UNLEASH THE ARCHERS
UNLEASH THE ARCHERS
The Immortal Legacy from the Abyss Conexión Rock Radio in their international interviews makes the recommendation to those who like Power Metal with female voices to enjoy the following interview that we offer to all of you in different parts of the world, and especially of their new album, which is considered by many to be one of the best releases in this troubled 2020. This time our stop takes us to Victoria, Canada, the place of origin of the band Unleash The Archers, and we talk with their Vocalist Brittney Slayes, who shares with all of you the great response that they have from fans and critics around the with their most recent album called Abyss, released last August via Napalm Records, and that despite the global pandemic caused by Covid 19 the band is looking forward to returning to the stage once the situation normalizes. Unleash The Archers was formed in 2007, and currently is conformed by Scott Buchanan- Drums, Brittney Slayes- Vocals, Grant Truesdell and Andrew Saunders- Guitars, and as a collaborator in their live concerts Nick Miller- Bass. Brittney offers interesting details of the concept that the band presents with Abyss, the guests that appear in this new installment, the general perception of the cancellation of tours due to the pandemic, and the immediate future that these talented musicians have with an Immortal Legacy from the Abyss. Conexión Rock Radio: Brittney, greetings from Honduras, nice to talk to you again! From here we send our good wishes to you, your family and bandmates who are safe and well with this emergency, and it is an honor to share with our readers the next news that Unleash The Archers has for their fans this year, welcome! Brittney Slayes: Thank you so much for having me, Johonny! Hope you are keeping safe and well! CR: Start the interview of this day in congratulating the band for the release of their recent album called Abyss, released to August 21 via Napalm Records, by the way, album number five in their history, how do you fell with the tremendous ovation that all the world has given to the album, to the point that it´s already considered a classic in the band's discography.
What impressions have you had with this general reception towards Abyss? BS: Thank you! The reaction from everyone has been wonderful, and so very much appreciated. When you release a new album you never really know how the fans are going to react, so we have been pleasantly surprised by how much everyone is embracing this new chapter for us. The record has also garnered a lot of media attention as well, which is a first for us, so it is very exciting! I think this album will really get our name out there in front of new audiences and hopefully we will gain a few new fans as well. This album is quite a bit different from everything else we have done, it has a lot more pop elements than we usually incorporate so we feel it has a broader appeal and is a bit more accessible for those that are uncomfortable with the heavier side of metal sometimes. We will always experiment with our music so it was fun to give this a try, but who knows what we will do for the next album, maybe go in the opposite direction and do the heaviest record we’ve ever done ;) The future is uncertain, and that’s ok with us! CR: For this new album you have special guests, in this case Ben Arscott in bass, and the great Francesco Ferrini from Fleshgod Apocalypse, personal comment, Francesco's work on the track Afterlife is remarkable, it has given an epic and at the same time nostalgic atmosphere to the closing of Abyss.
What experiences left to the band in working with Ben and Francesco? BS: Ben is a fantastic musician, and we were so excited he agreed to play bass for us on this album. We have played with him a lot over the years in his other projects in Victoria, so we knew when we approached him that he would do an amazing job and we wouldn’t have to spell anything out for him. He really embraced the whole sound of the record and did a phenomenal job complementing everything with his unique style. Francesco was actually suggested to us by Jacob Hansen, our sound engineer. Andrew had written the orchestral parts on his computer and they sounded great but Jacob knew what it could sound like if Francesco added his personal touch, so we were more than happy to work with him. He did an incredible job and when we heard the difference we were astounded!
We ended up keeping the original ocarina that Andrew did though, it just had the right feeling, very ‘Lord of the Rings’ ;) CR: For many Abyss represents a work that defines the classical elements of the band with modern sound without losing its essence, a album that carries the DNA in the compositions that you make team with Jacob Hansen for the mixing and mastering in the studio.
Everyone thinks the band is doing something conceptual as a kind of trilogy that started years ago with Apex. What is the concept behind of Abyss? BS: The stories for both Apex and Abyss were written at the same time back in 2016. The music was written separately for each record, but we had a few riffs that we came up with for Apex that ended up being used on Abyss instead. The story follows our main character, whom we call The Immortal. He is cursed to serve whoever awakens him from his thousand-year slumbers, and in Apex he was awakened by our villain, The Matriarch, who promised to free him from the curse if he did as she asked. The Matriarch tasked The Immortal with finding her four sons and bringing them to her so she could kill them in a ritual to achieve immortality. After doing so, The Matriarch betrayed The Immortal, and instead of freeing him she sent him back to sleep, to wait for when she had need of him again. Fast forward to Abyss: The Immortal awakens on a starship out in space, and The Matriarch is nowhere to be seen. Eventually The Immortal discovers that his new master is in fact The Grandson of The Matriarch, and together they team up to rid the universe of The Matriarch’s evil once and for all! CR: This is your work number 3 (4 if we include the EP Explorers) with Napalm Records
How do you feel about in being part of one of the most important labels in the world? We are very proud to be a part of the Napalm family! There are so many great bands on the label that we look up to and that we are becoming friends with, it really is an exciting team to be a part of it. At first we were very small fish in a large pond, and now we are medium-sized fish a huge pond, so it’s getting better slowly hahaha! CR: 13 years of career, 5 studio albums ... it's a whole story
Are you satisfied with everything achieved to this day? Are you looking to experience new sounds in the universe of Unleash for future releases? BS: I try not to think about it too much actually hahaha, we look at how far we have come and we are very proud, but we always look forward and take everything day by day. We have some goals that we are working towards but for the most part we really just want to have fun doing the thing we love! It’s always been about writing music that makes us happy and if our fans like it it’s a bonus ;) So yes, I think we will always change and experiment and write whatever we feel is right for the moment, and just hope for the best. So long as it still makes us happy we will continue to push forward and make music for as long as we can! CR: Recently released two singles to promote the album: Abyss and Soulbound, I must tell you that the album in a concert can defend itself in a setlist, Legacy, Faster than Light, Return to Me, or Afterlife are some examples that many praise this work including this your server.
