TERRIBLE SICKNESS
An Insatiable Odyssey If you are a lover of Brutal Death Metal and Grindcore, we present you a proposal that seeks to break through in Latin America, and that Conexion Rock Radio shares with all of you, and especially those who like the extreme sound of its history and plans that seek to make it come true coming soon. And we made it to Hanover, Germany, where we spoke with the band Terrible Sickness who are back in action after a long silence promoting their most recent album called Flesh for the Insatiable, which is their third discography release, and which saw the light last November 18, generating good reviews and comments from their fans congratulating the band for this new step in their history. Our guest on this occasion is Eike, Bassist and Vocals of the band who shares interesting details about the reception of the album and how Terrible Sickness has returned to play on stages and organize tours in various parts of German territory after the pandemic that has hit the world since 2020, of the concept that they offer us with Insatiable, and of the evolution that they have had over the years, and that he shares this new adventure with his bandmates Peter Heitzer- Drums, Karsten Schmidt- Guitars, Florian Scheibke- Vocals , and Jens- Guitars. Get comfortable, play music from Terrible Sickness, get out the beers and enjoy An Insatiable Odyssey of extreme metal that is ready to be heard all over the world. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Eike, thank you for accepting our invitation to talk on this occasion and share with our readers and fans of the band what Terrible Sickness is currently doing and the surprises that you have coming soon.
Eike: Hi Johonny, thanks for the opportunity you give us to do this interview, and we greet all the fans who know us from Germany and the people who discover us, we welcome them to listen and enjoy our proposal. CR: Thanks Eike, and I'm starting this interview to find out about the news that the band has when returning to tour and concerts since the pandemic took over the world in 2020, how do you feel about playing again for the people there? in Germany? Eike: We are currently in a planning stage for our schedule for the beginning of 2023 where we want to appear at festivals and be headliners for our tours in various cities, for now we are closing the year with two shows which will take place in small venues , and we have high expectations of being able to play for as many people as possible, but as a band we are very happy to be back on the road again, and it only remains to hope that the moment is the right one to play and offer what we have in our hands. CR: Let's talk about the release and reception of Flesh for the Insatiable, this is the band's 3rd album that came out last November 18 through Black Sunset, are you people who are committed to your fans to exceed expectations or expect reactions from fans around the world once they have heard the material in physical and on platform, what impressions have they had with this new release?
Eike: Regarding the expectations, I will tell you that we feel very good with the comments we have had so far, the fans comment that we have made an album that is very close to Feasting on Your Perdition (2017), and the first reviews we They have been applauded for doing something very good and brutal at the same time. People on social networks have given us very positive comments, and this is a sign to prepare very well for the concerts that will be organized soon, since many want to hear these songs live, and I can only say as part of the band that this new record has been very well received. CR: Speaking of Feasting on Your Perdition, did you join the band in 2017 or was it around the time they were on tour promoting the album, any details you can share?
Eike: I temporarily joined the band in the middle of 2016 when they were on tour, since Hendrik Burghardt, his bassist, was very sick, he had cancer and for that reason he couldn't play with the band at that time. Unfortunately things got worse for him and he passed away in August of that year, days later the band invited me to be their bassist permanently as a gesture of gratitude for the help provided in all those months. And from that moment until today I continue to contribute things to the band in this part of its history. CR: Something curious here is that both you and Jens have another band in which you work simultaneously, such as Putrefaction. This is their first album in which both participate in the studio. How do you feel about being part of the Terrible Sickness lineup contributing ideas to improve the sound of the band? Eike: Being part of a band that is already beginning to consecrate its career is something that you should take seriously with people who handle everything very well from a professional perspective, they are a band that have gained a very good reputation in all these years since the beginning. underground circuit, and working with them is a very interesting experience. Many might think that playing in a band like this in your rehearsal room would be seen as a hobby, but then you feel that there is pressure to be able to do very well on stage, especially when you have the support of a record label that believes in us. as is Black Sunset, which by the way we thank you for all the help in making the release of this third album possible, which, as you said, Johonny, is our debut, both mine and Jens', despite spending some time with the rest doing tours and contributing new things. Participating and being part of an album that took five years to take shape makes you have a greater commitment to the people who follow you, and at the same time to be part of a sound that we are improving over time. Seeing all of that for me and Jens makes it all very good on a personal and collective level. CR: It's very interesting that people have been able to respond to this release and that critics have given their thumbs up. In the case of Flesh for the Insatiable, was it easy, difficult or did you get more ideas when you entered the recording studio?
