VIOLENCE
Thrash Metal That Will Put The World Burn The old school of Thrash Metal is back… and this time to stay! That was a premise that from 2018 the world would witness the return of one of the bands that for many represents an influence, and for other pioneers of the San Francisco area from which other legendary names would come, and now in 2022 it literally comes… Will Put The World Burn! Conexión Rock Radio once again engages in conversation with Sean Killian, eternal vocalist of the band Vio-Lence who are living a great moment in their career with the release of their EP called Let the World Burn, which was released on March 4 through on Metal Blade Records, and represents new material since their last album Nothing To Gain released in 1993. Vio-Lence in addition to Killian on Vocals is complemented by Perry Strickland- Drums, Phil Demmel and Bobby Gustafson- Guitars, and Christian Olde Wolbers- Bass. Sean shares with all of you the experience of recording new material in a pandemic situation, the changes that the band has experienced in recent years with its lineup changes, curiosities in its discography and interesting news that the band has contemplated shortly with several tours in various cities of the United States and surroundings. Make yourself comfortable, and enjoy this interesting read with a beer and some sandwiches and get to know first-hand everything that Vio-Lence has for you soon! Conexión Rock Radio: Hi Sean, how are you! I hope all is well at home and once again a joy to talk to our readers about all the activity that Vio-Lence has in his camp this year, welcome!
Sean Killian: Hello Johonny, after a good time we meet again in another pleasant conversation for the fans of the band in Central and Latin America, thanks for the good wishes, and ready here to talk my friend, thanks for your interest as always in Vio -Lence CR: Thanks Sean, how have things been for the band in recent months, have you been able to do live shows there in California or do the restrictions continue until everything is controlled? SK: That depends on the city or county where you plan to play, for example, in Sacramento and Alameda both points are big cities, and Alameda has lifted restrictions only that they ask you for your vaccination records to make sure everything is fine, while in Sacramento In recent days they have lifted the restrictions on the use of masks, so for us and the rest of the population that is good news. CR: And speaking of good news, we have this that we want to share in this report, Vio-Lence released his EP Let the World Burn on March 4 through Metal Blade Records, what reactions have people had with this material that the first in which the band releases in many years?
SK: It was a decision that I discussed with the rest of the band and proceeded to make a new EP with an open mind in trying new things, although we wanted something classic from the old Vio-Lence but with a more current touch, something that was in the vein from Eternal Nightmare or Oppressing the Masses, and we thought about how much time we've spent doing nothing since Nothing To Gain which was almost 30 years ago, and we thought when all the ideas were ready that this would really pay off in this comeback , and we know that people once they've listened to the album will say “this is Vio-Lence” and compare that with more freshness. It will be satisfying for us to see those reactions to the new material. CR: Speaking of that big hiatus, we imagine you guys felt pressure to release something new, and now with this EP out on the streets the band now has a bit of peace of mind (laughs). SK: The truth feels good, although in reality we had contemplated doing several songs and with the commitment to make an album with 10 or 12 songs, so we all thought about where we could start well with the recording project, we arrived at the studio and we started to write the songs and everything began to flow in a quite adequate way, when everything was going very well, the Covid arrived and that took us by surprise, despite the confinement and distancing we continued recording everything in our homes, and a certain moment came when that we would begin the practices of the new material to be prepared with the shows that were being programmed at that time, despite the difficulties we consider that everything went very well and we all left happy, as you know I went through a complicated moment in my life being sick and wanted to return to the stage again, for which I am grateful to all the people who have given me their support, in the same way to several musicians who have fenced in to give their support, and now that everything is ready, we can't wait to get back on the road and play for everyone. CR: With this EP, people have high expectations that, if the band released an album this year, seeing that Vio-Lence becomes more violent and renewed.
SK: We come with a strong commitment in all aspects, especially with the composition. Being the one who composes and contributes to the lyrics, I was looking for the attitude within Thrash Metal to be felt in them and to avoid committing to the excesses that many bands use in their resources that in the end would look at it as something generic. We do not try to focus on people's feelings since we reflect in our lyrics situations related to death, violence, society and a bit of humor, and that has opened many doors for our musical approach to be hard and direct in proposal. and that's what we offer and that's what people get, and they expect that from Vio-Lence, you know, it's Thrash Metal, nothing more than that. CR: For this EP you had Juan Urteaga on Recording, Tue Madsen on Mixing and Ted Jensen in the Mastering, what impressions does the band have of the work they contributed in the studio? SK: The entire recording would begin as a capture process where all the members submitted to pressure to give our best capabilities individually, both Juan and Madsen and Jensen knew that something interesting would come out of all this seeing the experience they have had with other bands in the past. We all had a set amount of time to record our parts, with me on vocals, Perry on drum tracks, Christian on bass, while Phil and Bobby handled guitars. We felt a lot of pressure to the point of feeling angry, but that made us focus more on getting the shots right, so they took care of doing the mixes and sending all the progress that was made at the time to know what feedback they could get from us if we needed any change or everything was fine until then. Seeing the entire advanced process before the final mix, they sent us 8 different mixes of how the album should sound, and when we had a decision, we were all satisfied with the result, and we consider that we all got fully involved to do things well done, and that didn't take us long to put everything together when we were recording the songs, I even consider that it improves many things for this new material. The production and the mix were determining points for both the band and the producers to end up happy. We felt that we had given everything there and we knew how to dominate the environment that we created when we recorded this EP, to the point of considering this as a perfect process where Madsen and Jensen completely cleaned the tracks so that the mastering sounded optimal in what they found in the studio in a period that included three stages, and that for us was an exam that we passed. CR: Something that will attract attention in this EP is Gato Negro, we believe that it is the first time in the history of the band that they use a title in Spanish, what did Sean get the idea with this song in particular?
