CR: Gracias a ti Peter.
Canciones como End of Illusions, Under a Black Crown, Mortal, Shadow World, Life Among the Ruins, Cold Desire, Curse the Night, One World, It's All Too Much, aquí tenemos una balada como Dying to Live, Lifelines, and In the End.

Humanity Rises From the Ruins Conexión Rock Radio once again offers you a band that is a pioneer in the genre of Heavy / Speed and Power Metal, and in 2024 they come with an interesting work that without a doubt is already one of the favorites this year. Peavy comments on the composition process and concept of this new work, which for many consider to be the closing of an interesting trilogy that they began in 2020 when they released Winds Of Rage, and that currently the band returns to the three-member configuration that is They are complemented by Vassilios "Lucky" Maniatopoulos on drums and vocals, and Jean Bormann on guitars. Come forward, read and enjoy this enjoyable interview with this iconic band that celebrates with all its fans around the world 4 decades of history and great albums that are classics, and that with this new page in its history Rage leaves us an invitation to humanity can rise from the ruins to build a new future. Conexión Rock Radio: Good morning from Honduras Peter, a pleasure to talk with you again for our radio and website, time has passed quickly since the promotion of Resurrection Day, and thank you for accepting our invitation to share with Rage fans on everyone about the new album you have in your hands, welcome my dear friend! Peter Wagner: Thanks Johonny, that's how time flies, 3 years since Resurrection Day, but very happy to talk to you again and by the way, good afternoon here from Germany. CR: Thanks to you Peter. We start the interview with good news, Rage presents Afterlifelines, and it will be released to the world on March 29 through Steamhammer, by the way, congratulations, what a tremendous album Rage made and as always the band does not disappoint, I think this one It is job number 25 or 26, correct me if I´m wrong in the information. What are your expectations with this album that is definitely a candidate for the best of 2024?
PW: Without fear of being wrong, this would be the 26th album in our history. We are very motivated to make a great album like this, so I really have no expectations, you don't know what will happen with people's reactions, you know, but I am very sure that many will like what we have done. A good album like this has definitely been recorded. We have already had the first reactions and they have been favorable, and we were able to present some songs previously in Canada and it is a good sign that people approved these songs. Everything indicates that things will work out very well, and I can tell you with confidence and with the good humor that characterizes without exaggeration that we are preparing important events and this will be a great year for the band, since we are preparing an anniversary party with many shows, and we hope to be able to play everywhere and be able to celebrate this with people. CR: For the first time in the history of the band you present us with a double album, what motivated you to do an interesting project like this, here there is a lot of material in your hands, a total of 21 songs, many would think that the band had many ideas and you didn't want to leave anything out, what details can you share with us?
PW: The truth is we looked at this as a very well-intentioned album, there are songs that have different variations between the two albums, and we wanted the listener to enjoy it as a kind of climax between the songs that are captured in Afterlifelines. The central point here is that you have a pleasant experience in all aspects, and my advice to people is that when they listen to the album they try to take the time necessary to understand what we have composed and what we are talking about in our lyrics. Regarding the reason for a double album, this whole idea started in 2021 when we released Resurrection Day, here in Europe there were still restrictions due to the pandemic, and the blockades were constant. With all that against us, we couldn't go on tours and consequently we decided to cancel the concerts. So the best thing was to focus on making new ideas while taking advantage of our free time. We realized we had enough material for two albums, and I intended to make a double album at least once in the band's career. I remember that in 2006 during the recording sessions for Speak of the Dead it was intended to be two albums, but unfortunately for the people at Nuclear Blast, which was our label in those days, they didn't like the idea. So we couldn't do it. Now that we are working with SPV we have asked them if they were interested in doing such an experiment and they told us that it is a good reason to celebrate the band's 40th anniversary, so it made sense and they supported us. Then they gave us the green light to work on the project, and we were thinking how could we organize a double album and make the spirit of the band stable on two albums? We decided that one album would have classic power metal songs, and the other would have a more epic, orchestral and progressive tone. At that point the intention was to make a homogeneous album and make people see the interesting connections that were offered through the songs so that they could be enjoyed from start to finish without having to skip tracks. In the end the idea turned out very well and that idea that we sought to realize years ago is now a reality. CR: Thanks for the response Peter, the background of doing an ambitious project in the history of Rage is very interesting. Now that we talk about this, many people wonder if this double album that you recorded represented a risk. As you know, the recording industry rejected the idea of making double albums, except with the exception of compilations or live albums, there are some examples such as what happened for Helloween with the Keepers, Judas Priest with Twin Turbo, the Illusions of Guns N' Roses, and even Metallica's Double Load project. Now we have double and even triple albums like Beloved Antichrist by Therion.
