CJ: Cuando grabamos nuestro primer album Of Darkness…
New Kids On The Block (risas).
THERION
The Litanies of a Mighty Leviathan The band par excellence of Symphonic Operatic Metal is back, and after the launch of the beginning of its trilogy in 2021, everything is an indication that this project that these talented musicians are currently giving continuity to is for many the most ambitious project and that it will consecrate them in a a career that for more than three and a half decades has billed many albums that are considered classics in every rule. We spoke again with the great Christofer Johnsson, the mastermind behind THERION, who in 2022 presents us with Leviathan II, which was released on October 28, 2022 through Nuclear Blast Records, and for his fans and an entire community in Everyone has been able to welcome this new chapter with open arms, putting the band back on top of the rock and metal scene around the world. Johnsson shares in this interesting and extended conversation about the origins of this interesting project that is made up of three albums, each one of them fulfilling the expectations of their fans, showing different facets within Therion's musical universe, offering pleasant surprises that they seek to share in the upcoming tours that the band will announce and that due to the pandemic that has hit the world since 2020, far from sitting idly by, they decided to make a project that will be remembered as the most canonical of their discography. Therion is currently made up of Johnsson on Guitars, Keyboards and Organ, complemented by Nalle Påhlsson- Bass, Thomas Vikström- Vocals and Keyboards, Christian Vidal- Guitars, Lori Lewis- Vocals, and the participation of both Björn Höglund and Session drummer as well as several guests who will give the songs on this new album a special and elegant atmosphere. Make yourself comfortable, enjoy this reading while playing your albums, witness how some mystical litanies once again raise a powerful Leviathan that seeks to exercise its dominance throughout the world. Conexión Rock Radio: Good afternoon from Honduras Christofer, it is an honor to speak with you again in this special interview for your fans around the world who want to know about the next news that Therion has in 2022, welcome!
Christofer Johnsson: Good evening from Malta Johonny, thank you for your interest in talking with me and I extend a cordial greeting to all the fans of the band in Latin America who are looking forward to seeing you again when all this is over. CR: Thank you very much Christofer, we know that there is a great fan base here, who will welcome you with open arms if there is any surprise in hand, I would like to know if you have had the opportunity to perform again in concerts and festivals after this long time of absence? CJ: For now we decided not to do tours in Europe, so naturally we went back to business because things in recent months have been total chaos, because if you rent a normal bus for tours you pay triple what it cost before the pandemic hit the world, let's add that production and logistics costs notably increased, that would also impact the work of the people who work on scheduling concerts with us, as much as we tried to make dates it was chaos, so the best thing was not to do more tours to present the new album here in Europe, and we are just waiting for the moment when things return to normal, although we plan to visit countries like Istanbul, Turkey and Ethiopia later. The good news here is that we will tour several countries in Latin America at the beginning of 2023, while we can organize dates in Europe where we can play without problems, we will take advantage of that time to make several presentations there. CR: This is definitely good news for fans in Latin America and they will surely be aware of the band's social networks to find out which countries and cities you will visit soon.
Now let's talk about the new album by the band called Leviathan II, which was released on October 28, album number 18 in their discography and which was released through Nuclear Blast, by the way, congratulations on this album who is a candidate to be the best in 2022 What comments or reactions have you had from people around the world when listening to it both on the platform and in physical format? CJ: The truth is that we have had very good reactions from people around the world, that is a clear sign that we have done things very well, in general, in each release there are always mixed reactions, you know, some in favor and others against, but in this case we have received very good reviews and high scores due to the release of this new album and we are happy about it. CR: Many have given the album a tremendous ovation to the point of considering it the most bombastic of the trilogy for the great songs that you offer without underestimating the previous work, we want to know if it was easy, complicated or many ideas were given during the process of composition and recording of this second part? CJ: Everything at the beginning was very fast from the moment we started to compose the songs, seeing that I had a lot of material that was far from this being an album, I just decided that the best thing for that material was to do it for a trilogy project, so the idea is that Leviathan is made up of 3 albums, in my point of view everything was easy and especially having Thomas Vikström who supported me a lot in the composition of several songs, in the long run we became a team where We contributed many ideas, usually I had many incomplete songs saved on my hard drive, at the moment that Thomas saw that material he made me the suggestion to complete them and help me with more ideas to shape the songs both in composition, structures and lyrics, we had enough time to make good songs and I think it was the right one based on the work program that was proposed for this new project, they are not exactly love songs that I made We went, but it was a very productive period of work, we had about 40 songs, so we had enough material to work on 3 albums with some extras of course. In Leviathan I you will find songs more oriented towards the elegance of Therion's classic sound, as you say with a more bombastic approach, in the second part you will find darker and more melancholic songs, but there are also great moments there, and for the third part it will be a work where we are going to venture where we will offer songs with a more progressive and heavy approach. For that reason we want to please three groups of fans in the band's musical universe, offer three albums that can fit into different categories without losing our characteristic sound, making each one of them able to show the listener each one of the faces that Therion has in Project Leviathan. CR: Fans think that this trilogy collects the best of the band's era from classics like Theli to Sirus B mixing modern elements, what does Therion offer us in this second part?
