SODOM

SODOM
Four Decades Of War In Hell Thrash Metal made in Germany for the world… This is what we have for all of you in the following interview that Conexión Rock Radio has for all of you, and that the protagonists of this report are going through a great and important moment in their recording career. On this occasion we contacted a luxury guest such as Tom Angelripper, Founder, Bassist and Vocals of the band SODOM who in 2022 present us with their new release called 40 Years at War - The Greatest Hell of Sodom, which was released on October 28 through Steamhammer, and as its name indicates, it is a 4-decade celebration release where they revisit various classics from their career and also present us with some songs that have been rescued from the trunk for this occasion. With Tom we talked about this interesting journey that he has made through several albums and different line-ups that Sodom has had throughout his career, and that are currently complemented by Frank Blackfire and Yorck Segatz on Guitars, together with the charismatic Toni Merkel on drums. Our guest shares interesting details about this new album, with the intention of recording a live album, but as a consequence of the pandemic that hit the world in 2020, it is a project that is pending completion, with the intention of relaunching the entire catalog of the band in special editions, and the recent presentation they had in Mexico together with Tankard, Destruction and Kreator, thus marking the long-awaited reunion of the four greats of German metal, as well as the promising future that they seek to expand their sound to other corners of the world. world. Get out your snacks and drinks, and play this interesting album where they pay tribute to their career of four decades of war in hell. Conexión Rock Radio: Good afternoon from Honduras Tom, it's an honor to talk to you again after many years and thanks for the time back home where we will share with our readers and especially Sodom fans around the world the news that the band has in 2022, again an honor and thank you!! Tom Angelripper: Thanks to you Johonny, that's right, our last conversation, how many years was it? Five or six I think, (laughs) time flies fast, and once again it's a joy to talk to Honduras again, we hope that next year we can visit your country and enjoy what we have in our hands with the fans. CR: We hope so Tom, and how do you feel about returning to tours and festivals after this time of absence due to the pandemic?
TA: As a band we have experienced very difficult times in these two and a half years without activity of any kind, but now that things are returning to normal we hope to make a great agenda for 2023 and be able to make up for lost time, since as you know there are many people who live exclusively from music and that is their source of income, and others who have survived their jobs. Here we all lost money, but with a couple of shows we did recently we are anxious to prepare concerts next year, now that there are no more lockdowns or restrictions, playing on stage again has filled us all with joy. CR: That's right, at least now everything bad is going away and the world is going back to being the same before this problem of 2020, but let's talk about good things and in this case of Sodom, the band recently 40 Years at War - The Greatest Hell of Sodom via Steamhammer on October 28.
Do you meet expectations or do you expect reactions from people around the world with this new album Tom? TA: It was a difficult challenge there Johonny, regarding expectations I will tell you that people have liked these new versions of classics that we have revisited in our career, we had to select the best songs from our catalogue, and listen to the entire Sodom discography it was not an easy task. At first we intended to select two songs for each album, but in the end we only ended up selecting one due to time issues, and it was a fun debate to see what would be the chosen songs for this new release. During the recording process, Tony Merkel, our drummer, told me that it was not necessary to make changes to the structure of the songs, and that he wanted to respect the lines of the originals since he is an admirer of the work that Chris Witchhunter has done, so the best for everyone it was to maintain that energy, that magic that the songs have in their original versions. In addition to this strict selection of songs, there will be some that we have never played live or that never appeared on compilations years ago, and with this new album it will set the tone for us to make our setlists at the concerts that we will do soon. CR: Now that you mention that point Tom, I don't know if it was easy or difficult to make this selection from the extensive catalog that the band has throughout their career?
TA: Yes, the truth was (laughs) it was a very extensive and difficult task at the same time. There are good works in our discography, such as Masquerade in Blood (1995), I consider it a great album but over time it ended up being undervalued. And I have had the opportunity to rescue some songs in our recent concerts, one of those great forgotten songs is Gathering of Minds and we have kept the same tuning and time so that it sounds from the time, but in force at the time of playing it. Over the years we have released many albums that are good, as well as very good songs, for that reason we didn't want to make Agent Orange from the same album, it would sound boring, but I must tell you that this album represents an important event in our 40 years. of existence as a band, and it was a work that changed the life of Sodom in a definitive way, especially for the sound and the way it was recorded. Unfortunately the 90's arrived and many bands had to change their music due to external pressures in order to sell more records. The great secret of the band is to never change their music, and for that reason we are still alive after many years, because when the fan goes to a store to buy our records, they know what is on that record, and we are always grateful to everyone. those people who have supported us in all this time, the music is for them and not for the music industry. CR: After a great work like Génesis XIX we were all waiting for a new album, but the surprise is a selection of the best Sodom songs in four decades, was it your initiative or a request from the fans to make these re-recordings?
