WARDRUNA
Einar shares details about the composition process of this album that would originally be released in mid-2020, but that due to the worldwide emergency caused by Covid 19 the band decided to do it by the end of January, and that from now on is considered one of the This year's most anticipated releases, and whose success is shared with the talented Lindy-Fay Hella. We invite you to immerse yourself in the musical universe that Wardruna offers with this new album a mental journey through the beautiful places that Norway has, the spiritual peace of its forests and that you contemplate on the horizon the majestic flight of a white crow. Conexion Rock Radio: Einar, Johonny González of Conexion Rock Radio from Honduras, Central America greets you on this day! From here we send our good wishes to you, your family and your bandmates who are well with this emergency, and it is an honor to speak with you and share with our readers about the next news that a great band like Wardruna has for their fans. in this year, welcome! Einar Selvik: Hi Johonny, thank you for your interest in speaking with me this day. CR: Start the interview in congratulating the band on their recent album called Kvitravn which was released on January 22 through Columbia Records.
By the way, album number five in its history. Everything indicates that 2021 will be an important year in the history of the band. What are your expectations on this new Wardruna page? ES: We live in very uncertain and chaotic times, it is difficult to know what is happening around us, and especially in the beginning of 2021. It is a great feeling to start the year releasing new music that is something very positive and something that I am very excited about is good, I hope the world returns to normal and that artists can have their audiences again and do their concerts. That is what we hope for. CR: For many fans this new album represents one of the most anticipated releases at the beginning of this year after releasing successful works like Runaljod Trilogy, and Skald to the point of considering Kvitravn as a fierce challenger in their discography.
Songs like the main album, Gra, Fylgjutal, Munin, Viseveiding, Vindavlarljod and Andvevarljod are the highlights of this work. What is the concept behind this new job? have some connection with Nordic culture or stories that have been kept alive for generations ES: We could say that this album is much more thematic and is in the same kind of universe as our previous works. There has been an evolution both thematically and musically and I would say that this album contains many details, and has much more impact on the human environment, especially in nature. Based on that inspiration is where all our music comes from, and that is where a much more human perspective is reflected in our approach, for that reason we define ourselves as human beings who live from old traditions in modern times, from there many arise religious variants that revolve in relation to nature and that define us all as human beings with different traditions. Wealth in modern times we usually say that the human being has a Consciousness, a body, a spiritual or religious person figure, you also have a soul. In Old Norse culture it's a bit more complicated because it contains so many layers, and it's one of the things this album offers: exploring. Here it is about describing something or giving voice to make some of these concepts that define us as human beings in fragments of those old cultures. CR: Thank you for your answer Einar, very interesting perception about this work, I must ask you how you felt at the end of all that process, and what you said as a sign of relief: this is a perfect album. I must tell you that the previous works are very good to the point that they are considered classics. Many fans will say "the first four albums are very good", while the new work will tell them: hold my beer (laughs).
We have seen very good reactions to the first singles of the album, and it will be much more interesting when people have it so much physical and that they enjoy it through digital platforms. EN: You always have that weird feeling when you launch something new you have mixed feelings. I'd never put out an album that wasn't so happy with it, so I'm very proud and happy with this album, so releasing it when the time comes will be exciting to see how people talk about this work and that's to be appreciated. And the most important thing for now is that I feel satisfied, and that is what I focus on. CR: This is your first album with Columbia Records.
How do you feel being part of one of the most important record companies in the world? ES: I am very happy with the collaboration with Columbia Records, and as an artist I must mention that the main factor is artistic freedom. That is the deciding factor when it comes to everything related to music, the arts and the people of Columbia have the same vision and saw the importance of artistic integrity first and foremost to preserve. So it's just one type of unit and it feels great to be part of such a great professional machinery as the label is. It basically allows me to focus more on music and I think that in this industry, a decent person must have very good people around that you can trust. And I've been very lucky at this for a long time, and little by little I have built a team around the band, I have been patient and I have waited for the right opportunity instead of just jumping from the top. Over the years there have been many offers from different labels, but it is important to me to wait until I feel good and confident that you have the right people, so I am very happy with that. CR: More than eighteen years of career and 5 studio albums ... it's quite a story
Are you satisfied with all that has been achieved to date? Are you looking to experience new sounds in the Wardruna universe? EN: I think if you are true to yourself as an artist and you have patience and then like I said, wait until the right opportunities present themselves instead of just taking every opportunity that comes along, stay true and honest to do well your work and present something whole. I think that's when the right doors open at the end, and I think I'll continue to do it that way to be patient, and I've been very lucky in that regard. I have been part of many interesting projects such as the History Channel with the Vikings series as well as the Assassins Creed Valhalla project. There are very good projects and you just need a good setting where you can show them to many people. CR: Something that will draw your attention that in addition to being a musician you are also an actor, the History Channel series Vikings that has a legion of fans around the world, curiously you also contributed to the soundtrack of the series previously.