CJ: Since we started the recording of this trilogy we wanted to please the fans who have been following us for many years, so we gave them an album that everyone likes, and it was actually a challenge that we accepted from the people and that meant making changes. Since we recorded the first and second part our intention is to offer people the most popular songs in the Therion music catalog without the need to copy or retake things that we have used in the past, previously I sat down to think why these people like it. specifically those songs, and that's where we use our secret sauce to be able to make popular songs like these, and it may sound easy, but actually it is because those popular songs sound different from each other, and I think doing that was the correct because it takes the spirit of important songs like Lemuria, Rise Of Sodom and others that have won the preference of fans in all these years, for that reason I decided to write new songs so that people can have a good time and have fun, like comment without needing to copy old ideas, that's the secret ingredient in the music that Therion makes on his albums, and a lot of people might first think this c song sounds like this or this album has similarities with another, in reality everything is handled in a context of inconsistency, and comments like this will always be there and they are opinions that I will respect from people. CR: On every record you've done over the years, guests are like the element of surprise on Therion records, and this new one is no exception. There are new names that bring interesting things to the songs and also people who have participated with you years ago such as Rosalía Sairem, Noa Gruman and Chiara Malvestiti, but the novelty here is Erik Mårtensson who, in addition to being a guest vocalist, is also in charge of mixing and mastering of these two works.
What impressions do you have of the musicians who have participated on this occasion? CR: In Chiara's case she's been with us for a number of years that's not surprising, she's toured several times and been a session vocalist since Beloved Antichrist, Leviathan I and this new one. As you mentioned, we have an interesting guest such as Erik Mårtensson, his work in Eclipse (band where Erik plays the role of vocalist, guitarist and bassist) made him interested in working with a band like Therion, and he has an excellent vocal record. to make it perfect to fit into our songs. Besides being a songwriter of course I consider Erik to be an extremely underrated vocalist, and I consider him from my point of view to be a fantastic singer.
His work and collaboration in this project were not coincidental, one of those examples was the contributions he made to the Pazuzu track, which was originally written for Alice Cooper, although in the end they rejected it. I don't know if Alice was able to hear the song, but she had it in mind for him to sing on this song and for him to have a guest appearance on this record. It was intended from the beginning to make a vintage album with themes related to Detroit stories, we had collected some information and we wanted this to sound very classic, but then the first concerns arose because it was proposed to work with several composers, from same way with a producer and a guitarist, but we never received any comment or response. I thought that perhaps we were starting the project too late and that several ideas could be rejected. Anyway, that didn't matter anymore because in the end we ended up writing our own songs, so in the end all this was beneficial for the band. With Pazuzu we decided to change all the vocal lines, as I told you before we wanted Alice to interpret them, and I told her in my message that I was impressed by her style, so we tried to do different versions and I told Erik that if he accepted the challenge to sing it, and said why not? That way in the process of mixing the album we had very long hours from 7am to 5pm, and listening to his version we were all speechless and decided that this would be an alternate version within the album, Thomas has done a great job but Erik has definitely shown his thing with this song, and people have acclaimed this version more than the one that appears regularly on the album, far from being left out of the album we included it as a bonus track, there is also the alternate version of Aeon of Maat.
