The Black Dahlia Murder
The Black Dahlia Murder
Dawn of the Rats Under a Sunless Empire Conexion Rock Radio in their international interviews offers lovers of Melodic Death Metal to one of the exponent bands of the genre, and that has many fans around the world, and that in this special report we will share with all of you the important moment that this band lives in 2020. We refer in this case to The Black Dahlia Murder, who return through the front door with their new production called Verminous, and which will go on sale worldwide on April 17 via Metal Blade Records. On this occasion, we spoke with their Vocalist Trevor Strnad, who provides details and expectations that the band has in this new chapter in its history that is complemented by Brian Eschbach and Brandon Ellis- Guitars, Max Lavelle- Bass, and Alan Cassidy- Drums. Below, we share with all of you this pleasant and interesting conversation with Trevor: Conexion Rock Radio: Trevor, greetings from Honduras, Central America, it is an honor to have you here in this special interview where we will know about the next news that a great band like The Black Dahlia Murder has for their fans this year, welcome! Trevor Strnad: Hi Johonny, thanks for inviting me, a pleasure to chat with you and your readers! I tell you that I'm locked up here in New York, things are getting very bad here, there are many infected people, so you're just lying down or listening to music at home. Luckily I've been doing a lot of interviews to keep myself mentally busy, it's getting scary, this is definitely weird, so obviously I've never been through something like this. I'm just trying to stay positive and focus on the new album coming out and hope that this gives people a reason to get excited. CR: Start this interview in congratulating the band for their new album called Verminous, which will be released in mid-April via Metal Blade Records.
What expectations have The Black Dahlia Murder in this new chapter of its history? TS: I think this will be a great album for us, it is a special album. I think he is very creative and he will have several songs that will be hymns. You know, we try to make the songs so epic that they make a big impression on people, we look at this album as something very special to the band and we're all really excited about what we put together here. CR: If Nightbringers was a highly acclaimed album by critics and fans, with this new work the band seeks to excel in all aspects, the production has been a highlight.
Everyone thinks that the album's name is somewhat prophetic due to the worldwide emergency that we are currently experiencing. It´s conceptual or we have several stories? TS: There is a bit of a concept in a couple of songs, but in itself the idea is to make it related to the underground that lies in the world, like rats that are a plague like cockroaches and all those undesirable little creatures that They have caused a plague to spread, and you know rats and roaches are creatures that people don't want in their perfect world. And much is said that the creatures that will survive when man destroys the planet with nuclear war will be cockroaches and rats will survive. There are many songs that speak of terror like a Vampire waiting for someone to rip the stake out of his chest and get things going their normal way. So are our songs that have a main focus and I really enjoy writing for the band after all these years, it is still a lot and it is a challenge to honor the music, especially as the band keeps improving and improving. You do your best to return the bar at the vocal and composition level. This is a huge leap of evolution on this album, I feel like with Nightbringers it was the beginning of a new era for us, with Brandon Ellis entering the band, and I think his presence is felt even more on this new album, it really gave him his creative stamp on things. CR: Everyone thinks that the name of the album has a very prophetic tint, especially due to the emergency that we are currently experiencing. Have you had any comments about it? TS: When we were in the studio with the whole process we had no idea about all this coronavirus and what was going to happen later and in the end everything was a strange coincidence, it is a kind of terrifying prophecy, it reminds us that pandemics are imminent and the idea of spreading the plague. Directly or indirectly people will think that the album comes at an opportune moment with what is happening and they will pay more attention to what has been done in the general context for Verminous. CR: We know that the album was produced by the band and that it includes the participation of Ryan Williams, who played with you years ago as bassplayer, in addition with Tue Madsen and Alan Douches.
What comments do you have about their participation in the studio? TS: We've worked with Ryan Williams, he's worked on almost every album we've done in the studio, and this time he was a little less involved this time around, he recorded the drums and did a great job, but then Brandon took the reins, You know he recorded most of the album in his home studio, we've also had contact with Madsen for a long time and considering that he has a lot of references working on Death Metal albums, and he has that classic sound that we really like. This is our second consecutive album working with Tue, it has given it a very European sound, considering that most of the influences come from the classic European Death Metal scene and some elements from Gothenburg Metal, that helped us hit very loud having a clear sound, and we have had the goal in recent years to make more classic sound discs instead of modern ones, I feel that modern metal has gotten to the point where we look like robots, to record everything with the click and the music it would have no personality, so we decided to go the other way. We know we like it, we maintain a natural sound, we don't over edit the drums, replacing everything with mechanical things is a big mistake, and changing the tone of the instruments loses that essence. Our approach seeks to recover the personality that those records that were made in the 90s and early 2000s, and that brings a little individuality to an overview, I think that is what many records lack today like his own tones, his own personality and it would sound more cautious in a way, it would just take longer to record an album that you don't fix the drums, and it takes even longer to just cut and paste in the studio, and that trend in The last few years has made everything so easy to do, and I understand why people have gravitated towards it, but the end product ends up sounding more fake, more boring and more typical, so we wanted to have something that sounded like it was recorded in the early 2000s or mid-90s, which is why we use the old forms of recording. CR: When the first singles were released, the sound and the way of playing on the instruments feels that vibe that they did everything naturally without using other processes that would feel that it was mechanical or forced
TS: That's right, we try to always incorporate different elements in each album, combining nuances ranging from extreme metal and even classic heavy metal with this album, we are always trying to inject new life into the band, but also keep the sound recognizable Black Dahlia Murder, we have two sides of a single coin, it is between combining the old and the new, I think there will always be technical ideas within the band that keep things fresh and modern. I think we have become better musicians over the years and better songwriters at the same time, and this will continue to be the same Black Dahlia formula that he has implemented for years, to be more thoughtful when we are creating things in the studio. CR: A curiosity about the new album. We know that they released it in several versions: CD, Vinyl and Cassette, in the limited edition two bonus tracks appear: Their Thwarted Patience, and surprisingly Go To Hell by Megadeth (track that appears in Hidden Treasures), what motivated you in make this cover in particular?
