TABAHI
Fatwa, Twisted Minds, Art of War, Virgin Bomber, Hona Hai, Escape From Reality, Thrashbandi, Televised End son algunos ejemplos, al igual que Politricks y Run for Your Life.

TABAHI
Pakistani Thrash Metal That looking Survive or Die Conexión Rock Radio has the honor of introducing all of you to a band that in recent months has become a global trend in the networks, and that in this report you will enjoy a pleasant conversation where we expose its history and its ambitious plans to make Realize world domination through your sound. We got to Karachi, Pakistan, and there we talked with Faiq Ahmed - Guitars, and Daniyal Buksh Soomro - Bass and Voice of the band TABAHI, who shared their impressions of how their proposal was the answer to the clamor of a worldwide community that was asking for shouting something new, seeing in the natives of Karachi literally an oasis in the middle of the desert. Tabahi was born in the violent streets of Pakistan among poverty, inequality and insecurity in 2008, and means "Destruction" in the traditional Lashkari language, and they became known on the local scene with their 2012 EP Fatwa, but the true success would come hand in hand through their self-titled 2014 album, thus making the gaze of thousands look directly at the band and the singles that have raised their popularity over the years, to the point of being signed by a record label that has opted for them to release their second record production that will come out sometime in 2023. We invite you to witness the struggle of three young men seeking to survive or die in these violent streets to offer the world a dose of aggression and brutality. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Faiq and Daniyal, thank you for accepting our invitation to this conversation for our readers in Latin America and the rest of the world, and it is an honor to echo your story and the plans that the band has in 2023, from Thank you very much in advance for the time you give me on this occasion.
Tabahi: Thank you Johonny, it is our first time that we have spoken with someone from Honduras, imagine the great number of hours that separate us from one country to another (12 hours exactly), and thank you for noticing us and bringing us closer to other corners of the world to talk about our music, again thank you very much, despite being midnight at home we are very excited to talk to you. CR: We want to know how things are currently with the metal scene in Pakistan after these years of stoppage forced by the pandemic, have you been able to play there again?
Tabahi: Currently our country is going through a highly unstable situation. As everyone knows, we have suffered from this problem since the 80's and despite the fact that there were intentions to change in the 90's, the situation continued to be the same. And frankly the country is not in a good condition in all aspects, as citizens, and we as musicians whose influences are from German metal make the government look at us with many reservations when it comes to the security aspect for all the inhabitants of the country, which is his priority, but unfortunately and for all the chaos that reigns in Pakistan. An important point should be mentioned for our fans in other countries around the world: living every day in a country like this inspires us to compose music and write songs, we are from a city called Karachi, which is the most violent at a national level, and what has been characteristic of the place is the high rate of crime and robberies that occur almost daily, so for us who love Thrash Metal, seeing this has become a routine that is repeated on a regular basis. frequent. You asked us what if there is a scene in Pakistan? The answer is no. There is no scene that is related to metal so there are very few bands currently playing and that results in no gigs here, sadly we haven't played to a crowd in the last 10 years so you can imagine the magnitude of the problem we have here. Playing here is prohibited because for people this type of music expresses aggression, shouting and a completely hard sound that cannot be tolerated by many who are conservative, people who have come to some concerts usually in small spaces enjoy doing headbanging, but in recent years things have hardened and the authorities have not granted permits to do shows of this type, for that reason we channel that frustration of living day to day in injustice and inequality. For that reason, we get together and make music, we are aware that this will not be a life support, but through our proposal we express our feelings and externalize our negativity. For some, they will say this type of music should never be allowed in a country like this, for us we are young people who play Thrash, and that is the music we love. CR: It´s interesting to see that you have fought to express things as they are despite the fact that you go against the grain and that in the end this can mark you as persona non grata by the government, what is the point of view of the band when dealing with this kind of problems back home?
