SYLVAINE
SYLVAINE
A Nova Era In Its History If you are a fan of Atmospheric music with influences from Black Metal and Shoegaze, you are cordially invited to check out the next proposal that appears on Conexión Rock Radio, and everything indicates that this release will be one of the most successful so far this year. We move to Oslo, Norway to talk with the beautiful and talented Kathrine Shepard, better known as Sylvaine, who returns in 2022 with her fourth studio album called Nova, which was released on March 4 through Season Of Mist. , and that according to our guest this work is the most personal to her career because it was conceived in the midst of the pandemic where she and her bandmates fell ill, and this would serve as a litmus test to capture this and other experiences in this interesting work. Sylvaine would become known on the scene with her debut Silent Chamber, Noisy Heart released in 2014, and over the years she has collaborated with interesting projects such as Alcest, Autumn's Dawn, and Clouds, and that many in various parts of the world have applauded for being a talented writer and multi-instrumentalist. Sit back, enjoy a drink, some snacks and enjoy this read to Sylvaine's music to the side, and watch a nova era in her history. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Sylvaine, we send you from here our best wishes that everything is well back home and it is an honor to speak with you and share with our readers in Latin America and the rest of the world the important news you have in 2022, welcome!
Sylvaine: Thank you very much Johonny, I am very happy to be here and speak with you at this time for your readers around the world, this is great! CR: On the contrary, thanks for the time you give me back home. I start my interview with you to find out how things are currently in Norway, are there concerts or are there still restrictions? Sylvaine: There are still quite a few restrictions here in Norway, all of this has been very strict in our way, actually these decisions are for the good of everyone not only in my country but in the rest of the world, a few moments ago the restrictions were very strong, but we are still allowed to go out on the street but always on alert and with the necessary care, and we have been living this for quite some time, since it all began, all that was to be locked up in our homes for a long time, although now with vaccines and other advances the whole picture is improving, although always with restrictions. For now we don't have concerts, and we hope that all this will improve so that all this will return to normal before all this big problem happened and maybe hopefully we can return to activities between March and April of this year, but it's hard to say because the statistics for the contagion of Covid and other variants have increased recently, and during these last months they have been difficult in the entertainment, theater, music industry, and we have all suffered equally, we hope that everything improves and we are crossing our fingers for that all this can happen as soon as possible because we can no longer stand this situation (laughs) CR: Now let's talk about good news, at the beginning of February you released their new album called Nova via Season Of Mist, by the way, congratulations, this work will be a candidate for the best of 2022. What reactions have you had from fans and critics both with the first previews as of the same album once released physically and on platform?
Sylaine: Well first of all I have to thank you very much, it's really really nice to hear that every time you release a new record there's always a scare factor because you're sharing stories and personal things that you've done in your life, and it's weird, and Do you question yourself if you could listen to your own personal things when you listen to them and then have to give them to other people? Our fortress is very good at getting feedback and yes, the feedback I got with the first two previews had very positive reactions from people. All this was part of a hard period that I lived between 2020 and 2021 and that I did not have time to sit down to really think about receiving comments and reactions that came massively. I haven't had time to think about what kind of expectations I could expect from this new album, although naturally everyone would think of a positive reaction, but I didn't have any specific expectations, so I felt very overwhelmed by the fact that people were so kind. and I have been quite grateful to have my friends and other people close to me who are the ones who motivate me with their messages to move forward and that my songs connect them with some aspects of their lives. Honestly, it's still like a dream for me that I'll never get used to this because it's beautiful, and I've been very lucky to have very positive feedback to this day about the new record. CR: Everyone thinks that with this album you will go much further and that you will conquer new audiences with your music, how do you feel to see this type of reaction from people who listen to your proposal for the first time and who see this as a discovery?
Sylvaine: This is all just great, I really hope to come back to Latin America soon because the first tour I did was there, but I was there and I did a show in Brazil and Chile, but hopefully and in the future I would love to go and play again. to new crowds and new audiences in Latin America, and I consider this audience to be the best in the world. From all the experiences in the last tours basically many will say the same thing that Latin America is the best audience in the world, and I'm not saying it for me, they say it for other bands that have played in several countries because they are people who are very enthusiastic and welcome the artist with a lot of warmth that was your match when you go there it's like an artist, it's very overwhelming, it's more like wow! from Venezuela and Argentina, Mexico, all kinds of things, it's amazing to see that this my music that I'm making in my room has traveled all over the world. in the world, so I really hope to be back on stage in front of them soon. CR: Nova has several meanings, but the most appropriate is "new" many consider that this album marks the rebirth in the sound of your proposal, what do you think of this?
