A Victorious Mobocracy Conexión Rock Radio presents you with a new proposal with a classic spirit, but with a breath of fresh air whose sound seeks to reach the farthest corners of the world whose premise is to conquer new audiences and make new fans. In our tour around the world we arrived in Philadelphia, United States, and we talked with our guest in the report: Wax Mekanix who shares with all of you his story, and the great moment he´s experiencing in his career with the release and very good reception of Mobocracy, which was edited in a special format and with extra material, which will be a true delight for his fans, thus guaranteeing a great start to his career as an artist. In this interview we talk about the details of this material that was previously released in EP format and the reasons for the release of a special edition, the pros and cons that Wax and his bandmates experienced during the pandemic, the concept behind Mobocracy , and especially of the future that he seeks to materialize in an adventure through several countries taking his music to the masses, being the spokesman for a Victorious Mobocracy. Enjoy this reading with the music of our guest, and take out your drink and sandwiches, and find out about his proposal here. Conexión Rock Radio: Wax, thank you for the time you give us back home, and it is an honor to have you here in this conversation where we will share with our readers the story and immediate plans you have with your interesting proposal for 2022, welcome! ! Wax Mekanix: Thanks for having me, I really appreciate the opportunity to be in front of your audience Johonny. CR: On the contrary, Wax, thanks for allowing me to echo what you currently do.
How has it been for you to appear again at festivals and play in various places after these two and a half years after this forced break in 2020? WM: Well, from 2020 to this day, as everyone knows, there have been no concerts in a formal way and with a massive presence, and the best thing for musicians is to take advantage of doing several things to determine the right moment to return to the stage. In my case, I have been rehearsing with my band and preparing a concert schedule for the beginning of 2023, and these concerts will be in person, since during this entire period for obvious reasons due to the pandemic nothing could be done at all, some bands have taken advantage of in doing concerts online or doing presentations in completely reduced spaces, going out into the street and playing the acoustic guitar is what has been done in recent days, besides that the pandemic did not allow us to do anything, the best thing was to start to focus our energies on preparing projects for next year, whether in various cities in the United States or in other places around the world, that will depend on the moment and the conditions that arise, but it will be a fun experience to play again for people, so if there are no inconveniences all this would start at the beginning of February. CR: And speaking of a light at the end of the tunnel, there is Mobocracy, your album that recently came out in its deluxe edition, which was released a few weeks ago, and which you are currently promoting in several places.
How have you felt about the general reception towards this new material? WM: First and foremost is that I am really pleasantly surprised by the sheer amount of music being released every day I think and I might be a bit wrong but my understanding is that there are around a hundred thousand songs released every day on the internet. all over the world so for me to even get a response is a surprise plus to have a positive response for an artist like me is unexpected and at the same time it excites you. Overall, I've gotten a really positive response from people who have been following me for a long time have gotten my music noticed by critics and got good feedback from them, and so far the response has been favorable upon the release of the album, as I said at the beginning, things like this excite an artist, and I'm grateful for the support people have given me so far, standing out in these times has been a great challenge, especially finding traction within this music landscape, and this excites me and pleases me at the same time. CR: For the people who discover your proposal through recommendations or accidentally bump into the networks, they will think that your music will be the key so that you can be recognized in far away places, it may be surprising for you that you receive messages from countries that you would never think would listen to your music. What do you think about this?
WM: During all this time I have tried to keep my own style of inspiration and composition for the songs, all of that I do for myself, and I have been releasing various things to the fans both physically and digitally, and trying to find a audience that is interested in what I am doing to make all this make sense, I have started this particular journey to make music and see how people respond to it, for that reason the record company has bet to achieve a greater reach to promote my music , that way we measure results to see if that works or change some strategy. I recently released several EPs, the most recent one is called Blunt, and now with this album in its deluxe edition, I was looking to bring several things together in a single point to keep the interest of the audience, and we'll see once the tours start, we'll possibly be preparing some surprises that will be revealed later. CR: Something you have mentioned with these EPs Wax, is that there is also an EP with the same name as the album but this was released in 2020, at that time the album had few songs, it was your initiative or the Electric Talon Records label to include more material so that more people could listen to it around the world?
