CYNIC A Perfect Humanoid Mutation Made Music
Conexion Rock Radio continues to provide interesting interviews with characters from the rock and metal scene all over the planet, and our next guest in this episode is not the exception.
New Jersey is our new stop, and there we talked with SEAN MALONE, well-known multi instrumentalist and current bass player of the Progressive Death Metal band CYNIC, who updates us about the next news the band has for their fans this year, and especially when they have started to give signals with the release of a single called Humanoid, and everything is indicative that a new album is coming, and that for its fans is a perfect Humanoid Mutation made music
Cynic currently consists of Sean Malone on bass and Chapman Stick, Paul Masvidal on Voice and Guitar, and Matt Lynch on Drums.
Conexion Rock Radio: Sean, it's an honor to have you here for our audience in Latin America and other continents who want to know the upcoming news that Cynic will have for their fans in 2019, welcome! Sean Malone: Thanks to you for your interest in knowing and sharing news from the band for your readers around the world Johonny, an honor.
CR: We know that the band is starting the process of production and recording for an album that will possibly come to light in the final months of this year or the beginning of 2020. What expectations have the band writing a new page in their history? SM: I don’t want to speak for anyone else, but I think it’s safe to say that the only expectation we’ve ever had was to continue challenging ourselves, as well as each other.
CR: If Kindly Bent to Free Us was a very acclaimed album by critics and fans, with this upcoming one you seek to excel yourself musically speaking. Will it be heavier and more melodic than the previous ones? SM: It’s difficult to gauge what “heavier” and “more melodic” might mean to everyone, but the single we released called Humanoid is a good indication of the direction we’ve been exploring.
CR: In the same way we know that this will be the first album with Matt Lynch in the Drums, how do you feel in working with him now as Power Trio? SM: Matt brings with him a large range of styles and influences. For me, as a bassist, playing with such a musical drummer is always a privilege.
CR: Your incursion in Cynic was for the recording of The Breed Beyond, and then in Focus, which for many is a classic in the history of the band and the beginning of an interesting era. How do you feel about traveling this road with your bandmates? SM: I feel very fortunate being associated with Cynic. I don’t think anyone would have guessed that, 25 years later, we would still be making records, so each new project is always something special to me. We’re grateful for Season Of Mist’s continued support, and we’re looking forward to working with them on future projects.
CR: What is your point of view about the musical evolution of the band and the important contribution that you have in Cynic? SM: The style and content of Cynic has evolved over the years, but this is a natural consequence of composing; the nature of music, and I think of art in general, is not to remain fixed and rigid—as much as some fans might have preferred Cynic to do so. The composer and the listener both evolve, and rarely is it ever along a parallel path. Whether my contribution is important isn’t for me to say, but there has always been a sense of musical and artistic freedom working with Cynic, and it has always been challenging, too. Put another way: at the beginning of each new project, I know I’ll need to become a better bassist in order to finish it.
CR: Is there any formula in the band to make high quality albums? Everyone thinks that there is no underrated in his discography! Comments? SM: There’s no formula that I know of. But similar to what I said before, I’d rather continue to explore new ideas on each recording rather than orbit around the old ones.
CR: The band has thought in the future to record a disc or DVD in direct? Would it be perfect for your discography. What do you think about this? SM: A live CD or DVD would be great—perhaps in the future.
CR: Once the new album is released, are there tour plans for Europe and Central or Latin America? SM: There are no plans yet, but we hope to do some touring for the new release.
CR: What message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview, and I want to thank you for the time you have taken in answering each of our questions on Conexion Rock Radio. SM: Thank you for the interview, and thanks to everyone for their support!
