STRYPER
STRYPER
Four Warriors Ready For The Final Battle One of the most representative bands of Heavy Metal and Hard Rock appears again in our international interviews, and with its presence we celebrate another anniversary as a means of communication where we share with its fans its history, current affairs, and its promising future within the world scene. This time we have a deluxe guest in our reports: Michael Sweet, Guitar, Voice and Founder of the band Stryper, who in 2022 will present us with his new album called The Final Battle, which will be released on October 21, and which for many they could consider this effort as the heaviest in their modern era. We talked about the production and composition process of this new project in their career, about the difficulties that the band has gone through during this period of confinement, the evolution that they have taken in recent years at a musical level and that now with the pandemic under control they will seek to go as far as possible with this new page in his history, seeking to make a communion with his fans and celebrate his legacy in this way. In addition to Michael on Guitar and Vocals, Stryper is complemented by Robert Sweet on Drums, Oz Foxx on Guitar and Vocals, and Perry Richardson on Bass. We invite you to make yourself comfortable, make a Stryper playlist, and find out interesting details ahead of your tour of several Latin American countries where all of you are witnesses of how four warriors under the command of God on high are literally preparing... for the final battle. Conexión Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Michael, it´s a great honor to have you again celebrating our 13th anniversary, and, by the way, this is our second conversation since 2016, and for me it is an honor to share with the fans of the band throughout Latin America and around the world of the important news that you have in this year, welcome! Michael Sweet: Hello Johonny, congratulations on the anniversary of Conexión Rock, and he sent a greeting to all the people who follow us in various Latin American countries, it has been a long time since the last conversation, and here I am ready to talk with you this time. CR: Thank you Michael, it has been more than two and a half years since the pandemic hit the world causing the music industry to go on a forced hiatus. Now that things are under control, how do you feel about playing again and meeting people again?
MS: We are very excited to play for people again, and we believe that this is a blessing, many might think that this situation could be reversed, but the reality is that we were isolated within our own homes for many months, despite everything being returning to normal many bands had to go through many difficulties, likewise the fans. Now we are back with an album, we have started a series of shows, and we have a lot of plans for 2023, and that is a sign that we are not going to stop and we are very excited about what we will present to people next, as I told you before we are blessed to take this new step. CR: We know you guys are looking to do your best now that you're back in action Michael, now let's talk about The Final Battle, this is the new Stryper album that will be released on October 21st via Frontiers Records, and seeing the hype that has been created in the last few weeks people think this is another instant classic in their discography.
Do you have any expectations with this new work? MS: I always try to approach each album without expectations. If I said that I have expectations for the release of a new album, you are usually disappointed by the fact that these expectations are never met. So the moment we go into recording we enjoy making music, we put our heart and soul 110% into what we compose, especially when we seek to excel musically on each of our albums. It is there where the fans will enjoy what we are offering, and that they can enjoy what we have in our hands, many people might think that this is our best album, there will be different opinions when they listen to it and react to the songs, but something is Sure Johnny, people will say that this is an album with a very strong sound, very electic, there are heavy and light songs giving an interesting balance, we even have a little pop side with Till Death Do Us Part. There are a lot of things that we took from our classic sound, and I think people will really like that once they hear the album on physical and digital. CR: It is very interesting to know that Michael, Stryper is always like a box of surprises that seeks to make people smile when they present new material. How has the pandemic influenced the writing of the new album? Did this situation affect you at home or did you patiently wait for the right moment to come back with something new for the fans? MS: Not really. This situation did not cause changes in the moment of composing and writing songs, since during this time I have been locked in my studio for weeks, and I have been writing a song a day, and at the end of the process in 12 days I was able to have 12 songs ready. For this new album the process was different, more complex, but more stressful due to my situation with one of my eyes, since my retina detached and I had to stop the recording process for two weeks, but in the end I had to postpone everything for the following year. Although my recovery was favorable, I was able to complete everything, but the doctors asked me to take everything very calmly, since when I sing that would generate pressure in my eye and that could cause a lot of stress, but I was able to overcome my limits and my recovery worked fine the best possible way, that way I was able to make up for lost time and thus complete the process of this album that will soon be released. CR: We are very happy to know that you are in very good condition with your eye and we send you our best wishes that you stay healthy for the tours that you will soon do.
