THEM
THEM
A New Age of Ascension on Hemmersmoor If you are a lover of Heavy Metal, and especially of conceptual horror stories, in this special interview we present to you a band that has already been on the scene for several years, and that now seeks to extend its shadow in our region with stories that will be of the fascination and liking of those who know and enjoy his proposal. This time our next report takes place in New York, and that is where Troy Norr, Vocalist of the band THEM welcomes us into his home, and shares with all of you everything related to his third album called Return to Hemmersmoor, the which was released on October 30 through the German Steamhammer label, and which marks the end of a trilogy that began in 2016 with their debut Sweet Hollow, and that now with this new album they seek to close a cycle ... and possibly start another to the joy of his fans around the world. Them was formed in 2008 as a tribute to King Diamond, who has toured until 2011, but it would be until 2016 when the band reunites and releases original material, the EP Fear Them being their letter of introduction, and that same year they would release their debut called Sweet Hollow. Their current line-up is conformed by Alexander Palma- Bass, Angel Cotte- Drums, Richie Seibel- Keyboards, Troy Norr- Vocals, Markus Ullrich and Markus Johansson- Guitars. In this interview, you will know about the concept that the band presents with Return to Hemmersmoor, the trilogy embodied in three albums, its origins of how they become known worldwide, and the interesting future plans that this group made up of American and German musicians looking to perform in A New Age of Ascension on Hemmersmoor. Conexión Rock Radio: Troy, Greetings fromHonduras, Central America! I sent my good wishes to you, your family and bandmates that are well with this emergency, and it is an honor to speak with you and share with our readers the next news that a great band like THEM have for their fans this year, welcome! Troy Norr: Very good, thanks for inviting me Johonny, I thank you, I imagine that the climate in your region is much warmer here at home we are in cold weather, so ready for the conversation with you and for your readers and followers. CR: Start this interview in know how it has been for the band to face this situation that affects them as artists.
TN: I could tell you that the band prepared for this pandemic that began to affect the world at the beginning of the year. Believe it or not, but because of the way we operate, three of us are from America and the other three are from Germany, so how does the band operate? We have a very specific plan with everything we do, so we would come out with an album that is scheduled for October. We already had all the details ready for publication and promotion, when the pandemic hit we had already recorded the drums and maybe a song, we decided to continue with the remote recording process with the vocals and then with the rest of the instruments. This recording was actually a bit difficult because for me, since I live in New York, and you have to sneak out to the studio for the other guys. So much for me that it was a bit more difficult and fortunately this time I have recorded with Joe Cincotta, who has recorded bands like Suffocation, which I am a friend of the band, and the advantage of all this is that I live 10 minutes from my house to the recording studio.
So everything worked very well, I went into the studio and recorded everything there with Joe, the rest would record their parts at other points, the guitars were recorded in Chicago, and the drums in Colorado. The rest were recorded in Germany. And then all the files were sent to Colorado, and from there we started to supervise that the entire mixing and mastering process was fine, although I usually flew to Colorado, now we had to do everything through Skype, so we could all see and listening to everything in real time and it was very good, but it is not perfect, the other part was in Wisconsin, where we would do the mixing, and once everything was finished they sent me the Master, and I had the opportunity to listen to it in three different sources of stereo systems Once we all heard what they sent us, we thought if everything was really good, or would we have to repeat the process even if it took a little more time, but everything worked very well for everyone, and the result was satisfactory. CR: Once the album was ready, did you think if it was a good idea or a bad idea to release it in these strange circumstances? Was it the initiative of the band or the label to make this move? Maybe you thought that postponing the release until another year was the last option ... TN: So for you to understand the way the record label works, they have a correct schedule, and the schedule is for a whole year, maybe even longer, they know what's coming out on what day, and that's okay, we We didn't have a specific date, but we knew it was late October for you to get an idea, since our previous album was released, they wanted to find out why the labels wanted to release it in October, so we still had a June 1st deadline. Why June 1? June 1 is the day when the record label should have everything at hand: the cover, illustrations, photos and master recordings, are details that must be done to promote an album or release an advance in weeks or months. I think that a good part of Germany is closed due to production issues and especially with this crisis, all this is done in advance to avoid delays, so that is also taken into account, and we were worried about the schedules that they managed in the plant and how it might affect stopping the production of the records, and we thought at first that it would not be a good idea, but the label had plans to tour with the release of the album. When the album comes out, we can't do that, so we talked to them, and they said no, we still want to release it in October. They replied that they have several options open, but the viable thing was to promote the album, sell as many as possible, and hope that when all this happens to start preparing the tours, so we do not know how sooner or later that situation could end, but one thing is certain: we will touch once there are no more pandemic threats in the world. CR: Interesting point of view, thanks for clarifying it for our readers.