Sylvaine: Actually, I think the name is quite correct, nobody talks about the feeling of loss and that they are things that are experienced in the transition from one state to another, since we must be aware that nothing lasts forever, and we have always lived in constant changes in the context of our human life and no matter how much we try or understand it, we cannot cling to those things in our lives, and that is extremely difficult to accept and manage at the same time, there are a lot of suffering that comes from the fact that we lose people, we lose things, we lose places, we lose things that have been there during their lives, but as you said, that is when you have the opportunity to be reborn, I have the opportunity to renew myself and open a new door, and that is absolutely true, Nova as a record is definitely something that I was going through during 2019 and 2020 and that affected me when the problems with the pandemic started. I was going through my own personal loss and have experienced some very unfortunate events. The whole world has experienced unprecedented global collective loss firsthand, so it's a bit hard to explain to be reborn, so far there are some people who might not get over those changes yet, and I think because this whole pandemic situation is too new and there are still too many restrictions and rules because people feel oppressed but absolutely Nova is a renaissance the name is actually very funny because the name comes from the first song on the album which is a completely improvised language and not a real language , it's just me making sounds and the two syllables come together to give a different landscape. Simply the name has almost the same pronunciations in various languages, be it Italian, Latin or Portuguese, so it was a perfect choice for this album as it talks about transitions from one state to another. CR: Was it easy or difficult for the band to record the album while you are locked at home?
How do you feel about releasing this new album in an unusual situation like this? No tours, no live shows Sylvaine: When I started making this album, I was thinking about friends who are in other bands that released their albums in late 2019 or early 2020, and when they declared the global pandemic alert I was already resigned that I would not have the opportunity to promote the album or make a tour program, and all that became a nightmare, and I decided to try something to be able to release the album but Covid postponed the recording process several times, unfortunately for everyone the situation got complicated. So I couldn't record the album when we wanted to anyway, and the whole wait was over a year, until 2022 came around and I decided to take the opportunity to release it and I had my fingers crossed that on top of that the concerts could come back in I live, and that this will not happen to more. In summary, Johonny was not an easy process, and Nova in all senses and circumstances was something very difficult, because in addition to writing I had the help of my drummer in which we took advantage of a large number of ideas to shape the songs, for that reason we took advantage of the confinement to be able to send several files remotely and see what could be changed or improved. Artistically everything was a challenge, since when putting together the first songs in the studio we had to wait for everyone to get together and be able to practice, also traveling to France to be able to do the rest of the process was really challenging in general, it was hard for me emotionally Due to the subject of the album, it was difficult in terms of logistics because Covid kept affecting things, and suddenly we all came out infected by the virus. Musicians, producers, including relatives were infected. For that and several reasons, Nova had a challenging process. I think it could have been much worse. I'm not going to complain, it could have been much worse. When we traveled to record no one knew that we were already infected, and when we realized the results that affected us all emotionally and more so for our families, being a vocalist it was really scary to lose my voice for a while while I was in the studio, it was I was supposed to record my album, I was hoping I could do it, you know, make the voice sound good, but in the end it all worked out just finding the right tones so I didn't push myself more while I was sick, and it was a very challenging experience to make this record in these conditions. CR: You recently participated with two songs in a split called Time Without End, are these songs exclusive to that split or will they appear on Nova?
Sylvaine: No, these songs are exclusive to the split, I was actually thinking of doing an EP myself with more acoustic songs because I felt like I really needed to do something simpler with a softer approach. And they wrote to me suggesting doing a Split, and I thought Ok, let's do that now, so this material will only appear in this section, the songs that appear in Nova are new, for those who want to collect this type of material in a certain way they will have something that hasn't been released before. CR: We know that the recording process for Nova was in France, what impressions do you have of working with Benoît Roux and Karl Daniel Lidén in the studio?