And I had in mind to include Lars-Göran Petrov (Vocalist of Entombed and Entombed A.D.) to give him a touch of old school death metal but unfortunately he died of cancer at the beginning of 2021, I remember that we met several times out there at various festivals talking about music and having good times with other friends over beers and had contact with Lars on a regular basis and after we found out about his illness we were very surprised but scared at the same time, from there we did not hear from him again until we found out some time after his death, which I regret and consider a significant loss for his bandmates and his fans around the world.
When you want something and it is impossible to have it, it forces you to look for more options, LG's voice was impossible to get out of my head, I wanted him to sing there. We decided to try other singers who didn't try to imitate Lars' sound, but it was impossible. And when Erik arrived, the way Pazuzu sang was so brutal that he reminded me a lot of another great singer like Blackie Lawless, and fortunately everything happened that way. CR: Thanks for that interesting information Christofer, it would have been a great surprise to have had these two great characters, but Leviathan II is also a great success.
Thirty-five years of career, many tours around the world, bands that consider them a great influence, and albums that are considered classics par excellence. How do you feel witnessing the great evolution that Therion has had over the years? CJ: Everything was a very natural development in the evolution of our music, if you listen to From Darkness, Beyond Sanctorum or the Symphony Masses you will realize that it has been a musical and compositional development, and that people have liked during all those years. I have felt that there has been a natural flow in doing one thing different from the other, for that reason the band has managed to maintain its identity and its sound. That's part of how we've written our story since those early years when we were making albums and entertaining people, gained a reputation and a name all over the world, and I think we've done our stuff so far. We were also one of the first Death Metal bands that used keyboards, which for many was very strange to combine those sounds, in the same way with the use of female voices, we were aware of the path we were taking as well as being influenced by the culture of the Middle East and especially classical music. We weren't the first to innovate those elements, I'd rather attribute that experimentation to a band like Celtic Frost for example. For many of us we consider that we walk down strange paths and for others, thanks to our evolution, we serve to open the way for other bands to do their thing in the coming years. At that time many called us as a band that has come to revolutionize the sound by combining variants within music. If we take a very clear example it would be Jimi Hendrix, no one can underestimate the impact he had on music, especially rock in those years. If today's young people listened to music without resorting to the internet, they would notice the quality of this person at first impression, to the point of considering him a genius and having composed many classic rock songs at the time. All that nostalgia factor is due in some way to the fact that today's generations pay attention to the work that these artists did long ago, and that includes us. I think many people think that these latest releases have that essence that they were recorded 20 years ago and there they will notice the revolutionary attitude to make good songs like these, even if we release these old songs today they would be successful, and that is the great change that people note that it would not be an easy way to establish yourself in the scene with music that was original or well produced. In recent years I have had the opportunity to listen to bands that show something completely fresh, different and original in their proposals, and that people can pay attention to what they do and that it is worth the time to listen to them, one of those bands is Diablo Swing Orchestra is a band that offers a revolutionary sound in its songs that has changed the perception of many around the world in the last 15 years. The idea is that today people can taste the good songs that are written and composed by these bands. CR: I remember many years ago when we were able in know the existence of the band on the VHS compilations of Death...Is Just the Beginning, remembering videos like A Black Rose or The Beauty In Black were the introduction for people to know them, and even I met the band through the Symphony Masses album in 1995, hence my interest in knowing more about you led me to jewels like Theli and Vovin, but what motivated you to change from death metal to symphonic operatic metal? Was making that move necessary for the band to survive?
