TRICK OR TREAT
TRICK OR TREAT
The Beginning of the Golden Coalition Power Metal + The Knights of the Zodiac = an album that captured two interesting universes from a single coin. Conexión Rock Radio offers you this time an interesting interview, aimed at lovers of these two genres, whose genius sparked interest in the guest band in this report. On our world tour we stop in beautiful Italy, where we talked with Alessandro Conti, Vocalist of the band Trick or Treat, who celebrates an important moment in his career with the release of their new album called The Legend of the XII Saints via Scarlet Records , and that at the discretion of a new guest it was sought to do something different for fans of the Saint Seiya Canonical Universe by making this work a general introspective of their 12 Golden Saints. The band was born in 2002, and is currently is conformed by Leone Villani Conti- Bass, Guido Benedetti and Luca Venturelli- Guitars, Alessandro Conti- Vocals, and Luca Setti- Drums. In this interview we will know about their expectations, the concept behind this album, their special guests, and some alternate curiosities for those who are fans of interesting bands like Twlight Force and Luca Turilli's Rhapsody. Next, we share with all of you this interesting tour of the Twelve Sacred Houses together with Alessandro Conti: Conexión Rock Radio: Alessandro, greetings from Honduras, Central America, I hope you are well at home with your family and bandmates with this emergency that has affected us all, how are you! Alessandro Conti: Hello! A joy to talk to our fans in Latin America, we have been in this quarantine for more than 40 days, for now we can´t leave and it only remains for alerts to normalize, I don´t know how things are in Latin America, we have seen news that are being greatly affected because of the pandemic, it´s true? CR: That's right, unfortunately there are many countries where there are many infected and have registered deaths in recent weeks, but here it´s a matter of staying in home and not being affected, you know fear has taken over people and one now on leaving he is very careful with a very serious emergency like this. AC: As a band and on my behalf especially, I send you our best wishes so that Latin America can come out of this crisis and that we can enjoy a concert again! CR: Start this report with you to congratulate the band for their new album called The Legend of the XII Saints, and which has recently come out via Scarlet Records, how the band feels in writing a new album in their history?
AC: It's great, it's always a challenge, and a challenging experience to write a new album like this. We chose a different way of recording to promote the album because we released a different single every month based on the zodiac sign, so we had a different approach, the content will be especially striking from the photographs, and we experimented with different approaches and thought of new ways for promote the album, we have high expectations that people will like it, because this whole process has been an interesting experiment for the band. CR: Interestingly, the album refers to the Twelve Golden Saints of the Saint Seiya saga, so in previous works such as Re-Animated you made Italian versions of various opening and closing songs from various anime and cartoon series, what motivated the band to pay tribute to Saint Seiya? AC: We are very fans of the 80's series, in Re-Animated we selected our favorite songs from cartoons and anime series, but sung in Italian, here the most curious thing that had a strong impact in our country, and they liked it very much that we did that. In Japan we powerfully attracted attention being an Italian band that does the songs in their style, it was an instant connection with them. In the case of Saint Seiya for us this is one of our favorite series. When we released Re-Animated years ago it was a great unexpected success, so we decided to record something for new fans as a perfect way for them to learn more about the band, and of course keeping those who have followed us from the beginning there, it was a challenge for us to accommodate our time with the recording studio, which was closed for some periods of time, in the end we decided to release a single once a month as an expectation and once we completed the process, we all felt satisfied with everything what was achieved there. CR: Something that has caught the attention in this album is that the band used a different conceptual arc for the Saint Seiya canon, usually we find works based on the battle of the Twelve Houses, or on the same characters and villains main, but in the case of Trick or Treat the approach was different, what details can you share?
AC: As the name of the album says our concept was based on the Twelve Golden Saints, our treatment at the time of composing was in relation to 12 biographies where we did something completely different and entered the minds of the characters to talk about their stories and reflecting on each of the songs, which have very different characters from each other. CR: We know that you were born in August under the sign of Leo, from the entire album, what is your favorite song?
CR: Leo is one of my favorite songs, although there are several songs that are very good on the album, I composed that track together with Luca Venturelli (Guitar of the band), and I dare say that this would be one of the canonical songs from the album, and along with Aries and Acuarius are highlights as far as the Power Metal sound is concerned. When we started the writing and composition process, we got together and thought about how to record songs in different genres and in different types of music for each sign and make it canonical in its own right, for example Virgo, which is a very spiritual character, and in the atmosphere of the song there are progressive, oriental and high speed overtones. We are very happy with the result, and in our view it was really very easy to experience sounds that aren´t typical within Power Metal. CR: We know that for the XII Saints you special guests, some of them have previously collaborated with the band in the case of Alessio Lucatti from Vision Divine, Fabio Dessi from Arthemis, or new ones like Yannis Papadopoulos from Beast in Black and Lucia La Rezza.
