VICIOUS RUMORS
VICIOUS RUMORS
A Celebration In Dark Times If you are a lover of Heavy, Power or Groove Metal, we invite you to enjoy the following interview that Conexion Rock Radio has for you, and the main band that appears in this space brings under its arms the one that for many is considered one one of the most important releases in 2020, and that at the same time they score another important future classic in their discography. Our communication on this occasion went to California, United States, and that is where Geoff Thorpe, Guitars and Vocals of the band Vicious Rumors, who are experiencing an important moment in their career with the release of their new album called Celebration Decay, which was came out on August 21 via Steamhammer, and that in 2020 the band presents us with new changes, which according to our protagonist were necessary for this new work to become a reality. Produced by Juan Urtegaga, the line-up is currently conformed by Geoff Thorpe- Guitar and Vocals, Larry Howe- Drums, Gunnar DüGrey- Guitars, Nick Courtney- Vocals, and Robin Utbult- Bass. In this report, you will learn about the entire recording process for Celebration Decay, the changes that occurred in their lineup in recent years, curiosities around their discography, and the future plans that these pioneers have for their fans to make A Celebration. In Dark Times Conexión Rock Radio: Geoff, good morning from Honduras! I sent my good wishes to you, your family and your bandmates who are safe and well with this emergency, and it is an honor to speak with you, and share with our readers the next news that a great band like Vicious Rumors has for you. your fans this year, welcome! Geoff Thorpe: Hello Johonny, thanks for your interest in sharing with the fans what the band is currently doing, we are all doing well here even though we are experiencing an emergency situation in California with fires that have devastated hectares of forests. According to the authorities, they have registered more than 300 and that directly or indirectly affects us. CR: It´s a bad situation that you have over there that complemented with the pandemic makes things difficult, please take care of yourself at home. GT: Thank you for your good wishes, and of course we will be safe so that the fans can enjoy what we currently have in our hands, and we send a greeting to all those who follow us from various parts of the world. CR: Start the interview of this day in congratulating the band for their recent album called Celebration Decay, which was released on August 21 via Steamhammer.
By the way, record number thirteen in their history. Everything indicates that 2020 will be an important year in its history. What are your expectations on this new page for Vicious? GT: Well, you know, it would have been very easy in the world situation for the record company to decide not to release the album, and we are very grateful that they wanted to go ahead and do it, because you know, without that initiative everything would have come to nothing, like everyone knows there are no concerts, there is no new music, so we are in a moment in life where you have to be grateful for what you have, and that is why we are lucky that we are still healthy, we were on tour in Europe in March , when things got complicated and we rushed back, and the borders were closing. Now with the release of Decay it was something that we worked really hard on, and we feel like we really captured something special with the band and we just hope that fans around the world like it. CR: People will definitely love the album, don't hesitate.
There is something curious in this whole situation as you said before, the label gave them the confidence to launch Decay at this time, and some might think that this movement is strange in these circumstances, we want to know if you thought if it was prudent or not to release this work with a world economy literally bankrupt? GT: You know it's one of those things that we've been around for 41 years and we've survived life, death, marriages, births, divorces, earthquakes, we have to live like almost everything you can imagine, and now we add the pandemic to the list. This is something you might never see, we are kind of survivors (laughs), and we have an urge to move on and survive like this just by being in the music industry, so I think somehow this baby (the new album ) is in the ideal conditions to know life situations like the one we are experiencing, but you know that this health crisis is probably much more serious than previously thought, and it´s much more important than you know what we have probably lived through ever, and you know that there are a lot of people suffering all over the world, and you know that all of us have to go through this whole process like it or not, so we just wanted to make the best album, and we wanted our fans to have something real in their hands, that can really sink their teeth in, and exercise or fast driving too, and make the heavy metal flag stand tall. CR: I must tell you that the album itself represents a great effort for the fans, tracks like Celebration Decay, Arrival of Desolation, Darkness Divine, Death Eternal, Masquerade of Good Intentions, are literally a punch to the face! Do not hesitate, many will receive this work with open arms, to the point that it is already considered a classic within the modern history of the band in our merely personal opinion. GT: I think Vicious Rumors is one of the few bands that is able to mix this traditional Heavy Metal with elements of Power and Thrash metal, even some classic rock, you know, I like it, we just have a lot of different influences and a lot of aspects. different from the sound of our band, and from the aggressive way in which it has been shaped to this day. The contributions of the new members such as Gunnar DüGrey and Nick Courtney also influence, in the same way we have had an excellent working relationship with our producer Juan Urteaga, all this has been teamwork and it is a real effort, where the songs and that's where you know the momentum that the band is carrying at the time, but this is definitely like working out as a team, and it takes all the effort of the team to make it worthwhile.