Now in the case of Rage, from the beginning of recording the new album, you thought about whether it was necessary to put together the best of those songs on one album or you were already thinking about making two for this occasion, because as I mentioned a few minutes ago, a project like this implies a risk, but fortunately the double album will work very well for the fans. PW: All of those are mere business decisions, before you couldn't do that, but now you have the creative freedom to be able to expand all of that. The best thing at that time was to make two albums and for them both to have a unity and to be able to complement each other musically, and that was my wish when launching Afterlifelines. As an extra point in the special edition of the album in vinyl format, a concert we performed at the Summer Breeze festival comes as an extra. CR: For this album the band is once again a three-piece piece, although on Resurrection Day they had four members. ¿Do you think a power trio mode configuration is the best option for Rage?
PW: Actually, Stefan Weber who was our second guitarist was not fired, nor was he fired from the band. Last year, very serious problems arose that prevented him from continuing with us, and by mutual agreement it was best for him to take a break. For the band the doors are open and Stefan can return at any time, as long as he feels well and able to work again. Then it could happen that he returns mid-year or perhaps next year. We really don't know and all that depends on him alone. In the meantime we will work as a trio. We used to maintain that configuration for many years, and for now we will continue to be three people in the band. CR: I understand that point Peter, in the case of Jean he has done an excellent job on the guitars, and has effectively played the rhythmic and leading parts of the album PW: I had that feeling that Jean was cloning himself in the guitars (laughs) and I wanted an album with a lot of guitar attack, for that reason there is a lot of variety in the sound of the new album and for Jean it was a challenge already overcome. CR: The sound of the album and the instruments are in perfect balance Peter, we know that Manuel Cohnen has been in charge of the production and mixing process, by the way, this was his first recording with Rage.
What impressions do you have of the work that Manuel did for Afterlifelines? PW: Manuel has been support for the band, I know that he has had experience producing and mixing albums in addition to having his own studio not far from my house. I was able to hear about the work he has done years ago, and something that has caught my attention is the way he produces and mixes. So, when we started preparing the project for the new album, I had planned that Daniel González, who produced Resurrection Day, would be in charge of the process. Unfortunately he had a busy schedule and was working with someone else in the studio, which became complicated at that point. Then Manuel came along and he was a faster and more viable option, so he stayed on board and I think he did a wonderful job with us. CR: Let me tell you that the production gives a perfect balance to all the instruments on the album, they sound perfect. But the main reason behind this is the songs, and people assume that they want to have this double album in their collections whether it is CD, vinyl or special editions. Songs like End of Illusions, Under a Black Crown, Mortal, Shadow World, Life Among the Ruins, Cold Desire, Curse the Night, One World, It's All Too Much, here we have a ballad like Dying to Live, Lifelines, and In the End.
Peter, many people see this album as the closing of a kind of trilogy that they started years ago when they released Winds Of Rage and Resurrection Day, but what does the band offer us conceptually with this tremendous album? PW: I must tell you that you are right on that point about a continuity in the story in those three albums. There is a narrative in the songs, and people have thought this is an adventure that seeks to have continuity, and they see this new album as the conclusion of that story. Many have also noticed that the covers are related to each other, the truth is I have a less optical criterion when it comes to illustrations. Although I must admit that it was my idea to have those elemental colors on these albums, for example, on Winds Of Rage the cover is green and dark, on Resurrection it has reddish and fiery tones, and on the new album it is a yellowish background. So there is an open interpretation that they are albums with different stories or that the three have a single narrative, but now that you say it Johonny about the trilogy I see this as an interesting aspect that is added to Afterlifelines. CR: It´s a delight to see the Soundchaser (the band's mascot) looking imposing over a desolate wasteland.