How do you feel about working with them in the studio? AC: First of all it was always a great pleasure for us to have guests on every album, big names like Michael Kiske or Michele Luppi are some of those examples. Talking about Yannis is very interesting for being the Vocalist of Beast In Black who sang on the Gemini track, and in which we did a duet for the song and recreate the personality from Saga of Gemini on his evil side, and he is an incredible singer , and has managed to get into the skin of the song. When we started the process I sent him the track, and he arranged everything in his home studio, and everything was easy, likewise with Lucia, she is a talented violinist, she did an amazing work for Libra, and with Alessio Lucatti he worked In all the keyboard parts of the album, for us we look at him as a sixth member because he has done an incredible job, and at the same time that we try to record something more orchestral he has done it in a very professional way, of course, we did not play the same type of Rhapsody music, for example, but we recorded something else with more orchestra and keyboard, so all the guests contributed incredible work. CR: This album is the beginning of a working relationship with Scarlet Records, how was the contact between the label and the band to make this project a reality?
AC: It was really easy because we had been in contact with Filippo Bersani of Scarlett Records for several years, or maybe more, and the whole process and conversations were really easy at the time, we had plans and we talked about it one day working with Scarlett, and we tried it years ago but it never happened before because you know that sometimes we have to respect employment contracts, and that's why it was the delay, but after having released Rabbits' Hill Pt. 2 and Re-Animated, which we decided to do everything on our own, and we decided to join the label, which has been a clever decision since they are young people who know their way of working well, and it´s an honor for the band to be part of their catalog of artists, and Filippo has managed to understand what that we were looking for in this new album. CR: A quick parenthesis
As we all know today, you are the vocalist of another interesting band like Twilight Force, for many it was a great surprise that you are their vocalist, recording with them a great album like Dawn of the Dragonstar. How was your entry in TF? AC: To be honest, everything was easy when all that happened, I met Twilight Force when we were on tour with Sonata Arctica, I knew they liked Rhapsody, and after Luca Turilli announced her reunion with Fabio Lione, I talked to him, and I understood the situation that there was not probably singing with Luca again, so I was basically free of the project, but at the same time Christian Eriksson was leaving Twilight Force (to later be the voice of Northtale), that's how I was proposed in be the voice of Twlight Force, something that caught the attention of Nuclear Blast in case of experience with Luca Turilli's Rhapsody, and currently with Turilli / Lione Rhapsody. The label was looking for us to have the elements of the early days of Rhapsody, and I think it was quite interesting and everything worked very well when we released the album and then did several concerts at festivals, and special presentations in Japan. We had plans to tour in April, which we have already postponed for October, as the Coronavirus emergency is known to have stopped everything, we will wait when the time is right to play again on various continents, especially in Central and Latin America where we want play for the fans. CR: You have also surprised everyone with the album you made with Fabio Lione, many consider: Where titans come to do battle.
How did you feel working with a great vocalist like Fabio? AC: It was a fun experience working with Fabio. Everyone will think that it´s a parallel reunion of Rhapsody (laughs), or that this was the root of conflicts with previous projects. We are friends for more than 15 years and we know each other very well to respect each other, and I consider him as the best Italian metal singer worldwide. And for me it´s a great privilege to record an album with him, in the same way with Simone Mularoni who has done a great job in the production and mixing of the album in addition to providing some ideas for the songs, he´s a talented person in the studio. It was definitely an interesting experiment, but we don't know for sure when we will record another album again, and people will think that we are going to experience a new album with cinematic or progressive elements from the vein of bands like Kamelot or Rhapsody, I know that many will want that, but the truth is we don´t seek to emulate or clone more versions of Rhapsody (laughs) CR: Speaking of LT Rhapsody, I remember the time when you played with Primal Fear in Honduras, it was a great night to remember.