CR: Speaking of the new members, in this case Gunnar DüGrey (Guitars) and Nick Courtney (Vocals) this is your first album officially in the timeline of Vicious Rumors. How do you feel about them being part of the band in this new lineup? GT: That's right, yeah, this is their first album with the band and you know the guys were able to go on tour with us and do a year and a half of live shows, because we did one hundred and eight shows for the celebration of 30 years. from the Digital Dictator, they arrived at the right time to do the tour and prepare the album, and I think that really made them feel comfortable, they knew the band well, it wasn't something new for them, you know it was something they understood very well doing all those shows and preparing in the same way in the studio, so this was a perfect opportunity for them to contribute ideas, which appear in several songs, and with Juan in the production everything was an easy process, to the point of have perfect chemistry in the whole process.
CR: For this new album you have special guests, in this case Greg Christian, former Bassplayer of Testament
What experiences did you have in working with Greg? GT: It was fantastic, you know that Greg and I have been friends for many years, practically from the early days of Testament, and we actually used to have a rehearsal studio in Oakland where we would rehearse side by side, and this is the first time. I've worked with Greg, it's actually Juan's idea, and we both agreed that that's a perfect choice, and he introduced us to Cody Green, so we invited him to join us on the road and play from 20-25 shows and ended up staying with us, and playing a total of one hundred and eight shows for a year and a half, when Cody left the band we called Greg to help us both on tour and in the studio to complete the album, so I'm very grateful for the contribution they gave in recording Celebration. CR: We know that the position of bassist is free, many want to know if the band can have Dave Starr again, who is considered an important musician in the history of Vicious, and his last album was Warball in 2006.
Geoff, what happened between the band and Dave? Tensions, vices, egos? Will it be possible to work with him again in the future or are you looking for a full-time bass player? (Question from William David Guerra from Honduras) GT: First of all, thank you for the question that William asks.
We currently have a new bass player and his name is Robin Utbult, as I mentioned before we had Greg as a guest and he has been involved in so many projects, and he is a person committed to their agendas and other things as you know. We were initially contemplating Greg being the band's bassist, but Robin showed up, and we met him on Digital Dictator's anniversary tour in Europe. He was in his Air Raid band in Sweden, and they were our support band on those dates, we invited him to join us on various shows and it really worked out very well. When it comes to Dave Starr, you know we have a long history together. Dave, as you know, did a great job in the band's early years, but we really parted ways with each other, and I don't really see Dave coming back to the band, in the last few years since his departure with Warball we grew apart. In recent years we had special meetings with several former members of the band and they are part of our history, since we have had such a long history that we could relive those days and do special things with all of them, although everything did not work as expected. I wish Dave the best of luck in his projects, and I am currently grateful to Cody Green, Greg Christian and Robin who have contributed their help on bass as well as touring musicians as the band is now complete. CR: For many, Celebration Decay represents a work that defines the classic elements of the band with a modern sound without losing its essence, an album that carries the DNA in the compositions that you team up with Juan Urteaga for recording and mixing in the studio.
What is the concept behind Celebration? GT: Basically, it's the kind of songs that the album title speaks directly, it's about the decline of humanity, what's really going through this darkness and yet we felt there were a lot of songs that would be heavy metal hymns. So we wanted a heavier concept both in lyrics and music, and the whole process itself was very natural. I have this recorder where I record Parts and then I also have a song book that I like, I just put all kinds of different ideas for lyrics and song titles and then you know that together as a band we work on that and that's a big part of everything we've done on every record with him since Warball so we've been working together for 14 years and there's no doubt that you know that he's just been a big part of the band and he's also a musician you know so You know it's helping and in so many ways sometimes it helps finish some lyrics or melody ideas or if you know it's a nearly filled it up, it almost feels like I have six members at this point. CR: This is your fourth work with Steamhammer How do you feel as a band to be part of one of the most important record companies in the world? GT: Absolutely, I want to say that I have worked with many different record companies in my career, including Shrapnel, Roadrunner and even major labels like Atlantic Records, I would have to say that the relationship I have with SPV has been perhaps the best of all. All of them in the last 10 years have just believed in the band, and have worked with us, and we feel satisfied with the guys that are currently on the label, so we feel very lucky that the band works at SPV for these 10 years that we've released multiple albums with them, and as far as I'm concerned, you know this is our home. CR: Forty-one years of career, 13 studio albums ... it's quite a story
Are you satisfied with all that has been achieved to date? Looking to experience new sounds in the Vicious Rumors universe? GT: You know that I wouldn't really do it because you know each album is like a snapshot in time, for this new work everything is perfect at our discretion, for rare reasons there are always songs that are left out, so it is best to save the demos and polishing them for another album, I still remember my first contribution with the band was with the song The Crest for Digital Dictator. I know it's amazing to have 13 studio albums in our career. We know that we have released about 140 songs approximately, and that is a sample of our talent and what we can offer in the future, we currently have another album in the contract, so the main idea is to stick together as a band, prepare various special things for the fans, and surviving the whole covid-19 thing, and going back to touring again, if you're wondering if there is any new stuff saved that might be part of the question, the answer is YES, I love writing, and let's go to leave that for later, since we want to live in the present moment celebrating the release of Decay. CR: With this global emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as delays in releases.
