VILE CREATURE
VILE CREATURE
A Band That Doesn't Give Up Against Apathy The Sludge / Drone / Doom Metal is the protagonist in this new interview that we offer you on Conexión Rock Radio, and the band that appears in this special report returns without fear to offer their fans an interesting episode in their career, and that with much they will fight apathy around the world. Our contact is to St. Catharines, Canada, the place of origin of the band VILE CREATURE, who had the honor of talking to KW, Vocals and Guitar, who provides details about their new album, the number three in your career called Glory, Glory! Apathy Took Helm !, and that will be released in mid-June via Prosthetic Records, where it marks the band's debut with this label, and that for their fans it will be an album that defines a new direction in the band's sound than with the over the years his proposal has matured by great steps. Vile Creature is a band that was formed in 2014, and they are released with their first album A Steady Descent into the Soil, and that to this day they have released 3 albums, an EP and a compilation. The current Lineup is conformed by WK- Vocals and Guitar, and VIC- Drums and Vocals In this interview they will learn about the recording process and concept of this new album, the expectations, history, and future plans that this band does not seek to surrender to world apathy. Below, we share our special interview with all of you: Conexión Rock Radio: KW, I'm Johonny González of Rock Radio Connection from Honduras, Central America, I send you my best wishes that you are well at home in this emergency, and it is an honor to speak with you in this special interview for our audience and readers in various continents that want to know about the history and the next news that Vile Creature has for its fans in 2020, welcome! KW: Hola, Muy bien, gracias! (Hi! I´m fine, thank you!) CR: Do you speak Spanish? KW: Muy poco! la verdad! (Very little truth) (laughs), and I really appreciate your interest in discussing what we have as a band this year. CR: Start the interview of this day in know what are the expectations for the new album of the band called: Glory, Glory! Apathy Took Helm !, and to be released in early June via Prosthetic Records.
How do you feel about coming back with a new album in your career? KW: We are very excited about that, as we released our last album in 2018, and this is the first one that we debuted with Prosthetic, and it has really been a really wonderful experience for us, and we took our time working on recording, and feeling a Really wonderful feeling when you first hear something you created, and not only do you feel rejected right away, it's really I'm very proud of the record, my Drummer in the band is very proud of the record and we're really excited that the people can hear it in the coming weeks. CR: In this new album, will you follow the conceptual line as Cast of Static and Smoke?
KW: When we released Cast of Static and Smoke in 2018 it was kind of a story of its own, like we made our own world and wrote a real 16-page booklet like we wrote a short story, and then we wrote the songs to capture them. This whole album handles completely new songs, just like everything you do is a little different, this album feels like it sounds like a logical follow-up to Cast, but it's a band that is older and wiser, and just feels more secure. about the music that we're playing, and we're talking about instead of talking like a fictional world that we made up, we're very much like dealing with real feelings of sadness and apathy and nihilism and fighting that because it's really stupid, it's just that it feels lazy and sad to let your life evolve into that kind of nihilistic feeling when you can do your best to get it right I guess… CR: The band will continue with the long track formula, or do we have short tracks for this new album this time around? KW: I feel like there is a decent mix like the previous albums (laughs), the new album is made up of five songs and lasts approximately 48 minutes, so I think the first two songs on the album or both are 12 minutes, and then the last three between 8 and 10 each, so to be fair when that was put in context for the last album it was four songs and one of them was 16 minutes long, so short for us, ( laughs) but for this new album we will have variation between short and long songs. CR: Everyone considers this new album to be the most experimental and daring of their career, beginning with the title that refers to the apathy that has dominated society in recent years.
What details can you share about Glory, Glory? KW: As I told you before, we are trying to combat the feeling of going against the tradition of feeling really depressed by the world, and I like to evolve towards really negative thinking because it takes a lot of effort to move around the world and make a change. Positive both personally and politically, and it's worth the effort because it's really easy to just sit back and say it: fuck off! So it seems like it's really easy just to say that I screwed it up and like I just let the world gobble you up in a bad way when you can make a little effort and try to improve not just your life but the lives of the people around you and I like a better life, and I feel like that's worth it all the time. CR: Adam Tucker has produced all of the band's albums.