Tabahi: In Pakistan they consider that everything related to metal is satanic and that it violates family principles, that's why this type of music is prohibited, even though metal breaks all borders we are not allowed to record material. As a funny experience I will tell you that in the last few years when we recorded our videos, we have been attacked by people for making "horrible songs" to the extent that we have scars on our faces. We want to express our society, our community, the place to which we belong, we have always sought to do that, always in our videos we wear our jackets and carry our instruments on our shoulders. In recent months we have received threats from people telling us to stop making music or not to do this or that, to throw our instruments away and to find a more productive job. Making music in Pakistan has been a constant challenge, and people have been in constant discussion to the point that we are persona non grata like you said earlier. We have not harmed anyone, we only express what we feel through music. Being censored or being pointed at is something that we have already assimilated, to the point of seeing this as very common in our city and that people say things is a jargon that we have learned to accept. We have had to deal not only with the community, but also with religious leaders and music as an expression of art is not appreciated in an extremely conservative society, we have discussed with various sectors without falling into provocations and aggression. We are very persistent in moving forward with this project because we have financed doing everything on our own, both the videos that we edit and our recordings, all of which we do in our home studio, and we know that producing something of quality is very expensive. , and that compromises our work to obtain the possible funds, and we try that this aspect does not affect us morally because we would end up disappointed to make a recording or that all this has been done in a very short time. For now we are working on a new video for our new song called Obsidian, and it will be released on our networks and channels in the coming months, with this we tell people that we will not stop at what we seek to do with our music even though in our country there are divided opinions Pakistan is a nation that has a rich history and a varied culture, and our inspiration for making metal makes the new generations pay attention to that sound, and it is there an interesting point where children begin to admire what that many do artistically speaking. CR: Recently the band has released a new single called Kingping, how have you felt with the first reactions that people around the world have of this new material?
Tabahi: We have had a very good response from the entire community around the world, with this it is more than proven that metal breaks any kind of borders. We honestly believe that this new material has met the expectations, especially of a group of young Pakistanis who have grown up with bands like Metallica or Megadeth from America, and from Germany with the big four: Destruction, Sodom, Kreator and Tankard. All those influences we give them a fresher approach without losing that essence of old school Thrash. You can hear all these inspirations in songs like Run for Your Life or Survive or Die where Daniyal's vocals give him a special character, especially in Kingpin where we received very good comments from several countries in Europe, Brazil, the United States , Central America and other parts of Latin America, there have been several ovations towards us to the point of telling us that with our music we have surpassed high caliber bands like Metallica. Perhaps we see something very exaggerated in this (laughs) but we consider that we do not seek to surpass or surpass a band that has worked hard for many years. We do not deny that these bands are our source of inspiration and we are looking for a completely different direction from theirs, we do not make money the easy way because these bands are already companies or corporations that can have funds without problems. In our case, we do our financing through our jobs, and Tabahi seeks to represent Pakistan before the whole world, especially in the global metal field, facing challenges that over the years we have been overcoming, we have learned on our own media to produce our material and edit our videos, we have also known how to manage our social networks. Now with all that it takes for bands to get more presence and exposure they usually look for PR agencies, make contracts and get as much exposure as possible. We do our press releases and send them to magazines and journalists around the world, to do everything on our own we have had the chance to appear in big name publications like Metal Hammer or Metal Injection to mention a few examples, but most importantly that we have received comments praising our work as Jeff Waters from Annihilator, who has reacted to one of the songs from the first album as it´s Democrazy, and Jeff has left us with high recommendations for our proposal, in the same way with our friends from Tesseract from the United Kingdom, thanks to them we have reached new audiences that have been interested in buying our material from different parts of the world, and for this reason we are grateful for all that help. CR: With everything you have done by your own means, you have obtained the recognition you need so that the entire world knows of your existence.
What impressions do you have knowing that your music is reaching places you never thought would hear it? Tabahi: As we mentioned before we are grateful for all the support you have given us despite the fact that many are discovering us now and consider us as a new band we do things with our hearts, since we heard those bands that have inspired us it was enough conviction to follow in his footsteps, especially with Destruction, who has been like our role model. We are very motivated with the good things that have happened, and we promise all of you that we will be launching new things soon, we invite you to stay tuned to our networks when the time comes. We must add that we also have our platform on Bandcamp, and there we put our material at affordable prices for people, either for a song or for an album that can cost you $12, but the singles are free to download. Here in Pakistan we have a big handicap to raise funds due to monetary policies that deny us funds, for example, if someone wants to buy our material and wants to pay it on PayPal, the funds are returned to the person, but we know that there are many people who They are supporting us from various countries and they ask us to release our material physically, but unfortunately we do not have the means to make that possible, and even more so to be able to send this material to very distant points, that would imply high shipping costs. But because of the popularity of the singles we've been releasing recently the people at CDN Records have approached us and are giving us the opportunity to make the material accessible to people, and our next move will be to release an Long Play for August, and this will make everything easier to be able to offer something in physical already in addition to the options that we have in other platforms, so that is the biggest challenge of living in Pakistan, but it is a very busy business, which we avoid let all this unfold in a hasty manner. CR: With all this hype and the expectations that the band has raised in recent months, people around the world are wondering what this LP will be called, which will see the light of day in a few months, or in the best of cases a full-length?
