ARMORED SAINT
Agradecimientos especiales a Kathleen Roe, Sarah Lutz.

ARMORED SAINT
The Saints That Punching Above The Sky 2020 is considered throughout the world as a year to be forgotten due to the cancellations of festivals, trips and a deep economic crisis that the music industry has had to face at all costs, but within the bad we highlight the good, and here you are we present to you this iconic band that has released what for many is another great album in their history. We spoke on this occasion with Joey Vera, Bassist of the band Armored Saint, and that in this special report we share with all of you details and general reception towards his most recent work called Punching the Sky, which was released at the end of October 2020 via Metal Blade Records, this being his eighth album in discography. Currently the band is conformed by Joey Vera- Bass, Gonzo Sandoval- Drums, Phil Sandoval and Jeff Duncan- Guitars, and John Bush- Vocals. Joey tells us about the creative process of this album, the special guests, the concept that the band presents to us on this occasion as well as the point of view about the current situation and how they decided to launch Punching in these troubled times, and the plans the future that these saints have when they strike higher than the sky. Conexión Rock Radio: Joey, greetings from Honduras, Central America! I hope everyone at home is safe and well with this emergency, and it is an honor to speak with you and make this special report about the next news that Armored Saint has for their fans this year, welcome! Joey Vera: Hi Johonny, thank you for your interest in the band, anyway, it is an honor to echo what we do for our fans in Latin America. CR: We know that the band had several plans for this 2020 and everything was suddenly canceled.
How are things there in Los Angeles with the Coronavirus issue? JV: Well, to be honest with you, I consider myself pretty lucky, I'm fine, my friends are fine, you know everyone around me is getting over this. The rest of the band is locked up and safe, I know the rest of the world and many other people are having a hard time. There are many who have taken strict care and so far everything is fine, we have been affected both emotionally and psychologically, but we only try to stay healthy and positive in the face of this difficult situation but we have known how to adapt to it and we are all fine, and we thank you all for worrying and keeping an eye on us in our networks. CR: Let's put the bad things aside, let's talk about the good news and Armored Saint releases his new album called Punching the Sky that was released on October 23 through Metal Blade Records, by the way, number 8 of his discography , and for many one of the works that worthily closes this convulsed 2020.
Punching The Sky is considered by many to show that it will take more than a global pandemic to stop these saints from moving forward. Joey, what are your expectations as a band with this new work? JV: That's very good of you, thank you! Well, you know we'd love to start touring, that's for sure and it's a little early to start making those plans, but hopefully you know that the procedures with the medical community will come out quickly, and everyone will have more confidence to be able to go out. to the public again and we can use open spaces and have the clubs restart operations again so that we can organize some tours, because we know that there are many people who are waiting to see us at a concert and enjoy what we have done. But we must stay in this confinement for a while and that the music stays alive and strong in their homes. Although the only thing we can really do is stay connected with fans through social media and try to provide some videos on Facebook, interaction with fans on YouTube or Instagram, so we are trying to stay involved with that more than what normal because it is a good way for us to stay connected with everyone and that is the only thing we can do for now so that the world returns to normal and that the doors to the entertainment industry open again. CR: For this occasion, you have special guests, in this case Patrick D'Arcy, Jacob Ayala and Dizzy Reed from Guns N 'Roses.
What experiences did the band have from working with these musicians in the recording studio? JV: There are several reasons why I enjoy having real musicians on the album, including Patrick D'Arcy who plays the Bagpipes very well, he also lives in Los Angeles, but you know we had to hire people who are good at what they do. they do with their instrument. With technology we could use tracks to make those instruments appear, but that would be pretending, you know a bagpipe with my keyboard would not sound the same as an original bagpipe. The same happened with the keyboards and the Piano, you know I could play a part that corresponds to the Piano, but I am a Bassist and not a pianist (laughs), Dizzy Reed is a personal friend of Jeff Duncan our guitarist and Dizzy called Jeff, And he told him that when he heard we were entering the studio, he told him that he needed it for the next Armored album, you have to find me some song to play, and so when Jeff called me, and I told the one who had two songs ready that They have piano and keyboards so I said perfect so I called Dizzy and he was excited, he came into the studio and he did great things. Then Jacob Ayala came along, and we had that idea for the album intro with a drum, and we thought what would happen if we started with a marching drum instead of a normal drum and so it immediately came to mind that Jacob was a very good friend. ours we grew up with.