How do you feel about working with him again? KW: He is the best producer we have, and I know there are a lot of really wonderful people who produce and like mixing and mastering albums, but we feel very comfortable with Adam, and he is a person who takes pride in making sure that your work with the band sounds your best. He has worked in the studio with all of the band's albums. His recording studio is in Minneapolis, and to record with him. In this case the distance was a factor that we had to solve, and everything was done in Hamilton and recording in a studio about 10 minutes from our house was the best time, and we will work with him a million times if we can because he feels like if you were an extended member of our family today. We have many people who have been constantly involved in our band from the beginning. Adam Tucker has acted like we were involved in the recording of everything we've done, Steven Wilson has done art in almost say, probably 95% of the things we publish has done in almost every shirt design in those who have been involved, have drawn three of our Logos, made the art for the last album. Steven Wilson has been as the band's art director for a while, and it was very easy to work with Laurel Minnes, who is a person who sang on the EP A Pessimistic Doomsayer, and has currently been a constant member who has played with us. live and has done things, in our live performances. We feel good about our environment as we are creatures of habit so we definitely have people we trust and like to work with a lot. CR: Let's talk about the history of the band for those who know your music for first time.
How did the idea to give form to Vile Creature come about? KW: Previously I had experience in other bands playing guitar. Vic plays the drums, we both do vocals, and we're currently married. We started dating as I think it is almost exactly 6 years ago and shortly afterwards Vic really wanted to learn to play the drums, so I taught him how to play and also how he can write music, and I left it as a challenge for Vic to I did a drug test to give him a Drumset, and happily the practices began, a week later we went to a practice studio, he was there for 3 months, and later we recorded our first album, Vic was destined to play the drums that makes him in a very natural way. She is a wonderful person, and we have had fun and creative moments. It was really wonderful for two people that we really like each other, and this has all been really fun, since then Vic has grown up in such a great way playing his instrument. CR: What bands or musicians are your influences? KW: I feel like it's a difficult question to answer (laughs), and I'm going to give you a kind of answer because I feel like everything we've heard influences in some way the things we do, you know if it's good and if it's good music and it makes you want to create something like that if it's bad music and it takes you away from that kind of creativity, almost everything I've heard has influenced me in a positive or negative way and yes, I just like it if I feel that will be my answer as soon as to influences. CR: KW, we know that the lyrics of the band speak of the oppression, veganism, homophobia and rights of the people that make up the Queer and Trans groups.
We want to know if it has been easy or difficult for Vile to adapt to a scene in which some people may not be ready to listen to his music. As a popular phrase says: If you want shock ... you got it! KW: Yes, I don't know if it matters if it is easy to fit in or not because I feel that we are really good at paving our way as we don't really care if we fit in because we are really happy to do our thing and if we don't fit in something, it will fit in somewhere else, just really again, we really like to play me talk like what the old saying is that you only write about what you know, so we just write about our experience and those are the experiences of Queer and growing people in a world that is not so kind to Queer people and we are not shy with our experiences from a shy point of view and how we feel about people who want to harm people due to the color of their skin, or who they love or how they identify as if we were very open about those things, and I don't care if we fit in because we are going to be there no matter what happens and I feel that taking up space is the most important thing you can do when you You fight as an oppressive force, if that makes sense. CR: Vile Creature, a band loved by many and criticized by others at various festivals where the band performs live shows. We want to know what has been the best concert that the band has had in these years, and how has the reaction of people been when listening to your music. KW: I can tell you that we have seen many bad shows that we have had in the last two years, the oldest shows have been really fun, really incredible, last year all our shows have been really full. We played at the Roadburn Festival in the Netherlands last year and we had just under a thousand people watching our music and following our tours, playing live and feeling that energy are really wonderful feelings and seemed to really get along, it's a very good vibe that everyone there will enjoy our concert. CR: In recent years, has the band been censored or boycotted at a concert? What memories can you share about it? KW: I think the closest thing that happened was maybe our first year as a band, like 5 years ago we played a show in our hometown: St. Catharines, and we were in the middle of a song and some really drunk idiots started walk, we are playing in a place where there were stairs in front of the stage, and they started walking towards Vic, and we like to play a note if you have listened to our music, you know we have noise and feedback in many songs, so we played a part where there was a lot of it, and I took my guitar, grabbed the boy by the ear and took him out of the place, and then I went back on stage and continued playing, and as if that was the most violent thing that happened in one of our shows, it was like physically kicking out a person because he was drunk and being a jerk but nobody has ever boycotted any of our shows, although there will always be urban legends on the internet, who knows ... CR: From your point of view, is there any formula for the band to make high quality albums?