Recently, the band has released several singles in recent weeks: Rise to the Call and See No Evil, Hear No Evil. Now they present their latest single called Transgressor. What reactions have you had from people when listening to these advances, especially with Transgressor?, for many could be the heaviest song on the album MS: I agree with you, Transgressor is the strongest song on the album and we thought if it was a correct strategy to release the single or not, in the end people gave a great approval once we presented it, and I still think that many They like heavy songs. I can tell you in advance that the next single that we will present is called Same Old Story, which is a very powerful song, and then we have other great songs that will be the favorites of many, the same effect could be caused by the track Ashes to Ashes. As you know our first single was See No Evil, Hear No Evil and precisely for those days it was there where the problem with my eye started, in the same way I have had some hearing problems due to exposing myself to high volume at concerts, although in the end we laughed in the office talking especially about that track because of everything that has happened to me, but Johonny is sure of one thing, when the album comes out on October 21st, really there we will know what the fans think about the release, we will be able to know their opinions , feedback and impressions on the sound we've taken now, many may think this is a return to our roots, while others will say it's the best thing we've done in years. So it will be great to see those reactions on that day. CR: Let me tell you that one of the strong points besides the production is the cover, by the way, amazing work that Stanislas W. Decker has done for this new album that by the way has been collaborating with the band since 2013 when you guys released Second Coming.
What are your impressions of the amazing work Stanislas has done for The Final Battle? MS: I have great admiration for the work you've done for the band in terms of covers, I've been fascinated by the evolution you've presented in the artwork for albums like God Damn Evil or Even the Devil Believes, now with The Final Battle you've managed to overcome the effect of capturing people's attention and that was what we were looking for from the beginning from the visual aspect, he has done an incredible work and I can define this as fantastic in the creative aspect. CR: Actually that was something that left us all impressed once they revealed the cover art that at first looked like an oil painting, but then they presented the cover in its official form. In the next few days the band will tour several countries in Central and Latin America, Costa Rica being one of the points of this trip, I remember that the first visit that you had was in the year 2000, what impressions do you have of playing again for the Latin American fans with a new album already in their hands?
MS: We are excited to present a new set of songs, this time it will be longer, and we seek to fit classic songs and new ones according to people's taste, the main idea in the set list is to take everything to a new level, and how As you mentioned, 22 years have passed since our visit to San José, we know that in these times there is a lot of rain, so what we will experience in that country will be something special, and on this tour we will be playing for the first time in Colombia, precisely in Bogotá. Despite being a long journey, we are looking forward to seeing people from various countries in Central and South America, on this trip and especially with a new album this will be an adventure that we are all going to enjoy. CR: Latin fans will definitely enjoy in perfect communion the legacy that you have, and speaking of that Michael, the band will soon complete forty years of career since the days they were known as Roxx and then mutate to Roxx Regime for what later it would be Stryper, in addition to the fact that you have had parallel projects over the years and that for many they consider that the band has made great albums that are already cult classics, let alone your voice that is in perfect shape despite the fact that you are fifty-five nine years old, how does it feel to witness all the important moments that Stryper has experienced throughout his career?
MS: You know, we all get older with the passage of time, it takes its toll on all of us in many ways, our bodies suffer with age and we couldn't do things before when we were young, and I've tried very hard to take care of myself, and for me that is a blessing to be able to continue playing and singing, and being frank with you Johonny we are not reviving things from 1988, everything has changed since then, even with my vocal range that is no longer the same, I have undergone changes with him time but I have been able to keep my vocal range strong and make these albums to this day. CR: Sorry to interrupt you in the middle of replying, but I have to tell you that when I listened to Transgressor especially with your high notes my jaw literally dropped to the ground, and I said this is the definition of having a very good voice, it was very impressive listen to you like that. MS: I must thank you for that comment, it's very kind of you. My singing is not as high as it used to be for example when you listen to songs like In God We Trust for example, my vocal range was high and I could handle that with no problem. Now my pitch is a little lower and that makes my intonation sound deeper, but I am able to vary to the high notes, and I am very grateful for that, I am honored to be able to sing that way, but I take it for granted that the day may come when I can't do that again, but I'm thankful to God for everything I've been able to do so far, and I hope to continue making more music in the future. CR: We hope so Michael, you are a band that has the affection of many people around the world. Previously, when organizing our round of questions, several fans have written to us through our social networks if it will be possible to record an acoustic album, or a tribute with many bands around the world.
