Winterfylleth
A Hostile Fate Through Fire If you are one of those who likes Black Metal with lyrics that speak of Ancient British History, Anglo-Saxon Literature, the natural world, and landscapes, we invite you to pay attention to the following band that appears in conversations in our international interviews on Conexion Rock Radio. We present to you from Manchester, UK: Winterfylleth A band that was born in 2007, and that after several years of activity, tours and a consecrated discography return through the front door with their new work called The Reckoning Dawn, which will be released in the first days of May 2020 via, Candlelight Records, and that the band leaves high expectations before this new capitum in his career. Winterfylleth's current line-up is conformed by Simon Lucas- Drums and Vocals, Chris Naughton- Vocals and Guitars, Nick Wallwork- Bass and Vocals, Dan Capp- Guitars, and Mark Deeks- Keyboards and Vocals. This time we talked with Chris Naughton, who gives us details about the production process of the new album, as well as the concept, curiosities within its history and how the band has reached various continents around the world with their sound, fighting against A Hostile Fate Through Fire! Below we share with all of you from this interview: Conexión Rock Radio: Chris, greetings from Honduras, I send you my best wishes for you, your family and bandmates who are well at home for this worldwide emergency that has affected us, and in this special report we will dedicate to our readers of the next news that Winterfylleth has for his fans in 2020, welcome! Chris Naughton: Good day to everyone from Manchester! We are locked up and enduring this confinement that we have already spent more than a month, we hope that over there in America the outlook will be better in the coming weeks, and we repeat our best wishes to you in these difficult times. CR: Start the interview of this day in know what are the expectations that the band has with their new album called The Reckoning Dawn, which will be released in the next few days via Candlelight Records. How do you feel about writing a new page in your story?
CN: I think it's great to create a new album, obviously it's a strange moment to release it, and even more so in the current circumstances, so I think our expectations are that we just want to continue doing good jobs and bring people a little hope, and something for you to listen to while trapped at home, and to appreciate what we have done this year. CR: What details can you share about the new album, is it conceptual or do we have different stories around the tracks? CN: It's something that is always weird about making an album, creating the structures and getting familiar to make an environment so that you can finally give them something to people, and then live their own lives, so I guess, in terms of this new album, the concept is about a change in relation to the times that are coming, and I came up with the idea of assuming how people would be when they try to change the world, maybe we can self-heal some of the divisions in society all that We can get people to think about some of the world's problems in a little more detail, and it's weird that that happens when we land at the same time that the world is being completely changed by a biological threat, or that we never imagined when we sat down. to record this album to think about things like religion and evil that are all over the world. For that reason we can change those things, so I think that just as music brings hope, let's hope that we can influence people. CR: In The Reckoning Dawn are there long tracks like in your previous works?
CN: Yes, there are several long tracks, there are actually some tracks on this album that are the longest we have written, for example Absolved in Fire lasts between 10 to 11 minutes. We have made quite interesting stories there, as a result we had many ideas in both lyrics and music, in this song we talk about how changes can affect people in their lives, especially negative things, when you want to get rid of that it can be a somewhat purifying process burning all the bad, making changes and rising from the ashes like a Phoenix. CR: We want to know if Chris Fielding has produced this new album?
What experiences have left the band to work with him again? CN: Yes, with him we have recorded all our albums except for the first album (The Ghost of Heritage). I think seeing the idea of working with a different producer makes it easier to have a way to keep songs fresh, or to make them sound a little different. I think that's the other side of the storyline: How does it feel to know that someone knows you, and knows what the band sounds like, and who helps you develop your sound? I think there is also a relationship in different types of things, so the producers understand how you play or how you should improve when you are recording in the studio, and some ideas of how you can make the band change their direction for good. Chris is one of my closest friends. From the moment he approached us and began to listen to our material, he understood what we were doing in the studio, and for that reason we have a close relationship with him. So with the experience that both the how the band has achieved through the years, we have maintained an excellent working relationship and at the same time of mutual respect, for that reason we know the direction we decide every time we enter the studio to record a new album.
CR: The band recently recorded at the Bloodstock Festival their first live album The Siege of Mercia, what impressions do you have to see face to face with their fans in this place? CN: It was an interesting show for us, definitely, it was one of the biggest shows we played in the UK, where the known and the underground were mixed, so was our participation in Bloodstock special. There was an attendance of approximately fifteen thousand people who attended, I have nothing to envy compared to commercial festivals that can summon 70 or 80 thousand people, and we decided to put our best in a festival like that, and it was a great moment for us, because it was the right kind of audience and the only place where our comfort zone was. We have worked with the organizers at previous festivals and they always give us preferences for playing in front of the public. As I told you before Chris has been in charge of recording the show, and they involved many technical details where the whole process was easy. Although it may sound curious, many people who were there took videos with their mobile phones, and the sound was much better than we had, but in the end we were satisfied with the live recording at that festival. CR: About the festival we want to know if it was recorded in video format for a future edition on DVD? Any detail that you can share with us CN: The DVD actually came out with the CD, but the best thing at the time was to only release the CD, and we intended to release it separately, and include extra material from previous years, but we asked ourselves: will there still be people who buy DVDs currently? Now the trend has changed, since many bands far from releasing the DVD put their videos on their YouTube channels, as well as extra content, and for that reason we would look at that as an advantage and an initiative that we could take with that resource to hand. CR: Interesting appreciation. We know that the music industry in recent years has undergone changes. From your point of view, do you consider that it is beneficial or harmful that the band can make use of the streaming resource far from the physical format?