TA: Genesis XIX has been a really great album, regarding your question I will tell you that we had the intention of making a live album and revisiting all those songs in a better way with the current lineup that I consider to be the one with the most energy of all the incarnations that Sodom has had through the years, and since 2020 I have been looking for a special and suitable place where I can make a live recording. It could have been in any country in the world, in South America or in Honduras, people will always be there to enjoy an event like that, having our technical team looking to make that occasion a memorable event. We wanted to relive great concerts like the ones we experienced in 1995 to mention an example, we want to do our best for the fans like launching a book with photos of the tour and various surprises that will delight people. There is another great album that is my favorite in recent years which was Decision Day, in those days Bernemann and Makka did great things, a lot of people wanted them to come back, but the lineup is different, and Genesis XIX is a more direct album and that possibly mark a musical line for future works, and when the time comes to offer something new we will enter the studio to make the heaviest songs in our catalogue, that's for sure. CR: For this new release, Tom, there are songs that have been rescued from the trunk or that were left incomplete over the years, it reminds me a lot of what they did with the latest EPs like Partisan or Out of the Frontline Trench where songs appear that They don't commonly appear on albums. What details can you share with us?
TA: There is a song called 1982, it talks precisely about the beginnings of the band, a revolutionary song that went against everything in those years and that sought to break stereotypes, it was one of the first songs I wrote and it was a cry of rebellion against politicians, teachers and parents, and it was about a young man who formed a band to make noise, and you have to take into account that many bands and great albums came out in that year, so I consider it a very special period in that decade. Talking about 1982 is a very typical song in the line of Sodom and it has those basic elements of the guitarists of that time and everything was very different in the way you composed the songs, and Yorck has influence from that classical school, for that reason. there is a lot of the 80's spirit in those compositions, we also rescued from the trunk Victims of Death, Witching Metal, and Let's Fight In The Darkness Of Hell, and I'm sure that people will like these songs that we have rescued for this occasion, and for our next performances we will be including these songs in the setlists of the tours that we will be announcing later, and it will be fun to share this with people. CR: Taking advantage of this moment of celebration that the band is currently enjoying, do you have plans to reissue the entire Sodom discography?
There are many people around the world who, for various reasons, want to have all these discs in their different formats. Is this possible? TA: I think the truth is yes. We have talked about that topic so that fans around the world know that we are listening to them and they should realize that the entire discography was released through SPV which is our label that we have worked with throughout our career. About reissuing material we have made one last year with M-16 and the BMG label has taken care of the treatment to do justice to an album that has been requested by people in recent years and that came to light in normal edition and boxset with some surprises. The same example happens with Tapping the Vein, curiously the album turns 30 in 2022 we will work again with BMG so that it is available to the people since in recent years the vinyl of the time is sold at exaggeratedly high prices on sites like Ebay or Discogs, so in this case we are in talks to be able to reissue it and include many interesting things from the time. Another album that we are looking to rescue there is Obsessed by Cruelty, as you know the album was recorded twice and there are two versions, the first that was released for the United States and the second that was released in Germany. (Context: The original recording was rejected and accidentally used on the original US pressing, released by Metal Blade. While the European Steamhammer pressing is the second recording with the bonus track "After the Deluge") and we have contemplated making a boxset combining the two versions, fortunately we have the masters and we are preparing everything to make the project digital with a better sound treatment. We have many requests in our networks including an edition for Persecution Mania. So if everything goes well, possibly in 2023 we can reissue the entire catalog of the band with BMG. CR: Erian Kantor's cover is magnificent in bringing together two characters, the soldier from Persecution Mania and the executor from In the Sign of Evil, whose idea it was to make this great illustration.
