Against Evil
Against Evil
Four Warriors Who All Hail The King Exclusive for Latin America Conexion Rock Radio in their international interviews presents for the lovers of the Heavy Metal Classic an interesting band that with the passage of time will become an emerging force, and that we do not doubt that in the future its name shines in the main festivales important around the world of the hand of a great album that will be your letter of presentation to achieve this goal. Ladies and Gentlemen ... We present from India to AGAINST EVIL, a band that is formed in 2014 and that is originally from the port town of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, and that have been released on the sonic map with a single called War Hero, and that would be included in his EP Fatal Assault. Currently the band promotes their first album called All Hail the King via Doc Gator Records have found the perfect platform to expand their sound to several continents around the world. Against Evil is conformed by Noble John in the Drums, Shasank Venkat on the Guitars, M Sravan Chakravarthi on the Vocals and Guitars, and Siri Sri on the Bass and Vocals. In this interview we talked with Sravan for know about his interesting history and the bright future that these Four Warriors who All Hail The King and have as mission to fight a battle to conquer the world with his Heavy Metal. Conexion Rock Radio: Start the interview in congratulating the band for the release of their first album called All Hail the King, to my point of view I would define this album as Just What The Doctor Ordered! It is surprising that in an unsuspected country like India, a band like Against Evil stands out for its own merit, and that makes us turn our eyes towards that country. I want to know how the national and international reception has been with All Hail The King.
Sravan Chakravarthi: Both the national and international reception has been brilliant. We‘ve got packed houses at our gigs in India and people started buying our CDs and merchandise. However, internationally this album has done exceptionally well exceeding our expectations. We have sold many copies of All hail the king excluding the distribution deals and majority of the orders came from America, Parts of Europe, Brazil and Japan. We have signed two distribution deals, one with doc gator records of Switzerland and Into the pit records & Nomade records of Brazil. The album got some stellar following from the fans of Europe, that they are helping us put together our first international tour to Europe in August and September. CR: If the EP Fatal Assault was an excellent cover letter, with Hail they already achieved an international profile.
Do you feel satisfied as a band of the final result for the process of composition and production of the album? How would you define it in your own words? (Despite the fact that the album lasts 36 minutes we are short with the desire for more hahaha!) SC: When “Fatal Assault” happened, it was our first experience of a studio recording. We have done a lot of research on how to record different instruments, vocals, mixing, mastering and there were just a few recording studios in the country which records metal. Composing wise we have come up with some great riffs and complimenting vocal lines as we have all shared influences of similar metal bands. Simone Mularoni of Domination studios who mixed and mastered both our albums also gave a lot of inputs enhancing the quality of the album. All Hail the king was flawless, we were better equipped with the recording techniques and we knew what kind of sound we wanted and that shows in the quality of the album we‘ve produced. CR: We know that Jeff Loomis was a special guest for Sentenced to Death. How was the contact between the band and Jeff for this interesting collaboration?
SC: We’ve been fans of Jeff from ‘Nevermore’ days and we were thrilled to have heard that he is coming to India for a solo tour. Against evil opened to him at the Delhi leg. Despite him being a legendary guitarist he was a down to earth person and we’ve given our EP to him. When we wrote the song’ sentenced to death’ he was the first person that came to our mind for a collaboration. We have written an email and he remembers us, he heard the song, liked it and accepted to play a guitar solo on it and boom it happened… It’s a dream come true for us. CR: Let's talk about the band for those who know it for the first time in this report.
We know that you were formed in 2014 in the city of Visakhapatna, what their musical influences are, and that the current lineup is the same from the beginning: Noble John on Drums, Shasank Venkat, Guitars, Siri Sri Vocals and Bass, and you in the Voice and Guitar. How was the idea of forming a Heavy Metal band and why the name? SC: It all started in 2010 when I, Shasank and Siri were part of a classic rock cover band along with two others members. We’ve played on every stage in the city and were commercially successful. Then the three of us wanted a different outfit for the band, an outfit where we have our own compositions and in 2014 we‘ve met Noble John at a gig. It clicked; we all have similar taste in heavy metal. Artists like Accept, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Iron maiden were our prime influences. The name Against evil has no big story behind it, it was just catchy of and we all went with it hahaha and on a serious note it goes well with our lyrics and compositions… CR: How is the current situation in India regarding the rock or metal scene? We know that there are a lot of bands that play different genres. Has it been easy or difficult for Against Evil to excel in a movement with many bands?