His son was graduating from high school at the time, and he was in the marching band and I said it would be perfect for him to play, you know he's a drummer at school, so Jacob came into the studio along with his son, you know , when he entered the studio he was 18 years old and he had never experienced the atmosphere of a recording studio or anything like that, so he did a great job and everything turned out professionally so he and his father along with Gonzo played drums together , and it was kind of fun and I like having other people involved. On this new record we added a completely different flavor sonically speaking, and that I think gave the record more depth. CR: This new album is considered by many to be an instant classic for fans in this quarantine lockdown: Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants, End Of The Attention Span, My Jurisdiction, Missile to Gun, Bark, No Bite, Unfair, in a few words Punching can stand toe to toe with another great work such as Symbol Of Salvation.
Can you tell us what is the concept behind Punching? JV: Thanks again for the compliment, and we are very happy with the album, we are proud of it, the response has been incredible, it really is not a concept work, we don't like to do things that way, but lyrically John was very inspired in what was happening in the world and in the last four years, notice that this album was finished before the arrival of the Covid. So we had already written the songs before even before the world went into lockdown, but it's interesting because a lot of the lyrics relate to what we're still living through today. Some of that was also part of what the United States was going through during the last four years with this Administration but I would say in general terms that Punching has a special meaning, starting with the cover that represents the band from the beginning, that from the first Today we have had the commitment to grow and evolve, to be better people and composers, we have always wanted to evolve in something and we never wanted to be the same people who make records and that they all sound the same. We always wanted to go further and then hitting the sky for me represents going beyond the sky piercing the sky, you know they say that the sky is the limit, but we say that the sky is not the limit that we want to reach beyond the sky . On the cover it's basically in the Labyrinth and it represents an amazing journey, and I see that representation of what we have done for 40 years and that we have been together, we have forged and worked our way through this maze of learning, life, experiences, failures and successes. And all those things that we live were the size of a mountain and that is indicative of why we are old. CR: What will attract attention is the cover, as you mentioned it is a labyrinth in the shape of the traditional helmet. At first glance, anyone would think: what kind of Mayan illustration is this? When you look carefully at the details you exclaim: What a tremendous job they did with the illustration!
JV: That's a quick story. We were looking for ideas for the cover and I knew I wanted to call it Punching In The Sky, and I had the idea to put the helmet on it with various details, different from what we know now, our drummer Gonzo originally said: let's put the logo on the cover and call it de somehow and that will be, you know, but I wanted to do something a bit more creative so originally I had the whole logo as a big pillar but actually I wasn't that happy with it and if that made the logo a unit really small because you have this big rudder and that logo was hard to read because it was small. I was hiking with my wife and her friend, and we are walking through these beautiful mountains and then there was a scene on the hike we were right in front of the mountain. They were majestic, they were huge and I, and then I realized that I am like I have to put the logo in nature like on the side of a mountain that has to be big like a mountain, and then I put the logo on the mountain and I drew a sketch, and I said it's still too small, so my wife said remove the logo, remove the band name and just wear the helmet, so I made another sketch and made the helmet and then turned it into a maze and I put it on the side of a mountain and I said that's what looks great, so then we went to find an amazing artist his name is Steve Stone, he works from the UK and I found him on Instagram (laughs), Believe it or not, he was totally into it, and he knew everything about the band, he was a metalhead, he had never met him before and we gave him the sketches. He just followed it and made it even more majestic and more beautiful and more interesting. All the details at the end were very cool. We really loved his work. CR: It should be mentioned that during the time that we have been locked up many bands have released very interesting works for their fans even though there are no concerts, these albums clearly fill an empty space and a need for fresh air in these hard times, and Punching In The Sky has been the answer to all this, have you had any comments from the fans on the networks that have thanked them for it?
