W.E.B.

On our way we reached Attica, in Athens Greece. And we present to you W.E.B. or also known as Where Everything Begun. They are a band that has already established its career in the national and international scene, and they present us their production number 5 called Colosseum, which was released on November 19, and which marks the debut of the band with the prestigious Metal label. Blade Records. Adding to this important novelty, the band presents us with new changes in its line-up, being Sakis Prekas- Vocals and Guitars, Sextus A. Maximus- Guitars, Nikitas Mandolas- Drums, and the incorporation of the talented Hel Pyre- Bass and Vocals the present incarnation where they have faced the challenge of meeting the expectations of their fans around the world, and definitely overcame every obstacle in Colosseum. This time we talk with Sakis and Helina, and they share with all of you the important moment that the band lives, how they have lived hard times during the confinement caused by the pandemic crisis, the arrival of Helina to the band, the concept that they offer us and the invitation to make themselves comfortable and witness a Triumphal Return to the Colosseum Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Sakis and Helina! It´s an honor to be able to speak with you on this day and I send you my good wishes that you all are well there in Greece, and in this report, we will talk about what is important. news that W.E.B. has for all its fans there at home and of the new ones here in Latin America this year, welcome! Sakis: Thanks Johonny, it is also an honor to talk to someone on the other side of the world Helina: Hello Johonny, greetings from Greece and thanks for the good wishes for us and we also wish you the best for all of you back home. CR: Thanks folks! I begin my interview with you to find out how the artistic conditions are there in Greece in relation to the pandemic that has affected us long ago ... are there concerts with restrictions, or is the scene already reactivated? Sakis: It is a strange situation that we have here because our government seems that they are not understanding very well what is happening. Currently we have restrictions, but they all contradict a lot on what should and what not to do, in the same way there has been a strong division with people who are for and against vaccines, and that as artists has given us problems, it is in fact quite a crazy and strange situation at the same time. Helina: During all these months we have not had any live shows, we have been talking about various details with the authorities about everything Sakis mentioned, the idea is that soon we will return to the stage and we hope that everything is unrestricted, so hopefully We will all return to normality so that people enjoy what we have in our hands. CR: Let's talk about good news, and in the same way congratulate you on the release of your fifth album called Colosseum, which for many will be a candidate for the best of 2021 and which was released on November 19 through Metal Blade Records , what are the expectations of the band with this new work?
Sakis: The expectations are always the same as we had with our previous work which was Tartarus (released in 2017). Those were from that album until now the steps to achieve balance one step further within our music, and it was all the result of an effort by four people who wanted to go one step further, and we achieved it with Colosseum, with this we want to spread our message and go as far as possible. CR: What impressions do you have of launching Colosseum in such an unusual situation that we have suffered almost 2 years without tours or concerts around the world? Helina: Well let's hope this doesn't last long, we've already booked a few shows for next fall and will be sharing the stage with Fleshgod Apocalypse. We are working on getting as many dates as possible for the first half of 2022, so we hope everything is back to normal and we can't wait to play and hit the road again. CR: For this new album there are new changes in the line-up, we have Helina or Hel Pyre on bass and vocals. What impressions do you have of the contribution that Helina has made to the band on this new album?
Sakis: Helina has had an outstanding job with the bass lines and she also have a very special talent for singing, and since we started the process it was suggested to have an album with two combined voices. Already at the time that the songs were taking shape and capturing the voices there we saw that it was an excellent idea. I believe that Helina has made an important contribution, since the rest of the band has seen this with good eyes and this is one more evolution in the history of the band that we hope can last as long as possible. CR: Helina, we know that you also have other projects there in Greece like Afterblood, and that you are the vocalist. What impressions do you have on being part of W.E.B. being low and vocal?
Helina: For me this new page with them has been like a pleasant welcome. Everything has been focused on a work environment of four people having excellent team chemistry and, in this pandemic,, we achieved several goals such as playing on stage again and I look at the band as a second family, for me being in W.E.B. it is pleasant and exciting at the same time. CR: For Colosseum they have the presence of talented musicians like Christos Antoniou in the orchestrations, and Dinos Prassas who has worked on the mastering of this release, both by certain members of the band Septicflesh.
What impressions do you have of working with Christos and Dinos in this process? Sakis: Since we began to shape the ideas for this album, we all wanted to have the participation of Christos Antoniou, since we have been friends for a long time and we suggested that he participate in the project, and everything was easy for everyone since he agreed to be with us and we are proud that your work appeared in this work. And we look at him as a great person who has managed to elegantly combine orchestral arrangements and metal. In the case of Psychon (which is Dinos' artistic name) he has worked with us since Tartarus, he is a very good friend of the band and we have a friendship for years. Seeing the tremendous result that we had in this working relationship, we do not hesitate to count on him again, and I can tell you Johonny that things in the studio now with two albums under his belt with us have been very easy and he has generated a very natural environment within our sound. CR: With Colosseum the band debuts with Metal Blade Records, how does WEB feel about being part of one of the most important labels around the world now?