WM: That is a great question, on that point I will try to be as brief as possible. About the songs that appeared on that EP as you mentioned, there are 6 that appear, after that singles would be released and I had a collaboration with Troll Teeth in which each one would contribute 3 songs to do a Split. After this I decided that it was best to put together this material on the one hand for purely commercial reasons, on the other hand, to give it a creative approach, that way Mobocracy and Blunt would be like a conversation that would seek to provide a thread of continuity with the audience, so that way we sought to combine the acoustic and exotic part with the more direct sound of traditional rock, so we saw in this a perfect opportunity not to divide that, but to put everything together. Seeing that idea, the friends of Electric Talon approached me and suggested that the album be printed in physical form, since it was predestined to have a great acceptance with the fans. This is how the idea of the deluxe edition for the album would come out and we added several things to make the content worthwhile for its market value, such as remixed versions and alternative mixes of some songs, from my point of view I was looking at this project as an evolution as an artist in which I could express in my proposal both lyrically and musically and make all of that sound different, and doing this project was worth it in the end. CR: Now that you mention it, when listening to this Wax material, people will think that this release offers two interesting sides of you as an artist: the acoustic side, but also the electric side, generating a perfect balance. WM: That's right, Johonny, they are two universes that come together, I want my proposal not to be monolithic, since I am an artist who wants to experiment with many things, for example, I have my playlists on Spotify to be able to inspire myself and offer the best from me to the audience, and that they know a little more about my music and the core from which I take those inspirations. Although everyone knows me in my career with Nitro, I look for my proposal to have that essence of traditional Heavy Rock like Led Zeppelin for example, and I look for my sound to have that organic sound, and for me the music that was made in the 70s I consecrate many artists, in every way I seek to simplify all that through my songs and to be able to express it in the same way that these people did years ago, as I said before I seek to present something original and not monolithic. CR: The experience in the studio was complicated, did you have more ideas or did you feel comfortable in the process?
WM: The most important thing here is that I prepare the ideas very well before going into the studio and give them a definitive form, one of those cases was with Victorious, I recorded the demo on my phone and sent it to my guitarist Tom Altman and the The result in the end was an interesting look at how the song begins and develop it to give it its greatness as heard on the album, once we decided to start recording the song we knew it brought heaviness, power and a thunderous force to through its chords, and as musicians we had to shape it through a strong structure with chord changes. It was like living a tribal celebration experience, and the production played an important role in making Mobocracy sound as we are presenting it, Working with Maxim "Lectriq" Laskavy in the studio marked a different way of doing and composing things, it gave a more technical approach to recording, it was fun but interesting at the same time, and we were able to refine the ideas based on Vague and formless ideas, all that would be born from various acoustic chords and then take them to the electric part. There are two versions of this song, and presenting them on this album makes it possible for you to compare the music as a painting with refined touches. All of that started from writing phrases on a napkin to making sketches of how the song would go from start to finish, also experiencing experimentation with analog equipment and feeling that energy doing all this old school is when you realize that things really getting alive. CR: For the production of this album you had several musicians who gave shape and character to the songs on this record. What impressions do you have of the contribution they made in the studio?
WM: There is a saying that you should do the best you have at hand. The truth is that I have a great performance playing with other people because you improve your skills and have a better vision as a musician, for that reason I seek to surround myself with musicians who are better than me but who come from other genres, for example, working with Pete Tramo as sound engineer made basic instruments like drums sound perfect, likewise he did a great treatment for bass and guitars. I was also able to count on the participation of John Hazel who was a partner for several years in Nitro, my previous band, in contributing many ideas both in lyrics and music on the track Mad World. All the people who participated in the album gave great talent so that technically an adequate sound could be obtained for each of the songs on the album, and that each one at the moment of executing their parts would shine with their own merits. Working with them was a relief as a musician and at the same time a great help in the recording studio. Actually, I don't currently have a band, since the lineup allows me to rotate with several people and do completely different things, moving away from the style that was previously done with Nitro where there were four people. Making this album I consider it a mission statement, and allowing me to do a new approach as a solo artist where you can bring a different attitude to the songs that have been recorded. Another producer I had the pleasure of working with was Machine, who has unique skills and I consider him an architect as far as sound is concerned, plus his reputation has led him to work with very important bands like Lamb Of God, and I believe that having people like him make the process in technical aspect enormous. And I am really excited to share impressions and experiences with all of them because in short I am the one who has the ideas for all my songs, but they all execute and perfect them, with that we strengthen a link within a chain that should not be break. CR: With all this chemistry that you have had with these people throughout the process, do you consider that they can accompany you on the next tours or are you looking to form a band with a stable lineup?
