VLTIMAS
A Band That Will Live an Epic Year Conexión Rock Radio in its international interviews, as always, offers all of you interesting proposals that we recommend listening to, and the one we present here for lovers of Blackened Death Metal is a candidate for the best in 2024. We established communication to Portugal, and there we spoke with Rune Eriksen, guitarist of the band Vltimas who in 2024 will return to the fray with EPIC, their second album, which will be released on March 15 through the Season Of Mist record label. After leaving a good taste in the mouth with their debut Something Wicked Marches In from 2019, the band has made it clear to their fans that expectations for the Epic release are high, and that critics see in this work the possibly be the best effort in your career. In addition, we talked about the impact that the pandemic had on their plans, the concept that Vltimas offers us with Epic, and that on this new page with their colleagues Flo Mounier on drums and David Vincent on vocals they will seek to live an epic experience with their fans. worthy of being written for history. Conexión Rock Radio: Good morning from Honduras Rune, first of all thank you for accepting our invitation to talk about the current situation and future plans that a great band like Vltimas has for its fans in 2024, welcome Rune Eriksen: Thank you very much Johonny. It's great to finally talk to you. CR: Let's talk about good news that is developing in the Vltimas camp. The band will release their new album called Epic through Season Of Mist in March 2024. Here I must congratulate the band because the production is spectacular and the title of the album fits perfectly. What expectations do you have for this release that will be a candidate for the best of this year?
RE: Well, thank you very much for the comment, I appreciate it and I'm glad that you found the album fascinating. You know, I also think I'm very happy with the final result and I think it's a very strong album, in all aspects. As you may have noticed, unlike the previous Epic, it is a little more direct. It's not as technical as the first one, and it's also a little more melodic, in my opinion I think it will conquer a wider audience once they listen to it due to the fact that there are a little more influences here. It's not just very extreme metal. It also has a bit of heavy metal, it has some heavy, slow and fast passages, so I consider that the album fully complies with the fact that it can appeal to various types of audiences through its songs. CR: It's interesting because at first glance you can feel those elements that you mention, the mix and the instruments sound perfect. In 2019 they would debut the world with Something Wicked Marches In, but as everyone knows the pandemic wreaked havoc and for many bands they had to reschedule their plans. In the case of Vltimas, I don't know if they plan to make a special set with the two albums and recover lost ground in some countries, or do they prefer to focus only on Epic?
RE: I must confess that although we already have two albums we feel that we are limited in material, but the idea is to combine things from both the first and the new album in the shows, although most of them would focus on Epic, and on the other hand The set will depend on the territories where we are going to present. As you know, we have not had the opportunity to play in Central and South America, that is an issue that we have pending for some time, and we are organizing plans to be able to make those visits. In Europe we are going to play practically the new album in its entirety, but we will always seek to provide a balance in the repertoire, and people expect us to play songs like Prevaildus, Total Destroy or Monolith. So for the month of March, once the album comes out and we do the proper promotion, the next step is to go on the road and perform for as many people as possible. CR: Something Wicked was an excellent introduction to the world and many gave it the deserved ovation. Listen to songs like Diabolus Est Sanguis, Prevaildus, Truth and Consequence, Total Destroy to mention examples, but in this new one there are great moments: Epic may make people feel slow and dense, but the real massacre begins when Miserere, Exercitus Irae, Mephisto Manifesto, Scorcher and Spoils of War appears. Are statements that take no prisoners, this is a delicious massacre from start to finish (laughs) and your guitar work is fantastic with the solos and rhythms.