Helina: We are huge fans of this label, as they have defined heavy metal for many years. We are extremely proud to be part of their catalog of artists, for the band this is a great step in their career, and we look forward to working with them for as many years with more releases. Sakis: Many bands long ago began their struggle to find a label where they can make their history, many hope that the label will do everything for them, now times have changed and also the way of working within the record industry. About Metal Blade we have very high expectations, I can proudly say as a musician and as a member of a band that is now my label, and we have excellent communication with his work team, despite the distance factor, we always keep in touch to find out what it would be. our next move, they ask us what they need either in terms of international promotion or to work on a video. And for W.E.B., Metal Blade, that place where there are enthusiastic people to support the scene all over the world is now our home. CR: Here we have several highlights that people will want to hear at a concert, tracks like Dark Web, Pentalpha, Dominus Maleficarum, Exaudi Luciferi and December 13th.
On the cover, everything indicates that ancient tradition, whether Roman or Greek, of the ancient emperors who sentenced gladiators or prisoners to die in the Colosseum, there were even bloody shows where lions devoured the losers. Sakis, do you have any details that you can share with us about it? Sakis: Let me explain it to you this way. If you look at the symbolisms on the cover, the title of the album refers to the history that through time has reflected the image of the Colosseum, which was an arena where people attended to see violent shows, and they loved to be witnesses to it. It's not really a concept album, it can be interpreted from different points of view. CR: Seeing the success they will have with the new album; do you think Colosseum can define a sound pattern for future releases? Sakis: I would tell you not 100%, because each album brings a way of expressing themselves, and that is why bands seek to experience new things and not maintain a linear sound or that we use recycled ideas to fill empty spaces, I believe that there would not be a formula in our music but our expression as artists is present. CR: Many consider this album as a classic and an experimental work due to the fact of having Helina, the contributions of Christos make this work as a strong contender in the discography of the band, what do you think of this?
Sakis: As I mentioned before, it is a mere matter of how to express things, on an experiment I think that things happened naturally and that is how this album was born. We just decided that we never think of surprising people, let's do this to be further away from them, for some bands doing that kind of thing might encourage a better image, but it's a very bad idea. We are like garage bands, we make all those elements come together in the best way, and as musicians seeing all of that together is great. CR: W.E.B. for or against streaming concerts ... comments ...
Helina: We recently did a broadcast of one of our rehearsals prior to the release of the album, we know that the shows that are done online are very different from the face-to-face ones. From my point of view, concerts with people should come back as long as everything returns to normal. It would be very rare to interact or play in front of a camera when you expect a real reaction and that is where everything becomes cold and mechanical, although people have the last word in knowing how to select something they want to enjoy. I don't think we would do this for money even though you have a ticket in hand and you can access a virtual experience it will never be real like a concert with people, we definitely need to enjoy it with people. CR: Does the band with this new album currently have upcoming performances in the remainder of 2021 or are they scheduling dates for the first months of 2022?
Sakis: For now we are trying to schedule shows for the first of next year and we will be sharing the road with our friends from Fleshgod Apocalypse, and as I told you a while ago Helina we are like many bands preparing a work schedule for festivals and visits to other countries outside of Greece. We know that we all suffer a confinement for many months, but it is time for everything to be left behind, and with our agents they are in constant search to get as many places as possible and play for the people. CR: Friends, what message do you want to send at the end of this interview? In the same way, I want to thank you for the time you gave us for Rock Radio Connection.
Helina: Thank you very much Johonny for inviting us. We really hope that next year things will go back to normal as we will have live shows we will travel and we will be presenting the new songs as we miss the stage and especially the fans, so hopefully in the next few years we will look at this as bad. I dream to enjoy a full-fledged concert without fear. Sakis: Thank you Johonny for this interview and to the people who really support us, not only us, but who also support the musicians in these difficult times and who give their money to buy the official merchandise of the bands because thanks to that they are ours. income during these almost 2 years of crisis and we are very grateful to all of you. Also, to those who are beginning to know us in this conversation, we will only say that we hope to see you very soon on a tour of your countries. Greetings from Greece, and best wishes to all who take care of themselves at home. Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey of Looters / Metal Blade for making this report possible, and to Sakis and Helina for the time allotted for this occasion.