Tabahi: Thanks for asking that question, that's one of the things that really excites us. There is nothing hidden there, and I will tell you that our next album will be called Thrash For Justice. On the one hand, the covid had a strong impact throughout the world, as everyone knows in almost 3 years there were no concerts or tours, and for many there was no way to earn money, but in our case the pandemic was like a kind of blessing disguised by the fact that we had our jobs, and did everything at home for the past two years. A lot has changed since the release of our album in 2014 to this day. Before the pandemic we had planned to release a new album, but with everything that has happened it has literally put any possibility of recording on hold due to work schedules not giving you enough time to go to a studio and record, but at the same time When the pandemic came we had the opportunity to launch new material to people. I'll tell you Johonny that we have a total of 22 songs that are written and ready to be recorded. With any luck that material may appear by the end of 2023 or sometime in 2024. In general terms, people will have fresh Thrash Metal for the month of August, we are in talks with CDN to be able to do a release project of all the material we have saved so far. We will tell you that the LP will be composed of 8-9 songs and the main idea is to give it a strong promotion everywhere. Despite not being able to organize live concerts due to the situations explained above, we have the advantage of keeping our material accessible through the platforms, and hopefully by December of this year we will be revealing several surprises for everyone, so we hope to meet all expectations. with fans all over the world and offer high numbers and good quality Thrash Metal. CR: Something that many want to know is that, in addition to the CD, will there be an opportunity for the band to release this material in another format?
Tabahi: We have spoken with the label to take advantage of this material, the public around the world can listen to it on the platform, once it is released physically it will appear on CD and Cassette, although there is the possibility that it will also appear on vinyl. For us this would be a dream, I will tell you that the patches that appear on our jackets are not available in Pakistan, it took us 2 years to get them thanks to friends who live in other nearby countries and for that reason that is our clothing that we wear in our videos, and that here is not very common in a country like ours. CR: Let's talk about the interesting history of the band, Tabahi was born in 2008, in 2012 you released his first material called Fatwa, and in 2013 you participated in a Black Metal project called Khorne, recording an EP.
Many will say "are there really metal bands in a country like that?" How did the idea of making a band like Tabahi come about? Tabahi: At the beginning of making this project formal we wanted to know if there was the will to move on once all this started, we waited five years to release our first material, after participating in Khorne and recording our first album in 2014 we were convinced of the sound and from the line that we had to follow from now on, we wanted to experience different things on this trip as Tabahi, we listened to different music especially 80's rock. Although there were no schools or music academies, we decided to learn to play the instruments on our own, which is why many people who are related to metal have left the country to pursue their dreams and devote their career abroad. professional, we continue here fighting with a salary that is not paid but we feel that up to now we have done things well at a slow pace, one thing is for sure, metal chooses you by mere destiny, it is something that is born naturally, and sometimes you don't explain how that approach to metal was born. We were tired of listening to cover proposals, and we bet on doing something original on our own, from 2012 to 2013 we were able to do several concerts attended by 20-30 people, and we knew that they enjoyed our show. We were convinced that we should represent Pakistan on the world stage, it was a strong conviction that came from the heart, and that was what we really loved. So we tried to focus our energy on composing original material, resulting in our self-titled album, despite the moment we lived as musicians there were many problems that affected us and that inspired us to make songs that spoke of the reality in which we live as beings. the suicide bombings, living in an extremely religious society meant that we all had many limitations in our lives. We did not sit idly by and through these events they were our source of inspiration to denounce before the whole world the injustices that our country is experiencing. CR: In those days when you released your first album, was it easy or difficult to produce it with the limitations you lived at that time?
Tabahi: The truth was that there were many obstacles at the time of recording the album, we didn't have the slightest idea of how it should sound in a studio, so we decided to investigate what was available in the city and when we found out that we wanted to record Thrash Metal we weren't they stopped recording, they hated that kind of music and wherever we went we got a NO as an answer. So the best thing was to record our songs on our own, first we recorded a demo and then we decided to take everything to our studio that we have at home, we learned how to record and improve the sound of the songs through friends who later helped us to promote the material. Another point that we had to support our families, and with savings and a lot of patience we were able to make a limited run on CD with a really great and simple design that the same envelope can be expanded and you can read the lyrics right there. Adding this whole process, which was a real struggle due to the financial aspect, Faiq, the guitarist is also a graphic designer, we had several advantages to be able to make up the CDs at home, he went to a printer and decided to materialize the idea on A4 format paper. When looking at the results, it was determined that this format would be used for the art and interior design of the first album. CR: Being a Thrash Metal band, you have taken very seriously the context of your lyrics that talk about corruption, injustice, wars and politics.