As we mentioned before, it is rare, but at the same time daring that many bands release their albums in these troubled times, as you know many bands have been in the red, others have taken rest, and have even separated due to bankruptcy. Some will say: we could wait until the end of 2021 for it, there is no rush ... but others in these difficult times need new music, and the new release of Them seeks to fill that space. Those of us who work alongside the labels, the bands, and the producers themselves are concerned about this situation. What do you think about this. TN: For us there are two different things: here is the album, but we could or could not play live, so both things, both promotion and tours are mandatory elements to promote the album correctly, however, we do not have the opportunity, it would be really bad if we couldn't release the album because we are passionate about writing and doing creative work. It is very important in every band to create new music and offer it to the public, but I have to say that the label wants another album, then we will make another album, we have a contract with them for some time, we have material to make much more history, so we have a good connection to the stories and concepts for future releases. We are planning to release a 7 single soon to get something ready, and with that to support the launch of the new album. Regarding the economic crisis of the bands, I do not think that we are going to separate because of something like this, I could tell you that there are some bands that announced that they are not playing, and that they will not continue playing due to the pandemic and that they cannot survive, and I think that part of what we do is that we have other jobs, we pay our bills and that helps us, but we are doing this more to compose and write music, although there are proposals to play with friends or do cover bands, we love to create and it is something we do, and it's no different than we say we went to play golf or baseball, you know and what they like to do you like to write music that we love to record and we love to put it all together we love to play live but we can't play now Same so it's best to leave ideas ready for another album (laughs) CR: Let's put the bad stuff aside, let's talk about the good news and THEM have a new album called Return to Hemmersmoor that was released on October 30 via Steamhammer.
By the way, album number three in its history. Everything indicates that 2020 will be an important year for the band. What are your expectations for this new album? TN: Well I have to tell you it's funny what you asked me, what is my expectation? Now I have no expectations, I will tell you why all this, in the past we had expectations of the first album, and I hope this happens and if it does not happen you get on a slightly sad plane as an artist, so with this album I said that I wasn't expecting anything, I will, and I just want to see that. There will be reactions from people who like it and others who don't, there are some people who say it's not the heaviest album. Personally, I don't think so, I think it's a heavy record, I don't think so, but that's okay, the way you listen to music may be a little different than how we listen and interpret, but we can all agree on certain things. One very important thing that I do and analyze is the mood of the story that the music should carry, it is the important factor in the development of any story, number two is the focus of how you will do in the story and fit it into the music . Which is why I write many ideas and take as much space as possible in writing many ideas. I do all this on a blackboard to leave details of how the story is going and then I take the time of the music, for example, this could go in song number five, or this in number 8 I say that this is so this is song number five, this song number eight and so most bands write a song and ideas for music. Many people think that each album is a story, but in reality if you put them together, everything is a single story. Manor of the Se7en Gables and Sweet Hollow are works that handle continuities in a single story. Maybe people see this strange in doing this type of project or concept experiment, but when you listen to the three albums everything will make sense.
I wanted all of this to be an experience that fans enjoy, especially those who have followed us for 15-20 years, and you always keep that feeling, that feeling of when you bought a record, you open it, you contemplate their art, their lyrics. , details, you feel like all of that is fantastic, and when you listen to the music it takes you to a different place, and that was what I personally wanted to do with this project, and I didn't want to be just another band, I wanted to be special in that sense, where Everything is a concept, so there are no expectations, but when people do not understand what I have just explained they are very quick to judge, we only hope that people like what we have done, it only remains to wait for the reactions if they do. people like it or not. We recently released our first single called Free, and I can tell you that it is a happy and upbeat song, it is not the typical Heavy Metal song that we are all used to hearing. In Free we talked for the first time about what freedom to express yourself is, and I would dare to say that it will be the only song that has a special character in the entire discography of the band. CR: For many Hemmersmoor represents the end of a trilogy that began years ago with Sweet Hollow, for others this is an album with a different story than their previous works, people when they first hear their music would have the feeling of having no connection Between albums, what motivated you to make this trilogy?