CN: That's interesting, I don't know, I think we are in a really strange moment because there are many young people who never grew up with the idea of CDs or vinyl, they don't really understand physical music, and the trend now is with music digital, many people have grown in that format. So you have to find a balance so that young fans can interact like older fans who liked physical products, such as a Cassette, a CD or a Vinyl, in other circumstances if you traveled by taxi to a store you would find yourself with many people buying CDs, and I know this because all the time the market industry has really been changing relatively speaking, with the passage of time many people have lost the taste to buy these formats that have been traditional and that many in nostalgia despite of having returned years ago they could lose validity again. Similarly with Spotify that in a few years it has gained a great preference for those seeking a faster option of saving and time. But I think that's the interesting thing, I think you have several generations that have lived from those experiences, and then there are the people, the Millennials, who are younger than they are who are beginning to listen to music here, and now discovering that they like it the idea of listening to vinyl music, and what the industry has done is to launch Cassettes again, and times change, for people who have been traditional to see this strange, but the best thing is that everyone enjoy music at their own way. CR: Many consider The Hallowing of Heirdom as an experimental album, and daring for being acoustic, what motivated the band to do this interesting project? CN: I guess it's not that unusual for certain types of Black Metal bands to use acoustic music, and I think if you know a lot about the history of all time then we've always been very interested in the British Isles folk culture, and We talk a lot about history, and I think that when you think about the type of music that existed at the time of history we are talking about, you know that it was always acoustic music where different voices, violins, cellos and natural instruments were incorporated, leaving a aside the electric instruments, so I think for the band it was really important for us to try to do something that I suppose what you say is experimental, but that also makes sense for the link because when we released the album we had already released five metal albums and That was already a sixth work for us in make an acoustic album, so when we did it, I think we just wanted to prove ourselves that we could write an atmospheric, emotional and powerful album, but without using the really heavy guitar sounds and the guttural voices or screams, blast beats of the drums, and things like that, that's why the right atmosphere was created, but using different instruments, And I guess it was a really interesting challenge for us, and I think it's definitely helped us on this new album because we learned a lot about ourselves about how to make albums differently. CR: This is your sixth album with Candlelight Records, how do you feel about being part of a label that has supported you for years? CN: It's a good question, it's an extreme music label, and it's known to everyone for the releases of well-known bands like Emperor and Opeth, and there have been good bands over the years. I think working with the same producer is much more difficult than working with a different label for each album. All this influences the relationship that the band has both with the label and the staff that works there, since it is a loyalty type, and you realize that everyone who works there is a big fan of music, I really love these findings, in addition to working for the label, I think they are the kind of interesting people you are looking to work with as long as possible, and that's fascinating. With the band we seek to work as long as possible. The label knows you, and it knows your audience, and it trusts that the band is going to make a great album, so you get great experiences because it's not just giving them some kind of cheap CD in a really nice package that's made of material gold, with stickers and all those kinds of things that people want. We know the people of our generation why we want a CD, and we want interesting products, we want something that is incredible, as well as good music, so when you put on the label that is loyal to you, and you have time you can do some of those things. It has been such a pleasant experience for us over the years, and then you know that we have grown together with them in many ways. CR: Are you proud of all the history you have made with the band so far? Is the band looking experience new sounds for upcoming albums in the future?
CN: Yes, I think you know when you are in the band, you have the need to make music, you always have a project on the go and you feel off, so you know we make plans to record in the studio, we sit down to do the ideas and We go into the studio to release our works, it is a constant cycle that we are always writing songs, and obviously, this is our main band, we focus a lot and in a week we have many ideas for an album already ready, and we are always working on the things to keep them moving, you have to challenge yourself but we have a lot of protests around creating a job but we are in high expectation that the picture will change when May 8th The Reckoning Dawn comes to light and it will stay see people's reactions when they hear it. CR: What is your point of view about the current black metal scene around the world, many on the one hand say that there are bands that reinvent themselves, on the other hand that they are generic, what is the formula for Winterfylleth to make good albums in these circumstances?
CN: The first point, I suppose, I think the global scene is very healthy, but I agree with your question that many bands make the same album every time and I think it will only depend on making an album by commitment to pay their bills, then sometimes you have to rush the material especially with the process of a launch and promotion, if it is poorly managed it involves a loss of balance, and you suffer from taking things too fast and not thinking enough. There are many bands that put their time, work and careers at risk, and we don't want to make the mistakes that many make in releasing an album because we need the money, in our case we challenge ourselves to write interesting things, and then try to find the new accessories In the songs, which is what makes the difference for this new album, I suppose that in some way perhaps due to the fact that they released an acoustic album, it differentiated a lot from the work that you have done as a musician in the past or that you intend to do something in the future, that maybe other bands can learn from that idea and challenge themselves to be self-critical and make sure that writing music that really matches their ambition in their lives. CR: Many bands in recent years have used the tendency to revisit classic live albums, in the case of The Mercian Sphere it is 10 years old in 2020, does the band consider doing something with this album? Or do you prefer to focus on new material or special anniversary edition?
CN: The quick answer is yes, we are doing a special edition that will come out before Christmas. Maybe October or November, so there will be many interesting things in retrospect in those years, although we try to offer new music for everyone. CR: Due to the Covid 19 emergency, do you have rescheduled concerts for the end of this year or the beginning of 2021? CN: Yes, it just isn't what was expected from this situation, and we hope that the landscape will gradually change and that we can soon play some shows. We have some concerts scheduled for the United States in October, so we are hoping that we can do those shows, otherwise it could be at the beginning of 2021, it only remains to hope that this emergency will not continue affecting us as it has been until now CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read this special interview, and thank you for your time in talking on this occasion for Conexion Rock Radio
CN: Thanks to you Johonny for talking on this day, I invite you to buy and listen to the new album this May 8, and we hope you enjoy it to know your impressions, and we hope to see you soon on a tour of your countries.