SK: That's right, Johnny, the title is in Spanish because I was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's Black Cat, so when I finished the song it was originally written as Black Cat and I saw that the lyrics were very good until Phil suggested I change it to Gato Negro since it sounds much better there (laughs) CR: The band since its return at the end of 2019 would count on the contribution of Bobby Gustafson and Christian Olde Wolbers, how do you feel to now have these two talented musicians in this new incarnation for Vio-Lence?
SK: They are both great in my point of view, from the moment we were preparing to come back as a band I felt that changes were necessary, and the first one to appear was Bobby and we were wondering at first if he was available to fill that position, and he He said yes, since we were friends for a long time. Since we started making the changes, we considered that we should all be known to each other and try to have the best possible chemistry so that we all worked as a band, and those, far from being a cohesive relationship, were very good for all of us, since we thought in the same way. way and in the direction that we should take from there, Bobby has brought very good ideas on the guitar and we have exchanged things both in practice and in the writing and recording process, and I think he is a great guitarist who combines different styles and with Phil we have the perfect duo of guitarists in this lineup. Then Christian appeared who is a fan of the band and has played many years with Fear Factory, since he realized that we had an opening he came looking for us and practiced with us, and we thought we now have the perfect guy, and when we were all together we had in our environment different personalities that fit perfectly, we were 5 people who thought in one way or another and seeing Christian exploiting his abilities on the bass reaffirms that it was a wisely perfect choice. CR: With this EP you mark the beginning of a new history of the band with Metal Blade Records.
What impressions do you have on Vio-Lence being part of a legendary label like this? SK: As a band we feel good because Brian (Slagel) has been part of the Thrash Metal scene since the beginning of the 80's and he decided to make an independent record label that would become for him and his staff a fighting experience. and success within the industry, especially business. To speak of Metal Blade is to refer to the fact that it is a label with many strengths and with a staff with whom you can feel comfortable in all aspects, from the aspects of administration, product quality management, agendas and work programs, I think that I've done a lot of interviews in my life especially with this label, and those who handle press do a fantastic job of giving you as much exposure as possible to the press around the world, I must mention that the team of people who handle social media and who produce the videos for the bands do a great job. I remember how we went through constant changes with labels and that things were a shared two-way effort, that was with Mechanic Records when we released Eternal Nightmare and then making a bigger leap to Megaforce and Atlantic Records with Oppressing the Masses and ending that stretch at Pony Canyon with Nothing to Gain. Now that we are in Metal Blade we look forward to doing a lot with them in the future, and everyone in the band agrees that this is the start of a great relationship with them. CR: We hope this is the case, Sean, because you must have a well-deserved recognition and that many people consider you a cult band.
Currently the band has 37 years of existence, another important event is that Nothing to Gain in 2022 reaches its 30th anniversary. Do you consider taking advantage of the occasion with the release of the EP to do a live celebration revisiting the album or do an anniversary edition with some extra material from that time? SK: There has been a reissue of the album and it came out in 2011 with the guys at Night of the Vinyl Dead Records. Seeing the excellent chemistry that we have experienced in this recent process, the best thing in my personal case is to re-record it with the original line-up, I think that with the different influences that we all have, it could be a project where we can capture more personality and anger at the same time and play this material is a legacy that fans want to get their hands on, and there have been some requests from fans that we do something special with that album. Nothing to Gain deserved to have had a better production, and we knew that in those days we were experiencing complicated problems, especially with the labels that lost confidence in Thrash Metal and went to proposals that sold more in the market, and that generated a complicated situation for everyone in the industry. If the opportunity to re-record that album is given, it will be a mere act of justice for the fans and for the band. The truth is we have to think about it in terms of age (laughs) we would have to rehearse and get in shape as if it were a bicycle exercise, something happened years ago for the celebration of Eternal Nightmare, but we are open to doing similar things in the future , and many people have seen in our albums that their music has served as an influence, we could do this for mere nostalgia, but not live in the past. If we had that mentality it would be very difficult to continue as a band and offer new things to people. CR: Many wonder if Vio-Lence can hold a celebration with former members who have played in their various lineups throughout their history. Is this possible Sean?
SK: When we play the songs live it is important to be in good condition to support a fast set with songs that are difficult to play with many variations and changes, I look at the current lineup as the ideal one that can face those challenges, to include ex members would be a matter of time, but we do not leave the door closed, for now the present incarnation of the band is in a perfect moment and we intend to do interesting things later. CR: At the end of this conversation with you, what message do you want to send to those who have enjoyed this report, and thanks again for receiving me at your home, we hope to be able to talk again about another interesting chapter in the great story that Vio-Lence has starting this year with this new EP, and best of luck with the upcoming tours
SK: Thanks to you Johonny for always keeping an interest in us, and to our fans in South America we have a surprise for them: we will be playing in Chile and Sao Paulo in September, currently our agent is getting as many dates as possible and playing for all of you out there, we invite you to be attentive to our social networks, since we want to see the Latin fans because for us they are special, mainly the youngest 16-18 years old who know our music for the first time. and that they wanted to see us live, and music for everyone is a feeling. Thank you all for the support during all these years, who have had faith with this new release, and we only hope to be able to start several dates in the United States well, we have great expectations that many people will arrive, and it will be a joy to see their faces from stage. Again a hug for all who have read this interview, take care and stay healthy at home, we will see you soon on the road! Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey for their help in making this interview possible, and to Sean Killian for his time on this report.