TN: There are bands that have created a concept in their work, where one or more stories or parts are addressed with continuations. There are bands that have released one, two, or three albums, as you say, as a concept, that's fine, where it could be a trilogy or it could be you who can know the difference of the same story by collecting all that at different times. So you have this story where it seems to end here and for many they may think “ok, that's fine up to there”, and the label always asks you when you will release a new album, and we as a band give the label what it asks for. In each album it could be the end of a story, but there are too many ideas to make future sequels, it is just incredible, and as you go through the story it becomes more interesting and when you listen to Sweet Hollow or Se7en Gables there is an atmosphere of a lot of fiction and when everything is mixed together, the story unfolds and now with this third album it could be defined as a theater where the characters are, the images with which I work, and I try to involve family and friends, I even have my dog involved in the cover, and I took a tape recorder for several days while he was barking and growling at home, and then we took those sounds and put them in one of the songs, as it makes it very interesting and the one who listens to the music feels more interested and more drawn to history. CR: We want to know what the concept behind this new album is, many will think that Hemmersmoor is a cemetery, an asylum, a cursed place ...
Themes like Age of Ascension, Free, Waken, Battle Blood and Maestro's Last Stand are some examples that the band presents us in this new work. The cover indicates that there was an event that occurred years ago and that it is under investigation. What details can you share with us? TN: The reason it's called Return to Hemmersmoor is because it's a story that ends where it started, so essentially the reference centers on the first Sweet Hollow album, and begins where KK Fossor (the character I play in this trilogy) you are resurrecting your baby who died. The townspeople consider that both how his family does horrendous things by raising the dead, and that they think he has those kinds of powers. He is caught and put on trial. During those events they kill his wife who killed his daughter Miranda. They destroyed the baby and then he was forced to watch them die by the villagers who made a mark on his face, with which they will know that he is a cursed and an outcast. That mark like an inverted cross made people fear him, although at first he was misunderstood because he was previously a gravedigger by trade, and little by little he was a sorcerer who over time developed powers that had the property of resurrect people. One of those people was that baby who died of natural causes, and when people saw that, they destroyed his life and that of his family, and they turned him into a person with a curse on his back. Seeing that all this would cause him problems, he decided to flee to America and became a caretaker of the Sweet Hollow cemetery, that is where the story would continue with Manor of the Se7en Gables, so they hire a hunter to be brought back to justice, and there would start a coven where everyone would die in flames. Many will say that the story would end there, after the events of Manor of the Se7en Gables they decide to recover Mary's body to bring back her daughter Miranda, and her assistant got the body (in our 7-inch single explain that fact) , that's why Remsen goes to the town square in search of his Master. He is horrified to see a man who seeks to destroy Mary's body by incinerating her, Remsen knocks down a water tower, taking Peter Thompson and his men together, (antagonists of the story) extinguishes the fire and saves KK, they flee in a boat and they rescue the body to take it to Hemmersmoor, and in that place they performed a ceremony, where they used potions and sorcery to resurrect Miranda, but they realize that something went wrong since she does not react well. It is revealed in the middle of that ritual that it is not Miranda who comes back to life, nor Mary, all this was caused by the spirit of the Crimson Corpses who threw KK to the ground. So KK yells at Remsen as he was sucked into the earth, and he had no idea what was really going on, and he remembered something at the time "Never forget your bloodline" In this way, in the next release of the 7-inch single, there will be a continuation of that part of the story that everyone wants to know, that part we will call "Encore", it will be basically now that Remsen lost his teacher he heard his voice in head and whispered: do you have seeds to sow? Remsen sowed in the earth to make a baby, so his great-great-grandson would be born to complete what KK left there in the development of the story. CR: This sounds to me like this story will continue, and we will know the answers in this 7 single that you will release soon as an Easter Egg
TN: Exactly, this will depend on the label, whether you want to release it like this or do something in a different way, and I think that's what would make it very interesting for fans who really enjoy what we do, and we think they would really like it. It would make it interesting, it would have a meaning. Everything is a concept that is interesting for me, it is a matter of waiting and I would love to know what is going to happen next. CR: The band have the participation of Dave Otero in the mixing and mastering, or did you have other people for this new project?