TA: The idea was Erian's. We submitted the first illustrations to the label, but they didn't like it, we wanted the cover to look like a poster, so it was rejected, it wasn't satisfactory for them, the artist is from Australia and his name is Rock. I called Erian who has worked with me for the illustration of In War and Pieces and told him to make me the cover for the band's 40th anniversary, but that he had two weeks to send me the design (laughs), and there was no time to review or discuss the details or changes that could occur in that short time. A few days later I received a pdf of the illustration in the mail, and when I saw it I was delighted and told him that this would be the cover of the album. Something that I liked was seeing the performer who has appeared on our first albums and who accompanied us at the beginning of our career, and then seeing the soldier who would be with us to this day, unite two universes, the past and the present. of Sodom on that cover is one of the points that I liked about this new release. CR: Forty years of career, many tours around the world, bands that consider you an influence on their sound, albums that are cult classics, and musicians who have contributed many things in this long journey. How does it feel to witness the evolution that Sodom has had over the years? TA: The band in these four decades of existence has never changed, what has changed is the music business and bands would appear with a completely different proposal, and I consider that metal in the 80's was something very special, it was A revolution. Currently many bands appear on television shows, magazines, but everything has expanded in the entertainment industry and everything has gotten out of control, it's my opinion. Heavy Metal has undergone many changes. For that reason, bands like us could be called one of the last in line within heavy metal, because everything now is giant screens and stages, and there are even bands that don't really play live on TV, most of them use playback. Being in this business for 40 years is really difficult because there are record companies, publicists who through contracts seek to enrich themselves from the work that musicians do on their albums, it is something special for us as a band and fighting for our rights in all these years, and They have even asked me for advice on how young bands can be more professional in the world of music, and here many people quit school and their jobs, I would tell them not to quit, to find their own style, try to make a band that stands out from the rest. Here many metal bands that appear in magazines seem more like pop bands, all of that is a trend. I remember years ago that many of us wore denim and leather and had Motorhead patches on our jackets, and some friends listened to New Wave bands that came out in those years and had broadcast slots on Deutche Welle, even though they were different genres there were a lot of opening for Heavy Metal to have a greater diffusion and living that experience in those years was very special for me. Metal through the years has had good and bad moments, especially when it was sought to market it, but we never fell to that point, and I can assure you, Johonny, that the next album will be heavier material than the last one. CR: On this celebratory tour, do you plan to invite musicians who were part of the band's history or do you consider that the formation with Frank, Yorck and Toni is the perfect one for this very special moment?
TA: For me it's perfect to have two guitarists in the band, having Frank and Yorck in recent years have taken things to a new level, so much so that our engineer has told me that having two guitars playing on stage gives it more weight to the sound of the band, and hearing both guitars on the monitors makes everything more understandable now, considering that most of our career the band has been made up of three members. The current formation sounds great, and we all have a great harmony, and sometimes you want to change to generate a greater contribution both in lyrics and music with the rest of your bandmates, it's like talking about Toni, for example, which I consider as the best metal drummers Germany has produced in recent years, and he is always there contributing ideas, composing in the studio and on tour, and seeking to improve various aspects within the Sodom sound. I'm very proud of all of them, he reminded me back in the day when he had Witchhunter and Blackfire, it was a great lineup back then, and Frank is a great person and a great guitar player. To this day I do not regret the decisions to remove someone from the band because behind that exit there are many reasons. When Chris had problems with his alcoholism, he felt that his ability as a drummer had reduced and that made it impossible to work with him, and he struggled to keep the band going and could not allow addictions to cause problems in our future, and for me it is a relief that 40 years later we stick together, and now having Yorck, Toni we are a creative force that will be impossible to stop now. CR: And we hope to be able to reach 50 and celebrate this Tom (laughs), speaking of all this, I don't know if they have suggested you publish a book with the history of the band and that different protagonists appear giving testimony of the good or bad moments that Sodom lived in its history? Or maybe a DVD?
TA: I think about making a book with my own biography, you know, where people can see many curiosities of the album covers, alternate ideas, original artwork. I plan to include it in a future boxset. When that moment arrives, I will talk about the abuses that have been suffered on the scene, I will tell my truths about it, and for the day that I retire and leave music I will write that book, I am one of the people who are convinced that when you you retire from something you never come back, and that's what I will do when I retire from the music business and I will speak my truths about that industry and its people. CR: We know that Mexicans recently enjoyed a special reunion of the so-called German Big 4, I have a healthy envy that those who witnessed this event were part of something memorable.