SC: The quality of Indian rock or metal has been top notch but there are inadequate platforms to showcase it. There is limited following to these genres as Bollywood, Hip Hop, Pop and Regional music taps most of the following. Choosing Rock or metal in India as a career is solely out of passion and not out of commercial interest. On an average a metal band from India plays 2 to 3 gigs a month where as a Dj gets an average minimum of 15 to 20 gigs. Hailing from Vizag , there was very less competition for us and India has a very good extreme metal scene, The fact that we play Old School heavy metal got us our own unique following. CR: Currently the band has the support of Doc Gator Records, likewise with Tales from the Pit Records for the distribution of their material to other continents. How do you feel with the support these labels give you to expand the sound of the band? SC: Massive, Our reach to the international scene has amplified with both these distribution deals. Fans from Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil and Argentina were so amazed with the album that we have got a flurry of messages to our Facebook page asking us to visit Europe and South America. With the help of Doc Gator Records and a Facebook group called Heavy Metal fans (est. 2017) the dream of a Euro Tour will soon be a reality. CR: In relation to metal in a country like India have had problems to express their musical proposal openly? Censures? Or do you fight in an extremely conservative society? SC: Like in other countries even India has these misconceptions that Metal is Loud, Metal is devils music, it opens gates to drugs and having long hair is stared upon etc. The onus is on us to prove them wrong. Like any other genres certain attributes get stuck to certain people and only if you expose people to this genre they will understand whether they like it or not. Hence we feel our country should be exposed to more rock and metal to make that decision. CR: The band during these years has had the opportunity to be an opening act?
SC: We opened for Jeff Loomis at Delhi, that is by far the monumental achievement for us and we played at Bangalore Open Air Pre Party. Bands like Overkill, Immolation Alcest performed on the main stage of Bangalore open air. CR: What is your point of view about digital platforms? We know that the recording industry has changed in recent years, and physical formats have adapted to new trends. Do you consider the digital age for Against Evil to be harmful or beneficial? SC: To be honest, with the digital era it is easier to be noticed. Imagine if it was like in the olden days, People might have not known Metal exists in India. Bandcamp is one such revolution for bands like us to upload our music and cater to the international markets as there was no record label aiding us. Promotion is easy on social platforms like facebook and youtube. The only downside of it is the music is freely available and you just have to take a call between fame and revenue generation. The more that people download your albums for free the more miles you get for your songs but of course at the cost of your revenue. CR: Are you currently planning tours to other neighboring countries? Is there an opportunity proposal for the band to be presented in European countries? SC: The band is going to Europe from 30 July to 27 Sept 2019 with 16 confirmed gigs across Germany and Switzerland. The credit goes to Doc Gator Records of Switzerland for kick starting this dream of ours and massively supported by the Facebook page Heavy Metal Fans with a membership of 3500 fans. CR: What is the vision that you and your bandmates have for a future that for many it is worthwhile for you to continue writing? SC: Well we will pursue our passion for heavy metal for as long as we breathe and we also started writing new material for the next album. We would want to perform on big stages along with some big bands. This European trip is a start for us to play in many more countries in the future. CR: What message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and I thank you for the time you have taken in answering them for our readers in Conexion Rock Radio?
SC: It is a great pleasure to see how good music is appreciated throughout the world irrespective of the country of origin or language. I Thank Conexion Rock Radio for this opportunity and Stay Metal Always \,,/. Special thanks to M Sravan Chakravarthi for the time granted in this interview for Conexion Rock Radio.