TN: Dave Otero has done a great job, definitely. He is a person who knows everything related to production and mixing, many bands have worked with him and have been satisfied with the results that he makes from their studio. As I mentioned before, it was all a joint work with Joe Cincotta, but he only recorded my voice and each of the band members recorded in different studios working with different engineers, so in the end we all have credit for this collective effort And talking about Dave we consider him as one more extension of the band, we all love the way Dave has improved things for us, and he is a person who knows the business very well, and we all would not hesitate to recommend him to others bands and artists, it is a fact that when you have a work of him in your hands the speakers will surely explode (laughs) CR: This is the band's second work with Steamhammer
How do you feel about being part of one of the most important record companies in the world? TN: Working with the label is for us a dream come true, we love working with them, they do a lot for the band, they really believe in the bands and artists they work with and it was very nice for me to be in a meeting with them. Chatting with his whole team in Germany, going to their offices and seeing all the different gold and platinum records on the walls and it was really an experience, eating with them and having a good lunch and talking to them, discussing the relationship future work for the band and label, and for them to tell us that they believe in us is something that motivates you to work and give them what they want when they see fit. CR: We know that the band was formed as a tribute to King Diamond, and one of their albums is curiously called THEM.
For those of you who know the band for the first time, how was the idea of forming THEM, and your thoughts when you started in making original material. TN: Originally, many years ago, I was in a speed and thrash metal band called Coldsteel. We made a decent name for ourselves in the underground scene, we were all living in the days when the Internet trade in tapes and records was a trend, and we wanted it to be. We all wanted to live off a stable project as musicians, but not everything turns out the way you want it to. From an early age I dabbled in music, from the age of 8, and from there my life took a turn when I began to cover various bands such as Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth and Iron Maiden. One of the guitarists was playing a King Diamond cover, it was The Invisible Guests and I play it exactly, and I said wow, I could sing like King, we rehearsed a couple of times and he was convinced, and he would call the other members of The band to propose to make versions of King Diamond, everyone rejected the idea, so they were asked to wait a year and make a special presentation for Halloween. We all considered that it would be the ideal, since King was not active due to his health situation. So we played a show or two, and the funny thing about all of this is that most of the tributes are Coldsteel musicians, we had several shows and the response from people about a King Diamond tribute was positive. It sounded really good and we had a lot of fun throughout that time, with an established line-up we decided it was time to prepare original material, and I proposed to the rest that we do one. The answer was that they were not interested in the idea of making a band with their own music. The proposal was discarded for a while, then the drummer hurt his foot and we could not play, all that situation forced us all to distance ourselves for a while, and within myself I wanted to do a project with my own ideas, although inevitably they related us to King Diamond, especially because of the sound, the band's name, and the falsetto. If you ask me we have great respect for King Diamond as a singer and songwriter, and we do not have the slightest intention of making a copy of what he has done during all these years, we cannot deny his influence on us, many of us have been influenced by other artists like Billy Joel (laughs) I love scary things, and it was something that I hadn't done before, and I did, and this is over time how we've lived through an evolution, so now you know we have different types of musicians musically, you have people who come from a background of Thrash Metal, people who come from the current of Death Metal, even Progressive. All this frames the THEM proposal, we took out our logo and original material, and if people thought that we would always live from being a cover band, we did it at first without disrespecting, work or legacy of a person. Now we have our material and heavier musically, which can reach as many people as possible, and that these people look and appreciate that we are not a copy. I don't sing like King Diamond, I sing with my bass registers and aggressively. We seek to make a difference and we like dynamics. When you experience all that you enjoy that feeling of singing between fast and heavy songs to slow. One such example was Waken. I did not know how I was going to sing the lyrics that I wrote for the song and even the day I entered the studio I did not know how the recording was going to turn out, and I did it in the blink of an eye, in the end I loved it, and that happens the Most of the time when you go to the studio and you know exactly what you are going to do, it all came out spontaneously. CR: I have a personal comment on what you do with the band, as you mentioned in the previous answer, you do not intend to make a copy paste of what King Diamond does, he has his style and that is unmistakable, you have your Personal style that gives a special character to your songs despite the fact that people may associate you directly or indirectly with King, it is something inevitable but that with the passage of time you have managed to establish yourself with your own name in the scene. I want to ask you if you have thought about having King Diamond on a Them live show, or having him as a special guest for an album in the future?