TS: With Megadeth it was my first Metal band to listen and from there it was love at first listen, I also discovered other bands at that time like Metallica. It was school days, especially in sixth grade when I got home and saw the Synphony Of Destruction video, and that basically marked my way in listening to metal. Then when I saw the movie Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey I was fascinated by the version that the band contributed on their soundtrack, which years later would appear in this compilation of Sides B, and tribute covers, you know that Megadeth is one of those bands , but I think it is very difficult to interpret, they have a lot of attitude playing that and their musicians are very virtuous, so I think it is a real statement from Brandon and me personally to be able to play that song, so it´s a great challenge and in the end we end proud of what we did in this version. CR: Without a doubt Hidden Treasures has very good songs from the classic time of the band, tracks like Angry Again or 99 Ways To Die showed the capacity of Mustaine & Cia in those years.
TS: Strongly agree, there are other songs like Breakpoint that overflows with genius. I am really a fan of the Rust in Peace or Countdown to Extinction line-up, they have incredible albums, and they have marked a part of my life. I liked drawing pictures of their faces in the notebooks, you know, I collected all of their shirts, I had 14 to start with. I used to wear a T-shirt every day at school, and they would make fun of me saying "Mr. Megadeth", I didn't care about that because it was like a form of devotion to the band that would literally change my life. CR: This is your 9th work with Metal Blade Records.
How does the band feel to be part of one of the most important labels in the world? You have a whole history with MB TS: That's right! We have been very fortunate to have such a dedicated label behind us and put so much energy into our band from the beginning, I think Brian Slagel saw real potential when he heard the band in the early days and he knew we were very passionate, and We were going to take this opportunity to the extreme, and we are proud to be part of a label that has put on the map many legendary bands like Metallica, Slayer, Cannibal Corpse, Broken Hope, Immolation, or Vader to mention some examples. Metal Blade has made an important contribution to the image and evolution of Death Metal as such, seeing the logo of the label on our albums gave that feeling of honor and belonging. We have had an excellent working relationship over the years and we celebrate when we see them, hugs, those five, and I feel very fortunate to have a seal all this time and that means a high level of trust and respect with Metal Blade to this day, and it's a great experience to be with them. CR: Many fans want to know what the band's fascination has been, especially that it refers to a murder case.
How could you evaluate the musical evolution of the band since their first days until to this Verminous that many consider as a fierce contender in the band's discography, what do you think of it? TS: I'm glad to hear you say that. I think it is a special album for us. We currently have a perfect lineup and we are living a very creative moment, and we have a great environment to work and create several albums. With Nightbringers it was very exciting for and especially for Brandon who has been in the band long enough to be more comfortable working with us and creating all this stuff. It has literally grown creatively with this album, we did not have a plan about it, since we did not talk about what we are going to do with the album, but I think that in recent years we have tried to make the songs leave a great impression to make them more powerful with bigger dynamics. You create song composition options that are smarter and generally involve more creativity. But we know that we have tried to circumvent this line of being the same band that we were, to prove that it worked and that it did not, we want to be recognizable from the first notes of making more epic songs and hymns, and give more weight to the songs, more power and more color, so I feel very excited to make the rest of the album come out like this to the public because it was difficult to choose the singles because there is so much variety between the songs that you can really summarize that the album was only two songs to start a good promotion, so people need to listen to the whole album to see what we've done because there are so many different ideas and approaches that you know of, but it feels like something very creative on the album and we're all very proud of it. CR: Is there any formula in the band to make very good albums like this?
