SODOM
SODOM
The Biblical Euthanasia of Sodom and Gomorrah Conexion Rock Radio brings all of you to one of the most important Thrash Metal bands born in Germany for the whole world, and that in this 2020 they return to action with another great work under their arms. On this occasion, our guest is Frank Blackfire (original name Frank Gosdzik) Guitarist of the band SODOM, and in this special report we will share with all of you everything related to the release of his album number 16 called GENESIX XIX, released last 27 November via Steamhammer, at the same time represents Tony Merkel's debut as Drummer who is complemented in this line-up by Tom Angelripper- Bass and Voice, and Yorck Segatz- Guitars. Frank tells us about how the band has faced the confinement caused by the Covid 19 pandemic, the concept that the band offers with this new work, the reasons why Sodom is now a four-member piece, various curiosities, and the plans The future that these pioneers of German metal have for all of you once the pandemic ends, of one thing is certain ... Sodom returns stronger and with a legion that from hell itself will come to impose a euthanasia of biblical proportions in Sodom and Gomorrah. Conexion Rock Radio: Frank, good morning from Honduras, nice to talk to you again in this new report for our readers at Conexion Rock Radio. From here I send my best to you, your family and your bandmates to be safe and well with this emergency, and it is an honor to echo the upcoming news that a great band like Sodom has for their fans this year. Welcome! Frank Blackfire: Hello Johonny, nice to talk again on your radio, because here, locked at home with this pandemic, we are all well and hoping to return to a tour soon. For now we come with a new album, and we hope it will be to everyone's liking. CR: We started this day's interview to find out how it has been for the band to face this situation that affected them as artists.
FB: This problem sucks, I mean, it is fucking bad, but there are countries that have been more affected and it is very difficult for them, even though we are fine in our, everyone is getting a bit boring and totally fucking all that is happening, but hopefully all of that will get better soon. We started rehearsing with Tony at the beginning of this year, at the end of April we had a set of songs ready for two shows in Greece, we had everything ready after several days of rehearsals, but the pandemic arrived and all activity was canceled. So, all of our concert and tour plans died there. CR: Let's put the bad things aside and talk about the good ones.
Sodom releases a new album called Genesis XIX via Steamhammer, and it was released on November 27. By the way, album number sixteen in its history. How does the band feel about releasing an album in these rare circumstances? FB: We had to release the album already. We had new ideas that were saved since 2018, with the new lineup and with the arrival of the EP Partisan it was our starting point. We knew that sooner or later we had to release a new album, and what we felt from the moment that everything was ready and that people would like it because of the direction we have taken, for that reason we decided to try releasing the EP Out of the Frontline Trench Now with Genesis XIX we are eager to share with the fans of these new songs. It was a process that we did not take very lightly since everyone in the band contributed ideas, and when the pandemic hit we thought this could involve a risk, but we went ahead and were able to complete everything. CR: Genesis XIX makes a clear reference in the Bible to the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. With everything lived in this catastrophic year, this new album lends itself to a soundtrack, in the same way that the main theme of the EP Out of the Frontline Trench appeared. What is the concept behind this incredible work? FB: Tom came up with the idea to make an album that would talk about the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. And once the concept and cover were done, we were so shocked and said: this is a work of art! And everything that we were reflecting in the songs was very attached to the cover. We literally talk about the end of the world, the current situation we live in, one of the songs that fits perfectly in everything is Indoctrination, and as a band we are taking an interesting step in making a concept around this new album. CR: What impressions do you have of Joe Petagno's work on the cover, and we want to know if Klaus Spangenberg recorded with you for this new album or did you have a new producer?
FB: In fact, the previous material was recorded by Klaus, and he is a person who has the knowledge to do interesting things in a recording studio, so when it was time to go into recording, we all thought of Klaus, and it was a decision in collective. This time we decided to work with Patrick W. Engel who has done several jobs with the band before, and with Siggi Bemm. Both have been in charge of the whole process.
When it came time to put the album together in the studio, we felt like being back in the 80's in the middle of a fucking sound check, and the process that the four members brought to shape this new work was very satisfying. On the cover, what can I tell you, the piece is great about representing the end of Sodom and Gomorrah, and Joe has done a great job. CR: Once the album was finished, did you think if it was a good or bad idea to release it in the middle of a global pandemic? Many would say they could have postponed the launch until 2021
In this case, was it the band or the label that made the decision to make this move? FB: In these cases, it has always been so that they propose options to launch it later, for us the project had a deadline, everything was delivered between July and August to launch it in November. We took advantage of the time we had in that space to do the promotion. Seeing that the shows in Greece were canceled, we said that this was the ideal time to record it, with that movement we closed the plans we had two years ago, so we did everything, we delivered the material to the label, and they finally released it at the end of November. CR: This album from the band's perspective seems like it was made for different audiences, those who love Sodom since its inception playing Black and Thrash Metal, on the other hand, those who like modern Sodom that injects fresh air, and there are even songs with a punk air.
Tracks like Sodom & Gomorrah, Euthanasia, Glock 'n' Roll, Indoctrination and Nicht mehr mein Land are examples that the band with almost 40 years of history has managed to keep up to date by uniting several generations with their music, to the point of saying: that with this current lineup the band is reborn! What do you think about it? FB: Yes, I think the new lineup is quite powerful with two guitarists, and it sounds more direct to your face, especially when it is a concert. Throughout the years the band has had many people in their past lineups, and that is appreciated that they have contributed everything during all that time, in my case returning to the band is a lot of joy, especially with Tom who did not feel satisfied with everything that happened in 2017 (Sodom being a 3 piece with Tom, Bernemann and Makka) and it was proposed that one more guitarist be added. The idea was not well received, so Tom decided to change the whole line-up and stay as a quartet and go back to the basic sound of the 80's. Perhaps many have gotten used to the band being always a trio, and I don't blame them, but one thing is for sure, we have grown as musicians, and once we play a concert again it will be a fucking experience for everyone. CR: Genesis XIX represents Toni Merkel's debut as a drummer, curiously I work with you on your solo project. How does the rest of the band feel to have Toni playing with you now?