Eike: In my case, this whole process for the new album was completely different, as everyone knows, Covid attacked the world and that meant that as artists we couldn't meet or rehearse for many months. Some time later, when the restrictions were relaxed, we had the opportunity to all be together again in our room rehearsing, although we previously had many ideas and we were able to exchange things over the phone and by mail so that when we had the ideas ready, we could enter the study and shape the songs that would appear on this album. With Jen we have a friendship of 15 years and alternating with Putrefaction makes our ideas when composing easier in a fluid back and forth, for example, I have a riff and Jens has others that improve it, by putting the ideas together new things come out there. All this time at home, far from being boring due to confinement, made us have more creative ideas and be able to continue with the process until we were ready. For me composing at home was natural, only because of the circumstances in which we all lived in those months made the way of working different. Before the pandemic we had many ideas saved, so to improve them everything was done in our rehearsal room as a way of improvising things, the rest was just to improve and compose new ideas. CR: Here the production has been one of the strengths of the album, giving it strength and character in each of its songs. What impressions do you have of the work that Emil Richters (guitarist of the band Controversial) has done as producer on this new album?
Eike: Working with Emil makes things easier for the band. This is his second album as a producer, so I can say that he has done an excellent job supporting us in the studio with his equipment and contributing ideas of how the instruments should sound. We had the time to experience new sounds, in addition to the fact that he provided us with his recording studio at an affordable price since, as you know, many bands have had problems paying their budgets to record thanks to the pandemic that has left numbers in the red and that otherwise it would complicate things more. Emil gave us good advice on how to take advantage of the sound we wanted to find when recording the songs, I consider that what we did has been a step forward in relation to the previous album. We just arrived and Emil took care of doing the rest, and from there we focused on seeing how everything was developing as if a father was waiting for the birth of his son so that you get an idea of how we felt from the moment we entered the studio until finish the last mixing and mastering sessions. Once we had advanced in everything, we already had a perception of how the album would sound at that time, and when we had the final product we felt very proud of what we had done, it sounds too good, and there you can appreciate the balance of how they are heard all the instruments, we are very happy with what he did on this new album and we hope to continue counting on Emil for more work in the future. CR: In addition to the audio that is a complement to an album we also have the cover, which is the work of Timon Kokott and Dabart, we want to know if they designed the cover or was it an idea of both parties?
Eike: It was an idea from both parties, the truth is, the illustration was directly based on making an oil painting with some digital touch-ups and giving it that old atmosphere. When Dabart asked us about the name of the album, he had an idea of how he could capture all of that in a cover, so we gave him enough creative freedom so that he could surprise us without putting any pressure, although that process took about three years to finish, because he did this as a hobby and not as a way to earn life due to the commitments he had in those days with his work, family, obligations and other things he was able to finish the cover between periods of time, and once he presented us with the final cover we were very pleased with his work, we had that feeling Due to the complexity of the illustration, it reminded us a lot of covers like Iron Maiden, for example, from Somewhere In Time or Acts of the Unspeakable from Autopsy, and it seemed that those covers they were like little monsters that talk to you, and appreciating all those details for Flesh for the Insatiable was a great reason to recognize the work that was done for that record, it was something that took a long time but ended up being a worthy result for it to be the cover of the new album. CR: For this album that the band offers us at the level of ideas, is it conceptual?
