Temuulen "Temka" Naranbaatar – Tovshuur (Laúd), y Coros.
Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Gala, it is an honor to be able to carry out this interview for our readers from Latin America and other continents who want to know about the next news that The Hu has this year, welcome!
Gala: Hello Johonny, good morning from Mongolia, the time difference separates us many hours (noon in Central America and early the next day in Mongolia) we are very happy that people from the other side of the planet speak with us, and especially celebrating the launch of our new album. CR: How have you felt as a band to play concerts and festivals again after these two and a half years of absence, especially with new material under your arm? Gala: Since we released our first album we have had the opportunity to perform in incredible places, our proposal of voices and arrangements has been able to reach many more people than we as a band would ever expect, seeing people's faces at festivals It was an experience you don't get every day, and now we're getting ready shortly to go on tour with Five Finger Death Punch and Megadeth, so we've been able to expose ourselves to different types of audiences and we've seen that people appreciate us so much in the artistic as well as the musical, and seeing these kinds of opinions makes it possible for us as artists to grow and learn from people. CR: Let's talk about Rumble of Thunder, the second album that The Hu released on September 2 through Better Noise Music, by the way, congratulations, for lovers of folk metal and especially those sung in another language, you will find in this new material very interesting stuff. What reactions have you had from the people who have listened to the album both physically and on platforms?
Gala: We are very excited about the great positive response that the album has had from different parts around the world, and especially about the first advances that we offered months ago. We have put our best effort into each of the songs we have recorded, although in the process we had the need to record some things two or three times to be satisfied with the final result, we felt that we had left our soul and heart there, and at the end the sessions to listen to the album in its final form have made us feel proud of the work we have put into this project, and now that people have responded very well to the album, it has managed to fulfill what we were looking for, to generate a very good impression , and for that reason we are excited to fulfill those expectations. As a surprise on our platform we have released two videos: Black Thunder and This Is Mongol, when the album was released that day we presented a new video as a gift for fans and that corresponds to the song Bii Biyelgee, and we hope you can enjoy this as part of the promotion of the new album. CR: Without concerts or tours in these two and a half years, how did the pandemic influence the composition of this album?
Gala: Talking about Covid was a very dark episode in modern history around the world, and we were all very affected, bringing negative consequences in all aspects, in our country it was no exception, we live in times of very strict confinement and mobility in several cities it was null, only ambulances and vehicles authorized for emergencies were allowed to circulate. So the best thing was to take advantage of the confinement to record, push ourselves and give our best from the beginning to the end of the process, in this way the studio became our confinement zone for a long time, and in the end we achieved this album that people can now enjoy the new material in various parts of the planet. CR: For this new album the band once again has the work of B. Dashdondog as producer, what experiences did you have with him in the studio? Was it more ideas? More pressure?
Or was it a process that everyone felt comfortable with? Gala: First of all thanks for that question, what you say is very interesting, I must tell you that in this case Dashdondog as a producer has helped us a lot to create our style, and through his advice we have been able to enrich the songs we have made in these two albums. Hearing our proposal for the first time, he proposed that we work together to make a new genre which would be called "Hunnu Rock", when we released The Gereg which was our first album we knew the direction we were going to take from there, and everything that is the result of a lot of work between both parties to make ideas continuously, this is how this new album would come, and we seek to forge our style for more releases in the future. CR: In The Gereg for the Deluxe edition you had the collaboration of Jacoby Shaddix, From Ashes to New, and Lzzy Hale. For this new album, will the band have collaborations for a special edition? Gala: That's right, we have a list of artists with whom we want to work, but for now it is very premature for the moment in which we are living with this new release, we seek that for an edition that could come out a little later we offer surprises and select some songs that we could consider as epic for a special work, we want to do something great and we just ask the fans to keep an eye on those details that we will announce on our networks. CR: The Hu is one of those bands that has many followers in our region, we want to know how the idea of mixing rock with indigenous instruments from Mongolia came about, and what impressions do you have of those who have heard them for the first time even though they do not know a lot of its culture and instruments?