Also in soundtracks for video games What impressions do you have of having participated in this series that for many is considered cult? ES: Vikings, it was a very fun project that I was a part of. I've been doing a lot of different things, starting with licensing the music from the first season, and then they wanted for the second season, since they wanted to have my instruments and sounds in the middle of the series, so I started collaborating with the main composer from the Trevor Morris show for the actual soundtrack. So we did it together with using Wardruna's music as well and I was lucky enough to be in front of the camera a couple of times to sing on the TV show which was a good experience working with the actors, like when there is someone in front of the camera you're singing a funeral song or a drunken song or you have that kind of thing, then I also write that for the show so it's been a very interesting and fun journey to be a part of and it's gratifying to see that there are so many people from all over the world who have become fascinated with Nordic culture. CR: Speaking of the cult that people have towards Vikings, you have had reactions when you show up at your concerts and they say "thank you for the music and your performances in the series"
What do you think about this? ES: It is very interesting to know that point about the fans, since they are very connected with music on a personal and deep level at the same time. It's something special to experience, like meeting people who say thank you for the music, which has been a great help to them on a personal level, as it makes them connect with nature and with themselves in the end. That is, of course, great to experience something that I am very grateful for from the fans. CR: We know that this work was going to be released on June 5, 2020, but due to the pandemic you decided to postpone the release to January 2021.
Being a musician and part of the band, were you aware that this emergency could affect the investment of the album? ES: Of course, it was very disappointing when we had to postpone the album, we had to cancel the tours, and such a process takes many years of planning and everything disappears in a second. When the pandemic came and everything was paralyzed it was disappointing, we looked at how many challenges it implied with a situation of that magnitude and I was worried. Despite all the negatives it would be great to be able to support the release of the new album with concerts and meet the fans etc, it is difficult to know how much the success of the new album will affect, but what the world would be like at this point, so I I stay, I choose to be hopeful, constructive and focus on the things that I can control so that I can make the best of the situation that is my main focus for now. CR: Currently the band is made up of two musicians, in this case you and the beautiful Lindy-Fay Hella.
We know that you have musicians for your live shows. Have you contemplated looking for musicians for a stable lineup or do you see that a two piece is best for the band? ES: In fact, some of these musicians accompany us on stage and most have also contributed to the studio with some albums, but I know it is good that some of them have been with us since 2009 and it was not easy to find people to play. these instruments, especially at the beginning, but now I am more and more interested in them, for that reason we have had a very stable line-up throughout that time, and they are a fantastic group of people who are dedicated to playing everything very well on their instrument, and that with their sound they keep alive the traditions within the traditional folk music in Norway and, therefore, and for both the musicians who work in the studio and the fans in the live shows they generate an interesting result in our lives, and everything This trip has brought us together, to the point that I can say that this lineup, far from seeing them as musicians, I look at them as a family. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans to tour Europe, the United States or Latin America in the coming months or in 2021, or are you waiting to reschedule pending dates?
EN: That's right. At this point we have several tours in both Europe and the United States and we have also been working on traveling to Latin America, but we have to wait until things get safer, but I can promise you that sooner or later when the world returns. back to normal we will definitely start working on returning to Latin America, we know that there are many fans waiting to see us in their countries, and we are promising to travel and do concerts there. CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for taking the time to do this special report on Conexion Rock Radio. EN: thank you very much for inviting me Johonny, a pleasure to have talked with you. My message to the fans around the world, and especially to the public in Latin America, not to wait, as I said before we are planning to do several dates once all this is normalized, and it is a promise to all of you that soon we will see each other again. all on one stage. CR: Einar, thank you for your time! Best of luck to you and Lindy with this new album! We look forward to speaking with you again in the future! Have a perfect day at home! EN: Same for you and greetings to all our fans around the world!