What reactions have you from the fans around the world with the first singles, do you have plans to release another video? BS: I think the fans are really enjoying the singles! We have actually released two more videos, one for ‘Faster Than Light’ and one for ‘Legacy’, but they are not as serious as the first two videos ;) They are just us having fun together and doing the best we can to film videos during these crazy times! We do hope to do at least one more video, but we are struggling with which song to do haha. This is the problem with writing a concept album; there is never a clear favourite! CR: With this worldwide emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as release delays.
Being a musician and part of the band, are you aware that this emergency may affect you economically due to the possible drop in sales? BS: Honestly, I don’t think a drop in sales is what is hurting us, because releasing a record during a pandemic has actually been very successful. The touring is what is missing though, and that is where we make the most of our money, so without the ability to tour in support of the album we have definitely taken a big hit. Usually by now we would have been on the road for a couple of months and would have our debt to the label paid off and perhaps some money in our pockets! Instead, we are depending entirely on merch and music sales and hoping that there are enough sales just to at least cover the expenses ;) This is unfortunately the way things are for the unforseeable future so we are doing our best to come up with fun merch ideas and make videos to keep everyone interested! CR: Currently, the preorders and official digital purchases by fans help bands create a balance in this situation. What do you think about it? BS: I think all sales help, no matter if it’s one song for .99 cents or a whole pre-order bundle for 199.00 dollars, it all helps. We appreciate the support from our fans so much, you have no idea. We would not be here today without them, and that is no exaggeration. When no one else would listen to us, no labels or media or booking agents, our fans were there for us, helping us through the rough times, so we have so much love for our fans. They will always be the most important thing to us, always. CR: With an already established discography, are you looking to release a live album or DVD in the future?
Or do you consider that such a project could be risky for the band in these tough times? BS: We would love to release a live DVD! Unfortunately, due to the fact that a large majority of our catalogue belongs to Napalm, we have to wait until they feel it is the right time and the right show. Perhaps if we play Wacken next year they will hire a crew to film it and we will get to create the DVD you all deserve! Ultimately it is up to Napalm though, it is written right into our contract. CR: What is your opinion about the women who play and sing in metal bands, on the one hand they have earned the respect and admiration of many with their talent, on the other there are places where they are sexualized and disrespected.
Being you a beautiful and talented vocalist, you have managed to win a very deserved place in recent years on the world scene to the point that many see an influence in Unleash. Comments… BS: I think the industry is slowly getting better about this. There are more women in bands showing up on the scene everyday and I think that is a great thing, I just wish that there would be a little less judgement sometimes. When someone hears a band with a male singer and they don’t like it, they just write off that band, but when someone hears a band with a female singer and they don’t like it, for some reason they write off all female singers! I really don’t understand that at all… Just becuase the band is female-fronted it does not mean it is going to sound a certain way?! It could be death metal, black metal, power metal, or symphonic metal, you have no idea until you listen… I just find that many will not even bother to do that. I am also not a fan of women being considered a ‘novelty’ anymore… No more ‘women in metal’ calendars or polls or competitions… If you wouldn’t do it for men then don’t do it for women! We are not a ‘selling feature’, we are human beings that just want to play heavy metal, that’s all. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans for tours in Europe, the US or Latin America in the coming months or in 2021, or are you waiting to reschedule pending dates?
BS: We do have plans actually, yes! We are crossing our fingers that touring will be possible in the fall of 2021 becuase we have BIG plans. We have dates booked in Europe, North America, South America, Australia and Japan, so we really hope that those are able to go forward and we won’t have to cancel again. I honestly would not be surprised if things did get pushed back, as things are not looking to good in most places right now, but I prefer to perpare for the worst while hoping for the best ;) CR: Brittney, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for the time in make this special report in Conexión Rock Radio BS: Thank you so much to everyone that has listened to the album or purchased the album! We appreciate your support so much and really hope we can hit the road next year and see you all on tour! In the meantime, feel free to come hang out with us on Twitch if you have a free moment.