Being a musician and part of the band, are you aware that this emergency could affect you financially due to the possible drop in sales in the physical format? GT: Yes, it is a difficult position, and personally times change and we are not the same young people as before, but we have been on the radar for a long time for the fans, and we are grateful to them for the support they give us, with SPV we have been looking at several options to launch it, and at one point all this seemed uncertain, we had contemplated launching it in March, then postponing it to April or May, so we hope it was the ideal time to launch it and that people enjoy it. We will not be surprised if things are slow and sales are down because it is a trend that has affected everyone with no exceptions, and we felt it was important for us to continue as if we had already survived that, as we talked about before, but we have survived so many things and the band was already in need of releasing this album, and we wanted you to know that at least giving people something new to listen to, because in these conditions no one can go to a concert or a festival, it is frustrating for all and it's understandable at that point. At least you could have a new album and many support heavy metal in that way and for that reason many people are thankful that the album is out and I will tell you that we are not worried about the numbers at the moment, we are just going to keep it up. the flag of heavy metal and celebrate metal every day like we always do and move on. CR: Everyone thinks that there are no underrated records in the band's discography: Soldiers of the Night, Welcome to the Ball, Cyberchrist are some examples that many consider to be classics.
Is there a formula in the band to do high quality work? Comments ... GT: Well, you know that the formula is passion and love for your instrument. It's how we talk and talk about songs from the music that we like to go to other concerts, so for us, we set a very high benchmark for ourselves and put a lot of pressure on ourselves to make and release the albums, we feel we owe it to them. everyone to keep the album at this high level so it's just personal pride and dedication to our art and you know we love what we do and we love heavy metal so we feel like the formula is to be true to ourselves, and so if we are true to ourselves, the fans can see that, and you know that it's like me personally, I'm a very song-oriented person, I think if you have a great song, then everything fits, just the same. The way with the writing and structure of the songs is very important and it feels good all that when you kick ass, and you have that immediate feeling that that is, so that is a good sign that everything is fine. CR: In recent years, many bands hold special celebrations to revisit live classic albums.
In this case, the self-titled album turns 30 in 2020, also Sadistic Symphony turns 20 Are you for or against this type of celebration, or do you have plans to make special anniversary editions? GT: I must tell you, it´s a very good idea! Yeah, you know what's funny about all this because we've been here so long, it seems like every year or every two years we get closer to some kind of special anniversary, it's like one more. One of the good things about surviving so long is that so many anniversaries are possible that we definitely like to do, especially on tour, as you put it this is the 30th anniversary of our self titled album that came out on Atlantic, and next year is the 30th anniversary of Welcome To The Ball, so we talked about a possibility and we all agreed that we would like to do this on a tour, since we had to cancel this whole year, we are talking about possibly doing a special tour next year in the one where we'll play the entire Welcome To The Ball album, and include some extras from the Celebration Decay, and things that we haven't done before, possibly a special edition could come out from Atlantic, but yeah, I think it'll be a lot of fun celebrating these milestones in our career, and I think the fans enjoy it, so you know, I've spent most of my career waiting for what we can do in the future, and we have no problem in make special celebrations. CR: Many bands around the world see Vicious Rumors as an influence
What is your point of view of this generational change where many bands mention you? GT: I want to say that it is always an honor to be held in high esteem, my friend, you know, I considered it a great honor because there are young musicians or bands with a great trajectory that have grown up with us, and that they mention us as a reference, it is really humble and you know like I said we are huge fans of heavy metal and fans of this music so I think as long as we keep that kind of attitude and don't take ourselves too seriously, we will always be the same ones constantly pushing everything that forward, in this path dominated by music, and that we have many things to do. CR: Once this emergency has been overcome, do you have plans to tour Europe, the United States or Latin America in the coming months or in 2021, or is the outlook uncertain for now? GT: Well, you know, the only thing that worries me is that when 2021 comes around, you will have practically all the bands that were all together on the tour, I mean the markets will be flooded (laughs) so much with tours that I was just talking to establish plans with my friends from Exodus, I spoke with Zetro (vocalist of Exodus), who invited me to his Toxic Vault program and we talked about everything that could happen in terms of tours if the emergency ended, we definitely have plans to return to leave again in 2021 possibly in Europe for May, and then we complement dates in the United States. After that we would love to go to South America and Central America if we could get there it would be fantastic, we would love to play live and hopefully there will not be much competition for ticket sales, to organize an agenda of solo or accompanied tours and play live again. CR: Geoff, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for taking the time to do this special report on Conexion Rock Radio. GT: Thanks to you Johonny for your interest in this conversation and I want to say that we appreciate the fans so much, that we have never played in Central America, but we did play in Mexico City in 1988, and we hope to meet new countries on future tours. We really hope to have the opportunity to come and play for you and I just want to wish all my good wishes that you are in good health, that you fight this pandemic in your homes, and I want to personally thank you for all that you are doing to keep alive through from your radio the spirit of rock and roll and heavy metal, and it is a real pleasure to have spoken with you in your interview.