Fatwa, Twisted Minds, Art of War, Virgin Bomber, Hona Hai, Escape From Reality, Thrashbandi, Televised End are some examples, as are Politricks and Run for Your Life. Something that stands out is that you have made yourself known in a country that is traditionally extremely religious, and that has a great influence on society, during these years have you had any threats or problems with the law, or related boycotts? to censorship? Tabahi: That's right. As we told you before, our career has had constant challenges, not only musically, but also in the artistic part, such as the production of our videos, dealing with these problems has become a daily part of our lives. Rehearsing implies being in an area away from people because if we do this at home many neighbors would come saying that we should stop playing that "satanic music", that we should not continue as a band, that we will expose ourselves to problems, and things like that. We have had the support of our families who have had to face people who are representatives of the government in an attempt to continue with our sound. And to be frank with you, we have been in constant resistance to this type of abuse. In our country there has never been support for rock or metal in any of its variants, sadly all this is strictly supervised, and when there are concerts they seek to analyze the proposals and content that they seek to present to the public. We have nothing against people, we just want them to let us express what we say in our songs, there are many fans who support us openly and others do so from hiding. But as artists we do not receive support of any kind, the doors have been closed to us by radio stations, television channels, magazines and newspapers, ironically, rock and metal in general do not have support, that is the saddest point of living in Pakistan. Years ago we gave an interview to a magazine and we talked about how bad the country was going through and the release of the first album, but especially the suicide bombings, which is why we talked about the lyrics and the context in Virgin Bomber, days later we were notified by mail that due to external pressure the interview was prohibited. For that reason at the local level we suffer this type of censorship. We know that there are people of high influence who somehow seek to silence our voices through decisions that are correct for them, but in general they are, contrary to what these people express through their actions. We are very happy for the support we have had from the metal community around the world, especially from you, Johonny, since you are a person who is interested in us from the other side of the world and who has been able to understand very well with our line of thought with the lyrics and songs, of sharing our vision with the whole world, that is what makes us feel satisfied by this overwhelming reception that they give us from other countries. This motivates us to keep going despite the big problems we face every day. CR: This translates into a very severe cultural backwardness in a country where there is no open freedom of expression.
As you know, many bands decide to go to other countries for security reasons. Have you ever considered leaving your country because of political persecution or fear of being sentenced to jail or death sentences for playing in a metal band? Tabahi: We have always lived in fear, remember that we are inhabitants of the most violent city in the world, we are exposed to death in various ways, the point is to complete the daily work and get home. That has been a constant problem that we have to face, there are friends who don't like our music but have expressed their respect and admiration for everything we have done since we started the band a long time ago. Here maybe we are nobody, but we have managed to get the attention of people from other parts of the world and we got deserved respect, we want Pakistan to be a better country, and we are patriots who do things with our hearts. We know that our ancestors faced the same problem years ago and sought by all means to improve the situation in the country, so we try to be positive that this generation in which we currently live can make some change. We have suffered hatred and persecution in recent years and there have even been many attempts to arrest us and put us in prison. Unfortunately, several media have tarnished the country's image by saying that Pakistanis and Muslims are terrorists by nature. In an interview years ago with CNN we told them that we are not Taliban and that we play with instruments, not weapons. CR: Something that has attracted attention are the videos, especially with Run For Your Life, we see the reaction of the children moshing with you, the band playing in a bus station while someone washes one of them, but the funniest thing It is to see people with a confused face when they see them move their heads to the chord of the song and they would be thinking "what the hell are those boys doing in the street"
Tabahi: That was very true (laughs), everything was filmed in a period of four hours, and the best part there is that we had the buses parked, something that is very famous in Pakistan as a means of transportation, and we wanted to focus all that atmosphere of the best possible way even though people looked at us as weirdos we wanted to overcome that challenge, when we started recording we told people if they wanted to have a good time with us in the video, and at the end of it all an element of surprise was the appearance of children. Since we played the solo part, we saw that they had that strong interaction with us, we asked them how they felt with that type of music or how they felt participating in the video, the response was overwhelming approval. We wanted to bring something different due to the fact that we sang in English and they didn't have the slightest idea what we were talking about, but for both ends during the recording of the video it was entertaining, that's what we received in the comments on social networks saying that we had a great time with the children. At the end of the day it was something very inspiring for us because of the fact that it reflects something that is real and that we experience every day. The reactions have left us with our mouths open, despite the fact that we do not have support of any kind for the aforementioned causes, with this we have guaranteed another step in our career as a band. CR: We want to know if during all these years you have been active, have you had the opportunity to play either tours or festivals outside of Pakistan?