Eike: I can't define this album as something conceptual, since there are too many ideas, all of them different from each other and locked in a hole. All of us in the band would reject doing conceptual things as there have been attempts to do something, but they have been left behind on one side of the road, and we believe that doing works of that kind would not fit our proposal because they have very diverse themes. If we made conceptual albums in our career, I think we would sound the same from one album to another or with slight variations to follow a thread that seeks to narrate or expose one or more stories. It's like if you record an album and Death Metal, Grind, Melodic Death, Heavy or Thrash Metal songs appear, that wouldn't work with us, I think it would be a nightmare for the band and the producer to do that kind of thing (laughs). because they are all different styles and sounds, in this album there are no concepts, they are just loose stories that seek to attract the attention and interest of whoever listens to us. CR: Many consider that this new album is a strong point in their discography, and it is a fact that Insatiable can reach new audiences. How was the contact between the band and the Black Sunset guys?
Eike: We made contact with the label and we took care so that the contract had the conditions that both sides could reach an agreement, which to our joy they accepted and welcomed us into their catalog of artists. Before taking that step, we sent some demos, and the following days we received communication from your staff that they liked the songs very much and that they offered us dignified treatment as artists. For the band it was a very important step in our career since they have believed a lot in betting on the production and release of the new album, and now this is one more testimony in their growing history. CR: Being your part of the band in its current incarnation, what is your point of view about the evolution that Terrible Sickness has had during all these years on the national and international scene? Eike: What can I say about it... we are a band that has not stood idly by waiting for success to arrive at our doors, we have started from the ground up and have a highly respected reputation within the underground circuit, and with this new album we have It has brought out a great potential that we have known how to take advantage of by breaking some established molds, giving a true and sincere image when expressing what we think through our lyrics. In recent years there have been requests for us to play in the United States, or play in cities like Milwaukee, it would be something special to play there, but I am realistic in my opinion that for now that dream can come true for now. We have closer options to perform in several cities in Germany, also in the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria or Belgium, which are relatively closer points and we have more possibilities to do concerts and participate in festivals. I am not leaving the door closed, but it would be a simple matter that the promoters are interested in us and being able to organize a considerable number of dates in the United States, with some work and strong promotion I think that in the end it could be possible, in the same way to do new experiences in various places in South America and Asia. CR: Currently with three studio albums out, have you had any requests to release a live album in the future?
Eike: Actually we have a material that was recorded live in 2017, for various reasons we have not been able to release it, but from the moment we heard the recording and how it captured the energy of the band and the people we think that this is great and deserves to be published, in those days we had a tour with a tight schedule and we didn't have a chance to listen to everything at once when we came back home or came back from vacations. Are we happy with that material? The answer is yes. We just wait for the right moment to give a better treatment to those records and be able to offer them to people with better quality and to appreciate the band in its natural state. CR: With this new album already out and infecting the world with your sound that's now on for Terrible Sickness, any more promotion? Videos? Or are they expecting to hit the road at the beginning of 2023?
Eike: We recently released our video Winds of Extinction, and it will serve to support the promotion of the album on the YouTube platform and on various channels around the world, in the same way we released a behind-the-scenes short. It was interesting to do this because this is our first video and we wanted all of that to come naturally and not overdo it at the time of shooting. You just want to play the song and be in good shape for the other shots in different locations. At the end of the day you end up dead from the sheer amount of effort you put into making it all right, and we're happy with all of this so far and look forward to more surprises in the coming weeks. CR: At the end of this interview Eike, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this interview, thank you for the time granted at home, and we hope to talk later about another chapter in the history of Terrible Sickness
Eike: Thanks to you Johonny for having me here, and to the people who have read at the end thank you for supporting us, enjoy the album, support us by buying our material, and we hope in the not too distant future to be able to reach your countries and play for you. Special thanks to Davide Pulito from The Metallist for his help in this interview, and Eike for the time granted on this occasion.
