Conexion Rock Radio: Hello Michael, how are you, greetings from Honduras, I send you my good wishes that everyone is well at home with this emergency.
It´s an honor to make this report for our readers who want to know about the upcoming news that Artillery have in this 2021, welcome! Michael Stützer: Hello Johonny, a pleasure to be able to talk to you again and thanks for your interest in coming to talk about the new album CR: We want to know how has it been for the band to face this situation that affects you as artists there in Denmark? MS: I think the situation has been the same in Denmark as it has been in every other country in the world for artists. It has been very frustrating not being able to go out and play. But at the same time, you have to respect the situation we are in right now. We have been focusing on writing songs and getting inspired instead. CR: Let's talk about good news, Artillery released on May 7th via Metal Blade Records his new album called X, and which curiously from the Roman number is his tenth production in his discography.
What impressions have you had from fans and critics towards the new album? MS: The overall reception of the album has been very, very positive. We are quite relieved and happy about all that. So overall We couldn't be happier. CR: How did the band feel about releasing X in a strange situation where there are no tours or concerts? MS: We just felt we had to release the album. We are hopeful that touring will continue later this year. Life must go on and releasing new music is a very important part of that for us. CR: X marks an important point in the history of the band, we know the situation that you have gone through with the death of Morten in 2019, and we extend our condolences to you and your family from here.
Many of us thought what would happen with the band without one of its most charismatic members. Did you ever contemplate moving on or taking a forced stop with Artillery? MS: I think a lot of thoughts went through the minds of everybody in the band. Moving on after the passing of Morten was hard, but we also knew that that was a big wish of his. But I think everything went trough our minds. CR: For this new album you have Kræn Meier as Guitarist, how was his entry into the band, and how do you feel about the contribution that he has made in X?
MS: Kræn a tremendous job on the new album. He fits in with the band very well and he writes very fittingly as well. He got the right approach and personality for the band. CR: Many will define X as "X-ample of High Quality Thrash" tracks like Eternal Night, the bombastic In Thrash We Trust, Force of Indifference, Mors Ontologica or the quiet The Ghost of Me are a delight that the listener will enjoy from beginning to end. in their homes and especially when all this is normalized in a concert.
Is there something conceptual about X? What details can you share with us? MS: I don't know if there's anything specifically conceptual about X, But if you look into the lyrics you will find a lot of hints of the bands past, but also some of the most renown topics that is a part of Artillery. The album was in many ways also a process where we had to redefine ourselves, which was quite a relief given the circumstances under which we wrote the album. CR: In the digipack edition there are two bonus tracks, the first The Last Journey (between the lines is a tribute to Mortem) and a version of Metallica- Trapped Under Ice. The cover was Kræn's initiative because we know that he was part of Metallica Jam.
How did you get the idea to make this version? MS: Actually, it wasn't Kræn’s initiative. We included the cover version on the EP because it was a favourite of Morten. CR: With respect for the legacy of Mortem, many consider that Artillery has reinvented himself keeping his spirit alive to the point of saying that this new lineup will give a lot to talk about in the coming years, what do you think about it?
MS: As it is right now, and as we feel right now, there is no point in stopping. We feel very comfortable with ourselves as it is right now and I think that the future is open to us. We will definitely keep the spirit alive. Morten Will always be a big part of artillery no matter what and his spirit will live on. CR: Currently with the pandemic still lurking, there are currently no concerts or tours. As you know, many musicians have a job and that doesn´t affect them monetarily, but those who are 100% dedicated to having a band. Artillery has any strategy to stay afloat while all this happens?
MS: We all also have our day jobs, so we survive trough that, but of course we would rather go out and play! So our only strategy is to keep on going as long as this may take. CR: If Covid didn´t exist, the band would have celebrated 30 years of a tremendous classic like By Inheritance, which for many (I include myself there) represents the greatest pinnacle in its history. Do you have future plans to revisit this album once all B.A.C.K. to normal?
Or do you release an anniversary edition with bonus material? MS: We have thought about doing something. But as it is right now, we don't know what can be done. We have a lot of good ideas, I think. So we hope to surprise you guys sometime in the future. CR: What is your point of view about the streaming concerts that many bands have reinvented to stay alive on the map? Artillery is for or against this type of modality? MS: We have been playing streaming concerts as well. I think it is an alternative that you may look into if there is no other option. It is better than nothing. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans for tours in Europe, the US or Latin America, or the panorama is uncertain to make live shows?
MS: We are planning on doing touring in the future, hopefully in the near future. But we will see. We will tour everywhere where people want to see us. So, we are working on that no matter what. CR: Michael, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for the time in make this special report in Conexion Rock Radio MS: Thank you so much for staying with us. Thank you so much for staying true.
