RAVEN
RAVEN
A Journey From Metal City To The Top Of The Mountain Conexión Rock Radio in the month of its 11th Anniversary offers all of you an interesting interview with one of the pioneer bands of the NWOBHM, and who are back in action with a work that will be one of the most acclaimed releases in 2020. Our trip takes us this time to Newcastle, United Kingdom, and it is there where John Gallagher, Voice and Bass of the band RAVEN, receives us at his home for a pleasant conversation in which we will share with our readers the important news that the band brings this year with his new work called METAL CITY, and that will be released this September 18 via Steamhammer, and that the band sees in this release a challenge that is marked by the global pandemic by the Coronavirus, but that according to our guest will be a test that will be passed together with his fans around the world. Raven was born in 1974, but it would be until 1980 when they began to become known on the local scene in London until their acclaimed Rock Until You Drop of 1981 where this interesting story begins to be written that currently, in addition to Gallagher, shares credits with his brother Mark on Guitars, and Mike Heller on Drums. In this report we will talk about the expectations and the experience lived in the studio and the whole process that came to a happy end with this new release, his point of view on the pandemic that has affected the music industry, and the future that this great power trio has offers on this Journey from Metal City to the Top of the Mountain. Conexión Rock Radio: John, Johonny González of Conexión Rock Radio from Honduras, Central America greets you on this day! From here we send our good wishes to you, your family and your bandmates who are safe and well with this emergency, and it is an honor to speak with you and share with our readers about the next news that a great band like Raven have for your fans this year, welcome! John Gallagher: Hello, Johonny, good afternoon from London, a joy to talk to you again with this situation that the world is going through with this pandemic, but we are all well here at home, and we extend our good wishes to all our fans who follow us, in several continents and that they are pending of us. CR: Start the interview of this day in congratulating the band for their recent album called Metal City which will be released on September 18 through Steamhammer.
By the way, album number fourteen in its history. Everything indicates that 2020 will be an important year in the history of Raven. What are your expectations on this new page in your history? JG: What can I tell you, it's exciting to come back with an album again, although we were afraid to postpone the release for a few months later, but we decided it was the best time to do it for the fans, and we just hope it is to the taste of Once you all get your hands on it, we've definitely done a great job at Metal City, and we're proud of the end result. CR: Something that will catch the attention of many is the cover, whose idea was it to make this curious comic cover? JG: The idea came from Mike, since as we are a classic band he said: why not make the cover with classic elements and a bit of a modern touch in a cartoon way? We gave him the freedom to take care of the concept, and he had several ideas, and in the end we were left with what is currently the cover. CR: For many Metal City breaks a silence of five years since ExtermiNation and represents a work that defines the classic elements of the band with a modern sound without losing its essence.
What is the concept behind Metal City? JG: I can define it as a tribute to our city of origin: Newcastle, the same story can be applied to other cities, because the United Kingdom over the years has contributed to the world great and legendary bands, and each one offers their story. Looking for the title for this album was the best way to pay homage to the city that gave us birth. CR: For this new album we know that the band is in charge of the production process, but they also had the help of Mike Heller, Michael Wagner as engineers and Christopher "Zeuss" Harris in the mix, songs like The Power, Top of the Mountain, Human Race, Cybertron, Not So Easy, or When Worlds Collide, are examples that they made an impressive album. What experiences do you have working with them in the studio? JG: We worked with Wagener in the past, and we had him as a guest at All For One years ago, we decided at that time that he would be our producer for several of our next jobs, we have a very good work chemistry, since he You know the direction in which we are going to take once we enter the studio, when this whole project began to take shape, do not hesitate and call Michael to tell him that we would work with him again, so on behalf of the band we are satisfied with what he did. Mike (Heller) is our current drummer as you know, he was very helpful in the studio, and he brought a lot of ideas especially with his drum parts, and from Zeuss, it's our first work with him for this project. His work in mastering was excellent, and I would not hesitate in the future to be able to count on this team as a collective that has given great results. CR: This is the first studio work with Mike Heller, and that he played on the live album Screaming Murder Death from Above: Live in Aalborg, Mike's work is considered by many to be one of the notable points in Metal City for the speed and his drumming style.