TN: I would love to have it, not only in my opinion, I speak for everyone. We appreciate King so much, so we would love to one day be his opening band for a future King tour one day and so would a band like Attic. Actually, they are influenced by the sound of Mercyful Fate, and I think that if the opportunity of a tour were given, we do not intend to play better than the main act, one as a musician must be professional and ethical in those kinds of decisions. I remember singing a piece from Abigail's A Mansion in Darkness to King. I sang the high notes of that song to him and I remember about 10 minutes before one of the shows in New York City and it was an amazing time to meet him and at that point Sweet Hollow was about to be released. About six months after his presentation we met again, and I gave him a CD with about four or five songs, I gave them to him and I told him that it would be good for him to listen to them, and he gave me his promise to do so. He took it and put it in his bag, King knows who we are, and we decided to wait. When Sweet Hollow was released we had several shows in Europe and we had our Road Manager tour manager, he was sitting at JFK International Airport eating and drinking waiting for a flight in an hour, suddenly I looked at him like he looked like he had seen some kind he's like a ghost, he's looking at his phone and I said what's up? He says look at this, read it and say "tell that copycat he's not half as bad" and I said who is he? He replied that the message was from King. My manager worked with him years ago with monitors and live sound, and I asked him to send him a text in response, I just said "Hail the King" and minutes later we had a pleasant response from him. That was really cool, he was really happy, so King knows who we are, and when we were about to get on the plane, we took pictures of ourselves and posted them online. So on our part we don't have bad feelings towards him, on the contrary, everything is admiration and respect towards his work, and that influence has made Them create a universe of stories and that we connect people with our music. CR: Are you satisfied with everything you have achieved to date?
Are you looking to experience new sounds in the universe of Them? TN: I am very happy with everything we have created since the first album, with the second and third albums. I think that everyone who participated did a great job, and that they have given a great contribution until today. I am very happy to have many interesting ideas to continue in future albums, there will be people who join us now on the way, and people who will stop following us. But one thing is certain that we will give everyone a continuation of this story, and musically it will be heavier. All this will depend on everyone what happens later, we are going to experience new sounds, fast songs, heavy with a lot of good very catchy choruses and I am very happy with that. I'm very excited to see where we go from here. CR: Seeing how successful this album will be, have you thought about doing a theatrical version of this trilogy in the future?
TN: Yes, and what you mention sounds funny, but I would love to and we can do that, which means playing a setlist and going through the three albums and giving the songs an atmosphere of theatricality that would be a dream for me if it did. we would do. I think we have to get a little more popular to be able to do that, but I wouldn't say that would never happen, I think in the future there is a very good chance that something like this will happen. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans to tour Europe, the United States or Latin America in the coming months or in 2021, or are you waiting to reschedule pending dates?
TN: Well, we are waiting for things to return to normal a little and then we will plan when and how it could be, many say for June 2021, but it is something that not many of us know for sure, we want to go to various places such as South America , Mexico, and other points in Latin America and the United States. Everything will depend on the conditions that are occurring with the pandemic, a good promoter and making everything pleasant for the public and for us. CR: Mexico has very important festivals that in recent years have become a point of reference for many bands when they do their world tours. In the case of Them, will we have the opportunity to see them in Central America in the not too distant future? Yes, we would definitely love to come, but you know that everything depends on several details, it is not easy today to organize a tour program when you have many people behind you, and with the changes in immigration and health policies around the world we must considering those factors, and the band will be honored to be able to play for audiences from countries we have not visited. CR: Troy, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