CJ: As I explained before, the idea was not to leave in a single line, what we were looking for in those years was to make changes in our music. For me this has all been a natural development. If you listen to what we've done, you'll notice those changes in style from one album to another and I've done a lot of experimentation on the vocals, especially with Lepaca Kliffoth where we kept the sound of Death Metal but included harder vocals, from Theli we started to use the resource of opera choirs, he even sang on those records. Musically speaking with Theli one a revolution that people appreciate very much in Therion's career, from Lepaca we gave signs of what would come later, there were cosmetic and conceptual changes that made this our most popular album by including symphonic elements and opera. From there we experienced the most drastic change in our music. There were noticeable differences between Theli and previous releases like Lepaca Kliffoth weren't as big as each other, or comparing Leppaca to Symphony Masses or Beyond Sanctorum I consider them each to have their moment of greatness, and I consider Syphony Masses to be the most experimental album I've ever had. we have done in those days. In fact, we didn't have constant changes, and it was more a development in our sound and in the way of composing songs, we added different elements and changed the vocals, everything was one thing at a time to make great albums like these that I have mentioned to you. CR: Recently the band has been reissuing several albums on vinyl, was this request from the fans who wanted to complete the band's discography in all its formats or was it your initiative?
CJ: Well vinyl years ago has gained strength in the world market, which I consider is good news for those of us who love the format, I am someone who collects vinyl, I remember when we released our albums I said “it's great to have this on vinyl ” although the CD also had its preference in the market. I have noticed that during all these years these albums were never reissued, they were all limited one-shots, especially in the early 90's it almost disappeared later most of our discography appeared on CD and occasionally on cassette, for That is why in the last 25 years I have used CDs more than other formats, although as a lover of vinyl I prefer to admire the details that can be seen on a cover, I like the mechanical process of putting the needle on the record and turning it on the room of your house I am very happy that vinyl is back, for that reason bands are reissuing all their material on vinyl, in our case we had a high demand for sales of Leviathan I not only on LP but also on other formats, and for the first time Once in 15 years we have reappeared in the best-selling lists in terms of releases, and when they told us that for us it was crazy, now with Leviathan II we have had orders for 50% of the production in plant for vinyl. As for reissuing the material in our catalogue, it was necessary to do this, because if those albums didn't exist within people's reach, technically you wouldn't exist as a band. So it wasn't a decision that was made lightly to make this move and make it all easier by doing a new CD pressing, it wouldn't look the same if colored vinyl didn't exist, and people were always looking to buy in stores your disk. Although over the years the music industry has undergone severe changes, now there is the physical and also the digital format and that is where the platforms and streaming services appear that have become a more accessible and cheaper option, relegating the physical format to a second place in those years where people consumed more music on the platform than buying CDs or LPs, but people always buy in stores and artists now have a mixed audience, and there is that loyalty to the bands that they prefer by far to buy the physical format to enjoy the covers, photos, lyrics and other details that capture the attention of those who like to have all these things in their personal collections and prefer to play this on their sound equipment than to search for music on a platform streaming. We know that we are in other times because of technology, and the young generation does not have CD players or equipment to listen to vinyl, and they look for all that directly to Spotify. CR: Speaking of reissues and classic albums, Beyond Sanctorum turns 30 in 2022, what memories do you have of those great songs like Pandemonic Outbreak, Symphony of the Dead, Future Consciousness or The Way.
CJ: When we recorded our first album Of Darkness… (1991), most of the songs for Beyond Sanctorum were ready and I felt that we should close that chapter with which we started in 1988, we felt that those songs made us understand that we should continue in a line of development once we entered the studio to record them, we were lucky to be able to do all this in a studio that was suitable for what we were looking for those days, and with this I make it clear that I have nothing negative against the people with whom We worked at that time that they were the owners of Sunlight Studio because they did a great job there, I remember that in a week we had done the recording and mixing of the first album in record time, and the experience was really great, despite the fact that there were limits such as being a small space, the recording equipment was not in very good condition, let's say, they told us "don't touch that knob because it can cause a short, the channel would be dead and you will have to record everything again, or that we did not touch any button on the console” we understood those problems and we always had to carry contact liquid for that equipment to be able to fix everything in time. So when we started recording Sanctorum we moved to another studio and for us it was all new and exciting at the same time, to see a real studio with a 24-track recorder and a huge mixing desk and it all worked really well that time.