If Ascending to Infinity was a big success, with Prometheus it was the greatest consecration of the band in those years without of course underestimating the whole past that involved Luca with Fabio and the other story that he carried with Rhapsody with many albums that are classic. How do you feel having contributed your talent with Luca Turilli during all this time? CR: I agree with your comment, I like both works Ascending and Prometheus. I remember very well the night we played in Honduras, and I bring beautiful memories of your country. It has been an honor that Luca discovered me as an unknown singer, and he had the confidence to teach me various things in the studio and improve my abilities as a vocalist. When we recorded the first album we took a different approach to what i did with Trick or Treat, and I thank him for his advice. Unfortunately this experience is over, and I must tell you that I am a big fan of Luca's work, he´s one of the great artists recognized worldwide both in metal and outside of it, and it was an honor for me to sing on two albums. At this point you have to consider many different things, the LT Rhapsody project was very different from the past that Rhapsody did through the years, and I am very happy with my contribution to this day because without the reunion with Lione I probably would not be in Twilight Force, so thanks to this I´m working with them and having a new experience in my career. CR: What is the secret for your voice to be in perfect shape?
AC: I drink a lot of natural juices (laughs) there are many secrets to study a singer, and especially with his voice, which is his instrument, of course, you have to keep your body in good condition, especially during the tour with this type of music It is like the marathon that you are looking to do every night where you have to keep your energy and you have to keep your voice for a job of more than two hours on stage and it´s not super easy, but nothing is impossible. During the tours we did with LT Rhapsody we had to avoid falling into the basic rules of the musicians: sex, drugs and rock and roll, in which you can drink alcohol, you have to sleep a lot and get up late, so after the show you should take a shower and rest, a very boring cycle the truth (laughs) CR: For those things in life: have you been asked or offered to give singing lessons or give advice in an academy back in Italy? AC: the truth no, because I don't teach and I have never tried to teach because I am in my daily life, I really believe that I am a tattoo artist, so I love it, I love drawing, so I really always kept my life in two areas Separately, when I go on tour I prepare to sing at 100, I never mix that lifestyle, and it´s best to give things a place separately. CR: What is your point of view of the Power Metal scene around the world, some say that the bands are generic and sound the same, others are reinventing themselves, what do you think about it?
AC: At that point at the level of musicians, it has been a point of analysis for discussion and a problem of why any type of music is quite repetitive, and especially Power Metal. It´s not easy to invent something new, the type of music that Rhapsody has used, for example, is the type of music that has used the use of classical and orchestral sound. Many bands have been emulating that sound in recent years, for that reason they have been tried with other things, and is not really easy, when you record and play Power Metal in the best way, it doesn´t matter if it´s something you already played 20 years ago, or something possibly new, nobody plays something totally new, and I'm quite happy when you hear a good band doing different things even though it's something that has your style, Twilight Force for example, Christian Eriksson has had a lot of influence from Rhapsody, and it was great for me to know that, other interesting bands that have done their thing could mention Beast in Black or Battle Beast for example, but, musicians are reinventing formulas to not be equal with each other, and that's where you look at their capabilities. which makes it interesting to see and appreciate them. CR: With Trick or Treat, do you consider making new concept albums for anime series in the future? What would be your favorite series?
AC: I couldn't answer you for sure, but we could probably record a new album if fans ask us for it in the next two years, but there are many series and songs that we can perform, and there would be people who would be disappointed if we left again. by that address. If they asked us which songs from the series would we like? It would be Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Fist of the North Star or Mazinger Z to mention some of them, and it's great because people know the songs in Japanese and can also become familiar with being sung in Italian. CR: Many fans of the band around the world hope that a live album can be released, what do you think about it? AC: It would be super cool, and it's a shame because we had a tour plan for the summer. Here in Italy we wanted to do the show playing the entire album, but everything was postponed until the end of the year, so it is quite a heavy situation, and we hope that this will normalize as soon as possible, and possibly the conditions can be given to record a Live album, although on DVD it will be very difficult to market due to the change in format, and nobody would be interested in buying a live album. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read this special interview?
Thank you for answering our questions in this special report for the fans of the band, both in Latin America and rest of the world. AC: Thanks to you for the interview, it was an honor to talk with you, and we hope to see each other on a tour soon in the future, we don't know when with this Coronavirus emergency, but it will be a fact that we will be playing again for all of you! On behalf of Trick and Treat we wish you all the best for you, to be safe at home and that when all this happens you can enjoy a great concert in your cities! CR: Alessandro, thanks for your time, the best for you for your family and bandmates at home, as well as our friends from Scarlet Records for their help to make this interview possible, we hope to speak with you again in the future! AC: Thanks Johonny and greetings to your readers on Rock Radio Connection! A hug from Italy! Special thanks to Angelo Mora of Scarlet Records for their help in this interview, and Alessandro Conti for the time he gave us in the preparation of this report.