Everyone thinks that there are no underrated works in their discography, albums like Nocturnal, Ritual, Everblack, they are all classic works in every way. Comments ... TS: It is very flattering, we try to have a high bar and be the best band, and especially as people. There are albums that many look at as favorites, and there will always be comments that this is better than the other, it is like saying that there are fans who like Nocturnal, and others with Ritual, others will say that the best may be Nightbringers, and with everything that we have made from our first album to this new one is a sample that we have given the best doing different things without making a copy paste of everything, we are very fortunate, and we seek to provide musical directions to exploit that creativity that we need to make better songs with more technique both in structure and composition. And that has been a formula that has worked, but as we grew musically we have gained more experience in the small details, such as the rhythmic and time parts, for example, there are moments on this album where it becomes very simple and very open, and the songs breathe a little bit, you know, and I try not to sing as much as on other records and give music more room to breathe, and I think it has made the songs have a more lasting lasting impression this time around CR: We know that you are a collector and that you like to listen to bands from all over the world.
Have you had the opportunity to listen to any Central American band? TS: Of course, there are a lot of great bands in your region, the scene is clandestine, as it is always rampant with incredible bands and I listen to some through platforms or bandcamps, you know that one of the best decisions for me was really it is interesting to see These bands grow and break established stereotypes or leave their countries both on tour and their music goes far, it is a trend that is handled in all cultures, from rich to less fortunate countries, we have heard several of them by comments from other bands and festivals, what I think is that this scene deserves more attention and recognition, it may be that in the future several bands from Central America can give us surprises and it will be where many look at a region that is a potential laboratory where they will come out interesting stuff. CR: Many young bands look at Dahlia as an influence, what do you think about it? TS: It's flattering, you know it's exciting to have people inspired by your band and you like to do different things within your sound, and that they admire us means that we are surviving different generations and that we work to influence certain corners of the music scene. a way that is very flattering, and you know that is a great compliment. I don't really feel threatened by other bands that are following in our footsteps, you know I feel very honored by that and it's just great, that means hopefully we'll be here as long as it takes and especially by the fans. CR: With the imminent success that this new album will have in doors, do you have plans to record a tour on CD or DVD? We know that the band has previously released Fool 'Em All in 2014, and Majesty in 2009, and many say that the band is better playing in the studio than live and vice versa, what is your opinion?
TS: We are more of a live band at heart, I think we put a lot of energy into being the best live band, and that has been proven in the tours that we have done in these years. We are not sure when we approach these types of projects and all the technical details involved in carrying equipment and capturing the desired atmosphere, but when you play live you feel like your blood is pumping, and it is a special feeling. About making a DVD, I think that in these times trends have changed a lot, I think that due to social networks it has generated changes, now all concerts are broadcast by streaming or by platforms, it is not like before you went to the store and You bought the DVD or made a pre order to have it before, it is already a losing battle to get that, you know. There are several contents that we try to publish it on Facebook, and we try to tell them that we try to be very related to social networks during all this time. Now it's all about downloading it directly or looking for extra content on YouTube because a lot has changed since we edited Majesty, we were very successful with this video. Although people prefer the lineup of those days than today when we made jokes and had good time in those days, although there are many differences from that lineup to the current one and all that involves sacrificing your life, and unfortunately, it is a great tension in your personal relationships, living in things that do not help you in anything positive. A lot of dedication is required in your daily life, and I understand that priorities and people change, you know, and I'm not angry, I used to be angry in the early days when people left the band and used to hold a grudge and take it so personally, but now I understand that people change, and also when you go on tour sometimes it is a good experience and sometimes not, you get up very early, you stay up very late, you are flying every day when you are on tour, or when there are a heavy interview schedule, it can be very exhausting and very unforgiving, so I understand why people are gone and there are a lot of difficulties being in a band that supports stress, character or a lot of bullshit honestly, so for that reason I have thought with a cool head about all this, and from the former members we are still friends and I am very grateful for all those who have played in the band, but for me, my dream is going to change, this has been the most It's amazing of my whole life, the most important chapter of my life. And I feel that we are honoring this initial opportunity with Metal Blade to give the best we can to a more hard-working band and to have better attitudes and mentalities on a personal and professional level. CR: Once the new album is on the streets, are there any touring plans for Europe and America once the Covid 19 emergency ends?
TS: Yes, we are starting to plan the next two or three years on tour, which will be very active for us and yes, the coronavirus has screwed us all up. Our plans at this moment is to reschedule the tour that we had with Testament for the month of April, unfortunately as we all know Chuck, his Wife and colleagues from other bands came out positive, just like Steve Di Giorgio, and we have been aware of all of them, since That for us Testament is one of my favorite bands, and with his new album already on the streets, we hope that people will give them enough support that they need. For now in Europe we will have to wait until we return to play in outdoor festivals and that everything returns to normal, which I hope will do soon, also from our friends from Municipal Waste who have been facing this disease in the running of the bulls, and the world scene in addition to the canceled bands and festivals are a great financial blow for all of us who really suck, just like people like you, the press who have been contributing their own things and who are struggling with many limitations, people without jobs, and this has A big negative effect, or sometimes the gangs go bankrupt or end up breaking up over the financial issue. The only thing left in this case is to make time productive with various ideas while the emergency disappears from the world. CR: What message would you like to send to those who read us in this special interview? I want to thank you for the time you have given us this day for Conexion Rock Radio.
TS: I am grateful to talk to you on this day Johonny, it was also an interesting interview, we hope to see you soon on a tour.