JV: I want to say that it feels very good to have done that, and I think a lot of people are thanking us, and you know they ask me a lot if we think about keeping the album as if we weren't releasing it due to the pandemic, you know and we in We actually thought about it for about 5 minutes, we had a conversation, but it was a very short conversation, because we figured out why to hold the pitch when everyone is locked up at home, and no one could go to work. And that is where people listen to more music than ever because they are at home and people want new music, so what are we going to deny our fans? It's a new album, we have to get it as soon as possible, so we decided to release the album as soon as possible, and October 23 was just right, and once it came out physically and digitally, people sent us messages from all over the world saying: Thank you, thank you, thank you for releasing the album now, and this is helping to make 2020 a better year and for that reason people are very grateful to us and to other great releases that came out that year, so I think it's good let new music come out during this time. CR: In recent years, many bands hold special celebrations to revisit classic albums live.
In this case, Symbol of Salvation turns 30 in 2021, and La Raza its first 10 in 2020. Are you for or against these kinds of celebrations, or do you have plans to launch a special anniversary edition? JV: Very interesting point. Regarding Symbol Of Salvation, next year it turns 30, we did a special tour in the United States about two years ago, presenting the album in its entirety, as well as in Europe and we recorded some of those shows and also in the city. from New York, in fact, before I started working at Punching, I was working on editing the audio for those concerts, so our plan is to release a DVD or Blu-ray section next year exclusively dedicated to Symbol Of Salvation entirely. live, we are contemplating releasing it on a double CD with some bonus content. Although for now we are focusing on the promotion of the new album, and once it is finished we will do projects for Symbols, so hopefully something will come out for next fall. And in relation to La Raza good point the one you mention (laughs) is the 10 years of the album and I haven't thought about that yet, so we can possibly do something about it possibly in 2021.
CR: If the situation continues with this pandemic, what do you think about the future of the scene around the world? Reinvent yourself or hope what happens after the emergency
JV: Well, I'm not an expert by any means, but I think we finally have at least some hope with the news that some vaccine could be ready by the end of the year or early next year. We are with that expectation of resuming everything as it was before, and with a change in the panorama, a very gradual return to what we call life can be given. It is normal in terms of the music business and the entertainment industry returning to normal with tours and venues that can open again, and that people who go to concerts feel confident of enjoying something of quality and with guarantees. I think it will take a while before we can get to know 100% of the capacity of a venue again and it is not known how long it will take, it could be next summer, but it is not at all certain yet. Although the outlook could be later than early in this regard, it will be time to wait as things develop around the world. Realistically, I don't see that this can happen anytime soon. Like I said it could be summer or maybe fall, but what do I know? I'm a Bassist, not a Doctor (laughs) CR: Joey, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for the time you have given us to make this conversation very interesting for Armored fans in Latin America and the rest of the world. JV: Thanks to you Johonny, it was a great conversation for a Latin American medium like yours, and we thank the fans for the great response they have given to the album, not only to this one, but to the others who have come out throughout this eventful year (special mention for the new Fates Warning Long Day Good Night album in which Vera is also a Bassist), it's amazing, and I'm honored that fans are welcoming this Punching In The Sky with open arms. It's pretty, it's quite unheard of and I'm honored by that as we can't do any of these things without the constant support of fans all these years and we hope to deliver better surprises in the future. It only remains to wish you a happy 2021, take care of the Coronavirus, and once this is over, you can see everyone again at a local or at a festival. Those are my best wishes to all of you from Armored Saint. CR: Joey, thank you very much for your time. Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! Likewise to our Friends of Metal Blade for the opportunity to speak with you, and we hope to speak again in the future. Have a perfect day there in home! JV: Thank you very much! The same for your readers and listeners there in Honduras and stay safe! Special thanks to Kathleen Roe, Sarah Lutz. Natasha Gorey and the entire press and promotion team at Metal Blade Records and Looters for their help in making this report possible, and to Joey Vera for the time allotted in this pleasant conversation.
