WHITECHAPEL

WHITECHAPEL
A Silent Symphony of Blood For Deathcore fans with a firm and powerful proposal, one of its strongest exponents is back, and with a new release in its history that is undoubtedly enshrined as another of the releases that will be received with open arms for the latter. quarter of 2021, and in this special report you will know details about its current status and of course, future plans that they seek to carry out once everything returns to normal. Conexion Rock Radio reaches Tennessee, United States, and we talk at the home of Ben Savage, Guitarist and one of the founders of the band Whitechapel, who are experiencing an important moment in their career with the release of their new album called KIN, which came to light on October 29, 2021 through Metal Blade Records, and that at the discretion of our guest we may have a long-term conceptual project that began in 2019 with his acclaimed The Valley. Whitechapel is currently made up of Alex Rüdinger- Drums, Gabe Crisp- Bass, Alex Wade, Zach Householder and Ben Savage- Guitars, and Phil Bozeman- Vocals. Savage shares with all of you about the production process for this new album, the recent changes to their lineup, his view of the global closure in recent months, the concept behind KIN, and the bright future these talented musicians forge from. his story in A Silent Symphony of Blood. Get out your snacks or your favorite drink and enjoy this interview now. Conexion Rock Radio: Greetings from Honduras Ben, I send you my good wishes that everything is well there at home, and it is an honor to speak with you on this day to share with Whitechapel fans the news that the band has this year, Welcome! Ben Savage: Thank you Johonny for your interest, and of course also an honor to be able to talk with the fans in Latin America about the great moment that the band is already living with a new album in the streets. CR: As we all know the pandemic has generated a sudden change in almost 2 years without tours or concerts around the world, we want to know if the band has restarted tours or are they waiting to reschedule dates? BS: I tell you that we will go on tour in February 2022 and we will be together with Cannibal Corpse. This will be our first tour in 2 years, so we are excited to see everyone again at a concert, and for us it will be like getting rid of the rust (laughs) CR: It is good to know that soon you will be back in action with the concerts, and now let's talk about good news, Whitechapel released on October 29 their new album called KIN via Metal Blade Records, and this is another candidate for the best of 2021, ¿ what are your expectations with this eighth album in discography?
BS: Thank you very much for the comment, in terms of expectations, I just want people to enjoy it, you know, I want people not to see it as a heavy or fast album I want to see it as a kind of musical, because it counts. a story from beginning to end, and it is the continuation of our previous work that was The Valley, and we want to put all this together to bring this story to life with elements of drama, and we are seeing in this new project take it as far as possible, and make all this like a piggyback ride, and with KIN we seek that, that people all over the world enjoy it and can take an interpretation of what we are doing. CR: We know that The Valley is a concept album based on some experiences Phil had in his childhood. Many want to know the main plot of this new album: What is Kin, or Who is KIN?
BS: I would define it as a mere continuation of The Valley, as you said the album was based on some events from Phil's childhood, if you look at the end of the Doom Woods track it says “The devil is alive, he will find you ", and for Kin the first track the title is I Will Find You and it says" The devil is dead ", so the best thing was to join those stories between an end and a beginning. All these events happened by adding a supernatural element, something that is happening inside a full head, so KIN is basically like an evil self that manifested inside Phil's head, and that was caused by the trauma in The Valley, for what he encountered this evil me and tries to lure Phil back to the valley in a totally dark context. And that is where a fight develops between the person and his evil counterpart who seek to gain that space within his mind, all that was based so that KIN was a mixture of reality and science fiction, but it has very different things to what was done with The Valley, we did a handful of songs that reflected interlocking short stories from beginning to end, so we looked at the album in a way that is worthy of a musical. CR: Seeing the success of this project, many would think if The Valley and KIN were part of a trilogy? BS: That's right. In fact this is the second part of the story, we do not know for sure if we could do a trilogy, that would be a matter of time, but we will see that once we start preparing the next album, we will know how it will develop the moment we rehearse and shape new songs. CR: You know that people always mention the phrase "this is your best work". What reactions have fans had to the singles you have released in the last few months?
BS: The truth is that from the fans, everything has been favorable since we started to show signs of the new album, everything was previously planned and we released A Bloodsoaked Symphony as a first advance because it has a very energetic sound from our previous works, it provides a very technical, energetic, but it has parts of our newer sound that carry merely melodic aspects in structure. And we wanted that fusion of classic sound with completely fresh air, so we thought this is the perfect single to release heading into the album's release date, while Lost Boy is one of the strong singles for KIN, and if you're a fan of death metal or if you are versatile in the musical point, you can manage to listen to this without problems. Then Orphan would come and the third single, and we did this in order to please the public. I consider this track as the opposite point of A Bloodsoaked Symphony, and I could define this as the other side of the coin that we want to reveal, so there will be many people who will look out of curiosity to hear the album from start to finish. CR: I Will Find You, Lost Boy, History Is Silent, To the Wolves, Orphan and Kin are great moments on this journey, how do you feel working with Mark Lewis again producing this new album? BS: As a band, we find it very comfortable to work with Mark. We think it's very important to keep that chemistry between the band and the producer in the studio, especially when it comes to composing or writing music. Mark has worked with us on both, and in the end we were able to make ourselves sound really good in the studio. He brings many ideas that he has in mind and makes the whole process go smoothly. He has been the producer for our last five releases and we are satisfied with the way Mark has worked with us, and we can expect interesting results from him, as he knows the way we sound very well, especially in our music. instruments, he improves all the parameters so that everything sounds good, and as a producer he has his senses and ears in tune when we look for something new on our records.
