of work with these people I literally had no time for my own compositions. When the pandemic took us by surprise in 2020, I knew that this was the perfect opportunity to work on my songs, I had enough time to organize my time and focus completely on that work, I was in charge of mixing and producing, I was able to carry out that project that I had saved in my head 10 years ago, despite the collaborations that came from distant countries, I had challenges to be able to communicate in their language and that also took a long time, but in the end everything could be completed for this process. CR: Russian, Canadian, Mongolian musicians appear collaborating on this record, but here we also find such well-known names as Matt Pike from High On Fire, Steve Von Till from Haverstman, Massimo Pupillo, Trey Spruance from Mr Bungle, Aaron Aedy from Paradise Lost and Johannes Persson from Cult Of Luna, a surprise for those in the know about their careers.
What impressions have you had of the participation of these special guests who appear here? MU: Everyone who participated here was extremely generous and enthusiastic in this collaboration, in the case of Steve, who is the guitarist and vocalist of his band Neurosis, he was one of the first to support with his talent, and he told me that it is the first time that he would experience the guitars with throat singers, and he was fascinated by that sound, we decided to work together, and so with the passage of time the other people appeared during the recording process. Everyone else I asked to work with was extremely generous with their time and very enthusiastic to collaborate and that's the spirit of music: collaboration. CR: What is the concept that SteppenDoom offers people with this album? Legends or stories of Mongolian culture? What details can you share?
MU: The songs themselves are not traditional, due to the fact that I wrote them. What is traditional in this case are the lyrics, and this is where the throat singers choose their own lyrics that talk about nature, the sky, horses, fire, and all the elements of nature and are things that they traditionally express in their singing. So in this case, I gave them creative freedom so that each of the singers could contribute their own style to the lyrics in each of the songs. CR: One of the attractive points is the cover, which is the work of Josh Wilkinson, what impressions do you have of the work that Josh has done for this SteppenDoom debut? MU: It is very interesting that you ask about the images in this album, I had several ideas in my mind of how the cover should be, there are several photographs of Mongolians living in Tuva (eastern region of Siberia and which is part of Russian territory), and he wanted to integrate the Eagle, due to the fact that the inhabitants use eagles as hunting companions and thus be able to look for food. That's how the concept came to me and I told Joshua about it, and in the end he surprised me with a beautiful cover, and there are many photographs that can be appreciated, especially when you open the vinyl and contemplate its interior images. The Eagle has a leading role both on the cover and on the back cover. For this work, we had the contributions of two photographers, one from Tuva and the other from Mongolia, and we communicated with both and explained the ideas that should appear in the album and the state of mind that should be given to the album. disc as far as presentation is concerned. In the deluxe edition there are between 3 to 4 posters, that way people can appreciate the images, but especially the book that contains 48 pages where beautiful landscapes of Mongolia appear, and I consider that it is the most beautiful part of that section, so much so that you could consider that book an edition of National Geographic. CR: You know that the Mongolians are very proud of their history and tradition, which they express to the four winds and that the world can learn about the legends that have been kept alive through their songs over the years. . Have you had any reaction from a minister or a representative of the Government of Mongolia?
MU: I have been in contact with the Cultural Ambassador of Mongolia in London, her name is J.Unurmaa, and she has supported us with this project and she has told me that she is happy with the release and the good reception that the album has had all over the world. the world, and by 2024 we will be visiting Mongolia, which is positive for SteppenDoom. CR: You are currently part of the Magnetic Eye Records family of artists. Who first knocked on the door? You or the seal? MU: It was all possible thanks to the help of my friend Matt Bacon who is also the co-executive producer of this album and works for the company Dropout Media, which specializes in marketing. I asked Matt what could be the record company that could be fully interested in the project, and he directly recommended Magnetic Eye to me, due to the fact that they released an album with Bulgarian voices years ago. The Doom, Metal and Folk proposal was what caught their attention, so we were able to establish a working relationship, resulting in this release, and in my opinion this label is perfect for SteppenDoom. CR: Many people might consider your project temporary, or are you looking to offer fans around the world more albums in the coming years?
MU: I think I might do one more album in the future, but I'm still not sure if it took me a long time to make this debut album, and I want to make sure that I can work on other projects as well, so for now it's one time, but maybe in the future there will be a second volume. CR: Since you know how to make albums related to a culture, you may have a limited universe to inspire yourself and make other stories. Have you considered making albums of other cultures besides Mongolian in the future? MU: I've been working on many projects, but I'm contemplating making an album dedicated to Japanese culture in the future, since it has also caught my attention, and it's something I'll possibly do later. CR: Now with the album circulating physically and digitally, what's next for the band? Will you focus on doing more promotion, or are you looking at the option of organizing concerts despite the distance limitations of various musicians? MU: Yeah, we're doing a lot of interviews like this one I'm doing with you, plus podcasts, radio interviews, magazines, and reviews across various sites. We hope to get as much coverage and exposure as possible so people can hear this project and appreciate how amazing these throat singers are. CR: What message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this interview and I want to thank you again for the opportunity you have given us to talk about this interesting project such as SteppenDoom.
MU: Thank you Johonny and Conexión Rock Radio for opening the door to this project, which is for all those people who want to hear new things, and I invite you to listen to this album, which is a journey through distant times, cultures and distant sounds, and the most important thing is that through music you seek to discover new things, and that is what SteppenDoom offers, a discovery. Special thanks to Davide Pulito of The Metallist for his help in making this interview possible and to Marc Urselli for the time he gave at home.