Sylvaine: You know, with Benoît I worked with him a couple of times before and from the moment I traveled to France to do the recordings for the album he had a feeling to see how long I could be there in his studio, so he gave me a place. where to stay and be able to do everything without problems. I consider him as a soulmate when we are recording and making ideas around the songs, it was a lot of fun while everything lasted there, and I see that this collaboration between us was really very good, but it does not work because I am the only member of the group, that I was present there, so I spent two months in the studio alone with this guy and it was very important that we were on the same wavelength, so he was really good, he did an excellent job, and I think he really surprised himself same with the album, he made me very happy with the sound, I think he was extremely respectful of all the emotions that I captured in the record, to the point of considering that this was one of the best as far as sound work is concerned, and then I handed everything over to two people to take care of the mixing and mastering and a very good and efficient job was delivered since we wanted the audio quality not to be compromised too much when compressing so that it sounded too loud which was unusual for me, and all the patterns were respected, and when we listened to the album once the process was complete we were very happy with everything and said that this was exactly what we needed, and so Nova is a reality now. CR: For the promotion of the album you recently released two videos: Nowhere, Still Somewhere, and Mono No Aware, many think that there is a delicious balance between clean and harsh vocals, seeing the great acceptance that Nova will have once released, do you plan to release another video promotional?
Sylvaine: Well actually yes, I want to work on at least one video as there are two more songs on the album to select which would be the next one to make videos as I have started talking to a producer about creating something after release because when you're a person who does everything to make everything go well you can see that's a lot, and it's too much to do everything at the same time, so I have to take a break, but I would definitely like to do more videos because I have a relationship of love and hate with videos. I really like the videos but they're really scary to make them there to take time so they can manifest in my mind so I need a little time to do this when I've done it so later on the surprises will come when the new video is ready. CR: For some reason has a song been left out of this new album or is there a bonus for editions from another country like Japan for those who want to collect special editions?
Sylvaine: All the physical versions have the same track list, except for the digital version where you can get extra content and we are planning to do a special edition for various countries with various colored vinyl soon. During the recordings while we were ordering the final list of tracks, one was left out, and the drummer told me that this song literally did not fit, so the best thing is to leave that song as a bonus track and it will be available in the digital version on the different platforms. CR: We know that besides being a talented composer you are also a multi-instrumentalist, what impressions do you have of working with Dorian Mansiaux, Maxime Mouquet and Florian Ehrenberg for this new work? Do they only collaborate with you in the studio or are you looking for musicians for live shows? From the moment people listen to the album they will think that there is a perfect harmony between you and them when performing the songs. Sylvaine: Thank you very much for the comment towards them, in this case as a band it is only me who is in charge of the other instruments and Dorian who is the drummer. So from the moment we make ideas I carry the vocal and guitar bases while Dorian complements them with the drum bases, I consider it as an important part in my career as a stopwatch that takes things in a timely manner, in addition to that he has brought a new level to the sound of the album especially with several ideas in the software part to make improvements and changes with the songs, and I have had musicians throughout these years who have collaborated on the rhythmic base but all have been of entrances and exits, and that has been a constant that I have had to deal with because I have tried to find an alignment where we are all in tune musically speaking, but I know that each musician has completely different tastes. In the case of Max, he is a bassist, but he lives in France and we can temporarily coincide with him on schedules, he also highlighted Florian's work. I am a very lucky person to be surrounded by people who collectively think with goals. If they ask me if you want to work with them again for more albums in the future? My answer would be “yes” because this whole process was easier and more fun thanks to them. CR: Your first contributions were for Alcest, Autumn's Dawn and Clouds, already with 4 albums released, are you satisfied with everything you've done so far?
Sylvaine: That's a very good question. I don't give it often, but that's a very good question, if I'm satisfied with what I've done over the years. I think it's the same for all artists, whether it's a musician, whether it's a visual artist or a writer when you look back especially on things you did in the past, sometimes you like it, or you could have done this better ( laughs), I think you'll always want to do something different if you look back, so what I'm trying to do is not listen to my albums, but I have to admit that it's something I just don't know if you do it, release it and then leave it go and it exists in the world and it's like the property of the world sometimes you can hear it but of course there are things I would have done differently but I think the healthiest way to look at it is to do it for yourself as that is a witness or a testament to who I was back then and over time that would make a difference that you would notice changes that would be made if you recorded an album now. I think it's interesting to see the revolution from time to time and evaluate all your work from those who have participated in different projects and stuff, so I think that being a person who never believed I could do something and music because I had a very high self-esteem low self-confidence when it comes to music it took me many years to believe i could do anything and i'm pretty proud looking back on how it all is and good enough. Maybe not but I change things for sure and I've tried to see this as a witness to who I am growing up and how I expressed myself so I guess I'm okay with things and the people that have been involved with me over the years. CR: The pandemic generated a strong blow in these two years, despite the fact that there are vaccines, people are afraid of getting it again at a concert or on a tour, what is your point of view about people's fear of this?