WM: There are two elements that are separated in the facets of an artist, one is the live performance and the other is the recording, so I see it as two separate things, making records is something different and unique. And my goal is to perfect everything and make the process go very well, for that reason I have surrounded myself with good and talented musicians, and this has been an important part of this journey that I have started years ago and that has culminated with the release by Mobocracy. The intention is to have these people for some live performances, and I want these people who have collaborated with me to have the recognition they deserve, they are selfless people and wonderful musicians. Now, for a lineup, I'm looking to make a band with four people to maintain the continuity of making more albums and more performances in the coming years. Once the line-up is established and the songs are rehearsed in order to start the concert schedule that is being organized, and when that moment arrives we will offer people an athletic but tribal experience at the same time because we want the songs to sound heavy on stage and make all the instruments sound perfect, from there we will offer the public a new look and a better experience of how the songs should sound live once they have enjoyed the album at home, we seek to make a big difference between the studio and a concert to be able to continue making new music, reinvent ourselves and make every song we play at a festival or in a concert hall so that people enjoy it from start to finish just like we do. CR: For people who know about your proposal for the first time, what themes do you talk about in your lyrics?
WM: Talking about Mobocracy and the concept that is currently being presented goes back years, in 2015, it is well known to all that the world has gone through serious political and economic changes and the rest of the countries are no exception, for example, I have traveled several times to Latin America, and especially Central America, and the same problems are reflected in South America, Europe and including the Middle East. Something that is common in all people is that we are affected by the same problem: social, political and economic pressures, so by assimilating that information I could instantly reflect everything that happens in the world through letters, and to my From my point of view, I was forging a path that began with the Mobocracy and Blunt EPs respectively, frankly I felt that this special edition, by putting all that material together, reflected the current situation that not only the United States is going through, this is applicable throughout the world, for that reason. For this reason, I base myself more directly on the American reality because I am a musician born in that country. I knew that from 2016 to 2022 the changes were many, but more in 2020 when the pandemic hit the world, I consider that it was a more turbulent period that we experienced, and as a person and as an artist I could not be indifferent to it, we felt that we lived in a mass government that implied in this process living with chaos, and that led people to get angry and feel dissatisfied with what was happening, all this in a general perspective led us to face micro personal problems, and with this album I was able to capture that and many more stories, and that was my goal. CR: In your solo career, have you had any experience of traveling outside the United States in recent years before the pandemic forced us to stay locked up at home?