In this case they once again work with Jaime Gomez Arellano in the production, what experiences did they have with him in this new process? RE: With Jaime we have had the honor of working twice for two different productions, but on this occasion we also worked with Jonathan Mazzeo who is of Italian origin, so the production was carried out by two people so that the process of the new album was more complex in every possible way. For us, the recording time in the studio was perfect because it allowed us to work faster and have a little more vision of what we were going to do, and when we saw how things took shape we all felt equally satisfied with all the work. achieved there. With Jaime we have worked on another project called Twilight of the Gods (for the 2013 album Fire on the Mountain) together with Nick Barker and Alan Averill from Primordial. So I have been lucky enough to work with him since 2011 and since then we have been very good friends, and seeing the result we had with the first Vltimas album, I did not doubt that he would take the reins for the production of the second album, we felt that with Jaime things sounded very real and organic. That is the way our music should sound and we feel that Vltimas is on a good path of evolution musically speaking. CR: Now that you have touched on that point that a band must sound natural and organic in its proposal, we know that with Season Of Mist they will release the album on CD and Vinyl, but I don't know if it will also be on Cassette?
RE: I think that with the acceptance that people will have with this new album, I think that if it will also come out in that format, people are seeing the interest that bands have in supporting them with their products, and that process is recurring in the music industry since with this you support them to be able to invest in a future album even though we now live in the digital age with phones and music in the cloud makes everything different. But the physical format has proven its value in the market. We are preparing several products, and we are just waiting for the moment to announce the dates and for people to be able to buy them at each of our concerts. CR: Now let's talk about the context that Epic has, what Vltimas talks to us about in their songs, is this conceptual or do we have stories that are possibly isolated or connected, that you can share with us?
RE: I think there is nothing conceptual there. What we did in this case was as a kind of summary of our experience during the confinement. When we released the first album in 2019, we were supposed to record it in 2020, but things there took on a different meaning in our plans, we felt that due to the circumstances we experienced in those years we decided to reflect all those soundscapes and lyrical content as in a kind of end of the world. All of this generated a change of mentality in the world. Since the world experienced lockdown, the restrictions on moving from one continent to another were a big problem, but looking at things with a cool head, we looked at this as a challenge and a strategy to be able to move forward while the emergency lowered its intensity in other countries. So when the time came to record Epic, we considered that it was the ideal time to do something new, and regarding the question you asked previously about combining the sets of the two albums in concerts, I think it is a good reflection on how we could do something in the future. I believe that we and the people will have a good time when the new album comes out, and make everything bad a memory to live from the present. CR: On this album Rune we have guests, in this case Ype TVS as bassist, and João Duarte on guitars. Do you plan for Vltimas to be a 5-member piece, or do you think a power trio is the best option?
RE: About Ype I can tell you that he has become a prominent member of the band even though he lives in the Netherlands, he always works with us permanently even though he don´t participate in the composition process, but when he arrived at the studio Ype did his work perfectly well with their bass lines and we are happy with the result. As for João, he is still a session guitarist for the band. When I come to the studio with new riffs and ideas I have always thought that with another guitarist things could be different. I am a person open to listening to suggestions and I generally like to take the initiative, I always write everything and sometimes I do that principle of doing everything yourself. In most cases with two guitarists there is more openness in the creative and compositional aspects, but in regards to your question the band remains a three-piece at its core both in writing and composition. CR: Thanks for the response Rune. Regarding Vltimas, we know that its members are all equally recognized for the trajectory they have had in previous years. I would like to know your impressions of how people see you as a super group, and on the other hand, how the band has been able to do a good musical evolution from 2015 to this date
RE: First of all, I think the term “Supergroup” is too big for us. As you know, there are many big names in the music scene but not all of them are great musicians, so that makes things a bit of a strange experience for people who work with well-known people. Nor is there any attempt to categorize this because people have coined the word “Super Band”. I think the only thing we do is make good music and have chemistry between us, and that's the main detail and that makes the difference in belonging to a super group. Sometimes people take this seriously and the truth is that it sounds like we were part of Marvel comics (laughs), and we only do everything in terms of creativity, composition and execution. We are not superheroes, but we are musicians who are quite passionate and we seek to make songs that are memorable, strong, direct and with identity. There are few moments when you have that creative spark, and that is where you must take advantage of that opportunity, and as a result you have songs that stand out for their technical moments. As for Epic, I love the album and I feel proud of what we have created, and we feel that we have worthily closed a circle. You just have to realize that I was born in the 70's and we all grew up listening to Kiss, Judas Priest, Motorhead and even progressive music from that era. So with Vltimas we seek to do something that lasts over time and not just make a handful of riffs or try to make good songs, and that the musician can experience both sides of the coin in creating interesting things like making great songs or taking risks in do something that is temporary. So every time we enter a studio we are focused on each of us giving our part and feeling proud, and when we evaluate all that and see that no more is needed, we simply say here we close the circle. CR: In a few words my good friend: back to basics. That's very interesting of you.