Sylvaine: In my case I would not blame them, I understand very well what they feel about it, although we know that, at this moment, despite the fact that the world suffered the attacks of the Coronavirus, everything is more controlled despite the fact that we have the Omicron and other variants that seem not to be very dangerous, but if you are vaccinated it makes everything more tolerable, and that will make people trust vaccines and reduce fear. I understand that people don't feel ready to go to a concert because it's after 2 years of isolation. Some people think they need to surf the crowd and other people want to stay home and make sure they're safe and I understand both to be honest and I don't think right now if you've never experienced this kind of thing before it was hard to know if now Will it be the same or will everything change with people's behavior due to fear because they have never experienced a pandemic and that makes sense, but I know that at least we are vaccinated, and we are trying to take measures to make all this safe for us and for our friends, so I think that if everyone does the same we will all be calmer and safer to be able to resume our things in a normal way. CR: Your proposal, in addition to being versatile, can be experimental. I don't know if at some point in your career Sylvaine the fans have asked you to do a special project with your music, for example, do something acoustic? If so, would you launch a Novacoustic in the future (laughs) what do you think of this?
Sylvaine: In previous years there were requests to do something similar, Johonny, they asked me to do a solo show in 2019, and it was the first time they asked me to adapt several of my songs to the acoustic format to offer a more intimate set for people. , the truth is that I really loved the idea of taking all that to a terrain that was new to me. I was planning to make an EP in this format, but consider that this type of project is for a limited audience and might not have enough impact. I will not rule out the idea, only that I will save these ideas for the future, when the conditions for doing something like this are ideal, since in general I do not make plans, and being an artist I look for the best way to express my proposal, I have even thought of releasing it in Earbook format, since adapting a metal song to this format represents an interesting challenge, since you are looking for suggestions of how this or that should sound, within those options something may or may not happen, it's all unpredictable , and I don't want to disrespect the fans, if given the chance to prepare an honest and authentic project instead of presenting something that doesn't work well, and that would imply a risk as an artist. So we'll see what the future holds for those kinds of ideas, but one thing's for sure an acoustic EP could come out at some point. CR: In recent months many bands have used streaming platforms and broadcasts to introduce themselves and get closer to people. Are you in favor or not of this type of format?
Sylvaine: I think at the beginning of the pandemic it was very important for people to have this option, because I think when it first happened everything was closed off to people and that was a big void you know, and for everyone it was a big despair when they didn't they weren't able to do anything outside of their own home, so I think broadcasting concerts was a really good way of trying to interact between the artists and the fans, if you think about it I don't think it's going to last very long because one of the reasons why that people go to concerts is because they want to feel and exchange the energy between the bands and the people gathered there, and you want to live that experience and be part of it, and you don't have the same feeling when you do it in front of the screen of a computer or a phone, so I think the idea is fine when you have to do it. Although we still live in restrictions, these types of online concerts will only be temporary, and it will be the same people who started the culture of in-person concerts returning. I think there is a need for people to be together in events without fear of any kind. CR: With the album released, do you have dates to present it or are you currently focusing on promotion until the time comes to get back on the road? Sylvaine: As you know the music business with the pandemic has complicated things and everything is planned in advance, because when you book or get everything it doesn't happen very quickly. Actually we have plans for several things for 2022, we also have some things for 2023 if we can do these tours a lot of people will be able to see us at various festivals and who knows if time will tell if it is safe for everyone to do it, but at this point it's time to cross your fingers and hope that there is a safe way to do these events, because I think that people need it again and that everyone together feels safe without being afraid, without being restricted and I don't know, I think that people need this kind of energy again I don´t blame them at all for everything we have experienced since the beginning of 2020. CR: At the end of this pleasant conversation, what message do you want to send to all the people who have enjoyed this interview with you Sylvaine, and thank you for the time granted and that this is the first, but not the last interview that we hold with you for Conexión Rock Radio
Sylvaine: Thank you very much Johonny, it has been very nice talking to you and I am very happy to be able to address this opportunity with the listeners of your radio station, thank you very much and please take good care of yourselves because right now the virus and the variants are looking for divide people in every way, we are going through difficult times, and there are things that this pandemic has left us in a negative way and feel like shit (laughs), but everything is going to get better, so stay healthy at home with your families and hold on, that we will enjoy good music again without fear and that everything is normal as before.