But there are also interesting topics such as ecology and the extinction of species. That example is reflected in Toxic Waves, and in Dead Man's Eyes. What motivated you to make these two songs in particular? PW: I am a person concerned about the environment in which we live, humans are above a line that possibly marks a point of no return due to the fact that we are destroying our own environment, we are the ones who in the end will pay the consequences of those actions. We are wasting a lot of resources and also causing several species to disappear from the face of the earth, in Dead Man's Eyes, for example, it is about the reduction of biodiversity with the aim of killing all orangutans, while Toxic Waves talks about the gigantic plastic pollution in the Pacific Sea. And there are many examples like this, you know, if we do not change our behavior a little, we are not worthy of being called inhabitants of this planet. That's my point of view on that. CR: Regarding the name of the album, many would think of it as a reference on the one hand to the 40 years of the band, but on the other hand it would be a message that the band fights against time, keeping its history alive beyond the limits. Is there any special meaning with the name of the new album Peter? PW: I think there are a lot of people who see it that way. Although I define it in two sentences: words and life lines that intertwine. For many the title might even be new and unknown, but once they listen to and appreciate the content of the two albums they will have a more open perception about the name and what the band intends to do in the coming years. CR: If we define all this for the listener it would be a fascinating experience Peter. Currently the band has presented their first two videos: Under a Black Crown and Cold Desire. If asked you what could be the candidate for an upcoming video, what song would it be?
PW: I tell you that to promote the album we are looking to release five videos, the next one will be for Dying to Live, then we are planning to prepare ideas for Toxic Waves, and we will see what happens later for the fans. We will be revealing surprises so you can enjoy what we have with this double album. CR: Thank you very much for the information Peter. Many people see in Rage as a veteran band, for others you are a classic band, especially by those who have enjoyed your history and who have known how to value you over the years.
What is your feeling about this journey that you have made over four decades, many albums, tours and a history that is currently being written with your band and other projects? PW: Basically it is like the story of my life, since I am the composer of all those songs, and I am planning to release a biography in October of this year about my years in music, called “From The Cradle to the Grave and from The Cradle to the Stage” CR: Well, with that extra section it will be more special to be able to appreciate all the work you have done not only in Rage, but in other projects that are part of your journey through music. One question, does the 40th anniversary celebration start this year or in 2025? PW: Currently we will hold the celebration this year. We will review from the days of Avenger, a band I formed in 1984, so personally that will be my starting point. We are in negotiation plans to hold shows in the United States and if possible to reach Latin America by 2025, so we will let time decide how things will go. CR: There are three albums that are celebrating their anniversary, in this case The Missing Link which recently turned 30 in 2023, 10 Years in Rage: The Anniversary Album which also turns 30 in 2024, and Soundchaser recently turned 20.
Taking advantage of Peter's celebration, many are waiting to know if you plan to include songs from these albums in a setlist of classics along with the new material PW: Well, we have already played that material precisely last year, so it will be difficult for us to repeat this again, we will make changes to the setlist for the celebrations, in the same way special editions of several albums with extra material are being managed, some They are already in circulation, so we have a lot of things to get out of the trunk taking advantage of the anniversary. There are many ideas in mind to propose, record the celebration for a live album or video, documentaries or release a commemorative box. We will see what we can do later and offer some pleasant surprises to the people who have followed us all their lives and to the new fans who are looking to learn more about our history. CR: In advance I wish you and the rest of the band a well-deserved 40th anniversary celebration. My dear Peter, what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this interview, and thank you again for receiving me at your home for this pleasant conversation, and as always the doors of Conexión Rock Radio are open for you.