CR: How do you guys feel as a band about releasing a great album in these strange circumstances? BS: The truth is that the impact was minimal and being locked up at home made us not pay attention to the confinement caused by the pandemic. At first it was difficult for everyone, but as time went by, all of that turned into a positive attempt for everyone, as we have been keeping busy and had a goal in mind that we had to fulfill, so that we could set our intention and focusing solely on the album, so on this side it helped us to make the confinement in our homes completely less stressful. CR: For this new release Alex Rüdinger is the new drummer of the band, we know that he has been collaborating with you since 2019. What impressions does the band have on Alex's contribution? By the way, the battery is a highlight in the production
BS: Having Alex and bringing his talent has been a positive point for the band, he is a professional musician on his instrument, he hits very hard and perfectly executes his parts as well as being creative. From the moment he walked into the studio to record his parts he did it in a very practical way, and everyone in the band is excited that he is with us. CR: Even though the band has 8 albums released, this is their 7th with Metal Blade, their debut was with This Is Exile, and 7 is a good luck number! How do you feel about being part of a great label like this?
BS: We as a band are trying to honor the legacy you know about the history of Metal Blade by doing excellent quality work for all audiences, as musicians we have great respect for the label, especially for Brian Slagel and other staff who are very professional in their things. They always maintain communication with everyone, and they are very sincere when working and supporting the bands in their releases, they also give us enough creative freedom to be ourselves, and they always support us in the production aspect, including the videos, and They do all of this for creative purposes. They always appreciate music more and how art is taking shape. With this they do not think about making quick money, they seek to do something in the long term, and as artists we see in this a merely beneficial deal between artists and record company. CR: Since the pandemic began at the beginning of 2020, it has generated changes that affected both the public, tours, concert halls and festivals, despite the fact that many bands in these conditions released albums and were able to use the streaming modality to interact with people. From your point of view, do you see that these changes for the artists were or were not favorable despite the fact that people are afraid of going to a concert for fear of contagion or that new variants may appear? BS: Very interesting question the truth, that's a great thing, yes, you just wait for someone to feel sick or have a headache or have a cough, many might think that they don't show up to a concert, they just don't have to be selfish in that regard since it is very difficult for someone to ask about their health or doubt each other. Now that restrictions are gradually being lifted, with the exception of some cities they have a very strict vision of things, with what has happened there are changes, there are no backstage tickets, there are no guests, and that gives you the feeling that You live inside a bubble, if you ask me, my opinion is that this will be the case for a short time, after everyone is vaccinated and things are more controlled we will see how things go later. CR: What impressions have tha band in using the mode of streaming shows, as you know, bands and people live off an exchange of energy, and acting in front of a camera makes all that magic go away, what do you think? from this?
BS: I think I'm not in favor of using that kind of thing. I respect the other bands that use this option to be able to get closer to the public, but we have thought about seeing if that is feasible or not for the band. Perhaps not advancing to that point influences trying to reach a reach for more people, having a feeling of justice for what you do or we simply cannot find the right people to advise us and make that possible. But I am of the criterion of "never say never to something" CR: Seeing the success you will have with KIN, do you have plans to record a live album?
For example, the self-titled album will hit its first 10 years in 2022. Are there plans to revisit this album live, or will you release a special edition with bonus material? BS: That's a good idea, it could work to celebrate the album with something special for the fans, for example, we made some special sections for The Somatic Defilement, This Is Exile and A New Era of Corruption, possibly if we take into consideration for it. Self-titled album we could include many things, including demos and ideas of the time. About something live… might later consider bringing The Valley and Kin together for a special project. It will be a matter of time to see if the conditions and the moment are suitable for everyone. CR: At the end of this conversation with you Ben, what message do you want to send to those who have read this interview, and I want to thank you for the time you have given me there at home
BS: Thanks to you Johonny for your interest in talking about what the band is currently doing, this is really great to do this interview with you because my dad was born in Mexico City and lived in Caracas for 10 years, and he didn't speak Spanish exclusively until he was ten years old and then he moved to Maryland, but all that, so I thank all the people who live in Latin America for their support towards the band and that they enjoy our music that we do all this only for you! Take care, and we hope to see you on tour soon. Special thanks to Sarah Lutz and Natasha Gorey for their help in making this interview possible, and Ben Savage for their time from home.