What do you and Mark think of Mike playing with the band now? JG: We are proud that he is part of Raven today, he is a very talented musician, full of energy, and that he brings a different style to the sound of the band. Mike has admired us for several years, and when we offered him the position of drummer he accepted it with great commitment, and during these 2 years that he is with us many have received him with open arms and have had very favorable opinions of his live performance. CR: This is your fourth work with Steamhammer, we know that the first album with them was Architect of Fear released in ninety-one
How do you feel being part of one of the most important record companies in the world? JG: We have a fantastic working relationship with them, they have given us a lot of support in terms of logistics and promotion, it is very gratifying that SPV always bets on us, we seek not to disappoint, and the idea is to offer jobs that exceed quality and expectations , I can tell you that Raven has her home proudly speaking on SPV. CR: Forty-six years of career, 14 studio albums ... it's quite a story
Are you satisfied with all that has been achieved to date? Looking to experience new sounds in the Raven universe? JG: The truth is it is a long journey, with ups and downs, we would never think to go so far with what we have done, and to see how several generations have grown up and enjoyed our work is something very special that we have done on several tours around the world. We consider ourselves survivors, and this new album is proof of that. About experimenting with new things, I leave that to the time I define the ideas and the next step to take, with all the work and the excellent results, I think that when we start touring again, new ideas will appear. We are not copy and paste, or take ideas from things that we have done before, so for us each work that we release artistically speaking is a challenge that we face and overcome. CR: With this global emergency caused by COVID-19, many concerts and festivals were canceled, as well as delays in releases.
Being a musician and part of the band, are you aware that this emergency could affect you financially due to the possible drop in sales? JG: Looking at all this on the positive side, we are reassured that we have released the album at a time of global crisis, but we have many fans who support us, and for that reason we always thank them for being there buying a CD, a Vinyl, a T-shirt or buying everything from our digital platforms, as I mentioned before, it was a decision to think if this would be a good or bad idea or postpone the launch, but both the label and we were convinced that this would not disappoint, we will have enough patience to wait conditions improve, and play again for everyone in various countries. CR: Speaking of this problem John, what is your point of view that many bands are opting to do their virtual concerts? JG: As a musician it is a distasteful situation, I could not imagine doing those things without the presence of the public or doing concerts in very small spaces, with restrictions and few people. That kills the magic. Can you imagine us playing with a lot of energy, but only for ourselves and we have to think that in that empty space there is an audience, even though they follow us from a computer or a telephone, things are not the same. This could affect the industry from now on if things continue like this, or this will be a role model for others. We are of the opinion of the band and its audience to be together at a concert, and that this fucking Coronavirus issue ends. CR: As you are the lead singer and bassist of the band, what is the secret to keeping your voice in shape?
Many think that you are intact in time JG: There is no secret to hide (laughs), it is only having a healthy lifestyle without excesses, not drinking or smoking, and taking things that relax your throat, exercising your voice without straining yourself to limits that can be damaged, otherwise enjoy a concert and interact with everyone. CR: In recent years, many bands hold special celebrations to revisit classic albums live.
In this case, Architect of Fear turns 30 this year, also Walk Through Fire turns 10 Are you for or against this type of celebration, or do you have plans to make a special anniversary edition? JG: In 2019 we celebrated our 40th Anniversary in several countries, although with the issue of special editions all this would be to talk to the label, because both albums are released with SPV, so a remaster or something special could appear, but for now we will concentrate on touring and making up for lost time. CR: Speaking of tours, how has the band felt with the Latin American public in this recent celebration?
JG: It has been especially fun because I have had the opportunity to speak a little Spanish, the truth is not perfect (laughs) but I have tried to pronounce it well, for example "Una Cerveza Por Favor" (A Beer Please), or "No Tengo Dinero" (I have no money) (laughs) , the Latin American public is very dedicated, very crazy, with a lot of energy, and those are the ingredients that Raven looks for in a concert, of one thing is certain, we will tour here again, and if it is possible to play in other Central American countries: Salvador or Honduras, it´s a matter of waiting if there is any opportunity to get dates out there. CR: Once this emergency is over, do you have plans to tour Europe, the United States or Latin America in the coming months or in 2021, or are you waiting to reschedule pending dates? JG: Everything is stopped, we are concentrating more on the process of producing and releasing the album. For now we are in contact with our agents to see when we can tour again and schedule several dates in both Europe and America, so when the outlook is clear we will announce new presentations, have a little patience while all this pandemic passes and we all come back to normal. CR: John, what message do you want to send to those who read us in this special interview?
I want to thank you for taking the time to do this special report on Conexion Rock Radio. JG: Thanks again to you Johonny for your interest in the band, I wish all the fans of the band around the world that you are well in your homes with your families, take care, that this pandemic is real and we are waiting for it to appear a vaccine so that all this is of a lesser impact and to see you all on a tour again, for now enjoy the album that both digitally and physically are available in our store, and we hope it will be to the taste of all of you once listen to it.