Tom, maybe you have been asked this question in several interviews, but will it be possible to have a show like this in your countries, you know, coordinate schedules, managers and bands to reserve a special time on tour? TA: We've talked about taking this show to various parts of the world for years, I've talked to Schmier (Destruction) all this time, as well as Gerre (Tankard). Here the problem is with Mille, because he hasn't talked to us and he seems to live on another planet. When we were performing a few weeks ago at the Mexico Metal Fest we were having a few beers and having a good time with Schmier and Gerre and Mille was the big absentee there, and after their show the band went straight to the hotel, and the rest of us We felt uncomfortable because we wanted to do something special all together on stage, so we deduced that working with Kreator would be impossible in the future. The promoter in Mexico did a gigantic miracle in bringing Kreator, Sodom, Destruction and Tankard together in one place, and the Big 4 show was held on one stage, because they had access to contact their agents, agencies and managers. For that reason everything was possible in Mexico. The fans wanted to see the four bands together play a song after Kreator finished their show or play some cover that we like in common. The intention was for the Big 4 to all play as friends at a special time. Honestly, in my personal opinion, I see that as impossible, I think that here the bands that have the most willingness to play together are Sodom, Destruction and Tankard, but I highly doubt in the future that someone will risk investing to have the four bands together again, Due to all the factors that I explained to you, it would lead to an event with many difficulties. We do not charge exaggerated amounts to play together, instead Kreator has become a very big band, and we are proud that Mille and his band have worked very hard to get to the point where they are, we know that we are not all at the same level than Kreator, but the fans don't care about those comparisons, for them seeing the four bands together there is what matters most to them, and the Mexicans lived perhaps a unique event, we as musicians have no preferences with the fans to say Who has more followers. We know that people not only from Mexico, but also from Latin America and the rest of the world like Thrash Metal bands from Germany, and I consider that what I experienced in Mexico was a dream come true, so if something similar happens in the future, I'll take my bags and go back to the road to see many people happy with our music. If in Latin America they want to have the Teutonic Big 4, the promoter or promoters will have a difficult task there, adding to this the communication with the other bands, coordinating schedules and dates together with the agencies, record labels and representatives in those countries, it is a complex business, but on Sodom's side we will be there for the fans. CR: What's next for Sodom in this celebration? Do you have touring plans later this year or plans you are looking to finalize by 2023?
TA: Soon we will be playing at Metal Hammer Paradise, which is a festival in Germany, and at the end of December we will do a mini tour through several cities, five dates to be exact, now that the Coronavirus is gradually disappearing we have more opportunities to introduce ourselves in other places, we want to play in Central and South America, since in Germany there are big festivals but we want to go out of our country and see a lot of people in other places, already after the release of the 40th anniversary album we already have ideas for what can be a new record in the future. Everything is composed, and we will be looking for a studio where we can make the recording later. I am a person who avoids getting bored, so I go into the rehearsal room to polish new ideas, and I can tell you, Johnny, that the new Sodom album will possibly see the light of day in 2024, as we seek to make up for lost time caused by this pandemic and record this new material without haste or pressure. Everything is ready, it is only a matter of time before we return to the studio and offer something new to the world, if the opportunity arises in those countries it is very likely that we will record a live album for the next tour, it is something pending that we want to fulfill. CR: Hopefully we can tour our countries, either with Sodom or with the Big 4 Tom, at the end of this interview what message do you want to send to the people who have enjoyed this conversation, and thank you very much for the time you you have granted us to make this report possible from Honduras
TA: We want to thank the fans all over the world who have supported us during these 40 years, who come to our concerts, buy our merchandise and who always give us their time to enjoy the songs we play on stage. We always try to be humble, we are not rockstars and we know where we come from, and we try to ensure that everyone goes home happy, you know, share a few beers, some photos and that they can take their signed records with them. We are all one family, there is no difference between you and me, music unites us and we know that all over the world we have a strong fan base that is waiting to celebrate this legacy, and I can only say that thanks to all of you this band is still alive. after many years, and I can honestly say that Sodom is proud of you. We hope to see you on tour very soon, for now take care of yourselves at home and we hope that you like this new material and that we can share this and many more surprises on our upcoming tours of your countries. Special thanks to Björn von Oettingen of the Steamhammer Press and Promotion Team for his help in making this interview possible, and to Tom Angelripper for allocating time at home.