Gala: Currently there are many similarities between rock music and traditional Mughal music, since all of that is handled to a certain pitch and bringing these two elements together creates a kind of transition. This was all an idea of Dashdondog, the producer, to include traditional melodies and rhythms in a structure of a rock or metal song, and the result is a sound that is enriched in two sources, and that will draw people's attention to the listen our proposal. CR: That context of joining two universes and making it more attractive to new audiences around the Gala world is very interesting, by the way, for this new album there are very good moments like This Is Mongol, Yut Hövende, Black Thunder, Mother Nature, Bii Biyelgee to mention a few examples.
What does the band offer us in this opportunity? Is this album conceptual, or do we have separate stories encompassing different legends within Mongolian folklore? Gala: We send a message to the world through our songs that motivate you to bring out your inner strength and accept being part of this world to fight against all the obstacles that we experience daily. With these songs we motivate the person to bring out their inner spirit since each song has a different meaning and at the same time a message such as loving our environment, respecting others and especially your elders. That way people can embrace those songs as a means of channeling positive energy, and that oneself overcome all those problems that we face every day. CR: The band has experienced important moments in its career, recently you were congratulated by President Khaltmaagiin Battulga for exposing the Mongolian culture throughout the world, to the point that people consider you ambassadors of a rich and ancient culture like that of Mongolia and especially introducing the world to the Hunnu Rock.
What do you think about all this? Gala: That's right, we are cultural ambassadors who represent the culture and tradition of Mongolia to the world, we were awarded the Chinggis Khan decoration, which is the highest distinction our government has, and for us as a band we receive this recognition with great honor, but at the same time it implies a great responsibility in everything we do and promote to the world what Mongolia represents in all its aspects. We strive for 100% in everything we do, especially our live shows. Recently, 2 months to be exact, we were the object of a new decoration, this time by the Prime Minister and for us as artists it motivates us enormously to continue exalting the name of our country throughout the world, and we hope to continue doing this in the future. CR: Another great important moment is that the band participated in the Black List, which is a tribute that several artists made to Metallica's iconic Black Album, and The Hu would not be left out of this party and that you would contribute your versions of Through The Never and Sad Bud True.
What impressions have Metallica had with these interpretations that you have done in your native language? Gala: Being Mongolian musicians and metalheads at the same time, we simply gave our honors to those great songs, but in our own style. It was an incredible experience, and also, Metallica loved how these interpretations turned out in our language and they told us that they had a very good reaction, and that the approach we gave to these two songs was very interesting and they congratulated us for it. We look forward to playing with them on future tours. CR: With the album now available in physical stores and on digital platforms, what's next for The Hu?
Will you start tours in several countries soon or will you focus more on promoting the album? Gala: Now that we have released our new album, we have many ideas for a future release due to the amount of things that we left recorded in the studio but that over time we will take them up again and shape what would be a new album. disk. We will have an extensive tour in the next few days, so we have a limited amount of time to efficiently cover those commitments without affecting our creative ability wherever we go, and strive to offer fans around the world a fresh approach to our music. Now we will start a new tour and we are excited and eager to share all this with people in each of our presentations. CR: At the end of this interview, Gala, what message do you want to send to those who have read us on this occasion, and I want to express my gratitude for the time granted despite the time difference in our countries, it has been an honor to speak with you again for Conexión Rock Radio
Gala: To the fans of Latin America and the rest of the world we want to thank you for giving us since we released our first album, and now with this second we hope that it will be to your liking, that you will receive it with open arms, that enjoy the songs that we have composed and that this is a motivation that we offer you so that you can see life from another perspective and fight against the challenges that as people we face every day. To those who know us for the first time, we welcome you to our history, and we invite you to listen to our discography and in the same way our videos that we will be offering good surprises for everyone later, and thanks to you, Johonny, for approaching us and We wish an excellent anniversary with Conexión Rock, we hope to talk again and we send you all a hug from Mongolia.