The person who worked there was actually a keyboardist who was a pop musician and producer at the time, and we thought that here it would be unlikely that anything interesting would come out there (the person they refer to is Rex Gisslén, who produced with the band the albums Beyond Sanctorum and Symphony Masses respectively, made a career with the band Roxx Candy and made a career in the European pop industry with projects like Shanghai and The SuperTrouper.Along with Therion he would have experience working with other important bands like Bathory, Candlemass and Crematory to mention some examples of his career), the funniest thing is that everything went very well and we had a lot of time to talk in the studio about his career in the early 80's telling stories when he was keyboard player of those bands New Kids On The Block style (laughs). But he perfectly understood what we wanted to do within our Death Metal sound, he understood the song structures very well, even he has never listened to Death Metal bands before, because normally in this case the band and the producer had a lot of patience. to re-record takes that went wrong, in other circumstances anyone could have hit it and re-record a few times if something went wrong and there was always a misperception that the music was too much noise. But the producer was always right and understood the song perfectly, I consider that working with him was a great experience and we felt a mutual respect for his work, after that new ideas would begin to change the orientation of the sound of the band and among friends. They recommended us to others who were in common in their circle of friends, a friend of another friend of another friend, and they wanted to try female voices and they recommended good singers, but we only wanted to try a female vocalist and in the end we met her, her name was Anna Granqvist who would participate with Symphony of the Dead and Paths. So the best thing for the band was to have her from there, and most of that process in recording the album was completely experimentation. When we recorded Of Darkness I was clearly convinced of how the band should sound and where we should guide our way of writing new music, from that experience in the studio I am grateful because I felt that we had many resources at hand, some things did not go well but on the other hand some ideas were great, and that would mark what would be the spirit of the band in the future, we even had to face a lot of criticism when we implemented the use of the keyboard in our songs, they told us that we were posers and because we used synthesized sounds and especially with The Path that used that resource a lot there, I remember that many people laughed when they heard the song and compared it to a pop song, and I thought, if these people don't like the album, I don't give a shit about them critics. We were just focused on continuing to make music, and that would ultimately lay the foundation for our mentality and move forward to make more albums. When record sales went down it affected some releases in recent years, one of those projects to give you an example was Secret Of The Runes, it only sold half of the copies we had back then, and for me it was a considerable loss in relation of albums that are considered classics such as Theli or Vovin, and at that time it was an investment that we had to cover and at the same time a loss that we had to absorb, I just thought I wanted to make an album for the sake of doing it, but that was a lesson we had to learn the hard way. CR: From there, a period of experimentation, struggle and glory would begin for Therion with great albums like these Christofer, speaking of all this, have they asked you to revisit the first albums of the band with this current line-up? It may be a crazy idea, but what do you think about it?
CJ: Death Metal had a big impact on our teenage years, you hated everything around you, suffered from depression, fell in love and broke up with your girlfriend, all of that was part of your growth as a person and writing and making that music helped me. to channel all those emotions. I am currently 50 years old, I am economically independent, and if I were to retire from music tomorrow I would do so without problems, I have lived with my partner for 12 years, I have a son, I have a house and I own farmland, a farm and donkeys . At some point in a point away from the whole world that young man started writing Death Metal songs and there was a time when some people approached me with money to support me in those days when I had nothing to eat. I guess in those days you weren't allowed to be able to write that kind of music and I didn't give a shit and moved on, but nowadays revisiting something would be one of the first things I wouldn't do in my life having an established career and a band that has had a long-lasting line-up for several years, the reason is simple, I would never re-record an album that was a hit long ago, in fact making those kinds of moves I see as a very bad idea, for some to give these songs a different approach or sound It could be something interesting, other bands can do it and it is their option to do what they want with their classic material and polish it with a more current touch, but from my point of view I would be aware of making a mistake and I prefer to avoid doing that kind of experiments. CR: Now the fans are wondering: What's next for Therion now that Leviathan II is out on the streets? Everyone is expecting a third part to come out sometime in 2023.
CJ: About the third part and most of the process is completed, we only need to record the vocals and do the mix, so for next year we will do several presentations in Latin America and the United States, we are planning how to organize our concert schedule, anyway way to do some dates in Europe for the summer. One thing is for sure, just as we release an album every year, this new one, which is in the very advanced process, may see the light of day by the end of 2023. CR: At the end of this interview, Christofer, what message do you want to send to all the people who have enjoyed this conversation, and thank you for the time you gave us at your home on this occasion.