KW: I don't know if there is any formula, I think it's just that we play what we like, and we don't feel any pressure to do anything other than enjoy what we are doing as a band. We are lucky to take this really seriously because we love and appreciate it, but it's also not what we don't do to live our best. We own a business together. We have a really amazing house. This band is a really fun project that we are serious about spending time and then we also meet at the door when we want to, so we only do things that make us happy and we only do things we want to do, and we don't feel pressured to do anything. that we don't want to do and I think it's a great recipe for success in something from an honest point of view. CR: KW, do you currently have collaborations with other musicians on your live shows?
KW: 99% of our shows we two participate, only on special occasions do we make a special invitation to someone to join us on stage. Currently as we all know there is a global pandemic, and there is no concert at this time, as long as we are allowed to play, our plan is to continue playing as a two piece, we have never felt pressure to add other people to the band from time to time. occasionally. We had a friend of ours named Laurel Minnes, as I mentioned before she sang with us live because she was invited on one of our albums, but otherwise, we just like to do our thing and play together. At the moment we have no plans to add more people for a live concert. CR: If the fans proposed a live album to the band, what would be the response of Vile Creature for a project of this nature, are you for or against recording live? KW: I don't know, probably not. I can't imagine seeing people who want live album would be something that people would want. I feel like when we're in the studio we do things in a very specific and safe way, and then live, we do things in a different way, especially with the new songs from a new album played live they are going to sound different because it would involve having additional musicians and additional instruments and that would greatly change the structure of a song. If that happened it will be our first time recording, and we made that conscious decision not to focus on things live when we are in the studio and then sort everything out in the moment. That matter is to think seriously, but never say never ... CR: Once the Coronavirus emergency ends, do you have tour plans for late 2020 or early 2021?
KW: It is too early to speculate that the world is still not close to going back to a place where music and happening again, we were supposed to be right now, actually we are supposed to be if the coronavirus had not happened , we were supposed to be leaving tomorrow for our first tour of the west coast of North America, we were supposed to be on the road in the Netherlands again and playing the show in England and then we had a bunch of other plans that Obviously they couldn't happen, I think right now all of those things are rescheduled for 2021 and if there is somehow a miracle cure in the world at open borders and there is a reasonable chance that we can play sometime this year we are going to doing is as if we wanted to release an album, we want to play shows, but above all it is everyone's safety and live shows occupy a priority position in importance, so both We want to go out and play songs and two are on this record all. What matters now is that people are safe, happy and healthy, which takes precedence over everything. CR: What is the message you want to send to those who read this special interview, and thanks for answering our questions for Conexión Rock Radio.
KW: Thank you very much my friend, an honor to have talked with you this day! CR: KW, thank you very much for your time in this conversation, our radio station from now on has full support for the band's music in our live broadcasts, in the same way that our friends in Looters that made the conversation this day. Please send my regards to Vic, and we look forward to speaking again in the future to continue the interesting story that Vile Creature makes cool, aggressive music with this new album! KW: Thanks again for the interest, and we will be here for what you need, and we send a greeting to all your readers who appreciate your work in reporting what many bands do on the scene around the world. A hug from Ontario, Canada. Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey for their help in making this interview possible, and to KW for the time given in this report.