Have you had this type of request in recent years? MS: Precisely very soon we will be releasing an acoustic album, right now we are about to finish the work on the album art, and we only hope to announce the official release date. I think, from my point of view, that a project with these characteristics would work very well in that format and we hope to be able to present this in several countries. Years ago we had an experience in Puerto Rico and it worked very well, from then on the idea began to take shape. I like to sing, play and hit every note and compose, it's something I've always enjoyed in my life. Can all this be perfect? Yes. But not to sing. That point can be a challenge for any singer to be able to get out of their comfort zone and try things that you may not be able to fit in and that you have that feeling that because you experience other things you do not feel capable of singing. For my part, I feel very grateful to be able to face these challenges and overcome them personally. About a tribute I think it's great, you know? I love hearing a great Stryper tribute album done really well by various bands and that would be the greatest honor, and we know there are a lot of musicians who would give their best to capitalize on a lot of songs that we've done in our career, and that's really cool. It reminds me of a similar situation we did in 2011 with The Covering, since it was an album where we covered bands that influenced us musically, and that was very special to us. And if a proposal is presented to make a tribute of several bands from around the world or from a particular region, it would be a great honor to be able to accept proposals, and as a band we would be grateful if other musicians make their versions very close to ours or that they can improve in other aspects. I would love to see that project come to fruition, and it will be an incredible experience for the band and for those who are going to perform those versions. CR: We will be very expectant that these projects, both the acoustic album and the tribute, become a reality, and especially the latter where we want to hear the proposals that interpret their classics.
Among other things Michael, recently passed away Ted Kirkpatrick, Drummer and the mastermind of the band Tourniquet, we know that you have collaborated with him for the song Onward to Freedom in 2014. What memories do you have of that time when Ted invited you to participate? MS: With Ted we had a great friendship as musicians and as people. We did some projects at the end of the 90's, we were able to meet in England and he suggested that I participate in some projects later on, like when we recorded Onward to Freedom. When I found out that Ted had passed away I couldn't believe it, since that news was unexpected and shocking at the same time and I had no idea at the time what had happened to him. Ted was always a healthy person and nobody expected that turn with his sudden death, and that has left me with a deep reflection: nobody can know if tomorrow you will be alive, so the important thing is to be kind and live to be able to encourage other people , being able to be of help and lift them out of their mood, be a kind person and when the time comes to leave this earth, be remembered for being someone with good principles and who could have been useful to others in life. Ted made that difference and touched the lives of many people, he was amazing, and I am honored to have been his friend here on earth, and I hope to see him again in heaven. For my part, I will try to give my best effort to be a good person in the days that remain in my life on earth. CR: With the loss of a charismatic musician like Kirkpatrick, the band closes its legacy, which will be remembered by many, returning with Stryper, in 2023 the band will be forty years old, there are countries that for economic or promoter reasons, you have not been able to visit in recent years, for example Honduras, El Salvador or Guatemala, do you think it is possible that the band can visit these countries later?
MS: Absolutely, we have always had requests from fans from several Latin American countries so that we can play in their cities, although with this new album the idea is to be able to visit places where we have never played, an example of this is Ecuador, and also Panama. If the opportunity arises to be able to visit these places in Central America, it will be an honor, and we hope to be able to play there soon. CR: We hope that people from other countries neighboring Honduras have the opportunity in the future to have them on new tours, and we will be there for that moment.
Michael, many consider that the band in recent years has focused more on social issues, leaving aside spiritual issues, especially with the latest albums, on the one hand, there are opinions that the ideology that the band has taken is good, and for others to see this as a deviation in the way of thinking especially in the lyrical context, what do you think about it? MS: I think the important thing here is to be yourself and take a stand for what you believe in, and if people don't like that, that's their problem. I have always been the type of person who defends what one expresses in a publication about what one believes and is passionate about, if I see something that I do not agree with I tell people that I do not agree, if I see something I agree with what I say I agree with. With that, one thinks that sometimes that kind of thing can annoy people, but you know what at least at the end of the day they know what Michael Sweet thinks and expresses, and they know what to believe and what not. And that is where a powerful and interesting balance of things is created, in addition to being yourself in this world in knowing the role you have in this life. It is at this point where you know that people may or may not handle certain situations that they may later face or flee from. About the fan I understand very well the way he thinks and I don't see it as something bad. We defend Christ, and I have always taken that position, sometimes people think that we defend him in silence and for that reason they can say that we are not frank about it. If that were the case we would never talk about Christ and we would live in the style of sex, drugs and rock and roll, and I see that as a boring cliché. We sing about Jesus, and that has been our line of thought, for that reason we have received a lot of affection during all these years, but who cares, that is something beautiful, and at the end of the day we are very happy with what we do and that's why we reflect our true image as people and as musicians. That is what we believe and when we are on tour, at the end of each concert we can rest at night knowing that we have done our best to share a message with people, and we are very proud of that. CR: At the end of this interview Michael, what message do you want to send to those who have read this conversation, and who will be very aware of the release of the new album, tours and future projects you have with Stryper?
MS: I want to thank you, Johonny, and wish long life to Conexión Rock on its anniversary, thank you to our fans around the world for supporting us, I know that with this new album you will be pleasantly surprised, and we invite you to keep an eye on our networks for the tours that we will do in the remainder of 2022 and the new ones that we will be announcing for 2023, many blessings and a hug for all of you!