Tabahi: In previous years there were cases where we had the opportunity to perform live, especially when we released our debut in 2014, one of those good experiences was in Nepal. Despite being a small country, it has a strong fan base that loves metal, and we participated in a festival and many people came up to us to congratulate us on what we were doing, there were people from neighboring countries like India for example who they went home with a very good impression of us. Despite the fact that we are neighboring countries, we have lived with limitations to be able to perform in other places, if a festival calls us they give us the place, but we must put our tickets and all the expenses involved in moving from our homes to that festival. That is impossible because we do not have a budget to make long trips and most of the invitations to festivals happen in that same case. But now things have improved a bit and fortunately we have had the opportunity to play for many people, we have received requests to organize tours in various countries in Europe and Latin America. It is very curious that a band from Pakistan goes on tour to places that we would never think of going in our life. This is simply a matter of a lot of work and time to be able to achieve an objective like that, especially because of the issue of passports, which is the most complicated part of leaving the country. Once that is achieved, we believe that we will have a free hand to be able to play other countries without problems. Also, governments do not trust people when they ask for tourist visas, that is a perfect way to flee and not return to that horrible country (laughs). Many would say, who wants to go back there? CR: With CDN Records as the contact was, who knocked on the door first? It´s curious and interesting at the same time that a label from far away pays attention to you and that from there begins to support you, especially with this new album that will be out in a few months.
Tabahi: The people of the label have treated us in the best way in the professional aspect, when we were with the project of preparing new material and therefore offering the singles, and we had the intention that the song would have a strong reach in the networks We know that in the turns of life, seeing the good reception they have had, we could expect at least 100,000 visits, or perhaps later break the gap of 1 or 2 million reproductions, we just wanted our music to be there, and the result that Run For Your Life went viral. When we released it between September and October 2022, suddenly our video appeared on a page and that caught the attention of the label and they communicated with us expressing the great potential we had with our music. Hearing about that communication was inspiring for everyone, it was a goal that we fought for years, and we are very grateful to everyone because we are giving a clear signal that we are not going to stop. CR: What's next for a band like Tabahi that is beginning to shine with its own light on the scene?
Tabahi: In the next few days we will be revealing new surprises, one of them is a video that will appear on our networks and platforms called Obsidian where we reflect on all the obstacles that many have put in our way to stop us, and we are also preparing another where we address a different sound and that we talk about a person who is considered a saint within Pakistani culture, and who has taught many within the different practices of Islam, and who has served as a source of inspiration for many. That for us is like a kind of tribute, and we hope that it will be liked by people once we release it, because we went to a sanctuary to make that video, which will make the experience for the fan who sees the video more special. For now, we will take a break because in our country we celebrate Ramadan, which is considered a holy month where prayer, reflection, fasting, and union with the community are the strong points, and no one will eat during the month that This activity lasts, in the same way we will be participating in days of prayer that begin in the morning and end in the afternoon. CR: At the end of this interview, Faiq and Daniyal, what message do you want to send to the people who enjoyed this reading with you, and thank you for the time you gave us to make this interview possible there in Pakistan, you deserve the best, and We hope to see them shine with their own merits in some important festival around the world
Tabahi: First of all we want to thank you Johonny for getting closer to us even though we are thousands of kilometers away from each other, we have no words to express our gratitude to you and to the rest of the people who follow us from various parts of the world, we hope as you say that they take us into account to play at a festival like Wacken, Hellfest or Download, it would be a dream come true, and we could say that making that a reality is like consecrating the career of three Pakistani youth who are starting from the ground up, who have learned to do things their own way, and thanks to that motivation have kept going despite the multiple attempts to stop our career we are still here for the fans of Thash Metal, we hope that In the not too distant future our visas will be approved and we will be able to make this and several pending goals possible. We are working hard to be able to offer something of very good quality for everyone, waiting only for the right moment to launch new things and we invite people who start to know us to enjoy our music, leave their comments on our networks and Give your opinion of what we are doing from our country, and most importantly we are grateful to our families for the unconditional support they have given us both in good times and in bad, and thanks to metal journalists around the world for echoing of our message and share a journey through our culture. Thanks again Johonny, and a hug to everyone from Pakistan! Stay Metal! We thank Tabahi for the time granted in this interview, and we express our good wishes for them to continue their struggle in a country that needs justice, peace and freedom like Pakistan.