Now, let's talk about the origins of the band for those who know about you for the first time in this interview. How Vúltimas was formed and on the other hand how you and Flo feel about having David Vincent, everyone knows the career he has with bands like Am I Morbid, Morbid Angel and Terrorizer to give examples. Who knocked on the door to say “let's do new and different things” RE: Actually, it was my idea. I was intending to form a new band in 2016, so I decided to experiment with some riffs and see what ideas could come from there. The first person to contact was Flo. And I asked him if he was interested in doing something new. Seeing the chemistry we had in terms of sounds and influences, we became good friends and he was interested in trying new things. The last element there that we needed was the vocalist and David was the right piece in that whole puzzle. I wrote to him and told him that one of my influences was Morbid Angel, especially with that album Blessed Are the Sick. The contact was almost immediate and I accepted the invitation. He considered that everyone being together was the right time to compose and record. The first rehearsals and constant ideas were the result that we had the 3 musicians involved in that project called Vltimas that in the end would become a full-time band. That's how everything came about and to this day we continue together. That was our story. CR: That is very interesting that three musicians seek to change and conquer the world with their proposal. Taking advantage of the lead-up to the launch of Rune, you have released two singles: Miserere and Scorcher. In your opinion, what could be the next song that is potentially a single? For example, if you ask me, Mephisto Manifesto has the potential to be, what do you think about it?
RE: We both agree. That song is one of my favorites on the album, now it would be a matter of waiting for what the label thinks and we'll see how things turn out. CR: As you know, in recent years many bands have preferred to go the independent route, in the case of Vltimas this is their second work with Season Of Mist.
How do you feel that the label is currently supporting you? RE: You know, I first signed with Season Of Mist literally almost 25 years ago. During all that time I have launched several projects with them, so it was very easy to work and have them support me. I know the staff and I have a very good relationship when it comes to treating artists. In addition, the label has a greater presence around the world, especially in Europe, which is considered one of the strongest record companies on the continent, and they work with bands that handle different styles in their proposals, which is a great thing. In our case we were looking for a label that would bet on us within the extreme genre, and thinking about who we could work with was a complicated choice, but from the moment we signed with SOM things were different, we have more activity with their staff, we have more promotion , more interviews, and that generates more interest in people and they see us as a complete band and not as a temporary project. That's where they realize that we have released material a long time ago and begin to investigate the band, its members and our music, and for that reason we are happy, and we hope that our relationship with the record company can last as long as possible. possible and make many albums with them. CR: Now with the album that will soon hit the streets physically and digitally Rune, what is next for Vltimas, are there concerts in Europe or the United States, or do you have any agenda for other continents later?
RE: Next up we have some road shows in Holland, Germany, Denmark and Norway, plus we're playing a show in Greece. In the United States we will share the road with Vio-Lence, after there we will see the doors that will open along the way, we are eager to be able to play later in Central and South America, we have our agents working on it, and we hope to be able to share our music with a lot of people and that we can have fun at various concerts. CR: We believe that people will give a standing ovation to the new album, and will be waiting to go to the concerts that the band announced on their social networks. At the end of this interview Rune, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this report and thank you for the time granted at home, we hope to have you here later to continue the interesting story of this great band such as Vltimas
RE: Thank you very much for your support Johonny, and we invite people to listen to our new album that will soon go on sale, and you can also pre-order it in the Season Of Mist store, and we hope very soon to be able to play for all of you soon. Special thanks to Will Yarbrough of Season of Mist for making this interview possible, and to Rune Eriksen for the time granted for this conversation.