WM: I have had the opportunity to travel most of the time by bus, and I have been able to travel to other cities in the United States and of course I have gained experience in making myself known in Europe, and we are contemplating doing new tours in several countries on that continent. In the same way I have gone several times in Mexico and incognito in several countries of Central and South America. Walking through those streets I have seen all the informal environment of their cities, the corners and seeing places to organize concerts, going to these places can be a fun but also dangerous experience, due to the fact that a stranger comes to invade your space to the people of those countries standing on the scene, opening your guitar case and playing in the streets, seeing the reaction of the people familiarizes you to generate that contact when presenting yourself in a concert venue and offering the best for them although one wishes that these presentations could last as many people as possible and enjoy quality time with the people who appreciate my music. CR: You are currently part of the Electric Talon Records family of artists, how was the contact between you and the label? WM: The contact there was amusing because everything happened in a way that was not very organic. The most important thing here is that the studio and the label are both in Philadelphia, and in order to make sure of many things I went to talk to the owner of the label and he knew about my career in Nitro and we talked about the songs that appeared on Mobocracy , and here the great advantage is that we both lived in the same city, and upon listening to the material he told me that he was very interested in working with me and being able to release an album, so everything would start to take shape from that moment and we were focused on fulfilling the established deadlines to have the mission of recording an album and offering based on the production a quality product that is liked by the people, something that in the end of all we were able to comply and both the label and I are satisfied by the good results both in the promotional campaign, the constant visits and reproductions on platforms as well as the good sales that have been generated. CR: The band released the album on CD, in the same way there is worldwide distribution through platforms and other streaming services, do you have any plans for Mobocracy to come out on vinyl in the future? Have the fans made these kinds of requests to you through the networks?
WM: Something that should be taken into account that Electric Talon is a small label, but despite their budgets they supported me to record and produce the material at the beginning of the pandemic, which was surprising to me, in short it was open to be able to contribute ideas and adapt to new technologies within this process, despite the fact that I am an artist of legal age, I have lived from the classic, the vintage and the analog, and I felt that recording this album gave me the sensation of reliving everything that what happened in the 80's with cassettes and vinyl, and then in the 90's with CDs and then the arrival of the digital age where he would make several important changes for the industry, and the main idea is to adapt to the public demands for a particular format. Electric Talon has known how to fit its model into the business and we were anxious to be able to do everything with this project, and we considered doing a crowdfunding to make that possible and we looked for ways to make a print run on vinyl, because everything is an analysis of economics, I'm someone who loves old school stuff, for example, I recently bought the vinyl of a band called Crobot, who play Heavy with Funk, even though vinyl is a bit expensive we appreciate what they do. I have nothing against digital, currently things sound great, I have a lot of CDs in my collections, I stream and download all kinds of things, so we're not locked into making vinyl in the future, and we'll wait for that to come along chance. CR: Already with a great album like Mobocracy on the streets of Wax, what's next for you? Will you focus on giving more promotion to the release or the next step is to prepare the tours for the next few weeks? WM: My plans for next year is to release a new album, which is already in its final process, so there are only a few mixing sessions left to give the final touches and be able to announce it later. For now we are going to prepare to make the first presentations of the album for the first months of 2023 in various parts of the United States, and with some luck we will see if we can make trips to other countries, make sure that our shows are profitable in the places where We plan to visit later and while that moment arrives I continue to make new ideas for more albums in the future, that is a constant as an artist to be able to make more music and to be able to mix this with other fields such as painting and photography, I seek to give a creative push to all The aspects are not necessarily music, so I have kept myself busy during all this time, and also doing interviews, talking with you, for example, about an interesting country like Honduras, makes my proposal reach more people in your region and in other parts of Latin America. I am ambitious to be able to organize tours in your countries, meet new people who enjoy my proposal, work with professional promoters and make next year successful, and thus be open to being able to participate and play in various places, if there is a promoter. interested in me, I invite you to contact me, and I will be very happy to be able to play for all those people and have a great time with all of them. CR: At the end of this interesting conversation with you Wax, what is the message you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this interview, and I thank you for the time you have given me there at home to do this report, may this be the first but not the last talk that we will have to give continuity to your career as a musician.
WM: I want to thank you Johonny for the invitation, I am very excited and delighted that you have invited me and that you have organized a very good interview for you, these are things that an artist values, we should be proud of our cultures and not just that our countries are divided by borders, we as people must transcend those borders and unite for a common good in various parts of the world, be agents of change in a society that lives in convulsion between the economic and the political, that friendship can unite the people, and I am very grateful to all the people for supporting me in these difficult times that we have survived through the pandemic, I can only tell you to take care of each other, that things will improve later, stay positive because in this situation we are all brothers and sisters, he sent a hug to all of you and take care Special thanks to Davide Pulito from The Metallist for his help in conducting this interview, and to Wax Mekanix for the time granted on this occasion.