FB: Tony is a great musician; he has fit perfectly in the band and Tom has been very happy that he is playing with us now. He has come to fill the position that Husky left earlier in the year, and when I asked Tom to audition for him and he agreed to listen. Technically he has known how to contribute new things in blast beat and fast things, in addition he has had a lot of experience playing with many bands, especially with Sabiendas. I remember when Tom told me: I need a very badass drummer right now, and when he listened to him, he just said: stay in the band. Also, I have known him many years ago when he played drums in my personal project (for the Back on Fire album), and he will put a strong projection on his instrument. He is a good boy and a great person. He can accurately interpret the old songs just like I have that same feeling for it to sound exact, already with this new album and future plans it will be a lot of work for Tony, he is a drum teacher, and to have it now with us is very cool. CR: With this global emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as delays in releases.
Being a musician and part of the band, are you aware that this emergency could affect you financially due to a possible drop in sales? FB: Of course I'm pretty pissed off, I mean we can play live and the whole situation pissed off everyone, which I mean this has affected everyone on several continents almost simultaneously, which is quite Funny, it's kind of strange and you have that ugly feeling of not knowing exactly where to go or where we can play live shows, but with the current situation everything has been canceled and it is not known exactly when things will return to normal. People need to have fun, go to a bar for a drink, eat at a restaurant, but the truth is that many people think that living in this situation is a total situation to lock up and sit at home or go shopping with a mask, it sucks what It happens and you know that many of us do not like that. CR: Personal comment: Since this pandemic began at the beginning of the year, everyone has been locked in their homes in need of concerts, travel, tours and especially new releases, and that is where Sodom fills that space that many fans need, and Genesis XIX is the answer to that and much more. FB: Yes, we seek to try to reach as many people as possible to give something new, piece by piece, and offer the best with these new songs, and as you say the new album is the answer to this situation and everything is fucking perfect! And we want to know what they think of the album, what they like or what they love, many people will like several songs, one of them Indoctrination, and soon we will make more videos so that you can enjoy the album, because as a band we are satisfied with everything so far. CR: One of the important moments is represented by Waldo & Pigpen, what can you tell us about this curious song for the new album?
FB: That song was written by Tom, which I can tell you talks about two children who grew up being friends playing war with toys, and who, due to fate, enrolled and flew planes, bombed places, although some of the ideas of This song came out of Partisan and Out of the Frontline Trench, so there was a little bit of everything in the songwriting to help shape the Waldo & Pigpen story. CR: What is your opinion about this trend in which many bands do their virtual live shows, we know how to share with their audience a communion an exchange of energy to make this something special. Comments…
FB: Yeah, we don't really want to do anything like that, I mean, maybe we can do a live, real-time broadcast and show people how we're going to rehearse or play something live. But we don't really know how things are going to happen, several ideas have come up to do a project like playing outside a city or in a church, for other bands what remains is to sit down and wait and go out to do things with their masks on. It is very strange that you are in a concert with few people, some distanced from each other or at tables talking and that suddenly someone gets up to go to the bathroom, and that is where there is no feeling in relation to doing things well in a concert. It only remains for all this to normalize, and to try to schedule as many shows as possible, and we could play in small places, but due to the current conditions it is a bit sad and that nothing happens for artistic activities, we will have to wait for this situation to improve. CR: If the situation continues with this pandemic, what do you think about the future of the scene around the world, reinventing yourself or fighting to the end? FB: Yes, we already thought about it and we are going to write another album (laughs), the idea is to continue composing new songs, and hopefully and if we continue together with this line-up to record new things, although the work situation and getting money is done sometimes a priority and we are all inclined to look for a regular job, because the truth is there is no income, and all this affects from business closings to job cancellations, and as musicians we make a living from composing and making music, but the entertainment industry is going through a very sad time, and we must protest because if you stay at home you can die of hunger, and that causes you to go out into the street out of desperation to look for something, and this problem must have a quick and prompt solution. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans to tour Europe, the United States or Latin America in 2021, or are you waiting to reschedule pending dates? FB: Yes, we had many plans and tours for this year, but unfortunately all of that was canceled, one of those examples is a festival in Mexico (Mexico Metal Fest) where we would be playing together with Kreator, Destruction and Tankard (The German Big 4), so there are many people waiting for this situation to end, however, our commitment to Mexican fans and those from other countries continues. We are also rescheduling dates for other festivals such as the Sweden Rock Fest, in the same way with Japan, Russia, several cities in Germany and other countries that will be added to the agenda. It only remains to hope that next year we can travel and do these live performances. CR: Frank, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for your time in doing this special report on Conexion Rock Radio. FB: On behalf of me and the band I sent a greeting to all our fans both in Latin America and the rest of the world, who enjoy the new album. Do not be afraid of this crisis because we are united and have the power to change everything to stay healthy, and we hope to see you soon at a festival or on a tour. Don't give up, don't be afraid and fight! CR: Frank, thank you for your time! Best of luck to you and your bandmates with this new album! Likewise to our Friends of Steamhammer for putting an interesting band like Sodom back on our sonic radar, we look forward to talking to you again in the future! Have a perfect day back home!
